Bill of Rights Amendment I
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
They do have a right to protest. And all the people on here saying that they don't should be careful as one day it may be your rights that are ignored.

Since when do park police have riot gear? dang
hibby76Feb 5, 2012
The OWS crowd hasn't exactly been cooperative with law enforcement.........
luke1h7Feb 5, 2012
I'm not saying the park police didn't have the right to go in there and kick them out, but why not just use actual riot police? Maybe it was a split force or something. Or maybe I'm just thinking of a park ranger, when in a city like DC they need actual park police. Strikes me as odd, that's all.
sicofitFeb 5, 2012
You are misunderstanding the term. In DC the Park Police are the Capital Police Force... not related to "parks".

Oooh
glassagateFeb 5, 2012
Non-violent resistance....curse them!
See, the Occupy types don't have corporate
backing, like the Tea Party did/does, to pay
for permits.
hibby76Feb 6, 2012
They have hundreds of thousands of dollars in a formalized account. More than enough to pay for permits. ........and they do have corporate backing.
glassagateFeb 5, 2012
Those cops needed that gear, when they
were going to go face to face with a bunch
of hippies.....hippies who....
Drum circles, chants, human chains....
Bring out the orange spray paint....I mean
pepper spray for bears.

Yea, cause being hit in the face with a brick doesn't hurt at all..........

Looks like they were enforcing the "no camping" provisions.
Good for them.
KapsiotFeb 4, 2012
Goodbye OWS. Nobody understood or supported you.

.......or cared........... It was like watching a slow-motion train wreck. You feel bad, but you can't really look away.
And don't bury this if you don't like it, just point your hands down and wiggle your fingers.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

When the Park Police say 'no camping' on our public property, that is what they mean, as proven by this enforcement. OWS people seem to have a basic lack of understanding of laws. Or could it be that they are such spoiled people that they don't think they need to follow rules and laws?
The worst thing that officials can do is to let scofflaws get away with breaking the law for a time. OWS folks see this as a win, and it gives them incentive to continue to break the law.
The officials need to crack down the very first day. The jails are ready, so let's use them. While we are at it, let's collect maximum fines upon convictions to help pay for the police overtime we are having to pay for.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
nerysFeb 4, 2012
right to redress of grievances is "superior" to "rule of no camping"
I say fill the jails and keep going. keep going till the jails can hold no more. No compromise no negotiation
Our way and only our way. refuse to pay all fines refuse to recognize the courts. if these people are already largely homeless they have nothing to lose.
the only reason the "occupy" movement is failing is not enough SHEEP are converting.
if enough people stand up they will have no choice but to bow to compliance.
the officials are the scofflaws. the politicians and corporations are the criminals. the traitors.
"WE" make the rules here. NOT THEM. we need only stand up and enforce this fact.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

You seem to lack basic understanding of law.
Your law seems to be anarchy, which will be crushed repeatedly by filling the jails and courtrooms with the smelly miscreants who choose to break our laws.
Head 'em up, move 'em out.
nerysFeb 4, 2012
My law is the constitution. we call that a republic not anarchy. it does start with the words "WE THE PEOPLE"
In my book they are not breaking the law as the law is invalid in this situation.
a RIGHT may not be converted into a crime. THAT is the law.
that "invalidates" the no camping "RULE" and "trespassing" laws on public property in my book.
YOU seem to have an extreme lacking in the basics of OUR LAWS ie the constitution in this country.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
partrowFeb 4, 2012
You and they seem to want to make the law whatever it is these losers decide they want from others at the moment. If you and they think you "make the rules here", you are going to have a very rude awakening in the coming months.
The U.S. Constitution does not grant the right to individuals to make up laws and rules as they go along, at their whim. Law is methodically created and reinforced by our legal system - not by a bunch of unkempt entitlement demanding losers who think that chanting and bitching will get them what they want like it did from their parents.
I agree with you, fill up the jails and courts, and prosecute and fine them to the fullest extent of the law. I would guess that the National Guard will be brought into some spots later in the year, and they know how to tell the law breaking smelly slobs how the cow ate the cabbage.
nerysFeb 4, 2012
The us constitution grants NO RIGHTS. it prohibits infringement of rights.
that right their shows you know little of which you speak.
The constitution prohibits interference with the right to redress of grievances and free speech.
The state has no rights. the state has privileges. rights are superior to privileges.
People have rights.
The supreme court has decided in several cases that a RIGHT can not be converted into a CRIME.
if a law makes a right criminal the LAW is null and void on inception.
For example the patriot act is NOT LAW in this country. its enforced yes but its not law. it was null and void the moment it was signed because it directly violates the constitution.
You fail to recognize the difference between "enforced" and "lawful"
WE the people decide what is lawful. Sadly we have largely abdicated this power to the crooks running the place because we have grown lazy.
Our legal system is largely corrupt and unlawful.
NOW when two "rights" conflict the superior right override the inferior right.
You have the right to free speech you don't have the right to preach on my doorstep.
SO for example I would agree with removal of protestors from say the Smithsonian or the "inside" of a police station.
a public park however is the "obvious" location for a public protest and when its IGNORED that right expands as much as needed to accommodate the right to speech and redress of grievances.
You do not have the right to "camp out" anywhere you want but you DO have the right to see redress of grievances. In this case if that means camping out to deliver the message then the right to redress of grievances is SUPERIOR to the "rule" of no camping
Rule of no camping becomes null.
Enforcement is illegal and a violation of the constitution.
THAT is the law.
it is not being enforced in this manner but THAT IS the law.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

"that right their shows you know little of which you speak."
That line is both amusing and disturbing on a couple of levels.

+1 for "they know how to tell the law breaking smelly slobs how the cow ate the cabbage."
hibby76Feb 5, 2012
Their "right to assemble" hasn't been infringed. They want to show up and claim something that belongs to someone else as "theirs" and forcibly take it away.
No one is saying that they can't assemble however they're simply being asked to follow the laws that are in place. The wall street crowd could similarly argue that the trading regulations that are in place "simply aren't valid and therefore they can't be broken".
A Judge can made that decision, but not someone who decides to camp out in a park indefinitely.
hibby76Feb 5, 2012
"the only reason the "occupy" movement is failing is not enough SHEEP are converting."
............that and they're clueless, nuts, and largely really screwed up people.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
hibby76Feb 5, 2012
They're very hypocritical. They want more laws for Wall street to follow but they think that they can pick and choose which laws are important to follow in city squares.
Should wall street be able to pick and choose which laws and regulations it follows too?
caine22Feb 4, 2012
yay. and no violence at all for the occupy bitches to throw around as an excuse.

They're not goin' *anywhere*. They're here to stay. You can take away their tents temporariliy. They'll still stay in the park and they'll put up their tents in some other park. There's lots and lots of parks all over DC. Lots of green space. Keep dreaming, you greedy right wing mutherf*ckers. ROTFLMAOComment is buried, click here to see the rest.

Go to YouTube and search "former soviet citizen ows" to see what the true OWS is all about. If a former Soviet Citizen pointing out for you how dangerous and scary these people are isn't enough, then there is nothing that will wake you up to the truth.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

About time.
This use to be a really nice park. Surrounding the park are people in offices working for every cause under the sun. All ideologies, causes, and companies and non-profits, national, international, etc - many of them engaged in political battles with each other.
But every day at lunch, everyone put aside their differences and gathered at this park to enjoy the sun and the atmosphere of civility. The grass was a lovely green and the benches were clean - very unliked the Franklin Square park a block away.
But then the OWS people came and the only thing they've accomplished is destroying this one small patch of common enjoyment and unity in a city that is otherwise divided.
Nice work, douchebags.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
