The people have spoken.
And they don't want the government controlling their bodies.
Take note.
nathanloehleinNov 9, 2011
Unfortunately they are gearing up to get on the ballot next year in states like Florida (http://www.tampabay.com/news/courts/civil/florida-antiabortion-group-wants-its-own-personhood-amendment-faces-long/1200523 where it looks like they need a lot more signees). Hopefully they'll run out of money, and soon.
hecruz24Nov 9, 2011
If they can't get it passed in a very conservative, anti-abortion state like Mississippi, I doubt it'll get through in any other states.

I'm glad to see people are finally getting sick of religious extremists trying to force their politicized version of morality on people. Now hopefully, our politicians are done with election stunt distractions and can get to work doing what the people voted them there to do.

I guess even Mississippians know that this law was wrong and went too far
thepoliticalcatNov 9, 2011
Yes, yes, YES!

I'm surprised this was defeated. I'm SHOCKED it was defeated by this type of margin. Winning by 18 points when polls had it behind by 1 is a resounding statement about the overreach by the anti-science Theocrats on the far right.

I'm shocked and relieved. This was a resounding no to the nutcases who are willing to devalue a woman's life and let her DIE in the name of preserving a zygote!
sloppyjoes7Nov 9, 2011
I'm disappointed. The anti-science anti-human pro-choicers, who ignore the fact that life begins at conception, will continue to deny the right to life and exert control over the bodies of children.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

You mean the 58% of Mississippi voters. http://news.talkingpointsmemo.com/scoreboard.php

Obviously whoever conducted the polls made a little bit of an error. And thankfully they were way off.
LaurahStraightUpNov 9, 2011
Yeah the problem was the wording of the bill. It left too much room for big catastrophic error and lack of clarity. The dangers outweighed the risk for even the most staunch pro-lifers.. (who are amazingly enough mostly comprised of those who have never owned a uterus... ) or suffered a difficulty that resulted in a potential deadly outcome for themselves or their child.... Horrifying, but never in a million years did i think I'd be one of those who needed the procedure as a life saving measure.. ended up done in a hospital with constant monitoring.. It took a few months to sink in, but after the denial, years of mourning the loss plagued my entire being. Had it been illegal, the red tape and all that goes along with it would have cost me my life... and of course the 3 months developed child. It turns out these situations are not rare, in fact someone is with child and going into toxemia or any of the countless conditions that jeopardize the mother's life, as well as their child's right now...
atomheartmotherNov 9, 2011
You're living proof that this law would have horrific, unintended consequences.
spazattack5000Nov 9, 2011
Actually it's a resounding statement about how riled up this issue gets people. Maybe the population felt divided on this but those who voted were clearly on one side.
atomheartmotherNov 9, 2011
The people who put this on the ballot with no provisions for incest or rape overreached. That's an extreme position which even the very conservative state of MS couldn't sanction.
jacquelynekNov 9, 2011
Even with provisions for incest, rape, and unprotected-drunken-sex-with stupid it wouldn't have passed.
atomheartmotherNov 9, 2011
That's hard to say, but I tend to think otherwise.
Still, dugg for "unprotected-drunken-sex-with stupid".
thepoliticalcatNov 9, 2011
Yes, yes, YES!

They could have at least linked to the results so we could see the percentages, assuming such things are available so close to the close of the polls.
