I say stick with the lesser of two idiots. Good luck figuring out which one that would be though.

"a idiot"
?
You are an idiot grammatically.

Yes, but it's better than the bigot they tried to elect before they picked Steele...

Colecoman, Steele is still a homophobic bigot.
colecoman1982Jul 7, 2010
@secrity: From my standpoint, I have yet to see anything specific to suggest he wasn't those things (though I wouldn't be surprised if he was). On the other hand, the guy they tried to elect before him thought it was cool to pass around copies of his recording of "Barrack the magic negro" as Christmas presents.

Would you honestly not prefer two viable candidates to choose from?
I don't get partisanship =/
cheviotJul 7, 2010
But this is just too good. The Republicans want this. They're crazy to want it, but damn, if it shows off just what the Republican party has become I'm all for Palin as the Chairperson!
13point1Jul 7, 2010
If the Republicans offer a candidate, that person is not viable by definition. See: McCain, Palin, Bush, Cheney...
therednewtJul 7, 2010
I think you could argue that the quicker people realize how ridiculous that party is, they quicker we can move past their current form and into a world with two viable parties.
Closed AccountJul 7, 2010
Your logic for wanting the Republicans to appoint a bad candidate, is that they have a history of nominating bad candidates?
I'm getting buried, but I can't see why anyone would want a single viable candidate (who might just be the lesser of two evils) over two (or more) viable, strong candidates other than blind partianship.
As awful as it might sound to many, for the country to continue to uphold democratic principles into the future, the Republicans need viable candidates. This is in EVERYONES' long term interest.
ldkronosJul 7, 2010
@visionaryIX
From my point of view, the Republican party has proven itself to be on a downward spiral. Their position have gotten more and more ridiculous, with their sole goal being to do the opposite of whatever the Democrats want, no matter how stupid it makes them look. And it's not just a few members of the party supporting these silly policies, but rather an overwhelming number of them. At this point, I feel the Republican party is without hope...there's no way to save the party and restore it to sanity. It would be nice if our political system could support more than 2 parties, but the way things work at the moment I just don't believe that's possible. So the way I see it, the Republican party is just sitting there, squatting on a valuable spot on the ballot. The sooner they die, the sooner some other party can step up and provide a more realistic, less stupid opposition to the Democrats.
masterspeeksJul 7, 2010
I think we are all tired of the Republican party. We want a real libertarian party that is actually fiscally conservative and not a bunch of religious fundies/bigots. That isn't going to happen until the Republican party implodes.
secrityJul 7, 2010
visionaryIX; I would agree with you if the Republican party hadn't transformed into a hateful group of Christian bigots. The Republican party at one time was a viable political party, but now that the Christian right has taken over the GOP, they need to replace the elephant with a toon of Jesus in a clown suit.
cdw070Jul 7, 2010
You obviously how no idea how much money in donations Palin can bring to the Republican party. She already rakes in millions for GOP fundraisers, most of the candidates she's endorsed have won elections, and not all of them Tea Party candidates either.

soleanthiaJul 7, 2010

secrityJul 7, 2010
She doesn't have to be intelligent to be a lucrative figurehead.
dmax801Jul 7, 2010
Really, who runs the GOP at this point? Palin? Steele? Bachmann? Jeb Bush? Cheney (either)? Limbaugh? Hatch? Beck?
Combine that with their inability to create a "brand" that appeals to folks that aren't 1) rich or 2) nutjobs and you've got the end of the Republican Party.
The shame is that the Democrats are such unfocused idealists that they can't create their own coherent party message so that they can rally the disaffected.
So... Palin/Steele would be great. It would be egregiously BAD that it would shake folks up and maybe get things going towards real change.
fluoroJul 7, 2010
I want to agree with you, but I just can't.
Even as insane as Republicans seem now, I still feel like they've got a more consistent brand than Democrats do. They always have. They just happen to have a bunch of wingnuts mixed in that are messing things up for them.
The Republican brand is "fiscal responsibility". The sad thing is that they have never, in my lifetime, demonstrated any real interest in this. But somehow they have created this association, and people believe that they really stand for it.
I vote primarily Democrat (only because it's a 2-party system, and they're not as offensive to me), but I still don't know what their primary thing is. Every Democrat who runs has a different message.
ldkronosJul 7, 2010
@fluoro
"Every Democrat who runs has a different message."
It's a shame that that is considered a damning thing. Politicians should have their own ideals and promote them freely. The party should be people with similar beliefs, but not zombies with identical beliefs. If someone will change their "beliefs" to be with their party in order to get votes, they'll change their "beliefs" for corporate money (which buys them votes).
arfikeJul 7, 2010
I second this. Just think of how much trouble the country has gotten into over party loyalty.
There are establishment Republicans and there are establishment Democrats (Emanuel, Pelosi, Hillary Clinton, Reid) -- and those of both parties are nothing but career politicians rather than public servants.
But at least with the Democrats you have Sanders and Kucinich and Grayson and Webb and Warner. It's no wonder that the Republicans have lost so many seats in the past two election seasons. The only politicians who stand on their principles anymore are Democrats.
And to say that a party needs to have a more solid brand is just catering to idiots. Let's keep politics in the print media, including web articles. Let's keep it out of the gossip columns. Lord knows if you had to actually read to know what's going on in the country there would be a hell of a lot less posturing and shaming people into voting for them (eg. The Religious Right) and probably a lot more domestic tranquility for the greater good (and no, I'm not referring to Socialism, for petes sake).
No more "down with government health care -- as long as I have my medicare I'll be just fine!" I guess in Palin Land the police work for free and the roads pave themselves.
ddrskataJul 7, 2010
Both parties need to change if we want real change in this country. The Democrats either need to become an actually liberal party and become more focused if they're going to accomplish anything, and the Republicans need to ditch the religious bent and get some people who are actually fiscally responsible if they want to seem like anything more than insane hypocrites. In this scenario, I'd be more likely to give a f**k about my chosen party (the Democratic Party), but things would be a lot better regardless of who won. As things stand, we're f**ked if a Republican wins regardless and we're probably f**ked, maybe not as much but maybe just as much, if a Democrat wins.
deathandtavernsJul 7, 2010
She can raise money though, it might be a bad thing to make her the political equivalent of a pharmaceutical rep.
magus_melchiorJul 7, 2010
I never thought I would agree on something with a conservative talking head, albeit for different reasons.
As Cenk Uygur would say, "Have at it, Hoss." If they keep Steele, they maintain an ever-teetering status quo and blindness to reason and irony.
If, God forbid, they oust Steele and choose Palin, they will have signed the divorce papers for many of their voters-- however few are left during and after 2008. Why? Jon Stewart, Youtube, and the rest of social media will make sure the public knows every single bit of word salad she has ever spoken or written. She is unfit to lead politically, and the steadfast refusal to learn how indicates she will never be fit to lead.
arfikeJul 7, 2010
Sarah Palin is as hip and in touch with today's pop culture as an ABC Afterschool Special. Ya ever notice that?
luke1457Jul 7, 2010

cdw070Sep 23, 2010
deathandtaverns is correct. Michael Steele hasn't been overly successful on the fund raising trail. Palin would bring in a ton of loot to the party. So much money that the GOP would even have cash to bombard MSNBC, The Daily Show, and even South Park with an endless arrary of commercials.
Be careful what you wish for, idiot liberals, you may get it.
spacem00seJul 6, 2010
Maybe she will lead the GOP, after she loses the primaries.
azrobotoJul 7, 2010

magus_melchiorJul 7, 2010
Well, she would first have to install a bunch of cronies in key RNC positions, and direct a few campaign boondoggles that wreck the GOP's financing arm, if her tenure as Wasilla mayor and Alaska governor are any clue.
Essentially, George W. Bush on PCP.
ddrskataJul 7, 2010

byronneJul 7, 2010
What is it that 'you' would do? As a moderate, I think it's kinda sad that the RNC is so completely f**ked up - but maybe they have to hit the bottom in order to normalize in some fashion. Doesn't anyone else think that complete polarization is really, really negative?
akchrsJul 7, 2010
Quick, without googleing!! Who is the Chairman of the DNC? Just as I thought. You don't know.
byronneJul 7, 2010
Tim Kaine doesn't seem to make as much of a spectacle of himself as Steele does, Point?
mcnerdJul 7, 2010
The Chairman of the DNC doesn't play much of a leadership role because Obama, Reid, and Pelosi all "outrank" him in terms of their public visibility and their ability to control policy. Likewise, if McCain were president then Steele's shenanigans wouldn't matter (although he's good for a laugh, so we'd probably still hear about him now and then).
But under the circumstances, Steele is in the highest position of leadership in the Republican party. Or he would be, except that he's a joke and so nobody pays him any attention. Thus the GOP has no real leader, and its policy is controlled by its members' individual interests. Some of them find it convenient to draw in the Limbaugh crowd by echoing the views of far right-wing pundits, so that those pundits become a major guiding force in the party. Others are just keeping their mouths shut and hoping that Democrats will screw themselves over.

Let's ignore the fact that she took six years at five colleges to get a Communications degree. Let's ignore the fact that she claimed to have foreign policy experience because there's a spot in Alaska from which you can see Russia. That's funny because study after study show those that identify as liberal are only 30% of the American population. Conservative over 40% and moderate the rest. But seeing as how moderates are fleeing the current incarnation of the democrat party and Obama the number is higher for conservatives. The thing is you liberals believe you are the majority because of the main stream and Hollywood are such influences on our culture that everyone believes as you do. But they don't. You are a MINORITY and always will be. Even African Americans and Hispanics who vote over 90% and 60% respectively for democrats when polled on liberal and conservative issues vote overwhelmingly for conservation issues. That is why gay marriage in California was overturned. It was the minorities voting against it. You sir and all your liberal cohorts are the vocal minority on this country.
I will also add that the upheaval of our system in the 60's and 70's was good in granting women and minorities equal rights. But what else was associated with that time? The government was too big and intrusive in our lives. Yet you modern day liberals have no problem with big government. You decried the Bush admin. for warrantless wire taps and such yet the obama admin. has kept those in place, not repealed them. But that's okay because he has a D in front of his name. HYPOCRITS. You are an ignorant, stupid person. You on the left are truly showing your colors, from the dirt pile you are at to the president. That is why you all will lose big in November and in 2012. If the major media were truly unbiased you pathetic, insignificant little trolls would be nothing, nowhere. But them and hollywood will continue to carry your message of love and peace and man made global warming. If not for them you would be ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. hivoltage815Jul 7, 2010
Only reason the blue dogs are "disloyal" is because it is ridiculous to think two political parties could encompass all viewpoints in one. If you look at the house, there are many different viewpoints: conservative leaning democrats, libertarian republicans, neoconservatives, traditional conservatives, etc. I don't understand why you would get upset over that like some people do labeling it as "disloyalty."
13point1Jul 7, 2010
We had very high expectations for the Democratic supermajority that was elected to the Senate in 2008. However, disloyal members of the party - people who ignored the expectations with which they were elected - sided against the Democrats and stymied progress that the American people had unequivocally demanded. So yes, we're angry about it.

"Do you seriously believe they're more intelligent than Palin?"
...
Yes.
I watched practically all of the election footage I could assimilate (without causing a seizure). Yes, Obama is much smarter than Palin.
I didn't see a great deal of Biden speaking, but since the worst thing that people seem to say about him is that he sometimes uses curse words, I would say he's probably smarter than Palin also.
sloppyjoes7Jul 7, 2010
Obama uses a teleprompter. Ever seen him speak extemporaneously? And no, the "worst thing that people seem to say about Biden" is NOT about his usage of curse words. You obviously only listen to people who are very favorable to Biden, if that's all you heard.
The fact is that Palin is obviously intelligent. If you want to play games about searching for examples of Palin's gaffes, then I can find equal numbers that Obama or Biden made.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

Yep. At the RNC. And he owned them.

"Obama uses a teleprompter."
So does everybody who speaks on television and in front of large crowds, including former presidents.
If McCain had won, he'd be using a teleprompter. So would Palin. If that's really one of people's concerns regarding Obama, they can't have that many.
Obama also can't fly without some sort of artificial mechanical propulsion. Let's go after him for that as well.
I have yet to hear a criticism of Biden that does not involve his choice of words or lack of tact. I notice that you failed to provide one.
And Palin...if it's not obvious to you now that she's not terribly smart, I can't say anything that might convince you. She was owned by a girl with down syndrome for Christ's sake!
magus_melchiorJul 7, 2010
"We've seen Obama's interviews. We've seen Biden's interviews."
The issue is not Obama or Biden, but Sarah Palin. If your only demonstration of Palin's intelligence is to tear the President and Vice-President down, you are indeed blind and/or stupid.
ddrskataJul 7, 2010
@sloppyjoes7: Are you really trying to claim, with zero irony, that Obama, who graduated magna cum laude from Harvard Law and ran the Harvard Law Review, is less intelligent than Palin, who couldn't name a newspaper or founding father and who took six years at five colleges to get a Communications degree?

So, Obama wasn't the one who decided to expand the war in Afghanistan by putting more troops in? And Steele is incorrect when he said no nation has won a ground battle with the Afghanistan, and queried as to why we are doing it? Though I wonder why he didn't say this under Bush too.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
kibblesnbittsJul 7, 2010
You understand that Bush started the war in Afghanistan, which is why I'm responding to this and not blindly burying it.
The fact of the matter is, if the troops were to leave Afghanistan and the nation crumbles and falls back into the control of the Taliban, you should know who will get the blame for "allowing Afghanistan to fall"
If heaven-forbid a terrorist attack happens on US Soil and anything at all, no matter how minuscule, can be traced back to a rogue group of Al-Qadea/Taliban in Afghanistan, you know who will be blamed and crucified.
Politics is politics, and despite living in a post-9/11 world, the game has delved down into Democrat vs. Republican, and in the Obama administration's views, the only way to get out is via raising troop levels for now.
digg2point0Jul 7, 2010
Bush started the war in Afghanistan after 9/11 (and rightly so).
Bush then ignored Afghanistan when it stopped boosting his numbers.
Bush declared that the terrorists were now in Iraq... I mean that Iraq had WMDs... I mean that Iraq's people were repressed.
Obama is just putting us back on the right track... winding down and withdrawing from Iraq (where we should not have been) and stepping up in Afghanistan.
bakamasJul 7, 2010
0zzy, you retard....everyone is FOR the Afghanistan war because we need to win it. It needs to be over now. No one thinks poorly of Bush for starting the war in Afghanistan. If anything, they blame him for not paying enough attention to it.

Why would any sensible person ever vote Republican again? Because they are not Democrat? Repubs don't do anything other than to scare people into voting for them.
Besides, I'm not losing any sleep over that. Repubs taking 40 Democrat seats in the house is a longshot, them taking 10 in the senate is next to impossible. They're far more Repub seats up for grabs anyway. 36% is the approval rating of congressional goppers compared to 43% that are Dems. So good luck to ya, Mr Fatass-Armchair-Quarterback.

The thought of Sarah Palin being elected to any position with the power to make policy scares me, so it almost feels like RNC chairmanship's a nice safe place to put her. Then again, I doubt Sarah Palin has any chance of being elected anytime soon, and meanwhile, she might actually become kind of effective as a chairman, where all she really needs to do is raise money and cheerlead, and God knows she can do that. She'd certainly be better at it than Steele, who I'm amazed can even put his own pants on properly.

"ANYONE we would replace Steele with (within reason) would be ripped apart by the left."
Who cares? Not like the right has any love for Howard Dean and he was hugely successful as the DNC Chairman.
It's not cynical to suggest that Steele was chosen in part because he was black in response to Obama's ascendency in the Democratic party. The GOP was forced to darken up and it would have been a smart move if Steele wasn't so embarrassingly out of touch with the conservative base.
Other things being equal, it wouldn't hurt the GOP to find a suitable Hispanic candidate for the job. The GOP has damaged its relationship with Hispanics over the border security debate, and AZ immigrant laws, and even in the Sotomayor confirmation.
I'm probably going to get dinged for putting too much emphasis on "race" but, unfortunately, "race" is a big deal in the US and the GOP is still mostly a lilly-white, male organization.
