cnn.com— President Barack Obama is unveiling a new jobs initiative geared toward veterans Friday that the administration says will put thousands of former men and women in uniform back to work.

Veterans absolutely need jobs. Veterans absolutely deserve our support. I do have the feeling this will work out for them, in GOP members, as well as the plight of the 9/11 rescue groups. Yes, you did your job, now suffer in silence. We don't need you anymore.
If it's not directly for war, but rather to support vets when they come home or get out of the service, it's sure to be obstructed by the conservatives in the Republican Party.
Most farmers vote republican also, but they are just figuring out that when we allow milk imported from Argentina, it's difficult fot anyone with a dairy herd to make a living here. People are gradually getting wise the republickin politics. Between the closed factories, and the outsourcing of jobs, coupled with the high fuel prices, and the mortgage collapse, it's kind of hard for them to keep focused on one party.
I suggest you start living in the present, and not the past. And, Clinton isn't the president anymore, in case you haven't noticed. And neither is Bush.
Obama is, whether you like it or not. So, get used to it.
Wait, I remember when the tax subsidy for BIG OIL was being voted on. It was said then that the price of oil would rise, if they did not get the subsidy. They did get the subsidy, and guess what, the price of oil did rise anyway!
Explain here:
Preference for military vets in hiring for law enforcement? I'd bet there already IS a preference for military vets. Especially anyone who's been in combat. Likewise for fire fighters.
Every week Obama is rolling out plans to benefit large groups of voters.
This one is for veterans. Earlier it was for religious people.
Who is next on his candy list?
.... and the results of: 1. Piss on you economics
2. War that solved nothing
3. Banks that are larger now than they were when they were 'too big to fail".
4. Deregulated Wall Street
5. NO CLEAN AIR or WATER
Yes, You should be thinking about future generations.
But I am sure this will not help out the republican interests as much as actually waging war, so I am not holding my breath. This is an initiative to help those that we have "supported" from our couches for all these years. Any opposition in congress should be countered by a fierce call, email campaign by every American, especially those that flew a flags in support, put a Support the Troops sticker on their car, or mentioned their absolute support. Let's see how patriotic America responds to these men and women who were put into a s**tty position.
Why not just give every veteran a big chunk of cash and let them live tax-free for life? Keep President Obama's social engineering bulls**t spending outa this? Give our veterans the CASH and tax advantage!
Romney never served. Obama never served. They are both wealthy and they will both say anything to get the money and the power.
Obama, himself, is Romneyesque. Coincidentally, Romney is also very Obamaesque.
Don't insult veterans by comparing them to lying pieces of crap.
I am a parent of a veteran who had brain surgery. Injured in IRAQ.
I wIll speak for vets, sir, ON BEHAVE OF ALL OF THEM I MET, AT THE HOSPITAL. A jobs initiative for veterans is needed. With what we spent on war, why is cost an issue at all?
JOBS are needed for veterans. A government grift-laden-spend-all jobs initiative is quite different from jobs. I wish your son/daughter well in finding an initiative.
Better yet, a job!!
so instead of giving them jobs that would benefit from their training fighting for your country, you just want to give them a lump sum and send them away? lets go one step deeper and consider your proposal. lets say we give them all $5000 for all their time in service multiply that by around 22 million (http://www.va.gov/VETDATA/Veteran_Population.asp) and we get $110 billion. and then would we only give this for one year? now which would would be cheaper, help more people, and keep the streets safer? and thats not even including the tax advantage.
Obama's understanding of the marketplace only includes government taking money from producers and paying people hire others. He calls that a jobs plan.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
And.... if it works as planned those veteran citizens have jobs. When they have jobs they earn money. When they have money they support themselves by spending that money. Then the money they spent gives others jobs, and companies income. If all pay taxes, to the government, we can pay the debt.
It is a fascinating circle. And it works.
The ONLY ITEM all economists agree on, is: we have a consumer driven economy.
Bachmann, et al: "We can't believe the traitor Obama is withdrawing troops from Iraq according to the timeline set by the previous administration! This will just put a lot of veterans into the workforce, making unemployment worse!"
White House: "Here's a program to put them back to work."
Haters: "Big government nanny project!!!111one11cos(0)!!!!"
I'm paraphrasing, but Michele Bachmann really did say that: she would have preferred for the government to keep spending billions of dollars keeping our armed forces in Iraq, to avoid the issue of having to employ them back home.
In other words, she wanted Iraq to be our big government nanny project.
So what do you suggest we do for the large influx of troops coming home in 2012-13, who have to get accustomed to civilian life. What's the republican plan?
I am not putting you on the spot I am really curious on what alternatives are being proposed on the other side to help these men and women who have been fighting these wars for years.
Their plan? s**t talk. What else would it be? Regardless, they don't have plans, they have schemes, like keep unemployment as high as possible through obstructionism and blame it on Obama, even though they love to vomit up their famous talking point of "goberment don't create no jobs". Looks like it's not working since the economy added 250K jobs and unemployment is at 8.3%. A few more months like January and what will the mouth breathers at the Grand Old (withering) Party have to s**t talk?
In fact when Mitt gets the nomination, what is his plan of attack in debates AT ALL? Health Care? Good luck with that one. Military? Ask OBL what he thinks of Obama's military chops, oh yeah that's right, he's f**king dead. Job Creation? Mitt's track record of corporate raiding and mass layoffs via Bain won't look to well against a recovering economy. What am I missing, that's right, the god stuff. Technically Obama is more of a christian than Mitt is.
On paper, Obama should stand up quite well to the GOP litmus test, so what is it....hmmmm....there's got to be something they don't like about him....
Please at least recognize Mittens both created jobs and ended jobs while at BAIN. The jobs he ended paid well, the jobs he created are retail minimum wage. He says he wants us all to be rich, like him.
So, he and BAIN paid for legislation that got him, and others who make $$$Millions a top tax rate of 15%, while his salaried workers who make a paltry $34,500 pay 25% a full 10% more because they work for a living! That way, we never catch up, do we.
I don't know what the Republican plan is. I'm not a Republican any more. Sorry.
I'm not saying to not help veterans. Let's just keep in mind that government tends to screw up things sometimes more than help. If you really want to help veterans, then get out of the way of the economy and let it heal itself.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
David suggests they: all be killed, and never return.
He was for the war. He now hates troops returning home.
That answer is all he has left and makes sense when you look at his past positions.
Veterans don't need a plan. They are accustomed to self reliance, and don't need the help of liberals who previously hated them.
They have GI bills. They have loan guarantees. Their are a whole host of options available. They usually have front of line privileges for many government jobs. Local American Legions/VFW's also provide networks in which vets can utilize to find private employment.
The liberals are once again just trying to use these vets as a political issue, and I find that disgusting.
And before you even think about idiotically typing some "Why do you hate vets?" message, I am one. I served in the USMC during the time of the first Gulf War. Total years in was 9.
Typical..another plan to create public employee union members to donate their money and in kind contributions to his machine.
If you want to help veterans, get the hell out of our way and let us live our lives.
See? THAT is what I'm talking about when it comes to trusting government to do anything right. They would have been better off to just hand over $$$ to the veterans, pay off their mortgages, pay their rent for a year, etc. rather than create ANOTHER government program with its own unthinking and uncaring bureaucracy.
so instead of giving them jobs that would benefit from their training fighting for your country, you just want to give them a lump sum and send them away? lets go one step deeper and consider your proposal. lets say we give them all $5000 for all their time in service multiply that by around 22 million (http://www.va.gov/VETDATA/Veteran_Population.asp) and we get $110 billion. and then would we only give this for one year? now which would would be cheaper, help more people, and keep the streets safer?
No, jobs would be preferable. But, the government sucks when it comes to creating a vibrant economy where jobs are plentiful. The best it can do is lower taxes and regulation and leave people alone.
From a practical standpoint which is all that really matters at the end of the day, the government would better serve veterans by giving them money than trying to create jobs for them. Seriously.
Don't think so? Did the Stimulus package work? Or would it have been better to simply pay off every mortgage in America with that money (because you actually could have done so)? Good intentions mean nothing. Practical results rule the day.
the best they could do is give people jobs so they can support their families and get off of the tit of Uncle Sam. it seems odd that just yesterday this was your standpoint of the unemployed. money only lasts for so long and all you are giving them is a crutch. we need to fix the problem not just make it go away.
the stimulus package worked, it was the corporate bailouts that hurt everyone and made the debt so great. yes i would have loved them to take care of my mortgage but they gave the money to the banks responsible for the collapse like they were going to help. instead they paid their bills and still wanted more.
and at the end of the day they are not making jobs they are just making sure that the police and fire department are well staffed by qualified people. i know it sucks that normal people wont be able to become firemen/ police once this gets into effect but i would rather have someone that fought for our country and is willing to still put their life on the line for it, than someone that got out of high school with a chip on their shoulder wanting to lay down the law. we have enough of them now.
and to reiterate my original point just to "pay off their morgages would cost over a hundred times the amount of this bill. my original calculations only gave out $5000. what is the normal morgage? $50000 or more. you might want to make this package at least $5 trillion to make this happen.
I think I saw where we lost a "box filled with cash" during the IRAQ war. Go find it for us. Then use every dime spent, past what they expected the IRAQ war to last, 9 years - 90 days. Now, we have cash for jobs for veterans.
Problem solved.
I wonder what other promises he will make while on the campaign trail this year. I would have been more impressed had he made this announcement two or three years ago.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
i would agree with you except the recall of troops from Iraq was fairly recent , the timeline for Afghanistan is in 2013 and the timetable for Iraq was set by Bush. He couldn't have possibly done it two or three years ago.

There's another reason that this will be important. The troop cutbacks that have been mentioned with the defense budget

Time to see all the "Support our Troops" folks put their money where their mouth is.
friday1970Feb 5, 2012
You do know that they unemployment rate of all veterans is still below that of the national average, right?
Because of what they learned about personal responsibility, most do end up getting jobs with no need for a helping hand.
I know this is different in your family's case, however.

Really. There are 25 million military vets in the U.S. Would you say that these military vets mostly vote Democrat or Republican?
