If the extra support for the 9/11 responders is so important why did the Democrats wait until a lame duck session to try and pass it? They've had TWO YEARS to try and pass this thing.
Make no mistake about it, its not the Republicans trying to exploit 9/11, its the Democrats (in this case anyway.)
The Republicans vowed to block all legislation until the Democrats decided to figure out which tax proposal to vote on so families and business could plan accordingly. Again, Democrats had two years to get the tax rates figured out. But instead they concoct some 9/11 thing to push their agenda.
Yet, all you idiots want to believe Stewart. Typical.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

"The Republicans vowed to block all legislation until the Democrats decided to figure out which tax proposal to vote on so families and business could plan accordingly."
As opposed to the blocking all legislation just to be dicks that they've been doing for the two years previous.
But congratulations on regurgitating the new talking point they've got their tools spouting on every thing they block now as part of their continued avoidance of responsibility. Is there a piece of legislation we HAVEN'T heard "they Dems had two years, why are they doing it now" about yet? Nope, didn't think so.
charlotte_webDec 15, 2010
Very predictable, considering that the GOP had already vowed to filibuster all bills until the Bush tax cut extension was passed. It provides an opportunity for the Dems to do some showboating with bills like these.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

Fine, he's not a "news source" however, he brings light to current news stories and finds both parties spewing crap just to make them look busy.

Could you please provide an example of the Democratic Party voting against health care funding for 9/11 first responders? News story, bill name and/or number, etc. This is not snark. I'm honestly interestd in seeing the basis of your claim.

"basically no different"
Well accept for continued benefits for the long term unemployed, gay rights including DADT, Abortion rights, Tax cuts for the rich at the expense of everyone else, support for environmental initiatives, workers rights, hostility towards unions and unionization, insuring that all Americans have access to medical treatment, allowing a path to citizenship for illegals with something to contribute, christian fundamentalism and many many more...
Yep exactly the same.

He doesn't need to be "a real NEWS SOURCE" to have a valid point on this. Also, its irrelevant that both parties do this. Its the Republicans who enact idiotic policies in the name of 9/11 & anti-terrorism, then turn around and vote to give first responders the shaft. If the Democrats were as loud or adamant about respecting those who sacrificed something on 9/11, they'd be the ones catching the heat.
alienkidDec 15, 2010

brian1625Dec 15, 2010
In a sense he's a news source. A meta news source in a way. The "news" is based on the media's portrayal of public figures. He's said it himself, his material doesn't come from the news, it's comes from the theater of media.
davidtcDec 14, 2010
It's too bad this stuff isn't shown all over to force these people to account for their actions. The GOP isn't scared of clips like this cause it is never seen. They probably watch The Daily Show at home to laugh at all the stuff Jon Stewart points out about them, but they aren't laughing like everyone else cause of how stupid they look, they are laughing cause they know they can do s**t like this and have it go unnoticed by the masses.
neondistractionDec 15, 2010
And then they watch the Colbert Report and cheer at the television because they don't get that it's satire.
quillrootsDec 15, 2010
I don't agree with Republicans exploiting 9/11 to make themselves look like a hero, but I wouldn't have passed the bill either.
It was I think like 7 Billion dollars. I mean cmon... why so much? How many first responders could there have been?? Lets assume 5,000 (which is probably an over estimate.) There are probably like 1,000 people that actually risked their lives and deserve the money. Which means you would be giving each person 7 million dollars.
I'm all for giving them money, and I appreciate what they did, but lets bring it down to like 100 million. The only reason they vote against it is because of how much money it is. I mean Mark Zuckerburg isn't even worth 7 billion. Also, lets not forget the hundreds of thousands of Police officers that risk their lives everyday. We could give every police officer in the entire U.S. 10 grand for that much money. Or you could set up a fund for schools that give bonuses to teachers when their students do above average.
The first responders were protecting our nation. We should spend our money keeping this nation great, otherwise it wouldn't be worth risking your life for.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
davidtcDec 15, 2010
7.4 billion over 10 years. 740 million a year.
Now this is the funny part. You are complaining about the cost of healthcare. If there was already a universal healthcare, the cost would be a lot cheaper.
Closed AccountDec 15, 2010
Why so much? BECAUSE THEY ARE AMERICAN HEROS WHO ARE DYING PAINFUL DEATHS! Seriously, wtf is wrong with you?
You think 5000 people? You think only 1000 "deserve" money? You think $100 million will cover all of them? Where to start?
According to Wikipedia, "According to the New York State Health Department, 836 responders, including firefighters and police personnel, have died as of June 2009." So I guess that would be your 1000 people who deserve the money. And we could really cut the funding for the bill because by your estimates, 1/5 of the responders are dead.
I hope the word "deserve" was a poor selection on your part. Who deserves the money? All of them! Every person who climbed into the rubble, pulled out people and corpses, breathed in toxic dust deserve that money.
The next point to bring up is if you actually watched the clip, Stewart pointed out that Mike Enzi's problem was the last bill lost $475 million. Yeah, clumsy of them, but this bill was going to fix the loopholes. While we're on the topic, Stewart pointed out in 2008 the Pentagon admitted it lost $15 billion.
You, much like the GOP who didn't even bother standing up and explaining why they didn't support the bill, disgust me. Comparing money that could have and would have been spent to extend and improve the lives of american heroes to a single person's net worth..... Actually, I think I've said enough.
quillrootsDec 15, 2010
No need to raise your voice, just talking here.
The wiki you quoted doesn't exaclty support your point. It says that there were only 2752 victims in the attacks. Which means my estimates are fairly close.
I'm not defending what the GOP does. They do a lot of hypocritical things that I don't agree with. All I'm saying is based on a purely monetary view point it is hard for me to justify giving a few thousand people that much money, when that amount of money could be used to help a million.
7.4 billion dollars is a ridiculous amount of money. A billion dollars gets watered down because we here it so much in the news nowadays. 800 billion bailout, trillions of dollars of debt. It seems like a few billion is just another drop in the bucket.
I can't figure out why it would cost more than a hundred million at most to cover the medical damages. It seems like 1 billion would be more than enough for medical damages and additional compensation. It's 9 years later, you would think there wouldn't be that many people still physically suffering from 9/11, at least not 7.4 billion dollars worth.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
Closed AccountDec 16, 2010
You insult me with your stupidity and more importantly you insult our heroes with your lack of sympathy and compassion.
My citation supports my point just fine. Yes, there were 2752 victims. Victims are not responders. Responders are the police, firefighters, and paramedics that helped our victims. These people are/where the closest thing we will ever see to real life comic-book hero-esque bravery in our lifetime. They gave so much. But you don't think we can afford to pick up their hospital tab?
This amount of money would have covered their medical bills for the next ten years. Do you know how hard it is to get a good health care plan after a pre-existing condition? Do you know how much MRIs, CTs, PET scans, and X-rays cost? Then there's the cost of medicines, procedures, and surgeries. It's a lot of money.
But you're right. This is a purely fiscal issue and the bottom line is we can't afford it. But we can afford tax cuts for the wealthiest 2% of Americans so they can avoid a 3% tax hike. Merry Christmas Mr. Zadroga.
quillrootsDec 16, 2010
What I wanna know is how many people it would be covering? How many of those people are sick from a 9/11 related injury? What are the severity of those injuries? And finally, how much will it cost to treat those injuries?
To me it seems somewhat foolish to propose an amount of money without answers to those questions. You could look at it both ways. What if 7.4 billion wasn't enough money?? Doesn't it make sense to figure out how much money they need before giving them money?
Your argument can be summed up as "The money is going to heroes! And if you don't support giving them 7.4 billion then you don't support them!" But that's not it at all, I'm not questioning their heroicness (if that's even a word), to me they are heroes, that's obvious.
Think of it this way. I'd like an answer to this too. At what amount of money does it become to much to give them. I mean hell, why not give them 100 billion? I mean they're heroes after all, they deserve it.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
mikelistDec 15, 2010
let's give medical aid only to those who actually risked their lives, because the rest were in reality, cowards that hid behind their dead comrades. /s
everyone who responded to the wtc call risked their lives by showing up. differentiating between those who risked the most and those who only had to breathe the toxic dust while they did what they were assigned to do,
is disingenuous, maybe we shouldn't pay soldiers unless they are in combat.
