"Peace, commerce and honest friendship with all nations; entangling alliances with none."
-Thomas Jefferson
I respect Israel's right to exist and to defend itself, but with the state America's economy and the alleged abuses committed by the Israeli military, I say it's high time that we let the sovereign nation handle its business by itself.
Aid should still be given for education and poverty. Billion-dollar defense systems, however, do not perform humanitarian tasks nor combat the roots of most unrest in that region for that matter.
diggorelseMay 25, 2011
It would be interesting to take the reins off Israel and watch the nukes popping around the M.E.
And true...as long as they are not allowed to wipe out those who are firing rockets into their land and who deny their right to exist, those defense systems can't do much.
ryangrazianoMay 27, 2011
Nukes are bad for everyone period. Fallout doesnt care which side you are on.
diggorelseMay 28, 2011
But it beats being pushed into the sea.
janincoMay 25, 2011
Netanyahu is spot on.
Closed AccountMay 25, 2011
Why do people post blogs like it's news? Who would've guessed the republicans/Christians would blindly support the PM! Buried.
bensladeMay 25, 2011
Netanyahu could be strong, but still be wrong. He derides appeasement yet practices it by not opposing jewish settlements pushed by his ultra-orthodox right wing. He opposes terrorism, but doesn't really fight the grinding poverty in the occupied territories which guarantees a steady stream of future terrorists.
davidnivenMay 25, 2011
It's not the economy that is creating terrorists. It's their religious indoctrination and agenda.
That poverty-breeds-terrorism idea got debunked a long time ago. Stop watching Christiane Amanpour on CNN please. Her blather is maddening.
avleMay 25, 2011
Too simple. Powerty, illiteracy obviously plays a role along with middle age beliefs. You easily find strictly Muslim countries without terrorists, just like you find piss poor ones. You even find stinking rich countries with christian terrorists.
chrismurphyMay 25, 2011
This is correct. The consistent theme in terrorism is occupation from a perceived foreign invader.
kasha34May 26, 2011
@avle "You easily find strictly Muslim countries without terrorists" Really? Like which?
"You even find stinking rich countries with christian terrorists." Oh, is this about abortion bombers again? Come on, it's been like ten years.
avleMay 26, 2011
depends on what you like to count, any country have nut cases, so myself I like to be in the safe end of the scale of deaths per capita on lists like this
http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/ter_ter_act_200_inj_percap-2000-2006-injuries-per-capita
a country like Azerbaijan, where the population is > 90% muslim, was as safe as the safest recently.
kasha34May 26, 2011
That's nice. Tell them to stay in Azerbaijan, please.
eraptorMay 25, 2011
Dave,
You couldn't be MORE wrong on the perils of poverty in the West Bank/Gaza. The revolutions sweeping the Middle East are driven by economic disenfranchisement, NOT religious fervor. I suppose we shouldn't be surprised that a conservative would be so dismissive of the effects of poverty since your favorite economic/fiscal policies create it, but history has proven conservatives WRONG on this issue throughout the centuries of world history.
Where did that "let them eat cake" attitude get Marie Antoinette? The guillotine. Remember this the next time you choose to ignore the political consequences of poverty/economic disenfranchisement.
planet87May 25, 2011
He said terrorism... not revolution. Terrorism is fed/caused by religious fervor/indoctrination. The revolutions are something else. Hopefully, their cause won't get hijacked by the terrorists... But if the people are poorly educated, it's likely they will.
eraptorMay 28, 2011
Reminds me of the old saying, "one man's terrorist is another man's revolutionary".
I'm not sure ideology drives revolution/terror as much as economic disenchantment. However, ideology does play a part in guiding the aftermath since a power vacuum is created. That's how Lenin was able to inject Communism into Russia. The revolt against the Czar was created by economic disenfranchisement, not Communist ideology. It was only after the Czar refused to implement economic reforms to ease poverty, suffering and corruption that the Russian people revolted against him.
Sound familiar? It should as those same conditions laid the framework for most revolutions throughout history...French, American, Middle East (at present), etc.
kamtsaMay 25, 2011
benslade, you simply don't know what you are talking about.
ultra-orthodox do not have settlement in the west bank. Most of them do not serve in the military and many are actually anti Zionists.
As for the 'griding poverty', if the Palestinians do not help themselves, nobody else can. They prefer to focus on hate rather then to better their life.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mV_eN4YEEI0
sungoddess808May 25, 2011
Well, Palestinians are not the only ones who need to help themselves. The ultra-religious rely heavily upon the Israeli government aka tax payers to support them and their 8-12 children per family. They should all get off their ass and work!
eraptorMay 28, 2011
Just out of curiosity, how are Palestinians supposed to "help themselves" when they're heavily occupied and their infrastructure routinely destroyed. The ONLY choices they have left are poverty, misery, resistance or death and that's NO accident. Those living conditions are created to "encourage" Palestinians to leave.
I don't know about you, but facing similar circumstances, most people with any shred of self-respect would do the SAME thing.
abstractj3May 25, 2011
I'd love to see them agree to two separate sates, The Palestian's need to stop attacking and hating the Jews. Israel needs to have safer military practices which do not harm innocent victims. The people of these countries are genetically the same, the only really division is one of history and religion.
kamtsaMay 25, 2011
.. history , religion and *culture* and *values*.
abstractj3May 26, 2011
nice addition,
jamesotisMay 26, 2011
No army in the history of nations has done more to safeguard the lives of civilians than the IDF. Contrarily, no people in the history of nations have been so debased as to deliberately use their own children as human shields as the gang of genocidal thugs who fraudulently style themselves as the "Palestinians."
kasha34May 26, 2011
Bingo. And fat lot of good it does them.
kasha34May 26, 2011
"Israel needs to have safer military practices which do not harm innocent victims." The IDF takes more precautions than any military in all of history.
abstractj3May 26, 2011
That's what it says on all the Pro-Israeli websites, but the numbers tell a different story.
kasha34May 26, 2011
You mean because more Palestinians have been killed.
Too bad. If they stop launching rockets and mortars bombs, if they stop sending kidnap teams...then Israel wouldn't have to defend itself. It's a simple concept.
rastas11May 25, 2011
What a statesman. He took the pile of garbage that Obama heaped on him and put a realistic light on the situation in Israel and the surrounding chaos without pointing out his foolishness. Actually complimenting him many times. Appeasement there will be on a short lease, as well it should after countless bombings and rocket assaults.
digghasnoethicsMay 25, 2011
?
He looked like he was totally out of it - trying to convince himself that the world was other than it is and that he had a choice about the shape of change. A poor statesman that just looked out of touch and unwilling to change.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

Netanyahu showed clear leadership. People may not agree with policy, but if I were an Israeli, I'd want him as Comander in Chief.
hotelogix1May 25, 2011
I don't think that Obama is a good leader
mtduff421May 25, 2011
Thanks for your very valuable opinion!
avleMay 25, 2011
The only thing bibi has shown with his leadership is how to run a country directly towards annihilation. Bibi says he is thrilled about getting democratic neighbors. In reality Israel depend on having us friendly dictators there. Bibi has got some nerve. Israel is like a few million people, but stll think they have some god given right to command the most powerful president in the world around. the way Israel has treated millions of so called Palestinians the last decades is not worthy of a democracy. The sorry mess of the middle east should be the prime example of why god is dead, and that a separation of religion and politics should be the norm for any country that wants to think about itself as civilized.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
kamtsaMay 25, 2011
Actually, the Arabs that have the most democratic rights in the ME are the Arab citizens of Israel. They enjoy full freedom of speech (including support of Israel's enemies) and elect their own parliament members.
Compare this with any other ME country.
avleMay 25, 2011
There are several US reports on the discrimination of the Arab population in Israel. Israel has little to be proud of. Comparison to underdeveloped, Islamic neighbors make no sense, their leadership is a joke, their religion more out of date than the orthodox church, and their people poorly educated. we have higher expectations for Israel. Jews have a proud history of intelligence and being able to preserve their culture around the globe over a long time. But seeing how Israel treat the countryless people of gaza and the west bank less than 60 years after the holocaust makes one shake the head in disbelief. If Israel continue along this path, they will end up alone and suffer enormous losses, just a question of time. The sympathy gained 60 years ago is at stake, mostly due to aggressiveness.
chrismurphyMay 25, 2011
Comparison to other countries is invalid. Comparison to one's own code of ethics is what matters. And Israel is a 4th Geneva Convention signatory. That code says you can't export a people from their homes or land. Israel has done both. It has roads for arabs and roads only for jews. The arabs in the West Bank are ultimately controlled by Israeli law, but have no free speech, or voting rights in Knesset and are not citizens. They're forced into being stateless occupied people. And there's colonization occurring on those occupied lands, also not legal.
So by the standards of a modern democratic country, Israel is an apartheid state. Not a democracy.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
dandan111May 25, 2011
Bibi talked about freedom, democracy and liberty. Obama muddled around on Arab spring' and '67 borders. It was a difference of ideas and outlook. Obama is not convinced of anything except what it takes to stay in power. That shines through in everything he says

Yes, wake up America, Jewish people are the most important people in the world.
davidnivenMay 25, 2011
According to God, everyone's soul has equal worth...but God DID choose the Jewish people for something special. That they failed to respond to God doesn't mean God changed his mind about them.

avleMay 25, 2011
The problem is, THERE IS NO GOD, IT IS A FAIRYTALE. should I repeat, FAIRYTALE. the worst part is, if he was for real he would very likely not be very happy about being used as an alibi for israels actions the latter decades, this is according to his son, who preached about the golden rule, and other socialist ideas. Right wing us Christians easily forget Jesus was a true socialist and a supporter of the pure and the poor.
davidnivenMay 25, 2011

The difference between scientific theories and bible fairytales is that the former is evidence based and constantly adapting and improving as the evidence improves. The result of all this knowledge surround us every day. The bible is several thousand years old and seriously out of touch with modern societies. I am very sorry you don't have a sex life, but remember, it is never too late to ditch religion and start living a rich life.

David,
Come on. So those of us who doubt Gods existence are motivated by profligate sexual desires? Most non-believers that I know are very moral people, married and have children just as you and I do.
davidnivenMay 25, 2011
"So those of us who doubt Gods existence are motivated by profligate sexual desires?"
Most are. But, even if the sexual restrictions don't turn you off to God's existence, the other laws will.
"Most non-believers that I know are very moral people, married and have children just as you and I do."
Maybe they are "moral" people because they feel like being so. There is a difference between being moral because it works for you or makes you feel good versus obeying simply because God says so.
The law doesn't matter if you don't believe in the Law Giver.
monvalleyMay 26, 2011
obama's a flim-flammer when he talks; Netanyahu is a communicator. Plus he knows what he is talking about. These two speeches weren't fair; a man vs. an immature community aggitator.
KapsiotMay 25, 2011
Obama is such a failure. I want Netanyahu as president of the U.S.
eraptorMay 25, 2011
Netanyahu is a self-absorbed schmuck who can't see that the policies he champions are harming Israel's future and prospects for peace. It's a tragic shame that a hard liner who shared Netanyahu's views assassinated Rabin because Rabin recognized the dangers created by Israeli hardliners.
