Will Smith has been in the news denying being a member of Scientology.

his life got flipped, turned upside down....

...and id like to take a minute, just sit right there. I'll tell you how he became the ruler of a Galactic Confederacy 75 million years ago, which consisted of 26 stars and 76 planets including Earth, which was then known as "Teegeeack"

He is always denying it, yet he donates millions to the church of Scientology.

jkalJul 8, 2010
I've said this many times and I'll repeat it...
What everyone needs to remember is, to forget all the weird crazy s**t the Co$ has, about aliens spirits and secret courses et al.
Because at the end of the day that is not how they hook people into the cult.
What they do is much more evil, and by that I mean very evil.
See, they initially pose as a caring, loving helpful group. (they have various side organizations posing as kids groups, youth centers, aged free care....) They target people who are in desperate situations or in need of talking to someone. The Co$ steps in and gives these people an ear that will listen.
It is once they gain their victims trust, that is when they start giving them guilt trips and driving the issue that their victim has flaws, and the only way to "fix" those flaws is to do the Co$ courses, of course once they start that is it! as one of the first steps of the course is to do an "audit" basically a confession and they record this, to use as black mail later on. So once they are hooked they do basic self-development course, and of course the victim thinks they are improving, mean while getting deeper and deeper into debt and commitment to the Co$. Once they realise they are too deep in, they cannot get out because they are so insecure they fear the worst if their "audit" got out to the public, and so they are trapped.
Even after people get out they having been messed up so bad psychologically it takes years for them to get back to a regular life. That is one main reason the Co$ oppose psychology , they say it's because of the drugs, but that's only a half truth.
Point is, calling the victims idiots, crazies, nutters and what not... is counter productive as it only drives them further in to that evil cult. Most would not even know anything about Xenu and thetans and the rest.

What about Christianity makes it not a cult? Christians follow a man who died thousands of years ago who said he was God and told us to drink his blood and eat his flesh to remember him until he one day mystically returns to Earth to whisk us all away to Heaven to live with him forever.
I'm a Christian, but I'll willingly acknowledge that at face value a lot of what I believe looks pretty sketchy.

Now Scientology is a brainwashing cult through and through--it's much different.

What I don't understand is how they claim Christ is a mythical figure, and a child molester.
So he doesn't exist, but he molests children?
fungowskiJul 7, 2010

blaqreaperJul 7, 2010
Well you technically Pedobear can be a mythical figure (a stretch I know( and a child molester.
brad324Jul 7, 2010
^ yeah, but that's what Pedobear is. It's like trying to claim Mickey Mouse was a child molester. There is no evidence given the "myths" in which the character is based on.
iph0neJul 8, 2010
Fictional characters can have attributes.
Smurfs are blue. They are still blue even though they don't exist.
emkaysmithJul 7, 2010
Scientology (originally Dianetics) doesn't even qualify as a "cult." It was invented by LRH in response to a barroom bet, just to see if he could do it. ("Watch this! I'll even have them believing in the magical properties of a couple of orange juice cans! I'm not s**tting you! They'll eat it up!") And then it was proclaimed to be a "church" so he wouldn't have to pay taxes on all the profits he was reaping. Even so, he stayed at sea on his yacht for all the later part of his life because he knew the IRS wanted to have a long talk with him.
Even a cult is (usually) established by someone who actually believes the nonsense he claims and promotes. Hubbard just giggled all the way to the bank. I have my doubts about the mental stability of *anyone* who needs to believe in fairy tales -- but there's a special place in the psych ward for Scientologists.

deweyhewsonJul 8, 2010
Christianity is a GREAT religion; it's "Christians" that are usually the problem.
Who can argue with anything Christ himself actually said? Forgive and love others, show compassion, turn the other cheek, and so on and so forth.
Just because 99% of Christians don't even come close to living up to that doesn't mean the message itself is bad.
emkaysmithJul 8, 2010

The beliefs and practices of scientology are no more ridiculous than those of any belief system not based on rational thought and observations of the natural world. but since Christianity is a much older cult of bizarre beliefs and rituals and scientology is younger and a threat to recruiting more people to Christianity, it is branded as evil.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

Yes the beliefs and practices of scientology are more ridiculous - mainly for one simple reason; Scientology charges a mandatory fee to learn its teachings.

Lovejoy counting up the collection money for the day.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
secretrussianJul 7, 2010
Oh please. Have you ever even been to church to really know what you're talking about? I'm a Christian, and I know I'm not required to pay anything. They do put out a collection plate - for DONATIONS to the church that you can choose to put money in or not. Also, since Christianity is such a large religion, there's bound to be differences here and there, so don't blame us all for the same thing.
porphyroJul 7, 2010
Anyone with $5 can buy a Bible. The entirety of the Christian faith is contained within one book. Nothing else is necessary. In fact, you can walk into most churches say "I'd like a Bible" and they'll give you one gratis. It costs nothing - I repeat NOTHING - to attend church and hear the sermons that expound on the Bible. Can you say the same thing about Scientology? Sure they solicit donations, but no one - well, almost no one - is going to say that you aren't allowed into Heaven for not being able to give tithe.
thegrizz51Jul 7, 2010
Anyone with $10 can buy a copy of Dianetics too.

danj484Jul 8, 2010
@pseudo: mandatory tithing has been gone for decades (not that they enforced it, it was more of a guilt trip thing), and indulgences have been gone for centuries. Nothing compels one to be a Christian, and I'm sure the same is true of the other major religions.

tehpwnzorJul 8, 2010
It does matter how much you have to pay. Forced tithing demonstrates that their focus is on MONETARY GAIN. All other religions of the world focus on LIFE AFTER DEATH. You should question anyone, even yourself, that has faith in something with absolutely no proof. Especially movements which thrive from lack of proof.
cp101Jul 7, 2010
that is much different than a guy who goes by the name ELRON[sic] that writes a story about an intergalactic ruler named XENU who drops alien souls named THETANS into volcanoes using spaceships that happen to look like C130s.
much different from a text written over 2500 years ago that was based on yet another text that was even older and mainly carried on by oral tradition.
niftyswiftyJul 7, 2010
Why? Why does the age of the text make ANY difference whatsoever? Greek "mythology" is older than anything in the new testament--does that mean we should revere the "truth" revealed there more than Matthew, Mark, Luke and John?
They both stand without proof of anything written in them, regardless of how old they are. Period.
propethicJul 7, 2010
You don't need proof to live by a moral code. The bible is not just about Jesus you know, Scientology's codes to live by are much different than simple moral ones (like how psych medication is a form of mind control)
cp101Jul 7, 2010
I'm not saying that at all... I'm saying that this cat made some s**t up fifty sixty years ago, got a bunch of new-agers with money to believe it and called it good. I'm going after the guy =
" mean, most people in my religion are waiting for some dude to float down soon. Check this other one, some geeza took a boat yea, filled it with all the worlds animals. wait for it.wait for it.. this other dude yea, basically opened the red sea... like whoa!!."
And then, what I'm trying to get at, is that those stories are folk myths, rooted in some sort of fact but completely transformed throughout the ages. Not a story about some Alien dictator getting angry at his prison population and dumping it on a small green planet. that sounds like science fiction mumbo jumbo, primarily because it is.
belebihJul 7, 2010
"In terms of their faith, I have no right to question theirs"
Yes, you do. This is a big part of the problem, the blind respect that's given to religion and people's beliefs. A lot of people believe some really goofy s**t, and same as they have the right to believe it, everyone else has the right to question them and call them out on it, especially when the results of beliefs are harmful to others.

newman8rJul 8, 2010
I never said it was a contradiction, just that it was weak

Would be nice if you could get the title right. '...Lies About Scientology...' should be '...Lies of Scientology...'

Scientology offends both science and religion by claiming it's associated with either one.
epersonJul 7, 2010
Religion is purely offensive. Science cares not what the cults think of it, they are merely phenomena to study if one has the stomach to wade through such drool...Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

Not quite so insidious.
fungowskiJul 7, 2010
To those who keep saying the major world religions are the same as cults, there is one key distinction. Cults do not reveal the mysterious minutia of their mythology until you are deep into the cult. While priests, rabbis, etc will happily tell you all about their mythology and moral code, ad nauseum, whether you asked to hear about it or not.
epersonJul 7, 2010
Nonsense.
When have you ever heard the pope say, "Hominis Bibidis Leviticus, we are here to rape your little boys."
They are all cults - there is no magical number of adherents or number of times the lie is repeated that change this simple fact.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
honukaiJul 7, 2010
Theres lots that you won't be able to hear unless you are in the cult. All "religions" operate the same way, just less blanently.
tearlockJul 8, 2010
From Dictionary.com:
cult   /kʌlt/ Show Spelled[kuhlt] Show IPA
–noun
1.a particular system of religious worship, esp. with reference to its rites and ceremonies.
2.an instance of great veneration of a person, ideal, or thing, esp. as manifested by a body of admirers: the physical fitness cult.
3.the object of such devotion.
4.a group or sect bound together by veneration of the same thing, person, ideal, etc.
5.Sociology. a group having a sacred ideology and a set of rites centering around their sacred symbols.
6.a religion or sect considered to be false, unorthodox, or extremist, with members often living outside of conventional society under the direction of a charismatic leader.
7.the members of such a religion or sect.
8.any system for treating human sickness that originated by a person usually claiming to have sole insight into the nature of disease, and that employs methods regarded as unorthodox or unscientific.
So you see. Every religion is a cult. Your definition falls under definition #6 but that's completely subjective as all religions consider each other to be "unorthodox" or "false" and only their own respective religions are "True." Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

I love bashing on Scientology, but I have a hard time bashing on L. Ron Hubbard. I am fairly convinced that Scientology is either a brilliant practical joke or social experiment carried out by Hubbard. After learning about the man, he sounds like a very smart guy.....A guy who is smart enough to instigate a ruse like this.
kevroJul 7, 2010
No ruse, he did it for money. A well woven science fiction story may make a bit of money but that same story , claimed to be a religion will make a bundle of cash , ongoing. This is why you have to spend thousands of dollars to lern the higher *truths* a.k.a see more chapters. All the rules and practices of this religion are shaped to keep the process working and the money flowing. That is Scientology.

I have a hard time bashing on Hitler too. He seems like a pretty smart guy who just ran his experiment. Yeah, it went bad in the end, but can you really fault him?
Ron Hubbard knowingly created an evil organization, and for that reason alone he is a f**king evil bastard who should be tortured to death the slowest and most painful way imaginable. Plain and simple as that.
cepsterJul 8, 2010
Comparing him to Hitler is a pretty huge stretch. As far as I know, Scientologists haven't been involved in murder of any kind, let alone mass genocide. STFU.

Pretty sure that scientology is a money-laundering organization for Hollywood. It's the only logical explanation.

boneheadfarkerJul 7, 2010
No. Scientology IS a money making business. And it's leaders managed to blackmail the US government into giving them higher status in regards to tax breaks than all other religions.
