Republican presidential contender Mitt Romney said on Saturday he would veto a proposal granting U.S. citizenship to immigrants who were brought to the country as children, a pledge that won hearty applause from Republican mighty white base he hopes to win over.
mtownJan 28, 2012
Well there goes his chance at the Hispanic vote.
screwkevinJan 28, 2012
Because Hispanics hate laws and cannot wait until US turns into one of those s**tholes they worked so hard to escape from?
penglustJan 28, 2012
But that is what the Republicans want.
ganjadude4391Jan 28, 2012
has nothing to do with race has all to do with the law, It is not fair to those who do come here legally, it keeps legal immigrants in line for longer than needed.
And I love how the article doesnt mention that its "granting us citizenship to people who are in the country illegally" they make it sound like they are here legally.... gotta love political correctness
u2canfailJan 29, 2012
On question: Did the children have a choice?
ganjadude4391Jan 29, 2012
once they got old enough to go through the proper channels yes, they did have a choice And if their parents loved them as much as people try and claim they do, they wouldnt have put their child in that situation to begin with
u2canfailJan 29, 2012
For the parents it was a matter of eating. Children do eat. Try again. The child cannot apply for citizenship, while living here.
ganjadude4391Jan 29, 2012
Read what I wrote again my friend, I said when the child is old enough. im not saying that it can be done now im not an expert in the laws involved, but if the law was fair Once that child is 18 it is up to him to do the right thing. Its not my fault his parents thought they were doing the right thing by breaking the law and sadly they will have to deal with it when they get older.
now if these kids when theywere old enough to know they were not suposed to be here started going through the process, I could see that as an ok place to start allowing them citizenship. BUT
they need to be the ones to make the effort by the time they turn 18 to go through through the process, their parents have to go back home and wait on line like everyone else, and this should not be a ongoing thing, there should be a grace period where we say if you are i nthis country now, and you are under 20 but old enough to know better. come forward and we will work with you, but in XX years it stops because than the trend will continue just as the ancor babies continue
u2canfailJan 30, 2012
You would send an 18 year old back to a place he/she has never lived, tell them to just "make it" and apply. OK then, send your child, just to see how it works, and you can choose "Mexico for fun".
ganjadude4391Jan 30, 2012
no thats not what i said at all I said IF the kids, who had no control make the right move, they can stay if they do it by the time they are 20 or so, but their parents have to go back home and wait in line. I do understand that the kids didnt have any control, but that still doesnt make it right, if we dont do SOMETHING they will continue to do what they do because they know if they have a child here than we wont kick them out

Note tcbishop12's substitution of "mighty white" for conservative from the article - typical of the racist left's dishonesty and willingness to resort to any sort of slur.
brsox2445Jan 28, 2012
As someone who supports the DREAM Act, saying that you don't support the bill doesn't meant you are anti-immigrant.
I am going to guess that most people haven't read the bill...
u2canfailJan 29, 2012
I do like it. "Reasonable way to become a citizen."
ganjadude4391Jan 29, 2012
you mean like following the laws on the books??? sounds reasonable to me
u2canfailJan 30, 2012
Only reasonable, if you already make a living in your country, and can apply and wait. There is the difference.
ganjadude4391Jan 30, 2012
that sounds reasonable to the person who broke the law, not so much to the person who cant get into the country the legal way because of that person cutting in line
mercedrocksJan 28, 2012
Its not anti-immigrant its anti-cutting in line ahead of people patiently waiting their turn to immigrate to this country. Even my niece 's new Uncle (illegal) went back to Mexico for a year to get his green card - legally!
u2canfailJan 29, 2012
Even if one is an adult that is not an easy choice sir. What age do you graduate high school?
mercedrocksJan 30, 2012
The law is the law. Its not fair to cut in line while others wait patiently. Worst part is that Mexico isnt nearly as lenient as we are when it comes to illegal immigration.
brucealmightyJan 28, 2012
I can support a path to citizenship for those willing to serve a 2 year military enlistment, but not so much for those willing to earn a (frequently) government subsidized college education.
Nothing against the kids - I accept they generally had no say in being brought into the US illegally - but it just perpetuates the problems if parents know that once they smuggle their kids into the country they are then home free for life. Why take the much harder legal immigration route when you can just hop the fence instead with the same ultimate results?
craig1958Jan 28, 2012
Because that's what we need; more unemployed veterans and less college educated people in the workforce?
assassyn360Jan 28, 2012
I am a college educated unemployed veteran.
I am not helping.
*Rides off into the sunset.*
brucealmightyJan 29, 2012
No, what we need is people willing to offer their time and services in exchange for their citizenship instead of just accepting subsidies to earn a degree which still doesn't mean they are likely to be any more employable than a trained and honorably discharged veteran.
craig1958Jan 29, 2012
The military is about to downsize by about 100,000; let's see what dumping all those kids into the private sector does for unemployment. Being willing to join the military is not my idea of a virtue, especially when we need the military to become much smaller. I would much prefer to have citizens with marketable skills, even if they are required to obtain degrees in specific areas.
bille3Jan 28, 2012
If they are "immigrants" and have been here since childhood, then why is it they did not apply for immigration and subsequent citizenship. They had no plan to "immigrate" and become an American or they would have. Now we have a congress and president that wants to just give citizenship to any illegal alien that wants it.
That is a real insult to all of the immigrants that applied to enter this country, went through the entry process and finally achieved citizenship by obeying ALL of the laws and rules. Those are the people that made this country great and they are being treated like second class peasants. If anyone should get to go to the front of the line and receive citizenship first, it should each and every person that has an active, open, legal immigration case file that wants to come to America and become a citizen. Those are the folks that should be receiving the royal treatment since there is plenty of room for them.
travelsonicJan 28, 2012
The definition of immigration is merely about the movement - just because said person didn't apply doesn't mean they didn't immigrate, it just means they did so illegally.
u2canfailJan 28, 2012
If your parents brought you here, we hate you too. We hate children.
adaguyJan 28, 2012
I don't see it that way. Anchor babies should no longer be allowed. The mess with immigration has gone on long enough.
This really started when Reagan cut the budget of the border patrol, and then sucked up to three million illegals who took advantage of the open border. It's been going on ever since, and it is damning to the wage rates here in the US.
An abundance of employees keeps wages lower, and thereby lowers the standard of living for others in the US.
If I thought Romney would actually do this, He would get my vote.
arizonasettlerJan 28, 2012
It's called obeying laws. Just because someone breaks the laws shouldn't allow someone to gain from that activity. Isn't there a crime of possessing stolen property? Obama promised a return to the rule of law and now we get the government's take on all laws, generally based on donations to their re-election.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
adaguyJan 29, 2012
"Obama promised"
Nothing but bulls**t, and we both know it. Anyone stupid enough to think a politician will keep promises is simply in for a rude awakening.
ka5p3rJan 28, 2012
give them what they want, move the Mexican border 1500 miles north.
assassyn360Jan 28, 2012
I support military service to gain citizenship, but I would rather citizenship be gained through the proper process for residents here illegally even if they must be deported to begin the process. I don't think that would work to well for President Obama given krypton is gone. Maybe he can find a surrogate planet.
rych55Jan 30, 2012
Note the submitter's substitution of "mighty white" for conservative from the article - typical of the racist left's dishonesty and willingness to resort to any sort of slur.
Secondly, good for Romney! The act is yet another amnesty, an incentive and enabler of more illegal immigration. Furthermore, the NIGHTMARE amnesty would extend to far more than the image they're trying to push - http://www.numbersusa.com/content/nusablog/beckr/september-20-2010/not-enforcement-first-dream-act-enforcement-never-amnesty.html , http://www.numbersusa.com/content/nusablog/beckj/july-8-2011/dream-supporters-living-fantasy-world-full-employment.html .
rych55Jan 30, 2012
Instead, let's fulfill the dreams of college bound citizens who face reduced college opportunities and financial aid that would be going to illegal aliens instead.

Californians are against the California Dream Act, you know:
"Fifty-five percent of the [California] voters questioned said they oppose a new state law known as the California DREAM Act."Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
