I continue to be astonished that this man even has a voice in the Republican party - It says so much about the state of the Republican party today. And makes me so proud to vote Democrat.

“Look, he went to Reverend [Jeremiah] Wright’s church for 20 years, I mean, now you can question what kind of theology Reverend Wright has, but it’s a Christian church. I am not going to question the president and what the president believes in when it comes to his faith.”
Yes. This is a radical, crazy thing to say. How could ANYBODY not become a Democrat after hearing this?Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

Rick Santorum's brand of Christianity is a national embarrassment. I don't see how a sane person can't see this. Conservatives don't even make sense when they attack President Obama's faith... one minute he is a Muslim, the next minute a radical Christian, and the next the anti-christ - I mean, if you are going to make up baseless attacks, at least pick one and stick with it... I respect President Obama for his religious convictions because they are not based on throwing Jesus under the bus in order to push a political agenda - these Republican taliban-esque Christians (Rick Santorum included) can't say the same thing.
sloppyjoes7Feb 22, 2012
Santorum said that Obama "went to Rev. Wright's church for 20 years," which is a "Christian church."
What about this statement upsets you? You're ranting, but your rants have absolutely nothing to do with anything Santorum said.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

Who gives a f**k about Jeremiah Wright? Really? Wright doesn't have any power or authority in this country. The Catholic Church, on the other hand, over whom the Pope is the absolute and autocratic authority, is enormously wealthy and wields tremendous influence over the weak-minded who are willing to do whatever they're told by some German with too much eye shadow and a funny dress. Insisting you'll follow religious principals in civil government -- which, in this case is anti-democratic Catholic dogma -- ought to be classed as treason: "aiding and abetting" a foreign government.
sloppyjoes7Feb 22, 2012
So, because Santorum MENTIONED that Obama went to a Christian church, you're angry. Because you hate religion. And Catholics.

Wright doesn't have any "authority," yet his "church" built him a multi-million dollar mansion in the Chicago suburbs. Nah, this religious charlatan has no political clout. But, those damned Catholics!! Funny, but I thought the KKK didn't support Obama.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
emkaysmithFeb 23, 2012
When was the last time you heard of Wright endorsing or promoting someone for national office -- and anyone listened to him? No, he has zero political power, no matter how much his congregation may fawn on him. (And I can name you any number of white, rightwing fundamentalist preachers here in thr South whose mob of adoring followers give them $1,000,000+ every year, tax-free.)
KKK? I'm one of the few remaining lefties I know of in the Ever-So-Deep South. I was also active in the civil rights movement back in the 60s, when that was not a physically safe thing to do.
I don't "hate" religion. I think it's stupid, and simpleminded, and a complete waste of time, and has been throughout human history. It's time we outgrew such nonsense. But people can believe whatever the hell they want, I dont care.
What I *hate* is that religion, especially in the U.S., tries very hard to coerce all the rest of us into passing legislation making their perverted view of the world the standard. And they want a free ride while they do it. They all claim to be concerned only with doing "good" -- their special idea of "goodl" -- and then they take loud positions on political matters that are none of their damn business. Why is it any business of the Catholic Church if I want to buy condoms? They would certainly ban sales of prophylactics if they could, for everyone. It would be like Orthodox Jews demanding all Americans follow their dietary laws.
ike5266Feb 24, 2012
Yeah, right. Obama's "like an uncle" pastor didn't endorse the former Muslim and current Bastard-in-Chief. Only the most naive would think such silly thoughts. Anyone thinking a pastor who gets a multl-million-dollar mansion in the suburbs paid for and built by his parishioners, including Obama, doesn't have any kind of political clout in his incredibly corrupt community is a total moron -- the same kind of moron who fails to realize the Democrats had a Klan leader third in line to succeed Obama as President until Byrd died. Liberals are such idiots.

Religion easily has the greatest bullsh!t story ever told. Think about it. Religion has actually convinced people that there's an invisible man living in the sky who watches everything you do, every minute of every day. And the invisible man has a special list of ten things he does not want you to do. And if you do any of these ten things, he has a special place, full of fire and smoke and burning and torture and anguish, where he will send you to live and suffer and burn and choke and scream and cry forever and ever 'til the end of time...But He loves you. He loves you, and He needs money! He always needs money! He's all-powerful, all-perfect, all-knowing, and all-wise, somehow just can't handle money! Religion takes in billions of dollars, they pay no taxes, and they always need a little more. Now, you talk about a good bullsh!t story. Holy Sh!t! George Carlin
Most of the stories in the Bible were taken from older Egyptian, Babylonian, and Greek mythologies.

I find it laughable that Republicans would think regurgitating Jeremiah Wright would give them any political traction whatsoever. This is a pastor whose antics Barack Obama CLEARLY disavowed in 2008 and who wields NO influence in the Obama Administration whatsoever.
It's a shame Rick Santorum hasn't disavowed the Vatican's political ambitions and inappropriate meddling in U.S. political affairs or his ties to it. At the very least, Jeremiah Wright's political meddling ended at inflammatory rhetoric. It's a shame the Vatican can't make the same credible claim of innocence.
This political tactic by Santorum is a clear sign of hysterical desperation by Conservatives since they have NOTHING to justify voting for ANY of them in 2012.
Contrary to what Rick believes, his "religious freedom" is NOT unlimited. It does NOT grant him OR the Catholic Church the right to infringe upon the religious beliefs and social practices of others. Christianity is meant to provide a spiritual path, NOT a social mandate. It's up to people to take that path or not.
Rick needs to be reminded that God has already written the laws Christians were meant to follow. They were called "The Ten Commandments" and the Vatican/Rick are in NO position to amend those laws to suit their outdated, radical and misguided social agenda.

Anyone that would listen too / attend the Right Rev Wright's extremism for 20 years can't be considered sane, and anyone who honestly believed hope and change can't be considered fully sane either. Liberals, along with Republicans need to take a class on lying, just so you can learn when someone is doing it, that way, you won't be lying so much too yourselves.

Wright was President Obama's personal pastor. He was not some clergy-member in an affiliated church. Furthermore, he married Barack and Michelle and baptized their children. He was described by Obama as his "spiritual mentor".

Monsignor Charles Scicluna, J. (born 1958 or 1959) is a minister of the Roman Catholic Church and the "Lock" in the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. It deals with the most serious offenses "delicts" in the church. He is a lawyer and comes from Malta. [1]

"[The United States] government lied about their belief that all men were created equal. The truth is they believed that all white men were created equal. The truth is they did not even believe that white women were created equal, in creation nor civilization. The government had to pass an amendment to the Constitution to get white women the vote. Then the government had to pass an equal rights amendment to get equal protection under the law for women. The government still thinks a woman has no rights over her own body, and between Uncle Clarence who sexually harassed Anita Hill, and a closeted Klan court, that is a throwback to the 19th century, handpicked by Daddy Bush, Ronald Reagan, Gerald Ford, between Clarence and that stacked court, they are about to undo Roe vs. Wade, just like they are about to un-do affirmative action. God damn America … for killing innocent people. God damn America for threatening citizens as less than humans. God damn America as long as she tries to act like she is God and supreme.”

– Jan. 13, 2008: “Hillary is married to Bill, and Bill has been good to us. No he ain’t! Bill did us, just like he did Monica Lewinsky. He was riding dirty.”
– “We are deeply involved in the importing of drugs, the exporting of guns and the training of professional killers. … We believe in white supremacy and black inferiority and believe it more than we believe in God. … We conducted radiation experiments on our own people. … We care nothing about human life if the ends justify the means. I suggest that the sonogram bills passed by Texas and Virginia religious (/s) fanatics are every bit as much psychological torture as some of the practices used during historical periods of religious suppression, "persuasion" and persecution.
That's why our Constitution guarantees rights to religious freedom and freedom from persecution for purportedly religious reasons.

"Obama severed ties with Wright in 2008 after the pastor refused to apologize for his controversial comments made in a sermon about 9/11"
He severed ties with him in 2008 over a sermon that he gave in Semptember 2001 and no doubt heard many similarly inane ramblings after having sat in the pews for over 20 years at that Church. Sounds like Obama had a real Mitt Romney moment there.
Still, you'd think Santorum might be a bit more cautious about his comments about other's religious extremism, given he's a religious nutcase himself.

"Will he be a commie Atheist next?"
I thought they already covered those. In any case, the Repubs know they can't engage Obama on economics when it's begining to turn around in his favor. So, they go after him on completely bat s**t crazy stuff like contraceptives and religion because they are that desperate.
EnlightenedDiMeSFeb 22, 2012
I disagree, if in theory only. Ron and Rand, while maybe not perfect ideals, at least offer something different from the status quo. I do not understand the entirety of economics to give an in depth opinion, but I do know there is not much of a difference in the corporate engines that drive the majority of the other politicians in Washington.

Where do you live? If the economy is doing well there, I would love to move a small community of 56,000 folks there. I think the Repubs have enough ammo on the economy.
Right now they only care about wining the republican nomination. The republicans already believe that Obama is bad for the economy. They just need to know/think that the President is anti religion that way they can feel better about themselves.

1) Obama IS a "Jeremiah Wright" Christian. Obama CHOSE Wright as his pastor, so this is true by definition. It's not like Obama was born into that church and Wright was just the neighborhood pastor - Obama picked him because he both agreed with him and it was politically useful in the black Chicago neighborhoods where he sought power. Wrights' racist Black Liberation theology and hateful rants are well-documented. Obama only left him to avoid political damage with mainstream America.
2) The liberals in the thread just reek of hatred. It must be hard to live that way, feeling so superior and hating so many people who have the audacity to think differently.

BLT is more of a religious theory.
Marxism is an economic theory which is popularly misinterpreted as a combination Marxism-Leninist theory (popularized by the rise/fall of the Soviet Union which in and of itself does not hold to the classic/true definition of a Marxist economy).
BLT is NOT Marxism and, indeed, by definition cannot just pass along the word of Marxism if it is part of a religious organization.

librulklownFeb 23, 2012
Unless you know the history of Liberation Theology and Black Liberation Theology you will remain as ignorant as your post infers.
Liberation Theology was bolstered in 1968 at the Second Latin American Bishops Conference which met in Medellin, Colombia. The idea was to study the Bible and to fight for social justice in Christian (Catholic) communities. Since the only governmental model for the redistribution of the wealth in a South American country was a Marxist model, the redistribution of wealth to raise the economic standards of the poor in South America took on a definite Marxist flavor. Since those who had money were very reluctant to part with it in any wealth redistribution model, the use of a populist (read poor) revolt was encouraged by those who worked most closely with the poor. As a result, the Liberation Theology model was mired in Marxist dogma and revolutionary causes.
As a result of its Marxist leanings, Liberation Theology as practiced by the bishops and priests of South America was criticized in the 1980s by the Catholic hierarchy, from Pope John Paul on down. The top hierarchy of the Catholic Church accused liberation theologians of supporting violent revolutions and outright Marxist class struggle. This perversion is usually the result of a humanist view of man being codified into Church Doctrine by zealous priests and bishops and explains why the Catholic top hierarchy now wants to separate itself from Marxist doctrine and revolution.
Liberation Theology has moved from the poor peasants in South America to the poor blacks in North America. We now have Black Liberation Theology being preached in the black community. It is the same Marxist, revolutionary, humanistic philosophy found in South American Liberation Theology and has no more claim for a scriptural basis than the South American model has.
Black liberation theology is an offshoot of the South American liberation theology, which is largely a humanistic mindset, attempting to focus Christian theology on the plight of the poor. Essentially, black liberation theology focuses on Africans in general, and African Americans in particular, being liberated from all forms of bondage and injustice, whether real or perceived, whether social, political, economic, or religious.
Because of its extreme over-emphasis of racial issues, a negative result of black liberation theology is that it tends to separate the black and white Christian communities, and this is completely unbiblical. That is Jeremiah Wright's church.
Consider yourself to be schooled, little boy.

It means that Obama wasn't IGNORANT of the things his pastor was saying and preaching.

So you're telling me that as soon as a priest/pastor says something you don't agree with (such as "gays should not be allowed to marry" or "women should not have the right to choose to have an abortion"), you should just completely leave the church?
If everybody did that then pretty much every church would be empty.
OR maybe some people (like Obama) hear their priest/pastor say things they don't agree with but stick with the church because they grew going there and feel a connection with the Parish and the other people who go there.
It doesn't mean they 100% agree with whatever the priest/pastor says.

"Oprah had the sense to leave the church."
Well lets see what sources that know Oprah say about that.
"According to two sources, Winfrey was never comfortable with the tone of Wright's more incendiary sermons, which she knew had the power to damage her standing as America's favorite daytime talk-show host. "Oprah is a businesswoman, first and foremost," said one longtime friend, who requested anonymity when discussing Winfrey's personal sentiments. "She's always been aware that her audience is very mainstream, and doing anything to offend them just wouldn't be smart. She's been around black churches all her life, so Reverend Wright's anger-filled message didn't surprise her."
Hmm, so not only did Wright's angry speeches not even phase her, she only left because she knew that her fans and supporters might turn against her if they learned about it.
Which is EXACTLY what Obama did!'
"Obama spoke more forcefully against his former pastor, saying that he was "outraged" and "saddened" by his behavior, and in May he resigned his membership in the church."
So both of them left the church for business/political reasons after realizing that Wright's messages would come back to haunt them.
Checking sources is fun!
Ouzel7Feb 22, 2012

You said "That's what drew him" so I assume you are either psychic, have proof for that claim, or you are just projecting your hate and fear towards something that is critical of the past or a threat to the good old boy network.
Again, where is the outrage against the 700 club, Fawell ministries, the CBC or the universities they own to promote their hate against America? I think their reach is much more than Wright's.

On 9/11,,,,
"Jerry Falwell said God may have allowed what the nation deserved because of moral decay and said Americans should have an attitude of repentance before God and asking for God's protection. He specifically listed the ACLU, abortionists, feminists, gays, and the People For the American way as sharing in the blame. Pat Robertson responded with agreement."
"Show me a current candidate sitting there."
Read about all the Bush appointees from the hate monger Robertson's University

All the Republicans have against Obama is old hate and old news. They certainly do not have a valid candidate.
kasha34Feb 23, 2012
@savethesea
That's it? You think that's in the same league as:
1- accusing the Federal govt of inventing AIDS to kill their black citizens?
Really?
2- accusing the Federal govt of bringing in drugs to addict their black citizens?
Puh-lease! The above are serious and specific slanderous accusations.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
savetheseaFeb 24, 2012
can you prove they are slanderous?
librulklownFeb 23, 2012
Pedophile priests did not preach pedophilia from the pulpit. That would make your premise absolutely idiotic. Wright on the other hand preached with a chip on his shoulder about America's history against Blacks and the fact Obama sat in his church for twenty years, he was a mentor of Obama's, presided over his his marriage to Michelle and baptized their children, it would be easy to ascertain Wright's influence rubbed off on Obama.
woodsjransomFeb 21, 2012
He won in spite of that news and he is going to win again, care to speculate why?
Ouzel7Feb 21, 2012
I'm not sure Obama is going to win again. The last election he had a really complicit media. Sure, we heard the things Wright said ... but the media took the, "I didn't know about Rev. Wright" bait hook line and sinker. It was only after the election, on a PBS Frontline Road to the White House that they admitted that Obama DID know and that's why he told Rev. Wright not to show up and give a blessing when he announced he was running for president.

So Obama's pastor says some controversial things, Obama goes, "I do not agree with his views and I cannot be associated with him", and asks him to stay away.
Isn't that exactly what any NORMAL person would do if somebody they knew started saying crap like that pastor? I don't see how you can hold Obama accountable for something said by a completely different person.
Ouzel7Feb 21, 2012
Obama knew what his pastor was preaching. Wright is a hate-monger. Obama knew it would look bad.
And Obama did NOT immediately disassociate himself from Wright, if you'll remember. It took several offensive statements from Wright, in addition ... that Obama FINALLY did so.
And I don't buy it. I think it was a political move.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

What is you're point? Obama pushes birth control(rapid population expanse is a dangerous problem), and Santorum makes him out to be a tardo baby murdering socialist hate monger. Santorum preaches horses**t ideals constantly, like government conforming with scripture. He also opposes woman being able to serve their country in the way they see fit. Obama is not a stellar President, but electing Santorum would be like allowing someone with down syndrome to pilot a 777. Look up the Evangelical Churches some of these guys belong to and some of the things they teach children. The Catholic Church's indiscretions are already known. Their hypocrisy is palpable.
Ouzel7Feb 22, 2012
Nice subject change.
EnlightenedDiMeSFeb 22, 2012
OK, Obama's old preacher is a hate monger. Regardless of the time it took, Obama has distanced himself from. Santorum is a hate monger WHO IS RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT. He wants war. He wants to oppress women, gays, minorities, seculars, Muslims, and pretty much anyone not in his line of thinking. Thus their was no sunject change, only an objective view from myself, who is by the way, a registered Republican.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

So, you're saying it's a Christian church. What's the big deal again? Oh, right - he's supposed to be hating on teh gays, women, and "secular progressives." He's off message!
savetheseaFeb 22, 2012
I think he is a hate monger because he said America has screwed over the black population.
I remember when they first started playing the clips of his sermon. I actually agreed with most of what he said. The problem came when the good old boys thought he was empowering the "coloreds".
librulklownFeb 23, 2012
Wright used his pulpit to espouse racial hatred and the his hate for the United States. Mainstream Christians do believe in the hate Wright possesses.
kasha34Feb 23, 2012

He says the American govt created AIDS to kill of their black citizens!! Intolerable!!

Or are you saying not all Christian churches are "real" Christian churches? If so do you have a check list to test Christians and Christian churches to see if the are real Christians?
inajeepFeb 22, 2012
No, you misunderstand, he is kenyan muslim who is mascerading as a not-true christian. A very complicated and convoluted scenario that the GOP/TP/Lib supporters either want to push even though logically not possible or really believe and are not aware of the lack of thinking skills.

Responding to you last one but too deep in thread....
To be honest so do I but it would be hard to hold a conversation with a christian without first knowing which type he or she is, which values they have selected and how they differ from church dogma. There are also various shades of agnostics and atheists so the same holds true for me as well. I fall into the stereotype trap due to brevity more than an absolute way of thinking.
EnlightenedDiMeSFeb 22, 2012
I do it too, but I am trying to lean away from it.

Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves. (16) You will know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes from thornbushes or figs from thistles? (17) Even so, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. (18) A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit. (19) Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. (20) Therefore by their fruits you will know them. Matthew 7:15-20

Plus, Obama gave Rev Wright a contribution of $20,000.
And named his first book after one of Wright's phrases.
What's the point? The point is Obama sat there soaking in it because he is a believer in the poisonous, treasonous, hate speech Wright spouts.
savetheseaFeb 23, 2012
Look at atom's post above with Wright quotes and tell me - with the exception of the HIV quote - what he is saying that is untrue?
Remember that Pat Robertson said something completely fictitious and inflammatory about the 9/11 attacks. He has a University that many Bush appointees have attended. Where is your outrage at that?

What's untrue?
## Israel is not a state terrorist. They are the democratic underdog surrounded by rabid haters.
## We had to bomb Japan to end the war.
## The US govt doesn't "give them the drugs." Another racist slander.
## Hillary never been called a "gentlemen."? Bet you $20 Obama never has either. Not to his face. Unless it was in Indonesia.
## We (the US govt) is not involved in importing drugs.
## "We believe in white supremacy and black inferiority " No. We don't. And we have reams of overkill laws trying to ameliorate it if it exists.
