Conservatives get all upset when they can't make stuff up with impunity. Let's go through some myths and smears, shall we?
* The whole birther thing, which involves any combination of many lies and falsehoods:
- Obama's Hawaiian CoLB is not legal proof of his place of birth (FALSE)
- Obama isn't a natural-born US citizen because his father wasn't an American citizen (FALSE)
- Obama's Social Security number is fraudulent (FALSE)
- Obama's long-form birth certificate is a fraud (FALSE)
and other variants of these.
* The whole Obama-is-a-secret-Muslim nonsense.
* There was a strange myth a couple years back that Obama was going to ban fishing at many rivers, lakes, and shores. This was 100% fiction.
http://digg.com/news/story/Obama_rules_will_ban_fishing_in_lakes_nations_oceans
* There were quite a few claims in 2008 that Obama was going to pass sweeping anti-gun legislation, including:
- Prosecuting people who use guns in self-defense in their own homes
- Banning the sale of almost all hunting ammunition
- Increases taxes on firearms and ammo by 500%
There were, of course, all FALSE. Unsurprisingly, these same lies are already being repeated for this election season.
* The LIE that Obama used a teleprompter when speaking to a class of 6th graders
http://www.snopes.com/politics/obama/photos/6thgrade.asp
* The myth that the KKK endorsed Obama in 2008
These are but a tiny percentage of the myths and lies we've seen in the last few years, each one of them breathlessly repeated by right-wing hacks on digg. THIS is why the Obama campaign has a bunch of people dedicated to clearing stuff like this up: the GOP is a 24/7 smear machine.

I dugg you up because you are right on the issues you posted, I much prefer to debate about the facts and I hate it when I get told I believe that garbage and have to defend myself against it. Those issues are trivial and they are what people focus on to distract from the more important issues (both sides do this).
The only one that still is an area of concern to me is the gun control stuff, but that is based on Obama's history before being President and the concern that a second term will give him the ability to follow through with some of his previous thoughts without risk of losing the next election.

Obama embraces Super PAC's by necessity, not preference (as most Conservatives do). While you may ignore that distinction, we're all aware that it took SCOTUS Conservative judicial activism to make this circumstance a necessity.
If it rubs you wrong, too bad. Democrat's didn't pour gas on political corruption in this country, Conservative ideologues on the Supreme Court did. They did it under the assumption it would tilt the nation's government squarely in favor of the Conservative movement. It was a political power grab, nothing more.
Of course, they never counted on the fact that corporate money could just as easily be used against their cause as any other. Mitt Romney has proven that fact.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

"Democrat's didn't pour gas on political corruption"
That's funny, oh the mighty and moral Liberals, they can do no wrong. Liberal's never lie, hope and change has been done and we just haven't realized it yet? The transparency of the white house has come full force and wall street has given more to the right, oh wait, that's wrong, wall gives more to Liberals, Banks give more to liberals, liberals pushed banks to give loans to people they knew could not afford them.
Oh no, no corruption there.
karmashockFeb 15, 2012
I know... chicago is the most corrupt city in the US... don't believe me, ask the FBI. They're dealing with CONVICTED public officials on a consistent basis from that sewer.
And who runs the place? Democrats.
And where did Obama base his political career? Chicago.
I'm not saying he's corrupt... but he built his career in a cesspit. As evidence, when he left to be president the governor of his state tried to SELL his Senate seat. Who does that?
Welcome to Illinois.
And yet these idiots are so brainwashed that they think their party is pristine? Which party had a congressmen that stored bribe money in his freezer? Again... democrat... again... don't believe me... ask the FBI.
Republicans aren't clean either but we've got nothing on those jackoffs when it comes to being slimy. They take it to the next level.
We're sneaky sometimes... lets call that a survival trait. But we're not convicted as often for being outright crooks.

truthroxFeb 18, 2012
I've never suggested Democrat's were incapable of corruption, but history proves they are far less corrupt than their conservative counterparts. We're reminded of this truth ever day.
I'll simply remind you that Liberal SCOTUS justices opposed the Ctizens United decision which unleashed a tidal wave of corruption, while conservative SCOTUS justices voted in lockstep to enable it. It's a shame historical truth eludes so many conservatives as they shed their "crocodile tears".

True, it could be seen as propaganda since the vast majority of the public has, at best, a fragmented view of the big picture, but that's the world we live in today. I have to wonder if you're actually aware of the book. You seem to be and yet not.
In the book, there was a propaganda organization called the "Ministry of Truth."
For just a moment, take your head out of your ass. I know it's bright out. Just for a minute then you can put your head right back up there. If you start a propaganda division called the "truth team" then your opponent is going to make the Orwell reference. That's just automatic. And you're a fool if you make it that easy. You might as well just put a sign on your face that says "kick me."
What's funny is that his supposedly sophisticated "team" didn't realize how badly that would backfire.
These guys routinely make it very clear that they're if anything only moderately more sophisticated then the average American... which makes them less sophisticated then just about everyone that preceded them for the last 100 years.
Where did he get these clowns? They're some of the most clueless twits I've seen in national politics. I expect this kind of senselessness from local politicians... for small towns. Maybe they'd be clever in a town of 10k when running for the city council. But on the national stage for the president? Hilarious. And he's supposed to be the smart one... *laughs until he cries*
It's funny because you're stupid... it's sad because you've somehow become responsible.

I opened in fact by explaining the reference to Orwell which you seem to not fully understand. And then I explained why Obama's advisers or whatever they're calling themselves made a hilariously stupid mistake. And I just built from there.
You made it way too easy. Are you doing it on purpose?
Is this some kind of hipster thing where you're acting like an idiot but it's just ironic? If so, you got me. I didn't see through your layers of feigned idiocy to the underlying joke.

Obama has been party to bailouts by voting in the affirmative as a senator.
treehugger87Feb 13, 2012
If the Right would not resort to propaganda, there would be no need for organizing supporters to call out the lies.
I think there is a more than fair argument that the deficit was the fault of the Bush administration's failed economic policies that also led to massive foreclosures (including billions of dollars of illegal and overly aggressive foreclosures) and the bank bailouts. You can argue that Obama's military interventions were illegal wars, but the Authorization for Use of Military Force of September 11, 2001 says otherwise.
The Patriot Act being renewed is pretty unforgivable. Too bad the track record of all of the Republican candidates (except Ron Paul) is that they support the Patriot Act.
You have some balls using "epic failure" on Obama after the 8 years the rest of us spent making the case for what an epic failure Bush was, and begging you not to vote for him.
Here's what I'm begging for this time. Attack Obama on the things he's actually done. There is plenty there. There is plenty of room for us all to agree (the Patriot Act, for one) and make a real difference. If all we do is bicker, we all lose.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

Its a very poor state of affairs when the best you can do (not you specifically, but Obama--the guy youre defending) is claim that you do not suck quite as bad as the opposition. Isnt that awful?
That seems to be Obama's strategy: I dont suck as much as the republicans do. He might even be right. But does it help to not suck as much as the group that really sucks? No, it does not help. We need leadership that doesnt suck! Dare we hope for some leadership that is not even on the side of sucking but is actually on the side of competence?

This shows you where both major parties stand, and it's not with America or the people.
When people stop listening to what either side is going to do for THEM, and are more concerned with what is best for all of us, nothing will change. Obama, Romney, Sanitarium, etc aren't going to do a damn thing for us. There are people who care, these people will never be elected because neither side gives a damn about anything but themselves, America will have to self destruct before people wake up. History proves this correct, but it will probably be to late.

Paradox: Similar to circular reasoning, a paradox is a logical statement or group of statements that lead to a contradiction or a situation which (if true) defies logic or reason. Typically, however, quoted paradoxical statements do not imply a real contradiction and the puzzling results can be rectified by demonstrating that one or more of the premises themselves are not really true, a play on words, faulty and/or cannot all be true together. But many paradoxes, such as Curry's paradox, do not yet have universally accepted resolutions. The word paradox is often used interchangeably with contradiction.

That is not the issue though. The issue is should the gov't be giving TAXPAYER money to private industry? If you believe in the constitution that made this nation great, the answer is no.
I am sick and tired of government taxing the hell out of me for programs I will never benefit from (SS and medicare) and using my hard earned money to invest in failing companies and infrastructure in states I don't live in.
peppermintpigFeb 14, 2012

"Because if the government never does it, nobody will have the incentive to do so."
Make a lot of assumptions about a fictional entity and pretend that people who call themselves government are not also human beings. Somehow it's acceptable to forcibly take people's money when people calling themselves government say that the government says it should be done.
music2play1Feb 13, 2012
the point is, ybevar1, even if you aren't driving on the roads that are being repaired, the goods you consume are travelling on them. Social Security is money that gets fed directly back in to our economy through property rentals, services paid for and the money that gets paid to health services workers. Medicare protects everyone, a healthier America is better for everyone, period. (We are the only f**king industrialized nation in the world who hasn't figured this one out yet...)
If you are mad about investments, why not end useless and detrimental agriculture subsidies that only benefit a handful of mega corporations?
The point is, when the country is doing well as a whole, we all do better individually. Investments in infrastructure and health benefit everyone. In case your shallow world view hasn't quite computed this yet, it's all connected.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
FrankLuskaFeb 15, 2012
And we also haven't figured out yet that we run a loss on Medicare, SS is so far behind inflation it may never catch up, and other countries run a sovereign wealth fund to negate inflation and some actually make a profit for their retirees. We are indeed behind the times.
We all know why subsidies are not done away with, people would throw a fit for having to pay 6 - 7 dollars a gallon for gas and 30 - 40% more for food, plus, you can't trust the government to stop taking that money in taxes. They would want to keep the money to spend on other wasteful things.
Infrastructure indeed is in a sorry state, with thousands and thousands of bridges needing replacement, roads needing maintenance and new ones need building.
Just look at Oklahoma, when they spent a massive amount on infrastructure, they reaped the benefits for years. When they stopped spending on these projects, their economy went down the tubes with it.
The single best and most cost saving thing we could do for health care, is to stop eating crap food, I went to Walmart yesterday to get some popcorn, something i don't normally do, but well over 80% of the people in there were severely overweight. Most women weighing well over 200 Lbs, some may have weighted 250+. We are what we eat.

If this is your vision for America, then you're tragically delusional. Chinese/Indian/Brazilian SOE's (aka State Ownd Enterprises) are killing the U.S. on trade and it's NOT because they are economically "superior".
While people, like you, insist we abandon our trade protections, you ignore the existence of trade protections and predatory business practices by U.S. trading "partners". The result? A SIGNIFICANT deterioration of U.S. economic strength/vitality AND our quality of life.
STOP attacking your fellow Americans and aim your rhetorical "guns" at the nation's REAL adversaries/enemies...GLOBAL TRADING "partners" who cheat to win the ongoing trade "competition".
ybevar1Feb 13, 2012
@eraptor
Those countries are by no means economically superior, they manipulate their currencies and have a lower standard of living, which makes it cheaper to do business there.
I am afraid unless corporate taxes are lowered and unions loosen their grip a little bit, manufacturing is dead in this country.
I work for a importer of textiles. Dalton, GA was the textile manufacturing capital of the world at one point. Today there are empty factories and rampant unemployment. If my company decided to continue producing goods there, we would have been out of business a long time ago.
The CEO at my company has said that union labor there is far too costly and the corporate tax rate is too high to even consider producing goods there anymore.
At the end of the day, we cannot dictate the way other countries govern themselves or tell them what their minimum wages shoud be.
The only thing the US can do is make it easier for us to compete on a global scale, and I don't think this administration or the one before it have done nearly enough to make the business climate here more favorable than abroad. I would LOVE to see a one time tax 'holiday' for companies to re-patriate their assets abroad.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

Somalia has "as little federal gov't involvement as possible", which means that warlords and their small armies control certain territories and the people are about as free as fish caught in a net.
ybevar1Feb 13, 2012
@treehugger87
Once again a liberal takes something to the complete extreme. Saying Somalia is a good place to go to if you want little gov't involvement really shows you have confidence in our states to govern themselves as the constitution outlines.
The states are free to establish whatever kind of health care system, education system, welfare system etc. as they want. If the federal gov't would step away, the states would have the power to better serve the people.
Federal gov't solutions are one size fits all remedies that usually do not work.
concusionFeb 13, 2012
states rights were important back when the constitution was written because people were traveling on horses. Please explain to me why you conservatives hate the federal government but love the state government!! wooo state government!! states rights!! so a lunatic fringe states like texas and arizona can teach their children the earth was created in 7 days and bring up a legion of dumb s**ts, who just repeat what the person before them said, and never bother to think for themselves.
ybevar1Feb 13, 2012
@concusion
It is quite simple why conservatives are for states' rights.
Because Washington DC does not know what my needs are. They should be busy worrying about national security, currencies, foreign affairs etc.
This country was built on states' rights b/c every state would be different. I am better represented on a state level than I am at a federal level. My governor knows what the people in my own state want and need, the President does not.
This is a government for the people, and this rampant federal involvement does not represent the people best.
eraptorFeb 13, 2012
@ybevar1,
I'm familar with the manufacturing devastation you're describing. I experienced it through numerous family members and friends who were impacted directly when the textile industry in North Carolina collapsed.
It appears you recognize the same predatory trade practices I do. However, we differ on what has caused the problem.
Our business/economic troubles AREN'T created by high corporate taxes OR unions. Evidence of this may is found in the fact that MOST corporations don't pay statutory tax rates. They pay FAR less than stautory rates. Hell, most of them pay no federal taxes at all.
As for the impact of unions, private sector unions are a mere shadow of their former selves and haven't existed in the textile industry for DECADES. That's why the textile industry relocated from the Northeast to the South (i.e., to pay nonunion wages). You should know, CEO's always complain about unions because it's the only element of society/business capable of ensuring workers are paid and treated fairly (they have a direct conflict of interest on the subject). The significant gap in U.S. wealth disparity would NOT have been possible without devastating the union movement first. While I recognize that some unions have overstepped their bounds in the past, so TOO have executives. Take a good look at the growth of their pay packages over the past 30 years if you don't believe me. There's NO way in Hell that today's executives are worth THAT much more than the executives who founded and built most of the U.S. corporate world.
The cost advantages foreign competitors currently enjoy is DIRECTLY linked to SIGNIFICANT subsidies FROM their governments in addition to currency manipulation, lower cost of living, local ownership requirements, intellectual proiperty theft/reverse engineering and ongoing trade protections in THEIR countries.
The solution to the problems we are discussing is NOT another tax holiday/repatriation exercise. The solution lies in reforming our tax AND trade laws so companies are prohibitd from gaming countries/markets/workers against one another. It's time to restore tariffs so we can EQUALIZE market differentials and RESTORE FAIR TRADE. It's the common sense solution.
Respectfully, if we adopted the solution your CEO favors, it would only prove to be a short-term bandaid that would fix NOTHING but HIS bottom line/incentive. It would do absolutely NOTHING for the country OR you.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
ybevar1Feb 13, 2012
@eraptor
Your assertion that most corporations pay little to no income tax is correct for the largest companies out there. A company like mine which is family owned and employs under 100 people does not have that luxury. We pay the full amount (around 39%).
I can tell you that profits we make abroad would be disastrous to re-patriate.
Sometimes liberals have trouble drawing the line between massive corporations and small to medium sized businesses. It is small business that employs 70% of the nation's workforce.
corporations can handle themselves, some have acquired insane amounts of wealth. Small business however, is severely hurting in this country.
eraptorFeb 13, 2012
@ybevar1,
Here's some well written "food for thought" on the subject at hand:
WSJ article on SOE’s (Feb. 3rd, 2012)
http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052970204662204577198833989249406.html?mod=WSJ_hpp_RIGHTTopCarousel_2
NYT article on Apple’s manufacturing process:
(note: pay particular attention to the portion which discusses glass manufacturing and the Chinese government subsidies which made that Chinese plant possible).
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/46091572/ns/business-us_business/#.TxxxaRzQuEM
In addition to this material, consider the fact that China dedicates 9% of it's GDP to it's infrastructure while the U.S. dedicates less than 2%. Conservatives are determined to reduce that 2% investment even further.
Now, I don't know about you, but I recognize an economic disaster in the making. It's why I fight "tooth and nail" against the economically destructive agenda currently championed by U.S. conservatives. This country and our children/grandchildren deserve FAR more than THAT from elected officials or ANY political movement for that matter.
eraptorFeb 13, 2012
@ybevar1,
First, you need to know I'm a politically independent capitalist. When I take issue with anything, more often than not it's on solid economic/financial grounds. I've always found political ideology to be a dangerous distraction from economic common sense.
Second, small business interests in the U.S. aren't hamstrung by government, they are hamstrung by anti-competitive regulations/policies legislators insert at the behest of large corporations. Large corporations don't want small businesses to become a competitive threat and they pull out all of the stops to prevent it. If you think the U.S. Chamber of Commerce represents "your" interests in DC, I've got some (underwater) land for sale in Florida. How do I know this? I've seen how DC operates behind the "curtains of power".
Third, I seriously doubt your company's effective tax rate is 39%. For 2012, the top indivdual tax rate is 35% (for income in excess of $388,350 ONLY). The corporate tax rate varies depending upon income with the top tax rate at 35% (note: 39% ONLY applies to corporate taxable income BETWEEN $100,000 and $335,000, then drops below that rate before AND after that "cresting" point).
The rates I just quoted are STATUTORY only. EFFECTIVE tax rates are what one ACTUALLY pays after considering tax deductions, credits and beneficial tax treatment (i.e., offshoring profits). You've indicated that your "small business" employer offshores it's profits. This means it is paying a MUCH lower effective tax rate than you assume. Take it from someone who is more than a little familiar with the tax games involved.
Finally, think hard before you jump on the conservative bandwagon. Obama has done FAR more for small business interests in the U.S. than conservatives have. He has attempted to ease capital access (i.e., small business lending bill), lowered their tax burdens and eliminated regulations where it makes sense. Contrast that with Congressional Conservatives who have stonewalled every effort he's made on behalf of small business. Hmm...I wonder why? Could it be they ONLY represent the interests of MAJOR corporations? In a word...YES!!!!! Don't take my word for it, look at nonpartisan news accounts on the subject and the Congressional record of proposed legislation over the past 3 years.
OPEN your eyes and ears! Political action is ALWAYS a more accurate reflection of whether any politician represents your interests or not. Conservative media is paid to deceive and manipulate the electorate, nothing more. Rupert Murdoch has admitted as much over a "hot mic".Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

here is some truth;
Franklin Raines - was a Chairman and Chief Executive Officer at Fannie Mae. Raines was forced to retire from his position with Fannie Mae when auditing discovered severe irregularities in Fannie Mae's accounting activities. Raines left with a "golden parachute valued at $240 Million in benefits. The Government filed suit against Raines when the depth of the accounting scandal became clear.
Tim Howard - was the Chief Financial Officer of Fannie Mae. Howard "was a strong internal proponent of using accounting strategies that would ensure a "stable pattern of earnings" at Fannie. Investigations by federal regulators and the company's board of directors since concluded that management did manipulate 1998 earnings to trigger bonuses. Raines and Howard resigned under pressure in late 2004. Howard's Golden Parachute was estimated at $20 Million!
Jim Johnson - A former executive at Lehman Brothers and who was later forced from his position as Fannie Mae CEO. Investigators found that Fannie Mae had hidden a substantial amount of Johnson's 1998 compensation from the public, reporting that it was between $6 million and $7 million when it fact it was $21 million." Johnson is currently under investigation for taking illegal loans from Countrywide while serving as CEO of Fannie Mae. Johnson's Golden Parachute was estimated at $28 Million.
