weeklystandard.com — On Saturday, February 4, a national poll from Rasmussen Reports showed Rick Santorum as the only Republican to lead President Obama in a head-to-head matchup. The next morning, a PPP poll showed Santorum suddenly leading Mitt Romney in Minnesota. So the Romney campaign responded with what are becoming its trademark tactics. Having completely ignored Santorum since New Hampshire, on Sunday afternoon the Romney team sent out a press release calling him “a proud defender of earmarks and pork-barrel spending.” The email contained an oppo-dump of news stories and quotes designed to make Santoru

It's pointless for Romney to go after Santoum. The existence of Santorum is the only thing keeping Gingrich from overpowering Romney, and the existence of Gingrich is the only thing keeping Santorum from overpowering Romney. Romney would be best served if Santorum and Gingrich hung on to the end and split the not-Romney vote.

Rick Santorum was a lawyer for professional wrestling.Back in the late 1980s, the family-values candidate played a central role in deregulating professional wrestling in Pennsylvania as part of a team that lobbied the state government to get wrestling’s status changed from sport to entertainment. WWE's formal acknowledgement that their product is "sports entertainment" has saved the company millions of dollars in taxes and state athletic commission fees. It also deregulated the pro wrestling industry and eliminated government oversight - which many have argued led to the proliferation of drug abuse among performers and premature deaths.

Rick Santorum is the anti-gay, anti-abortion guy who is running on these social issues. Never mind health reform or jobs. Or anything important or non-discriminatory, for that matter

Romney is looking more and more like Kerry in 2004. Epic flip floppers with huge personal wealth who run an all negative campaign that relies not so much on people's desire to see them win, but far more on the desire to see the sitting president lose. Will it be enough? Too soon to tell, but it didn't work for Kerry.

Plus the incumbents always have a huge advantage whenever the challenger is successfully portrayed as a flip-flopper or spoiled dilettante - people almost always prefer the "devil they know" to someone new and less predictable.

I'm not a huge Romney fan, but IMO he'd be better off taking the high road vs Santorum. Let's be real, Rick is not a threat to Mitt - let him flex his Mormon moral high ground superiority and ride this small wave out.

You don't want to aim *at* santorum. You want to aim *away from* santorum.
