"The thought police would get him just the same. He had committed--would have committed, even if he had never set pen to paper--the essential crime that contained all others in itself. Thoughtcrime, they called it. Thoughtcrime was not a thing that could be concealed forever. You might dodge successfully for a while, even for years, but sooner or later they were bound to get you." ~ Orwell

Does anyone else find this a little creepy?
luke1h7Jan 23, 2012
Actually I don't. It would be surprising if they weren't doing this. With that said I don't like stuff like that hidden carrier app or cameras being everywhere, but this is to be expected.

Why is this creepy? A whole bunch of marketing people do the same so they can manipulate us. Why can't law enforcement do it to keep us safe in our homes? I assure you that criminals have no ethical qualms whatsoever.

social media played a huge part in the Arab Spring. I'd be surprised if they weren't watching it.
FrankLuskaJan 22, 2012
Ha, and people still believe Facebook and other social sites aren't owned by the government.
I've been every where man, government is every where man.
whatsurpointJan 23, 2012
If you've really been everywhere, it has been made possible because there is a government everywhere.
FrankLuskaJan 24, 2012
Nobody doubts government can be good. But we also know it can be very bad ..............
And Johnny Cash really hasn't been everywhere.
whatsurpointJan 24, 2012
True, but you cannot assume all situations are the same. Just like you cannot assume everyone has heard Johnny Cash. :)

We should gain some solace in knowing their ability to consume the vast majority of web information is consistent with "trying to drink water from a fire hose". So, drink up "boys", there's plenty more where that came from...
I don't really care what they read since our government's intelligence services appear blithely detached from economic reality and the national security dangers posed by free trade. Who knows? They might learn something broadly beneficial from the ongoing economic/fiscal debates between us.

"Who knows? They might learn something broadly beneficial from the ongoing economic/fiscal debates between us."
That would indeed be good.

This girl I know (who leaves her door unlocked in a Queens neighborhood btw lol) thinks I'm "paranoid" for using proxies and other security measures online, she won't even put a password on her phone or secure her local network... people are too trusting with their information these days.

if you have a problem with the unwarranted spying, we have a detention center with you name on it.

There was a Twilight Zone episode where Dick York paid for a newspaper and when he threw in the coin in the tray to pay for it it landed on it's edge and stayed there like that all day. Later he found out he could read minds. One mind he read that worked for the bank he worked in he overheard him thinking of robbing the bank. A old dude, later he tried to stop him and found out later the old man thought these thoughts for years and years and most likely have never have actually done it. What you over hear may never actually happen, that that's a danger of this.
