He was the university president when I was at Texas A&M University. We here can't tolerate people of foul or bad character, nor do we tolerate celebrated liars. He was loved by most of the student body, and I remember him as a decent university president. I've personally seen 3 president here at the university, and he was one of the better ones, though I don't have much feeling towards him either way.
Personally, as someone who takes the code of honor seriously, I understand the need for a former CIA head and DOD head to lie to keep some secrets safe. I don't view him as a figure head of our university despite his presidency here because I only count people who have walked the walk of the students, graduated, and achieve position through hard work.
Smearing him was a bit much.

Wow a long read with no hard evidence, and a lot of speculation. I will say Robert Gates has a done a good job as the current Secretary of Defense, and is a million times better than Rumsfeld. He cut programs such as the F-22 and the Army's FCS., while taking swift action to make right the situation at Walter Reed and working with General Petraus to improve the security situation in Iraq.
