splicetoday.com — It appears to be the oddest of odd-couple arrangements: The Maryland wing of the AFL-CIO is supporting gay marriage. And in doing so out of simple social justice, organized labor is performing a possible political disservice to Barack Obama, the organization’s presumed choice for president. Maryland is overwhelmingly Democratic, heavily Catholic and one-third black. The Catholic Church opposes gay marriage and already has cautioned Gov. Martin O’Malley (D-Catholic) to put his religion ahead of secular law. Black clergymen have fought attempts to legalize gay marriage as destructive to the

Can't please everyone.

You hit it right on the nail, Langford. There is no one size fits all, not even in clothing like some tend to think. It is impossible for any one person to please every person.

It doesn't matter. Standing up for the the right and just thing is worth any political price.

I think the author, a diehard liberal who covered the LBJ administration back when newspapers mattered, makes a salient point about the seeming disconnect between religious black voters who are opposed to gay marriage despite a near-monolithic support for the Democratic Party.
President Obama has no fear here in Maryland: it's a very safe state. But I wonder if the absurd debate over gay marriage will affect his standing with religious Hispanics in key states.
It boggles my mind that in 2012 anyone could possibly care about an issue like gay marriage. It's a personal decision and no one else's business. In some ways, marriage is a financial contract, with real ramifications. In any case, to state the obvious, it's not as if traditional marriage, with a very high divorce rate, is any model of moral virtue.

You made a great point in your first paragraph. If Hillary Clinton was running in the 2008 election, prop 8 would of failed in California. However, because Obama ran, more traditional socially conservative black voters came out and voted and passed the prop.

Not to mention that supporting gay marriage would be enough for them to vote for someone else. As if that is the most important issue this country is facing right now. "Doesn't matter if the other guy is wrong about everything else, he agrees with me on gay marriage so I'll vote for him." Makes absolutely no sense.

"Doing the Right Thing Might Hurt"
Wow. Truth in the news? Whodathunkit???
vitriolandangstJan 9, 2012
Obama has done squat for Labor in this country.
I'm happy to see Unions standing up for what is right.
Obama will win in November, because the Republicans are too damn scary -- but it's not like he's earned it either.
austinjameshereJan 10, 2012
I don't see it hurting him there simply because, unless something changes, people are going to vote based on the economy. If the economy keeps improving like it has been, Obama will likely have an easy win... If it doesn't keep improving, then he'll have a fight on his hands. Either way, the GOP has a fight on their hands, I think people the Republican label doesn't carry the same trust it once did. In the end, most people care more about their pocket book than gay rights, but I congratulate AFL_CIO for doing the right thing, even if it isn't politically optimal to do so at this time.

You know, one page back on Digg it says the Republicans will be hurt by their anti-gay stance. Can't anyone figure out what the heck is going on? :)

My biggest problem with the entire article? "The Catholic Church opposes gay marriage and already has cautioned Gov. Martin O’Malley (D-Catholic) to put his religion ahead of secular law." If you can't see what is wrong with that statement, you are a major part of the problem.
mattgee725Jan 9, 2012
What a joke of a headline. There's no way in hell Obama is losing Maryland.
blinker1315Jan 9, 2012Submitter
You didn't read the article. Yes, of course Obama wins MD. It's the margin that matters, not especially to Obama, but MD's Democratic governor Martin O'Malley, who has eyes on the White House four years from now.

Not if the gay vote shows up!
drcrankJan 10, 2012
Anyone who cares what Obama stands for isn't going to let the AFL-CIO's (correct) stand on this issue influence their vote for the man.

Always heard about union "pipefitters," always wondered what thet was, now I know, I guess. And now I get why they like Obama.
