Wish this sort of thing would happen in American politics.
omgscienceFeb 6, 2012
It would if American voters were not idiots. The elected officials in the US are good representatives of the voting public, fat greedy narcissistic pigs.
aanrFeb 6, 2012
You forgot lazy.
norman619Feb 6, 2012
More like Apathetic. We've had it good for too long. It doesn't help with congress plies us with "free" things.
mike2laneFeb 6, 2012
Yet, we elect that Congress.
norman619Feb 6, 2012
And we ignore when they do things we know aren't right. We never once asked them how they were paying for these massive programs. We didn't care. As long as the gravy train was running we chose to remain ignorant and keep re-electing these people. Many of them have been in office for decades. If I remember right the current majority leader has been in congress for around 25 years. Something is VERY wrong with that. We have precisely the government representation we deserve.
asfinktersezwutFeb 6, 2012
The amazing thing is, there is nothing unique about that. I hear exactly the same thing in Canada and in Europe. For all you want to believe things are different, it's really not, people are sheep all over.
mitsanagaFeb 7, 2012
i know this may sound extremely harsh, especially to the older citizens around the world. but after seeing all ive seen happen and honestly though, after watching the world go to s**t due to your s**tty voting decisions. i feel its time to put up an age limit to voting. not for how old u have to be to start voting, but when you dont get to anymore. please people if we dont let them drive after 75 or sometimes younger. why THE f**k would we let them vote. i live in canada and i saw what happens when you let old people vote year after year. we got Stephen Harper 3 f**king times. that i do remember. hopefully not a fourth coming up and if he already got that fourth.... good. means he doesn't get another go around.
like i said i know it sounds harsh. but honestly most people that get to that age start to get senile and begin to develop many different disablilities that have to do with the mind. but yet we let these people vote for who will make decisions that could make or break our countries. im pretty sure that if you were to take the senior citizen population out of the votes that the polls would start to look more in favour for the people who actually want to do something for their country instead of getting the same old fat greedy asshats that we have been dealing with for the past while.
of course you might say that they couldnt have known that these people they elected would be this way. but i did know that harper was no good. i could see that he was full of it. and that he is just America's puppet. of course the seniors on the otherhand ate him up here in canada cause he was going to do many things to make seniors lives better. which he actually didnt for the most part. big shock i know. either way, thats the main ball game here in canada. thats how you win an election. appeal to the masses. and sadly the masses are old and creaky. even sadder is that the politians know this and will use this to their advantage everytime. its not their fault that many old people are gullible. time to either disallow them the legal privilege to vote or hope they all start dieing off soon, cause till then, we are just going to keep getting the same old assh**es just in a different suit. ohh.. and before people start to argue whether voting is a right or not. in canada it is a privilege to be able to vote. you can have your privilege revoked. its not a right and never should be in the first place otherwise every idiot gets to vote like they do down in the states.
mitsanagaFeb 7, 2012
also before i finish. Harper is also a perfect example of why you dont let Religion and Politics mix and mingle. our Parliment is now made up of more Religiously devout believers than there is just politicians. my personal belief is that religion never have anything to do with politics EVER!!! The american Evangelists would eat harper up in a second and make him their new idol/president if canadians could be president.
asfinktersezwutFeb 7, 2012
Republican Americans could only dream of getting a real conservative like Canada's Prime Minister (Stephen Harper) as their candidate.
extremephobiaFeb 7, 2012
The truth is that people aren't lazy. How much free time did you have today? I have two jobs and if one of them wasn't a work from home job, I'd never have time for the news.
But what it comes down to is not who we elect but who we reelect. Electing someone new is always a gamble but if a politician does something stupid and we reelect them, we are telling them that they are doing exactly as we want.
We need to just vote out this entire generation of politicians. We need to tell politicians there is no more "politician for life" and that their job is conditional on actually doing a good job.
mattbrad2Feb 6, 2012
It certainly doesn't help that the people we elect in office have their *icks tied to corporate sponsors and end up being completely different that the person we thought we were electing.

Actually there are a lot of presidents that have been richer than what Mitt is.

By the way, everyone who has been president or been a serious contender for president in the last 10 years have been multi millionaires.
A few examples:
Barack Obama
Romney
Gingrich
Ron Paul
Santorum
Howard Dean
John Kerry (richest of the bunch by far).
So you're mad that one millionaire might be president over another millionaire?

angelofchaos99Feb 7, 2012
Then the US is a plutocracy.
seanstuartFeb 7, 2012
It does. It just happens after focus-group testing determines the perception the public would have to snow-shoveling, a scheduled event inviting reporters to the White House lawn to "accidentally" walk in on the President shoveling snow, and then for the footage to be played on the Sunday political talking head shows for them to discuss how the President is such a "regular guy" and wondering if this will help or hurt him in the general election.
nullcodesFeb 6, 2012

Its Finland, doesn't EVERYBODY have to do that EVERY day? Heck, it almost make sense that everybody that lives there has to walk around with one of those all day long.
At least thats my impression as a stupid Texan ;)

Awww look, he's taking his first shovelful of lobbyist money to the Bank of Finland for deposit!
hibby76Feb 6, 2012
5M people and it snows a lot. He's a lot more like a US governor of a mid-western state based on the number of constitutes and size of country he governs.
breadfredFeb 6, 2012
Still, he does his own shoveling. Do you know of a SINGLE representative who would do that? Do not belittle a country just because they are small, by the way - maybe you should go travel and look around Europe for a while.
Ouzel7Feb 6, 2012
Actually, yes. Not in DC, of course, but many members of Congress, when they return to their home districts, are QUITE human and even find joy in tasks like this.
bobcat7407Feb 6, 2012
I would bet there are plenty of representatives in STATE governments that do that. I don't think that pointing out that Finland is small belittles them, it's just a fact.
hibby76Feb 6, 2012
I've been to around 35 countries on four continents.......including many of them in Europe. I've lived in 3 countries on 3 different continents.
Just because an area has their own turf and flag doesn't mean that they're the same. Case in point Nauru or San Marino.
A few things are worth pointing out. He was elected THE DAY BEFORE. He isn't the president and he hasn't been sworn into office. You're assuming he'll be shoveling his own snow next year at this time. I seriously doubt it......
Finland has about the same population as Colorado. It's larger than Colorado by about 20%. Colorado has a larger economy by about 40%. It also snows a lot.
So, if some guy had been elected to be the governor of Colorado yesterday, I wouldn't be shocked at all if he were shoveling his own driveway the next morning.
humppatarzanFeb 7, 2012
"Nauru" means "Laughter" in Finnish, by the way.
designedsilenceFeb 6, 2012
So just because he is shoveling snow he is all of the sudden some kind of saint? While this is humbling it has no bearing on his presidential effectiveness.
laurahoustonFeb 6, 2012
You have go there to really see the differences in their society from average america. They aren't a material and services based type of society.
designedsilenceFeb 6, 2012
I am not disagreeing with that I am simply questioning the preconceived notions that are being placed on someone because of a picture.
countess666Feb 6, 2012
its not about him specificity.
its a comment on how down to earth they are there, even after becoming president.
even a congressmen wouldn't spend the day after a election shovelling snow (most wouldn't ever, even if they lived somewhere it snowed), let alone the president.
mike2laneFeb 6, 2012
I am sure this had nothing to do with a photo op. /s
breadfredFeb 6, 2012
That comment says a lot more about American politics than the Finnish politics. The Finnish would see this as normal and definitely not newsworthy.
mike2laneFeb 6, 2012
Then why did someone over there take the picture?
humppatarzanFeb 7, 2012
Because we can. Unlike in some unnamed police states, where the cameras are taken away and the ones taking the pictures are treated as terrorists.
ghostrunner1Feb 6, 2012
No-One is saying he is a saint, simply that the president of the country is shoveling his driveway, without a security detail no less. It's a fun juxtaposition to American presidents who don't even make their own sandwiches, let alone shovel their walk.
hibby76Feb 6, 2012
Nope.......he's the President elect...not the president.
ghostrunner1Feb 6, 2012
I stand corrected. Now he's just like all the president-elects of the USA that all shovel their own walks after winning the election.
hibby76Feb 6, 2012
More like Governor-elects of small to mid-sized states........who probably do.
ghostrunner1Feb 7, 2012
Cite your source and show me a picture of Colorado's seat at the UN.
The point remains, the elected leader of the NATION was shoveling his walk. The US cannot say the same.
It's an enjoyable juxtaposition, nothing more.
hibby76Feb 7, 2012
Source: Wikipedia statistics.
Based on Population (both just over 5M), Land mass (Finland about 20% bigger), and GDP (Colorado about 40% larger).
.........did I ever say that Colorado was a country? By the way, show me Vatican City's seat at the UN.

It dossent really matter, that the picture were taken long before, he became president. The reson its funny, is because we know, large part of the US population, are arrogant ignorant snobs, like the woman in the italian airport, who couldent understand, that SHE had to wait like evryone else, for security to investigate possibel terrorism, "But im an american" she said.
When we watch your tv, you talk about the "best in the world" "the fastest in the world" really only referring to the US not botehring about what other contries have, and its so eazy to fix, just say the best in the US. Some americans think you have the largest army, that you are ahead in all kinds of tecknollogy, that you are the richest contry in the world and much more, and your films and other programs, where you remove all the fat, poor or ugly people, and trash in the streets, and add tecknollogy that dont exist, or that your government cant afford anyway, they dont help! we know your the fattest people in the world, close to the most criminals and gun shot killings in the west, we know your so called democracy have bin baught by your rich 1% a long time ago, and that China owns the rest of you. We still like you, just stop whit the being fake, and the holding on to "the center of the world", gods own empire ideas, they are dead long ago. And as long as you hold on to your megalomania, and Nazi like "we are a better kind of human" ideas, we scandinavians will make fun of you. while we pat our polarbears, that walk arround the streets whit all the naked blond sweedish ladies in Denmark, the capitol of sweeden. Agin, we like you, just get real and maby even down to earth a bit.
PresidentCamachoFeb 7, 2012
I can't understand why some folks here are so impressed by this, it is not uncommon to see white people doing yard work in Finland. Or is it that you want a president that does yard work instead of runs the country? So if a presidential candidate poses with a lawn mower you will probably think they are awesome and vote for him or her based on that awesomeness. Nice. No wonder why this country elects nothing but jackass after jackass (of course that is all there is to choose from, so that doesn't actually help).
markglFeb 6, 2012

Finland is a country with no enemies, no major resources, and no ethnic diversity. Being the President of Finland is like being the Mayor of Billings...
cranelakeFeb 6, 2012
I suggest you get a passport before spouting off about things of which you clearly no nothing.
Or at least read a book or two.
aremihcoFeb 6, 2012
I "no" enough to be sick of people comparing America's problems to isolated countries in Europe. We have a population that is roughly as large as and as ethnically diverse as ALL of Europe, yet people assume that we can use solutions that work in France or Britain or Finland. Finland is 94% Finish, has an economy 1/60th the size of ours, and a populations the size of Wisconsin... I amend my previous statement: being the President of Finland is like being the Governor of Wisconsin.
hibby76Feb 6, 2012
See my comment below. Finland is like Colorado in size and population (but with only about 60% of Colorado's GDP).
humppatarzanFeb 7, 2012
Yes, we are all retards up here. We're so isolated that even the only Internet connection we have had to be borrowed from Russia and it's due to be returned tomorrow. And, even if that wasn't enough, we clearly can't even do simple math. We poked the only computer in Finland with a stick and got the result of 72,8144976925 % of the Colorado's GDP, but obviously that can't be true, as you know so much better. Please, don't nuke us, US. Please, let your almighty wrath be directed at Sweden instead. It's a very easy mistake to make, after all. You can always blame some random subcontractor for supplying faulty guidance systems... Oh, now you're gonna be mad, and we're all doomed, DOOMED!
pfrchFeb 7, 2012
Wow! if you return it tommorow, maby we danes can have it for a few dayes!. I wonder, if your so isolated, how did you end up in a armed conflict whit Russia, and how did they get tanks to your contry? By ship?

Seriously, i can name 5 of my college professors that would do as good a job if not better than just about any candidate. Thing is, why would they run for a position where over half the public ends up hating you by the end of your term no matter what you do? (generally) The pay isn't fantastic (considering what they could make on insider trading), your social life is ruined and love life is strained to its limits all while the entire world criticizes you along the way.

While I think it's cool that he doesn't think of himself as to important to do a little real work, it does make me wonder if this is the best use of his time?
Maybe he just really enjoys shoveling, and this is how he gets his exercise, in which case more power to him. If not, then it is either a staged photo op, or he doesn't know how to delegate authority.
I wouldn't want President Obama to spend his time vacuuming the White House, he should have better stuff to spend his time doing. Though, if it kept him too busy to sign NDAA into law, I guess that would be a good thing.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

One observation, if he is a regular guy why is someone taking a well composed picture of him shoveling snow? I used to live in upstate New York .. it would snow like crazy .. nobody ever took a photo of me shoveling snow. .. "Sir, can you please move over to the side out of the way .. I'm trying to take a photo here".
humppatarzanFeb 7, 2012
He's not really a regular guy. That's why I voted for the other candidate on the second round. Then again, they're all just reptilian humanoids to begin with, so it doesn't really matter that much. But, it was his own driveway and we got hell of a lot of snow during the last few days, so as long as we're a free country (as opposed to certain police states), anyone can pretty much take a picture of any public figure without being treated as a terrorist. Besides, it shouldn't be a crime to know how to take good pictures, it's not that hard...

But as the US often receives this kind of "he's a regular guy!" admiration, for everything from Reagan the lifeguard (who rode a mean English style horseback) to Ambassador Locke buying his own coffee, not much perspective is required.

I'm not sure how nice that shovel would be. Scooping would be easy, but dumping it ahhh idk.
yurmutha412Feb 7, 2012
I have one just like it. I never pick it up, I just turn it over. They're never as easy as they look, but it's not bad.

There's a picture of Mitt and Newt doing this, somewhere...
... in a parallel universe, perhaps.

so you posted this three times already. Working at the PR bureau that staged the pictures?
hibby76Feb 6, 2012
Nope.........but here at digg the liberals bury everything that they disagree with. It was an honest reply to each question.
nullcodesFeb 7, 2012
He's retarded those pics were taken on November 14, 2007 .. right as the primaries campaign was starting!
Where was Romney during Katrina?
californicatorFeb 6, 2012
I should have clarified "this" as shoveling your own snow off your own walkway, for something other than a photo-op.
It is quite obvious Mittens is "stumping" in these photos... pun intended.
Thanks for the addition to my collection of Romney-pics. I'll put these right next to this one:

Still looking for the Newt photo. The Geico gecko playing shuffleboard on a cruise ship won't suffice... sorry.
hibby76Feb 6, 2012
There wasn't any press there. Mitt had suspended his presidential campaign. There was devastation left from the California wildfires and Mitt and his son showed up to help.
I think it's interesting that you're so massively jaded that you can't even recognize that on one day back in 2008 he did something to help someone out.
nullcodesFeb 7, 2012
The fact that it happened during the primary campaign is clearly a coincidence, I mean Katrina happened in 05 and he ... wait, what did he do during Katrina?
nullcodesFeb 7, 2012
Dude, quit spreading that lie over and over like it's peanut butter sauce.
The photos you have been referring to were taken in late 2007 .. you know .. during primary season.
californicatorFeb 7, 2012
At what point in the last 20 years did Mitt suspend his campaign?
Pu-lease. Are you telling me a billionaire with a stick is going to make any headway on that big-ass stump?
You know what his son is saying? "Hey Pop... Stop f**kin' around with that stick and let's hire a stump grinder!"
And, damn... could he have picked a whiter-looking neighborhood to help out in? I know he isn't concerned about the very poor and all...
Hehehehe - not a photo-op MY ASS!
hibby76Feb 7, 2012
If it were a photo op you'd have seen it on CNN or Fox. BTW, he's not even close to being a billionaire. So now your critical about how he's helping others? Interesting........
hibby76Feb 6, 2012
Well, it looks like Mitt Romney is going to be picking up a LOT more fans from Digg!
Here's Mitt helping out in 2008 after the California wildfires with one of his sons. Pictures didn't hit the mainstream media and no press was called. These were on Flickr taken by a guy who happened to be there.

That's called a photo-op. Not quite the same.
hibby76Feb 6, 2012
#1. How do you know the picture of the Finish President elect wasn't a "photo op"?
#2. If it's a Photo op, he sure looks terrible
#3. If it's a Photo op, why is it on someone's Flickr page and not CNN, FOX, MSNBC, etc?
#4. Why haven't you heard him bragging about it if he's trying to leverage it?
#5. This happened months AFTER he suspended his 2008 presidential campaign.
#6. Mitt's a Mormon. Mormon's believe in helping others and actually DO a lot of it. This, quite frankly, is the Romney family doing what they do.
There are a lot of things I don't like about him and his policies but I've got to give him credit where credit's due.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

He was running for president in 2008. Find something from 2007 or earlier.

That was months after he suspended his campaign. Try again.
