All the interviews I've seen from the Occupy Wall Street protestors with reporters have been clear, informative, and respectful. So, I don't know where people are getting the "dirty hippie" crap.
Also, those being interviewed were from diverse backgrounds and ages which should be apparent to anyone that this is NOT a right wing or left wing problem. This is everybody's problem.
The American tax payers bailed out Wall St. and the banks, and they deserve to be compensated for the financial fiasco Wall St. and the banks created.
anomaly100Oct 8, 2011Submitter
They're cherry picking what they *want* to see, thus propagating the same old partisan hackery that's so Fox News-like. Rush Limbaugh said Obama is starting riots. His fans will see what they were told to see. This is why I don't listen to propaganda media.
clitniblr036Oct 8, 2011
You mean like how Faux News distorts events by showing video footage of a different protest rally to inflate the numbers of supporters for Glen Beck's rally?
Or how they conveniently change (R) for Republicans to (D) for Democrats or vice versa for certain politicians being interviewed that they want to cast in a certain light?
Or how they championed the Tea Baggers but now ridicule the Occupy Wall Street crowd?
anomaly100Oct 8, 2011Submitter
Yes, eggzactly like that! 'Fair and balanced.' Damn if they don't keep redefining words....

I think people were adding "blow up palm trees" to some protests, because of a recent video clip of "out of control protestors" in a northern state that showed Palm Trees in the background.
LOL.
Seriously -- we are being attacked by a bunch of fifth columnists at Fox News but they are barely competent to hold a job beyond merely being treacherous snakes.

all the networks have been shown to do that, not that i am saying it makes it ok for fox, but if you are going to blame them, you should point out that msnbc and cnn have both mislabeled representitives, and both have used larger or smaller crowds with different events.
as for OWS, I was down there the other day, and its the same as any protest for the most part, there are the professional protesters, now the unions are there, there are the troublemakers, there are the dirty people s**tting on cop cars, and than there are genuine people who are really pissed off. I would say that this protest is clearly lacking direction, the media is trying to sway the direction as well are the unions, everyone wants something different the only thing they really agree on is they are pissed off.

"So, I don't know where people are getting the "dirty hippie" crap."
That's just what conservatives do - they just pull out the same tired talking points and ad hominem attacks to reuse over and over again. This is why they still think "hippies" is biting social commentary about 40 years after the rest of the world moved on. Because ALL protestors are by default "hippies" (unless, of course, they're the Tea Party, in which case they're heroes and patriots).
miklkitOct 8, 2011
I don't mind those neanderthals calling us hippies. Back in the 1960s we hippies toppled a sitting president and stopped a war based on lies.
We were hip, modern, progressive thinking people looking for a better way of doing things. We were pushing the envelope and getting things done.
What are these modern hippies doing differently?

In other words, just like Tea Party members. The Tea Party and the Occupy people have so much in common, if only they would realize this and form an alliance... if you have been to both, it's basically the same kinds of people coming from different sides of the fence. Don't like it when a false accusation is made to to cover a large group of people when only a few ruin it, eh? Well, you deserve it. The left wing has been doing that to the tea party for years now.
vitriolandangstOct 8, 2011
It's at least better than the eventual "terrorist" slur.
What did we expect? That after spending decades dismissing anyone trying to have Corporations be accountable and trying to keep capitalism from killing us, that the shills and the Archie Bunkers out there were just going to see reason?
And what is wrong with "Dirty Hippies" anyway? Did the Vietnam war not waste a lot of human life for war profits like Afghanistan and Iraq -- and was it NOT the public pressure of the hippies that helped to end that war -- or did we enter another Universe where these are suddenly GOOD things?
bdbrOct 8, 2011
Yeah, I keep waiting for the "terrorist" slur. I expect it will happen when the group starts making demands for politicians. So far, they're just yelling at banks and the banks don't have any reason to care. When they start going after the politicians - the ones who actually must answer to the people, that's when the rhetoric will get really nasty.
partrowOct 8, 2011

austinjameshereOct 8, 2011

peppermintpigOct 8, 2011
Three of you disagree, so tell me what the common goals of the protesters supposedly are?
macparrotOct 8, 2011
They can't tell you that because they don't know. This is more about being angry (and for many reasons rightfully so) than a legitimate protest with anything resembling clear goals. And unfortunately it's why it will ultimately fail. Sooner or later, many of these people will tire of just protesting and go home.
Anomaly, instead of trying to show what a diverse group this is (because honestly that hardly matters) you should be trying to find out what the goals of these people are if any. Otherwise this is just like firecrackers, a lot of fast noise with a brief potential for destruction and then all that's left is burnt smelly paperComment is buried, click here to see the rest.

Yes, according to your layman opinion of political movements this will amount to nothing. Never mind the fact it's already more popular than the tea party, and is currently involved in almost 900 cities in the US. They don't need a simplistic message for layman like you to understand them.
"Anomaly, instead of trying to show what a diverse group this is (because honestly that hardly matters) you should be trying to find out what the goals of these people are if any. "
Oh, it does matter. More asking of goals? Why don't you wait until the movement finishes growing, because it's still got a lot of it to do. Be patient, or not, not like anyone worth their salt cares about this retarded talking point.
"Otherwise this is just like firecrackers, a lot of fast noise with a brief potential for destruction and then all that's left is burnt smelly paper"
Wasn't the same thing said about the tea party? Oh, that's right, it was. Guess what, this movement is even larger, and TRUE libertarians support most of this movement as well.
peppermintpigOct 8, 2011
Fishenator's comment reconstructed so that the "layman" can understand it's complexity.
"Yes, according to your layman opinion of political movements this will amount to nothing. Never mind the fact it's already more popular than the tea party, and is currently involved in almost 900 cities in the US. They don't need a simplistic message for layman like you to understand them."
If you're just starting out on digg, notice that it's often typical form to begin your responses by belittling the person you are responding to, or alluding to your intellectual superiority. It also helps to claim that the person you're responding to is an imbecile incapable of grasping the issue at hand.
"Oh, it does matter. More asking of goals? Why don't you wait until the movement finishes growing, because it's still got a lot of it to do. Be patient, or not, not like anyone worth their salt cares about this retarded talking point."
You can also cite and set abstract goalposts to refute any sort of criticism. Be sure, once again, to attack the person you're responding to. Accusing them of repeating talking points is only one of several options available to you, but try to use a reliable deflection tactic.
"Wasn't the same thing said about the tea party? Oh, that's right, it was. Guess what, this movement is even larger, and TRUE libertarians support most of this movement as well."
Lastly, feel free to make assumptions about the person you are responding to. In fact, make assumptions about anyone, particularly groups. The bigger the better since populism gives you an air of authority via majority. Now you're on the way to dominating over any sort of discussion regardless of logic or evidence!Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

1. layman is a statement of fact not an insult.
2. His point is nothing more than a superficial criticism of a movement he doesn't like because they don't have a single ideology or goal. He's the one suggesting there is a goal post before the team is fully assembled, largely because he's a layman.
3. In a democracy the largest voice usually wins. He's defended the tea party, which is ironic because the left threw some of the same stupid talking points at them when they started.
4. The only person here deflecting anything is you, as your post is nothing more than your opinion that you don't like the way I present my argumet, yet lacks any real refutation of my points.

Do you know why the protests against the Vietnam war worked? Because they had a common goal as compared to just being noisy kids.
Yes they do need a message other than just anger because anger by itselt cannot be sustained. You want to tear down the status quo without having anything to replace it. That's anarchy and is essentially more destructive than the process you want to stop.
You talk about growth. yes this has some legs but eventually something of substance needs to be there to contunue it's momentum.
Oh and where exactly did I defend the Tea Party? They fell apart (which is happening right now) because no one could clearly say what it was they wanted as a group. Screw the Tea Party and screw this movement until they have something real to say.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

Actually, the Vietnam War protests worked more effectively after the middle class got involved do to the rising military death toll. Before that, they were just "dirty stinky college pot smokers". It was an 8-10 year protest. Today, the middle class has greatly been eroded. You have some there, but most are hanging around outside the mix to make sure it does not fizzle out. It does not look like it will end soon. So expect it to be come far more diverse in age and culture and voting power.
Brief history lesson. The phrase "Liberal Media" was coined by (So.Democrat/Dixiecrat turned Independent) Alabama Governor George Wallace when he was running for president. At the time he meant liberal as a quantity. He felt "too much" coverage of the war was changing American views against the it. Walter Cronkite and Dan Rather were in the fields, very often showing the casualties and talking to disheartened soldiers. He wanted less coverage of the war and more positive spin on minor victories and more negative spin protests. Often leading to protesters as Commies, Anti-American, Bums, Anarchists... you get the message. It still persists today. Bush refused news to cover funerals, coffins and limited views of injuries, collateral damage and civilian casualties.
skywiseOct 9, 2011
Red herring.
dkonigsbachOct 9, 2011
equinox2o12's history is right as far as it goes, but the phrase "Liberal Media" got an even bigger boost when it became a constant talking point of Spiro Agnew. Agnew, and eventually the rest of the Nixon administration (as things grew worse for them) used it to deflect facts that were being reported and that didn't support their positions. This manipulation of cognitive dissonance blossomed into today's right-wing media.
(My apologies in advance to anyone who can point to earlier foundations.)

End of corruption of wall street and a end to political greed, and spending for jobs.
peppermintpigOct 8, 2011
But that isn't true. Not all protesters want the government to give them something. Government spending money to create jobs is economically unsustainable and has a negative effect on the debt.
You believe a protest will do that? If the politicians are greedy, what makes you think a protest will deter them? If these people represent the interests of 99% percent of all people, then protesting is unnecessary. A good response is putting solutions into action and bypassing the banking cartels, corporatists and politicians.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

•>Government spending money to create jobs is
•>economically unsustainable and has a negative effect on
•>the debt.
your statement isn't supported by the facts but you say it... condescendingly... like it was. as if it was obvious.
what about spending on jobs to end the great depression? what about spending on wwII? those both were government spending.
what about the effort and investment to get to the moon. the technology developed and the jobs created are still around and only now starting to get stale. going to the moon didn't even directly effect people's lives. it was the greatest producer of wealth in history.
if we did the same thing... make a government investment... in alternative energy technology we would directly effect the cost of energy, the supply of energy, pollution that is likely effecting the earth, create jobs and business... leading directly to increased revenue for government... decreasing both deficit and debt. done deal. not a doubt in the world this would be the result.
please don't point out how government giving solyndra money was a waste. what you see there is business in the business of getting loans. not producing products. we need a federal agency like nasa to keep private industry focused on producing technology. left to their own devices... private industry will always find its way to the least common denominator. "just get the money and run."

Let's remember one of the greatest Internet hoaxes about a time traveler named John Titor.
He said that riots would begin in October of 2011.
He also said that this would turn out to be a Communist revolution.
That 22,000 of you who still support Capitalism as it is practiced today, will die as the U.S. secedes into 5 territories.
It is going to take a long time for us to ditch Communism for a more rational Social workfare state as enjoyed by Germany and Japan.
We don't have to let this fictional future happen.
We can go to a Socialist workfare state now.
Hire everyone who wants a job.
If they do a poor job, demote them to less desirable jobs.
Give them hourly pay that helps them to meet the cost of living.
Throw out the lobbyists.
Raise tariffs.
Do this now. It is past too late.

Maybe in the next 30 years it can all be fixed. It requires something like this as a turning point to get the people see the truth. The truth will get out eventually. The cons can only keep the lie going so long until it is obvious that they are lying their asses off. This is what happens when the people who are not stupid or vested get mad enough about the lying.

No, the media will ALWAYS find someone stealing a TV or a person wearing a ballerina costume.
I don't care about the trash and the collateral bathroom breaks -- these are real Americans and a lot of them HAVE lost jobs. It's not like the police and Wall Street are going to pick up the trash and deliver port-a-potties. They are going to let it sit and stink as much as they can.
