It was downright hilarious after he made a couple comments and then paused, waiting for a round of applause from the audience. Instead, the sound of silence and an awkward look on his face. Priceless.

It's pretty obvious that he is hoping that the reaction of the audience will validate whatever he says in the minds of home viewers. He is trying to cash in on a mob mentality. It is a purely tactical maneuver, based on the idea that he can work a crowd better than his opponents.
anomaly100Jan 25, 2012
In fairness, I think the audience should be able to react. If not, we never would have heard Republicans booing a gay military man.
upnorthgirlJan 25, 2012
As a bumper sticker I've seen says "If we don't protect freedom of speech, how will we know who the assh**es are"
anomaly100Jan 25, 2012
There ya' go!
FrankLuskaJan 25, 2012
Or the Golden Rule.
norman619Jan 25, 2012
He who has the gold makes the rules?
drich255Jan 25, 2012
The Golden Rule is a terrible policy for foreign policy.
cosmicsurferJan 25, 2012
I understand the point about wanting to cut the audience reaction
1. To save time between questions and to keep the candidates on track
2. To keep the candidates from playing for effect and keep them dealing with each other.
I agree that the audience response shows the issues as they relate to attitude of supporters towards LGBT, DADT, Defense, Budget but the debate becomes a circus atmosphere and not informational (but the circus is more fun with the laugh track adding to my giggles, I have to admit)
anomaly100Jan 25, 2012
B..b...but I'm enjoying the circus!
norman619Jan 25, 2012
Is it OK to feed the animals?
anomaly100Jan 26, 2012
I wouldn't if I were you. Politicians are known predators.
eraptorJan 25, 2012
I'm with you. We also wouldn't be able to witness Newt's ego inflate itself on national television. It's like watching a small toad grow to the size of Jabba the Hutt. Newt's even got Jabba's expression down cold.
I'm half-expecting someone to launch a frog in his mouth or to see a woman chained to him for personal amusement at every political rally. Given Newt's history, it's not as far-fetched as it may seem.
norman619Jan 25, 2012
If I remember right it was like 2 or 3 people. The vast majority were quiet. I remember expecting some insanity on the video and being disappointed to find it really wasn't much of anything.
brucealmightyJan 26, 2012
In all fairness, I think that Romney should also be able to hear his supporters snore....
ChuppacabraJan 26, 2012
So if you are gay and served in the military, everyone needs to stand up and cheer for whatever you have to say.
Dissention and disagreement will not be tolerated.
Is that pretty much it?
FrankLuskaJan 25, 2012
Newt wants / needs to hear the ones he paid do their job, no use in paying for silence.
gkiltzJan 26, 2012
Meow!!
ChuppacabraJan 26, 2012
Really enjoyed logging on here and reading all the poignant, clear, debate points devoid of any childishness.
As always, thanks for not disappointing me, (In)DiggNation!
eferguson739Jan 26, 2012
Perhaps he misspoke? I'm sure he meant to say snore.
garrywJan 25, 2012
He also demands golf claps from his staffers whenever he speaks.
johnnysoftwareJan 25, 2012
I wonder how long it will be before some demagogue's promoters introduce a roar/applause track into public speeches. Has it happened yet?
vanzant38Jan 26, 2012
He should pay his supporters more.
Seriously, how did he win SC when he was canceling events because no one was showing up.
