Why is it always seen that when the issue of unemployment is weighed it always comes down to a comparison of past presidents. It doesn't fair well (for the future) if all you are doing with this number is using it as a precadent for previous numbers. If you are banking on Trends, but then weighing the figure with previous presidents, you do understand that the trend is then without substance. The past at this point, three years in, is useless and serves only as a means to stir s**t with right and left idealologies...look at the figure and discuss that, not allow it to be a means to create waves bulls**t....The figure is to high, and anyone to knows anything about the figure should know that it is skewed for reasons mentioned in the comments

These numbers rely on a Unemployment number released by the same people that get to keep their jobs if Obama is reelected! And even better unemployment numbers from the .gov only account for people actively looking for jobs, not the people who are actually unemployed and have no prospects... So if you have been on welfare too long and get kicked off because you can't find a job your no longer unemployed! Makes sense right?!?

The unemployment rate is down because of more construction jobs due to the weather and Obama. Car manufacturing is also up. But the underemployment rate, people who need jobs but aren't getting benefits, is up 18.7%. Not good. Also, I still don't see where people are getting pay raises. Where? All in all, the unemployment rate is going down. But manufacturing jobs need to return to the U.S. 8.5% is way too high. Our target should be below 5% and the underemployment rate should be below 5%. If 18.7% gets higher, how are these people going to survive? Rioting and crime, my friends.

"The Obama team has long argued that when it comes to unemployment, it is the trend, not the actual number, that will be important."
So this might look "pretty good"...IF the Obama team is right about what matters AND the trend continues. Those are pretty big if's. One could have said the "trend is what is important" based on the fact that Carter, Reagan, and Bush I all ended up at about the same number, but that was a good bit lower than we might see in November. It's not a bad sign, but it'll only be a "pretty good" sign if it continues a couple more quarters.

This is a load of crap! A big pile of crap. From 1994-2008 the U-6 was only over 8% from 1994 to 1998. In 2009 it went over 12% and it is pretty much flat now.
So, what has Obama done? We been in the the out house for four years.

"The Obama team has long argued that when it comes to unemployment, it is the trend, not the actual number, that will be important.
And the trend, at least for now, looks pretty good (Jan. ’11 to Jan. ’12)"
Sooooo....let me get this straight...the trend, trend, trend, is better, better, better than the ACTUAL, ACTUAL, ACTUAL, number of unemployed???
Go tell, tell, tell, that to the millions, millions, millions, who are STILL, STILL, STILL, UNEMPLOYED, UNEMPLOYED, UNEMPLOYED,,,,,,,,, I thought obama campained in 2008 for "Hope and Change"? This is bias political spin, spin, spin, as usual.
Leave it to "the obama team" to spin, spin, spin, this completely out, out, out of control.
I mean damn, that sure sounds so good. Obama went from jan. 2011 (9.1%) to jan. 2012 (8.3%). That's down 0.8%. Yeah....The trend, trend, trend, is down for one year "only". But let us back up a little for those of us who are not on "the obama team".
Year---------Jan
2005---------5.3%
2006---------4.7%
2007---------4.6%
2008---------5.0%-------Bush ended with a 5.8%
2009---------7.8%-------Obama went to a high of 9.9% in dec. 2009
2010---------9.7%
2011---------8.3%
Bush ended with 5.8%...Obama's high was 9.9% That's UP 4.1%
Obama is NOW at 8.3%....That is "still" UP by 2.5%.
So spin, spin, spin, it ANY way you want, "the obama team," actual numbers DO, DO, DO, matter.
TOO THE UNEMPLOYED............................
Quit lying to the American people.

And the U-6 was around 9% at the end of 2008. It is around 15%, at least now.
So, what has Obama done exactly?

Lets see if we can figure out why:
http://research.stlouisfed.org/fred2/series/CIVPART
Oh, the labor force participation rate has declined to its lowest rate in 30 years. But ohhh, we created 243,000 jobs in January and if we just ignore the 1,177,000 working age people who left the labor force entirely we can spin it as good economic news!
