It's commendable that Lady Gaga is such an advocate for gay rights and is trying to bring recognition to things such as bullying. Though I entirely disagree with her wanting laws against bullying, they already exist through harassment, assault, etc.
I hear a lot of people, especially older people going on about how bullying is part of life, people need a thicker skin, etc. Of course that is true, to an extent. But bullying in today's world is vastly different than when I was in school just 10 years ago. It isn't just in schools anymore. It's online, through your cell, it's everywhere. Even if you disconnect, it's still there. And it's rarely just one or two people picking on you anymore, it's often a mob mentality. Especially when it comes to something such as being gay.
Another issue is that parents and school officials often don't get involved in these situations. Whether the parents just aren't involved in their kids lives and listen to them, or don't teach their kids bullying is a horrible thing to do to one another. If I recall, about this case in particular, I believe the parents actually went to the school about the bullying and the school did nothing, which happens far too much. It's sad nobody learned from events such as Columbine.
As far as suicide goes, I oppose it fully. I feel there are always other options. That said, he obviously felt he only had one option left. And while I don't agree with it, it has to be a terrible feeling to be in such a dark and lonely place where you feel that's the only answer. I couldn't even begin to imagine.
sattireattireSep 26, 2011
nobody is bullied to death. they were bullied, then they took their own life. gay or straight, parents raised a weak kid. They failed to recognize and be involved in their kid's life.
You have to protect your kids and teach your kids to protect themselves. And no, i'm talking about violence. You can blame the school for not doing enough all you want, but ultimately, the parents failed to get their child out of that situation. Change schools. Yeah it's hard. Yeah it's more work. Yeah you have to make sacrifices. Then you can sue the school for whatever, but at least your child is alive.
This is an emergency to parents. They need to act like it. In an emergency, the first thing you do is call 911, then remove the victims from the hazardous environment, then you perform life saving techniques. The parents failed to remove their child from the hazardous environment. You don't perform CPR on a drowned victim while he's still in the water. You should have taken the kid out of the environment FIRST.

lady gaga should get a nobel peace prize.. seriously, this woman is trying to change something she believes in and is helping so many people cope with life through music. she is a great personComment is buried, click here to see the rest.
garryfieldsSep 26, 2011
Uhhh, a Nobel Prize? Yeah, no. I agree that she takes part in a lot of great causes and has helped people, but a Peace Prize shouldn't be given out lightly.
vizonSep 26, 2011
do you take something lightly that people are killing themselves over constantly? Is that lightly to you? Someone actually advocating to change and become a support system for something that everyone has discriminated against for decades?Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
garryfieldsSep 26, 2011
Look, I'm not saying the woman isn't doing quite a bit of good, but she's not Gandhi or Mother Teresa, either. Just because you do good in the world doesn't mean you deserve the Peace Prize. Maybe if her advocacy actually contributes significantly to the furthering of equality among people of all sexual orientations, but until then, nah.
Closed AccountSep 26, 2011
I would agree with Garryfields.. while commendable.. I don't think Lady Gaga's actions warrant a Nobel Peace prize.. All she's done is speak her mind and write a few songs. There's not a lot of self sacrifice here.. in fact, I'd argue she's profited from her actions given her large gay fan base. I'm not implying that she's doing it for money... but it's not like Mother Theresa, who essentially gave up her entire adult life to take care of the sick and poor.
vizonSep 26, 2011
wow you guys are ridiculous. all she does is write a few songs. she does make money. you are right, lets bring up some of the most significant names, but not the artist in china advocating against communism, or obama, or others. On a serious note, lets bring up someone from 79 instead of the more recent years.
She has helped so many people, and is an amazing person. Watch the video.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

Agreed.
asdafasdfafsadfafadafsasSep 26, 2011
Nobel Peace prize because one kid committed suicide and she sang a song for him?
I'm not saying it's not an honourable thing, I have gay friends and they were bullied but....they lived. I was bullied for different reasons and I lived.
There are more troubling matters in this world than emo kids and their first world problems. Only a hipster would think Lady Gaga deserves a nobel prize.
thelolfoxSep 25, 2011
That Lady Gaga and her sympathy! She's such a threat to our children. A TOOL OF SATAN

1. feverishly defend a controversial demographic
2. write song about member of said demographic taking the "drama queen" way out

Suicide is for f**king retards. Good riddance.
volaitle86Sep 26, 2011
I don't know why you were dugg down. Committing suicide shouldn't be rewarded with Lady Gaga singing a song about you. Everyone gets bullied unless you're a well off jock. Get over it. Way to pump up your publicity though Gaga.
meribianSep 27, 2011
Lady Gaga is horrible. That's EXACTLY what people who commit suicide deserve.
fluxSep 26, 2011
The teen was not bullied to death he was bullied and then committed suicide like an idiot. The kid made a stupid decision and all you bleeding heart libs are falling over your selves to feel sorry for a fool. suicide is stupid and those who choose it deserve no pityComment is buried, click here to see the rest.

I doubt the kid committed suicide *just* because he was bullied. Growing up and learning that you're gay is difficult as hell -- I wouldn't wish it on anyone, let alone a 14 year old kid. It takes a long time for most gay people to accept themselves and to learn to live with the consequences of something they never asked to be. Most people don't realize how it affects every facet of your life (usually negatively at first) -- and there's nothing you can do about it.
For the record I'm gay, and it's clearly obvious you have no idea what you're talking about.
fluxSep 26, 2011
I dont give a rats ass if your gay suicide is stupid and trying to excuse his foolishness because he had a difficult time with social issues is bulls**t liberal spinComment is buried, click here to see the rest.
chaosnovaxzSep 26, 2011
Notice how he refers to everything as "liberal" this or that. I don't want to necessarily be politically affiliated with either side, but still, leave it to an incestuous hick conservative to not even be able to spell, and yet still try to be an internet badass.
I can't imagine what this kid had to go through, but suicide was indeed his own choice. Some of these comments sound as if the posters would approve of his bullies being charged with murder, as far-fetched as it sounds.
Closed AccountSep 26, 2011
I agree.. calling it murder is going overboard.
Closed AccountSep 26, 2011
There's no liberal spin here -- unlike you, I speak from actual experience.
I'm not saying that committing suicide is a good idea... I'm just saying that calling a 14 year old kid stupid because he couldn't cope with being gay... is amazingly ignorant on your part.
Anyway, i realize that your mind is made up and that no amount of arguing will convince you otherwise .. so it's pointless continuing this debate. I'm just replying to your post to offer a counter position -- just in case anybody should read your original post and think it's informed in any kind of way.
bluto36Sep 26, 2011
um gay?
he couldn't cope with life. suicide is never a choice. never gets rationalized and never gets blamed on anyone else.
people including other gays have went through far worse then this pussy.
no time for suicide, not even a too bad. sorry it sucks but his choice...
i had eggs for breakfast, what about you?
jjbradySep 26, 2011
ALL equal rights movements are caused by the very people who want society to be exclusive. So if you don't like, gay rights, feminism or any other movement: blame yourselves for being such self righteous pricks.
It's exactly what those foolish idiot children did to that boy. They ostracized him for being different, it made them feel included, accepted and important. But they are not. They are pathetic little c*nts.
So how dare anyone blame this boy for killing himself. "He should have done this", "he should have done that"......Do you honestly believe, that after daily mental abuse for years, he had any emotional strength or self worth to follow through such suggestions? Do you think, that by the end, he actually gave a s**t about his own life? Do you think he felt he deserved to live?
Those children ARE to blame for his death. And should be made examples of.
Anyone who sympathizes with such bullying children probably feels guilty for the crap they put someone else through when they were young.
volaitle86Sep 26, 2011
I'm liberal, and I do agree with you. You are being dugg down by the gay alliance. This is a group of people that would say the kid was an idiot if he was a nerd, but since he's gay, they're all over it.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
Closed AccountSep 26, 2011
Being gay and being a nerd are hardly in the same category. Learning that you're gay means a lot more than learning you are attracted to people of the same sex. It has implications on almost every facet of your life; everything changes as a result -- the kind of relationships you have (romantic or not), the kind of jobs you have, the kind of family you have, the kinds of situations you have to face, etc. Few non-queer people actually realize how difficult this is to cope with, especially when you first realize that you're gay, which unfortunately for most is during puberty -- an already difficult time as it is.
volaitle86Sep 26, 2011
ok.....
rogue100Sep 26, 2011
No, he got dugg down because it was douchey and insensitive for him to call the kid a fool and an idiot, and saying he deserved no pity.

He wasn't bullied to death, he killed himself.
thelolfoxSep 26, 2011
Ah, good old victim blaming
richardboreanSep 26, 2011
So do you think that the kids who bullied him are guilty of murder? Because that is what saying "he was bullied to death" implies.
Yes, bullying is a problem. Yes, the kids who bullied the gay kid are ****. But NO the kid was not "bullied to death" - he was bullied, and he wasn't able to handle the pressures of growing up gay in a homophobic world (I can't even imagine what that's like - it's probably brutal), so he killed himself.
bluto36Sep 26, 2011
maybe the bullies are victims themselves of bullies and are just lashing out? how and who will we assign blame and do they have to be gay to be a victim?
this probably ends of 5 or 6 degrees later Keven bacon's fault as the first prime bully
norman619Sep 26, 2011
How is stating the truth blaming the victim? No one killed him. He CHOSE to take his own life. He made a conscious decision. This fact in no way excuses the bullies but let's get some perspective here. Teens kill themselves for all kinds of reasons all the time. Teen suicide is nothing new. Why are they treating this suicide as something special? The sad truth is that this teen, like all the others who kill themselves, didn't know how to handle the stress.
richardboreanSep 26, 2011
I really don't know why people are thumbing this sort of thing down, other than they might be overly emotional about this subject.
I agree with you completely.
garryfieldsSep 26, 2011
How about some compromise: He killed himself because he was bullied so much.
wkrausmannSep 26, 2011
No because there were other options. There are always options. He made a conscious and selfish choice. I don't think he thought once about what this would mean to his family. He took the easy way out with no consideration for anyone but himself.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
johnnysoftwareSep 26, 2011
He could have gone Columbine. Thank goodness he didn't.
I note you don't even consider those who bullied him had other choices.
wkrausmannSep 30, 2011
Yeah, they could have tied him to a fence. What's your point?
My point is that suicide is not the answer; it's the coward's way out and he'd still be alive if he was really thinking.
Closed AccountSep 26, 2011
Serious, longterm depression is a mental illness. Asking someone to be rational while in this state is asking a bit much -- especially from an immature, inexperienced 14 year old kid. In fact, many depressed people who commit suicide come to conclusion that their families would be better off without them.
norman619Sep 26, 2011
So the blame lies with the person who chose to kill themselves. Blaming the bullies is ridiculous. It's as if you are expecting the kids who were bullying him to know the signs of severe depression. Get real.
Closed AccountSep 26, 2011
When did I say I blamed the bullies for the suicide?
I think the bullies played a role in what drove the kid to commit suicide -- but certainly they aren't to blame for the suicide. They didn't force him to do anything. That being said, I'm sure that they were cognizant of the fact that they were hurting him. They should be held accountable for what they did, which was intentionally hurting a person through bullying.
Personally.. finding who to blame in situations like these is pointless. It's just tragic. Depression is a mental illness. It's easy to point the finger at the person committing suicide when you have all of your faculties at your disposition -- but the fact is, most people who commit suicide aren't being rational.
norman619Sep 26, 2011
Ah OK misunderstood you. It really irritates me when they take a single suicide because the teen was gay and use it to push some agenda. It's as if they are saying the countless other non-gay teen suicides aren't as tragic. It makes me sick.
norman619Sep 26, 2011
No he killed himself because he didn't know how else to deal with the bullies. Millions of kids deal with bullies everyday. Most of them don't see ending their existence as a viable solution. People refuse to see the glaringly obvious here. The fact that he chose to kill himself over this tells you there was something very wrong with him mentally. He needed help to learn how to cope. Dealing with bullies is a part of growing up.
bluto36Sep 26, 2011
this 100%
if we dont realize this then soon Teen killed self due to s**tty lunch date.
then teen killed self due to bad sandwich
dealing with bullies = part of life deal with it

to take it any further than that you need to start changing laws and making others responsible for your actions and feelings.
sorry that is not how it works.
