In 13 hours and roughly 58 minutes Romney earns $34,500 while being unemployed. You work a year for a salary of $34,500 and you pay more in taxes? America, by the wealthy, for the wealthy!
clitniblr036Jan 25, 2012
Exactly.
omgscienceJan 25, 2012
Are Americans really too stupid to understand how capital gains taxes work? And why 15%ish is a good rate on them? It's on par with the same rates in Europe... If you raise capital gains investors will take their investments to countries with better rates.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
etubruteJan 25, 2012
France
capital gains tax on the sale of financial instruments (shares, bonds, etc..) is a flat 32.3%, which includes 12.3% of social security taxes
Germany
The German capital gains tax is 25% plus Solidaritätszuschlag ( plus Kirchensteuer (church tax), resulting in an effective tax rate of about 28%.
Finland
The capital gains tax in Finland is 30%.
Spain
For individuals from January 1, 2010 capital tax change in Spain. First EUR 6.000 will be taxed at 19%, on the other hand, gains from EUR 6.000 will be taxed at 21%
If there's something i am missing here let me know I looked up what you claimed and couldn't find your generalized assumption. The rate varied from country to country but in general are higher then the United States.
omgscienceJan 25, 2012
All countries on your list except perhaps Germany are quickly going down the economic s**tter... Look at Hong Kong and South Korea.
etubruteJan 25, 2012
you used Europe as comparison not me I went by your post.

What he is saying is, "you gave proof he was wrong", so he must now change what he said. Great work, sir.

What we all need is better parents, with great connections! I may be 65, but am available for adoption. I will be happy to cry like a baby.
omgscienceJan 25, 2012
You're a "baby boomer" you have been crying about s**t your whole self entitled life. Your generation destroyed America and your generation expects mine and later generations to pick up the tab.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
u2canfailJan 25, 2012
I am a boomer, it happens to be when I was born. I really had no say at all in when my parents copulated.
I have been one, who for years, has said: I am for social programs but we need to pay for them. I have volunteered all my life, to help others. I even think a war should be paid in full, within 10 years. Congress vote for WAR, vote the taxes in to pay for that War with your declaration of war. It would force then to at least, look at dollar costs of what they do.
Yes it was this group that spent way more than they bothered to pay for, it is addicting to live on credit. But citizens had a lot of help from those elected officials. Reagan said, Deficits don't matter. He is a GOP hero today? The big money discovered they could buy both legislation, and deregulation. Wages went lower, and lower and to create spending, of money we didn't have anymore, BANKS came up with credit cards. Many in my group fell for the new gimmick ability to spend on s**t that would not even work by the time they paid 1/2 of the bill. ( I don't use credit myself for anything but a mortgage.) When that happened it did not benefit people like me. It did benefit those with wealth. And it benefited those who were wealthy greatly, to the eventual meltdown of the Stock Market, and my savings.
????
I do wonder if your group will do better. I hope so. But I see signs you too, are being sucked in. Is an iphone really needed, while you are "using a loan" to pay for college? I think it is awful that loans are now the way for most kids to go to college, I worked my way through school, Bachelors and Masters. But I did that working a minimum wage job. Minimum wage is so low today, Boehner should cry! I paid for a course with 30 hours of work, Boehner did too. I lived at home, went to community college and then the closest University to my home. I rode my bike.
I am watching my children. I see some real problems ahead for them and their children. I know I have to work at correcting many of today's issues to give them a shot.
That Deficit must be paid down, I agree.
Having just buried my parents, I can tell you SS and Medicare are needed, if you are not wealthy. They both worked and did own a modest home. Little savings, as they worked low wage jobs. The last years of life for the human body are the most costly. I could not have kept up with just their medical costs, and I guarantee you, I paid out of my own pocket to help with living costs, that kept rising each year. End the safety net, SS and Medicare, and then place your elderly parents on the street or pay the entire cost yourself? One medical bill today, will end you. I know you are young, but with each day, you are aging. With age, if you are human, your body too, will require much cost.
I wish you luck sir, my children are your age. They are not mad at me. They know what I personally stand for.
I do believe in help for those without my advantages, but I know what ever costs there are, must be paid.
And remember, Wall Street is not your personal friend. It has huge risk, with every dollar, and is "currently rigged" against your doing well, as a small investor. Stock price is no longer based on any company value, but the manipulated prices of hedge funds and insiders.
0ldb0yJan 25, 2012
11 hours 19 minutes and 24 seconds or it would take me 771 or so years to make what he makes in a year.

kasha34Jan 25, 2012
Yeah, he magically makes $20 million/yr doing nothing.
u2canfailJan 25, 2012
kasha, (evidently doesn't know Romney is unemployed) Romney is making $20 million doing nothing.
ultimisJan 25, 2012
Apparently u2canfail doesn't know that Romney didn't inherit any money from his father. That all the money he has and currently has invested was earned by years of work in the private sector. His envy has turned him green.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
caredjoJan 25, 2012
While this is sorta true ( he inherited some money and then gave it to charity ), I don't think he'd be in the same position, or even in the same league as he is if his parents weren't rich.
The knowledge and mentors he must have acquired because of his privileged upbringing are way, waay more influential than most people give value. Mentors especially.
Also, I speak from experience and know that isn't nearly enough to make a 'valid' point but I believe it, so that's that.
ultimisJan 25, 2012
I do not disagree with your statement. Not all rich children put into the same situation could have become successful. But yes compared to someone from a poor family and bad parenting he will naturally have a better chance of being successful. But it is still *his* success. As an individual he could have still failed (as others have). While he had additional opportunities, he was not given his current wealth by any stretch of the imagination.
caredjoJan 25, 2012
Yeah I agree with you, it's his success. I just don't see it as doing it in the same manner as any other american would, which I kinda feel it's what he's alluding.
langfordJan 25, 2012
Once someone is worth over a certain amount of money, they shouldn't be allowed in politics. They are just naturally too out of touch with the people they should be representing.
u2canfailJan 25, 2012
*But you wouldn't have rich friends for your PAC.
intrepiddesignJan 25, 2012
but...but....job creators!
Graf_OrlockJan 26, 2012
It is investment income.
Meaning that it comes from investments in businesses. Which use that investment to improve their operations creating... wait for it... jobs.
Did you really think it was in some Scrooge McDuck swimming pool?
intrepiddesignJan 27, 2012
Yep, you guessed it, Scrooge McDuck is exactly what I was thinking. Or maybe I was thinking that soulless asshats like Romney "earn" their investment income by laying people off and hiring cheap labor in...wait for it...China.
Do you really think these corporate douche bags give a damn about you or the middle class?
tehravenJan 27, 2012
I WANT to say yes . . . but it's really no :(
Graf_OrlockJan 27, 2012
If you're talking about what he was doing at Bain, you'd be correct in them evaluating acquired companies and either shaking up their managment or stripping them down, based on what build the greatest amount of shareholder value (or profit for them, given they'd be the primary or only shareholder).
As investment income, his involvement is more passive. So he's put money in stocks, bonds, maybe some income trusts tied with private equity.
" hiring cheap labor in...wait for it...China."
Still jobs. Maybe not here, but still jobs. And someone on US shores will have to manage them and market their goods here, so there's jobs there.
"Do you really think these corporate douche bags give a damn about you or the middle class?"
I don't believe anyone in either camp does. Do you? They're all bought by various interests. Its naive to think otherwise.
commovetJan 25, 2012
Ugh, makes my stomach turn, thank god we little people have the dollar menu.

limitgovJan 25, 2012
I don't like Romney, but not because he makes money. Would you rather have a guy who doesn't know how to be productive?
kasha34Jan 25, 2012
You mean like Barry O?
kenjuraJan 25, 2012
So, what...Gingrich would be better? Or Santorum?
We understand the problem. What exactly is the solution?
jameshoy78Jan 25, 2012
What is the problem? People who make money are the problem? The Romney family money was earned, not stolen... in the auto industry of all places...
The problem is self-entitlement. The belief that because someone has something you don't have, they should either be forced to share it with you, or they shouldn't have theirs because you don't have one... The reality is that in America, the problem is people have forgotten how to go and get what they want. The "playing field" is level... Just nobody wants to go out and play.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
jameshoy78Jan 25, 2012
Also, his charitable donations... around the 15% mark, which (speaking of calculators) comes out to 3.24 million. Whereas Obama is in the 1% donation percentile... and Joe Biden... in 2011 donated a total of $369... which is surprising even to me. I didn't know Biden could even count that high.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
aadyssJan 25, 2012
How long would it take him to earn your salary? Only the childish and envious care about that question. If he did exactly the same as "you" did, he would earn the same as "you", slate. That's how it works.
kasha34Jan 25, 2012
$21 mil? BFD. There are sports players and movie stars that make more.
BALDWIN Income calculator:
How long would it take to earn HIS salary?

If you haven't noticed, Digg slants way left... I asked about John Kerry (same state as Romney)... Watch how fast my comment get buried. :)

You nailed it.
tehravenJan 27, 2012
Um . . . no1 cares about Kerry . . .
jameshoy78Jan 25, 2012
How much did your favorite athlete make last year? Do you have a calculator for that? And how about your Mr. John Kerry or Bill Clinton - who won't make a 40 minute speech for less than $1M. Oh right... most of them aren't republicans, so... yea.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
adaguyJan 25, 2012
This athlete is running for pres? If so, he would fall under the same scrutiny.
ganjadude4391Jan 25, 2012
and the others? kerry? clinton? obama only donated 1% of his money back to the community, mitt donated 15% back to the community or biden? a wooping 269 bucks? I donated more than that and ive been out of work since july!
adaguyJan 25, 2012
I pay little or no attention to what any of them donate. If they thought their tax returns would not be made public do you still think they would make these donations?
I don't even claim the money I spend to help others on my taxes, as I don't donate much to organizations, but I do donate quite a bit to people that I know are in need. All these politicians should do the same thing.
ganjadude4391Jan 25, 2012
did you not hear me? I made bigger donations than biden and i dont expect my taxes to become public, you seem to be very cynical. I know they are politicians, but sometimes people do things just because its a good thing to do
adaguyJan 25, 2012
I work a lot with one particular charitable organization. We have used various methods to raise funds for this organization. No one in this group gets a paycheck, our work is 100% voluntary. No one asks me if I expect to write off the time I spend doing this. And in the past 20 years with this group, it's become clear to me that 10% of the people do 90% of the work when it comes to charity.
One method we have used is for members to stand in a well traveled intersection with plastic buckets, and request donations from vehicles as they stop at the red light. I find that the people who can afford the least, give the most. A man with a jalopy, that barely is running down the road will always donate a buck or two, but the wealthy attorney, tourist, or businessman will commonly stop 100 to 200 feet back from the intersection, rather than be confronted with the opportunity to donate.
This intersection I refer to is near the local WalMart, and commonly, I have seen a mom with 4 screaming kids, and a 20 year old station wagon donate, yet the wealthier simply roll up their windows and look the other way. Anyone on here who has taken part in fund raisers will know exactly what I'm talking about.
ganjadude4391Jan 25, 2012
you are totally correct about that method of collections, as someone who has ran those fundraisers in the past you are not wrong. But it is a little unfair to say anything about that. is that lawyer funding the local little league? is that big time guy in the caddy helping fund the fire department?
so I see your point on small donations, those with less def give more, but we neglect to see what the people who dont throw a few quarters in are doing behind the scenes. If you have been working with charities that long you should know that is how most rich people tend to give, as you said, without anything in return
tehravenJan 27, 2012
Y'think these guys know people in need? ga'maaaaan GA'MAAAAAAAAAAN! :P
