In an interview on 60 Minutes, he stated he came up with his pledge at the age of 12.
http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-18560_162-57327816/the-pledge-grover-norquists-hold-on-the-gop/?pageNum=2
Norquist proves every day he still has the maturity and thinking of a spoiled 12 yr old.
But that makes him a bit more mature than many of his GOP counterparts.
publiclurkerFeb 13, 2012
sounds like a rather slow 12 year old. My kids grew out of this level of self-serving entitlement by the age of nine or ten.
u2canfailFeb 12, 2012
Norquist, the man who states his goal is a return to 1900 America. Why is someone so backwards thinking speaking anywhere?
johnnysoftwareFeb 12, 2012
Because they didn't have a treatment for syphilis in 1900.
miklkitFeb 12, 2012
Why would anyone want that? In 1910 the average life expectancy was 48 years, children worked in mines and factories, some of which had locked doors to prevent employees from taking a break, and the Wall Street tycoons were having "panics" every few years because of no regulations of their pure capitalism.
FrankLuskaFeb 12, 2012
Yes, miklkit, johnny, u2, why would anyone want 93% more purchasing power, you know, the amount we have lost to inflation. Thanks to government and the FED Reserve.
Sounds so horrible to have sound money, doesn't it.
Sounds so horrible not to be defending the rest of the world at our expense, doesn't it.
Sounds so horrible to promote slave labor at the expense of jobs here, doesn't it.
"and the Wall Street tycoons were having "panics" every few years"
Nice to see your supporting the wealth of wall street by corrupt politicians who are under the wealthy's thumb. Yes, back then you may have had regulations that stabilized and helped the 99%, but why did all that change in the last 50 years? Very simple answer, Republicans and Democrats.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

Frank do you know when the Great Depression was, look it up, then look up the cause. No fed then either. I do feel bad for you.
FrankLuskaFeb 12, 2012
Do I know why the great depression happened, why yes i do. But are you guy's saying Grover, yes he is an idiot, want's the great depression back? or that any republican want's that, hard to believe. And since this was not specifically stated by him, and other things were, your just putting words into his mouth.
Believe me when i say, i don't like or condone what any party has done over the last 100 years, with a few exceptions on regulation.
You guys make it sound like American's are too stupid to take care of themselves, and need government to do that for them. If that's the case, i feel sorry for them and you.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

Frank, a challenge. Choose any game, checkers to football. Eliminate all the rules (regulations). Now choose 3 friends and play the game.
Report back here. I will wait.
/////
There is no game at all without rules, just chaos.
FrankLuskaFeb 13, 2012
Hey, i think certain regulations are needed, but when the government does regulation at 2 to 1 on citizens vs corporations, where they belong, something is wrong with that. Passed regulation which allowed limiting Forex trading to 50 to 1, and outlawed offshore accounts. Great for corporations, bad for people, why is it the governments job to protect us from ourselves.
I am all for good and common sense regulation, whats next, you have to be rich to buy stock? while legalizing online gambling as B Frank wants to do. Makes no sense.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

I damn sure want a stronger dollar, on my messily retirement income, i could use all i can get. People will just not recognize how much value the dollar has really lost, but boy they will sure care as time goes on, What! iPad $1200.00. gas $12.00 a gallon, hamburger $10.00.
Get ready kiddies, as history shows, it will be coming your way if you don't do something about it.
u2canfailFeb 13, 2012
I did not say Grover wanted the depression back. He stated in an interview he wanted the 1900's back. I simply attribute his own words to him.
FrankLuskaFeb 13, 2012
We all know what assuming gets us both, maybe he is stupid enough to want another great depression, i mean, i wouldn't put it pass some people, but if he does not say that, i would expect he does mean that. But of course that's me doing the assuming.
Their is no doubt that we need to do something in this country besides making our dollar worthless, if he really wants less regulation and can't get it, the only proper thing to do would force other countries to play by the same rules, we won't buy this product because it is unfair to our businesses due to the regulations we have.
I love fairness, but politicians don't. They pass trade agreements and give Most Favored Trade status to China, a 2% tariff on their exports, while we have a 25% minimum tariff on everything we export to them.
Where is the fairness, the left complain all the time about the rich, but continue to make deals like this, that only hurt the 99% of this country. They continue to put us deeper and deeper in debt, which is fine by me, i am old enough that i probably won't be around when the children of this country are wondering why their tax rates are 80% to pay off the debt of previous generations.
I asked someone the other day to show me 1 person who lost their job due to a free trade agreement, made the same or more money and had the same benefits, and i would show him 100 or 1000 that didn't.
The left keep portraying this "I am good and will take care of you" image, when it is clear they won't, and we know for sure the Right Wingers won't.
The lesser of two evils is still evil, no matter how they look on the surface.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

I do agree on many items, but I see the problem as MONEY IN POLITICS. You and I do not hold power, as citizens. We are given items in return for votes. But it is secondary to what Big Money buys.
The next election is going to be costly, our Reps start office with fundraising in mind, not voters.
The start of a solution, is election reform. Doing away with the power = money.

Not taxing and spending our way into oblivion is backwards thinking?
Yes! Yes! Let's march bravely and brilliantly into a future of poverty and squalor. We have nothing to lose but the future so let's tax and spend until there's nothing left to tax and no money to spend. It'll be great!
Oh, and I loved the characterization of "competing parasites". Nice and punchy and close enough to the truth to make the irresponsibility of the left nice and clear.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

Poverty and squalor - exactly what the Republicans promise us. The real food stamp presidents are Dos Los Bushes. Every Time Republicans are in charge the economy takes a nosedive. They thrive on it. It's what they want. They PREFER a dead economy, rising prices, and desperation - they believe they do better under such circumstances (they don't), and their basic negativity just cannot function when there is a robust economy and plenty to go around. They don't want plenty to go around. They want it all, and for most of us to be dirt-poor workers they can throw bones to. The entire Conservative philosophy is based on hardship for the majority, coming from deep seated fear and insecurity.
ChuppacabraFeb 13, 2012

Jimmy Carter - Ronald Reagan
Bush (crash) - Obama (Wipe Out)
dabble53Feb 13, 2012
Actually, the republicans DO usually do better with a failed/failing economy. We're talking the real money people here, not the "wannabees". With a down economy, they are free to lower wages and the standard of living for the masses. This is EXACTLY what they want. If they thought they could get away with it, they'd bring back debtor prisons.
eraptorFeb 12, 2012
@arpad,
Your "tax and spend" mantra is as backwartd thinking as it gets. This country has NEVER recovered using the "low tax/austerity" agenda you're preaching. That's a FACT, Jack.
Since it's lost on you poverty and squalor are PRECISELY what the COnservative agenda has been producing ever since Ronald Reagan introduced it. LOOK AT YOUR COUNTRY'S PRESENT ECONOMIC CIRCUMSTANCES!!!! Instead of recognizing the smoldering wreckage Dubya and his band of conservative morons left behind, you blame the responsible group (i.e., Democrat's) attempting to salvage what's left of our economy.
Grover Norquist is an unelected "ideologue" who should be thrown in jail for the extortion he routinely practices in DC.
ChuppacabraFeb 13, 2012
"Your "tax and spend" mantra is as backwartd thinking as it gets. This country has NEVER recovered using the "low tax/austerity" agenda you're preaching. That's a FACT, Jack."
Incorrect.
I lived during Jimmy Carter's gas lines. I watched him dismantle our military. I bought a car and paid 12% interest on the loan. I was around when the interest on your credit card was 22%. All under Democrats.

eraptorFeb 13, 2012
I was alive during that time too. Funny how you left out key details. Here's what you missed:
1) Most of the economic conditions which existed during the Carter Administration were legacies left behind by the Nixon/Ford disgrace. Don't forget it was Nixon who abandoned the gold standard at Milton Friedman's behest, introducing fiat money AND inflation.
2) Those long gas lines were the result of OPEC's oil embargo, not Carter's economic policies alone. OPEC nation's were PISSED that the U.S. (under NIXON) had taken steps to DEVALUE the dollar which served as the global currency, thereby harming their purchasing power from oil sales.
3) Ronald Reagan gets FAR more credit than he deserves. AS evidence, Nicaragua STILL fell to the Communists even AFTER the Iran-Contra scandal. Reagan's misguided/clumsy efforts in Latin America and the U.S. made things significantly WORSE as did his moronic illegal immigration amnesty.
As someone more than a little familiar with Central/South American politics, I can assure you that Chavez would have NEVER risen to power if his country's conservatives hadn't overplayed their hand in the country. U.S. conservatives have made the SAME mistake in this country but you're not smart enough to see it. Instead of learning from past mistakes, conservatives "double down" on their stupidity.
ChuppacabraFeb 14, 2012
1) And don't you forget the Vietnam war - started, escalated, and lost under the Democrats who created the economic condition.
2) OPEC has always, and forever will be - concerned only with their bottom line, and using the only true ace in the hole they have to exercise control over the West. If they were concerned about devaluing the dollar back then - they should be flipping out in their turbans over what Obama has done to the value of the dollar today.
3) You mean after the Democrat Congress failed to allow him to do the right thing? Oh, and lets make sure we completely ignore how he crushed the Soviet Union after the Democrats spent 45 years wringing their hands and doing nothing but develop the MAD doctrine. Wanna talk about the nuclear war raid drills we used to practice when we were kids in school? Kids today have no clue what that is - thanks to Ronald Wilson Reagan. And you Democrats make me sick wanting to credit Gorbachev for this.
You don't need to worry about Conservatives. You better worry about the Independents who received a nice big 4 year mouthful of hot turd sandwich compliments of the Democrat Party and Progressive Liberalism. You might have stood a chance if your Party was actually run by Kennedy Democrats still. But you're not. You're run by a bunch of America haters who want nothing more than turn us into a society of weak minded lemmings all dependent on the Governement for everything from providing us abortion services, to child care, to "free" health care, to "free" school, to "free" food, to "free" mortgages, and on and on - all in the hope that our Socialist Educators can make sure no one is smart enough to understand nothing in this world is free.
u2canfailFeb 13, 2012
Did you even notice the top percentage of his income, Romney pays in income tax? I pay more, because I work for a salary.
The disparity is there. But it is in the favored status that comes from buying government and law. So that the few push all responsibility on the many, while keeping wages down.
We saw prime evidence of this, when in a recession, and cuts are a top priority, the business with the highest income through the entire recession, BIG OIL, got a gift of a tax subsidy?

FrankLuskaFeb 13, 2012

The rest of your comment is spot on correct. And most businesses have expressed they don't need tax cuts, that they will not help. They have also expressed they are not hiring because of low product / service demand.
Solution: Lower taxes on the real people of this economy, the 99%. To help them pay off their enormous debts, maybe start saving money, and give them money to purchase "Made in the USA products", to give your friends, family and neighbors much needed jobs.
u2, i am agreeing with you on subsidies, stop them for everything, but you know exactly what will happen, people will bitch and moan that gas, food, utilities, etc cost to much, they don't understand the only reason they pay the prices they do now is because of subsidies.
Now if we can just get a party together that cares about the people............

I don't understand the pitch? Sure we all want lower taxes, heck, if the world worked like it did in many conservatives or libertarians heads there'd be practically no need for government at all and most of us would be all for it...but alas, that's the problem, you can't take an ideology that's only ever been proven in your head and force it on reality and expect reality to just fall in line....imagine if science worked the same? I don't care what Einstein says, Newton was right...meanwhile the GPS satellites accuracy keeps getting worse and worse....goddam liberal satellites.

u2canfailFeb 12, 2012

brucealmightyFeb 12, 2012
At least partly it's because he twisted so many GOP arms into signing his "NO New Taxes" pledge" when that was considered a virtual prerequisite to running for office (or re-election). That gives him a certain leverage over anyone who may have come to their senses since then and now understands than any such rigid policy barring any negotiations or compromises does more harm than good.
bluenose2Feb 12, 2012
I knew most polititions were panderers , but I really didn't think they were that stupid.
" Sure , handcuff me so I can do the peoples business."
brucealmightyFeb 13, 2012
It became a peer pressure thing. "Everyone is doing it, so why aren't you on board with the rest of us?" It was also a deal with the Devil, i.e. the only way to make a difference is to first get elected and the only way to get elected is to get the support of your Party and that requires taking the pledge to prove your trustworthy intentions.
I liken it to joining the Girl Scouts and taking a pledge to remain a virgin until marriage....it seems simple enough when you're young and dumb but pretty soon you realize you're still getting screwed....you're just missing out on all the more gratifying parts of the process....

IF the democrats have an ounce of guile in them (im not holding my breath either) they (the President) will push a comprehensive immigration bill this spring/summer. It will highlight the qualities I mentioned above about the republicans and get Obama's diverse coalition to the polls. We may yet see another 330 point plus electoral college victory.
