Is your ignorance of the word "cackle" meaning both a group of hyenas, or a group of witches, a badge of honor for you?
dipsomaniacAug 19, 2010
Is your ignorance of the fact that "cackle" isn't the collective noun for hyenas or witches a badge of honour for you?
At best, a cackle of hyenas is an obscure literary use - and nobody's going to believe that Palin has that kind of familiarity with obscure literary terms.
apackofmonkeysAug 19, 2010
Really? You're actually arguing that the fact that Palin used a noun that I learned in ELEMENTARY school (along with murder of crows, etc) .means she didn't mean to and therefore stupid? Forgive me, but that really is the weakest argument I've heard in a very long time.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
dipsomaniacAug 19, 2010
Yeah, I looked it up in the dictionary instead, because when you google "cackle" of hyenas what you get is a bunch of people who all equally think they're being clever by "making the term up".
But in zoology, which is where this stuff is actually formulated, hyenas come in clans. Not "cackles". Witches come in covens, equally not in "cackles".

@Dipsomaniac: So you're saying that "clan" is the proper usage then? Why don't you show me in the dictionary? Oh that's right, IT'S not in there either, referring to hyenas. So can I call you stupid and illiterate now, simply because the dictionary doesn't keep up with usage?Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

But cackle isn't in the dictionary either for the definition used by Palin? Do you have an actual point here?
hardwalkerAug 19, 2010
i don't think either clan or cackle is proper, well, all collective nouns are more colloquial anyway
over time, they've entered into some dictionaries
personally, i don't think this isn't nearly as big a blunder as "refudiate" :D lol, since it is used in some regional english
another argument here is that clan actually embodies meaning of a group intuitively, whereas cackle doesn't, but you can see where it came from if you've ever watched lion king :D

And to your question of what has he accomplished, what do you call that health care thingy that you and your ilk complained about saying "It's SOCIALISM!" When it really wasn't anywhere near to that. What has Palin accomplished other than ditching half-way through her term as Governor of the least populated state (non-major cities have larger populations).

No, I don't assume she knew what she was doing (I'll be generous and give her a 50/50, and that's due to the likelihood of a speech writer behind the scenes). However, the response to it only makes the word's usage ironically correct as her detractors are indeed acting like a bunch of hyenas.

Speech:
noun-
1.something that is spoken; an utterance, remark, or declaration: We waited for some speech that would indicate her true feelings.
2.a form of communication in spoken language, made by a speaker before an audience for a given purpose: a fiery speech.
I believe this article is mocking Sarah Palin's grammar and lack of vocabularic knowledge, not her speech.

Now while I'm not particularly pleased that Obama hasn't pushed as hard as he can to reverse this bulls**t, he hasn't done a single thing that approach any of those, much less all of those. You can cry about the healthcare bill all you want, but most of your disdain comes from accepting fascist propaganda "socialism" doublespeak.
kuzmiakAug 19, 2010
David is right. It is better to not have one party in control of everything. Having it all dem or GOP just opens the doors wide for their johns.
Steven: The democrats started more wars than the GOP. The only difference is that most of them were better supported or at least short and successful before the masses got upset. The democrats have also instigated wars when GOP leaders, such as Bush I, didn't jump right into Panama and Iraq.
Obama didn't push to reverse anything. What did he do for torture? Nothing. What about our constitutional rights? Nothing. If anything, he is pushing in the same direction as Bush.

For a long time Democrats and liberals in general thought that they could live above the fray and not confront lies and stupidity head on. They figured if they could ignore it, it would go away and attention would dwindle. Turns out that in the dark closet, the mold grows more. That's why you have people like Limbaugh with millions and millions of listeners who lap up everything he says, and why there is an entire industry revolving around pure right wing talk radio.
You don't get rid of ignorance by letting it fester. You tackle it head on. You mock it, you humiliate it. Ignorance, stupidity, and bigotry won't go away unless it is actively confronted.

It's a legit usage of the word. It's subtle and nuanced and almost poetic, which makes me wonder, who wrote the line. It's uncharacteristic of her public persona to use subtlety or word-play beyond colloquialisms. Even if she wrote it, the stark departure from her usual mannerisms is interesting.

darklanceAug 20, 2010
yahoo did come through on this one. at least its the most authoritative source I can cite:
The most widely-used and zoologically accepted term for a group of hyenas is a clan. They are sometimes called a pack, but this is generally used by lay-persons who believe hyenas to be canids (members of the dog family, Canidae. They actually belong to their own family, the Hyaenidae, which is more closely related to cats than to dogs). There is also a poetic term, 'a cackle of hyenas', but this is very rarely used, much like 'a dazzle of zebras' - no zoologist would use these terms. They would say 'a clan of hyenas' and 'a herd of zebras'.
Source(s):
I used to be a zookeeper and have studied animals all my life.

A group of fox is called a "skulk" or "leash", but you'd rarely if ever find a lexical definition (which is what you're asking for) that describe the words "skulk" or "leash" on their own to mean as much, when the terms "skulk of fox" or "leash of fox" are stipulative (see: stipulative definition).
And I don't know what you mean by "reputable source for (a) definition". All definitions, or more accurately: uses of words are submitted by random people. There's no way of "officially" authenticating the use of word insofar as all uses in lexicons are simply reportative.
ontainAug 19, 2010
as someone else pointed out, Clan is the correct term.
btw skulk is in the dictionary.

@ontain, you can discover terms of venery in collections like "An Exaltation of Larks: the ultimate edition" by James Lipton, "A Crash of Rhinoceroses: a dictionary of collective nouns" by Rex Collings. Or you can, if you so choose, go to Wikipedia, search "list of animal names" and discover that, it is in fact the case that a "Cackle of hyenas" is just as appropriate as a "Clan".
dipsomaniacAug 19, 2010
Hyenas come in clans, not cackles.

That doesn't sit right with me - the phrasing, in context with Palin's gaffs. At least, from theperspective of another english speaker in another former colony.
I may have misread your intent, but I don't think I'm the only one who may have found that a sour sentiment. Some of your best friends use the word "ebonics"?Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

Am I the only one who learned about the different names for groups of particular animals in elementary school?
A "Cackle" is a group of Hyenas (it can actually a group of witches, as well)
Anyone who ridicules her for using proper terminology that they themselves haven't learned makes themselves out to be twice the idiot they claimed she was.

Yes, and the proper term for a group of hyenas is "clan". The most common term is a "pack".
The phrase "cackle of hyenas" is rarely used; even your link showed only 10k results (including references to this Palin topic on the first page). Using the more specific search "a cackle of hyenas" (to eliminate alternate usage like "the cackle of hyenas", which could be referring to their laugh), I come up with 606 results versus almost 4k for "clan" and 112k for "pack".
apackofmonkeysAug 19, 2010
"Pack" is certainly more common because any four-legged mammal can be called a "pack", and it's the default word for most people. I've never heard of "clan", but regardless, 600 cackle results vs 3700 clan results is hardly enough to call someone stupid for using the lesser-used term. For example, "pail of water" has about a third the number of results as a "bucket of water", which is only twice the proportion as those who use "cackle" to "clan", but would you allow even half the amount of vitriol spewed at someone who used the word "pail" instead of "bucket"?
tcquadAug 19, 2010
A pail of water still has over a million entries, relative popularity aside. 600 hits for an accurate and properly spelled phrase? That's highly unlikely.

Too bad, I learned this word meaning twenty years ago, at the same time as I learned "murder of crows" "gaggle of geese" etc etc. I'm actually truly sorry that you are actively trying to make yourself more ignorant by claiming that 61K people (searching without quotes) coincidentally made the same mistake.

@apack - I got this dead horse and an extra stick. Wanna hang out?
shieldwolfAug 19, 2010
Based on the fact that "[a] cackle of hyenas" has two order of magnitudes FEWER google entries than "a pack of hyenas" or "a clan of hyenas", and the term is not present in ANY online dictionary, I think this is a made-up poetic term that has pretty much 0 usage in real life.
apackofmonkeysAug 19, 2010
Really, so all those other entires that refer to a cackle of hyenas were written by Palin then? No one else uses it? The lengths to which you are stretching to call Palin stupid for using a real word are astounding. Why would I ever want to align myself which such a hateful group?
leif777Aug 19, 2010
Do you think she meant a gaggle?
ripleyisdeadAug 19, 2010
I think she was using cackle as a collective noun, as in a "cackle of hyenas". She probably refers to a group of conservatives a as a "pride of conservatives". :/
leif777Aug 19, 2010
...and most likely a "shrewdness or basketball players"

Cankle?

While I do dislike Sarah Palin and love to see her look like an idiot, I dont think this is a good example. The context in which she used it actually makes sense because a "cackle" is a group of Hyenas, therefore she correctly used it. Also digg need to get off its high horse and stop having these anti-republican articles take over the top 10. WHat happened to cool science articles, or interesting news links or funny photos involving weird s**t from Japan? Instead, you get on digg and its "REPUBLICAN DOES SOMETHING HORRIBLE AND IS A REAL DICK" and then everyone write a comment and its the same s**t. We get it, digg is a website that is mostly used by more liberal leaning people, but stop digging up every article that has something stupid that the republican party did. Im tired of it.
Im not saying I like the republican, or democratic party, just that Im tired of digg being used by people to rip on political parties. They do the same thing on CNN and FOX and I just dont want digg to be consumed by it either. THIS IS MY SAFE HAVEN, DONT LET POLITICS RUIN IT TOO!!

Disappointed that this made the top in all news when there's REAL s#!t going on in the world... Sarah Palin is a rash... let's stop scratching it.
parboAug 19, 2010
I agree on the basis that gentlemen should never discuss politics. Politics are unsightly, and unless are truly earthshaking, should likely be confined to a political corner and off my front page.
DiggIdea: Make a filter to keep stories tagged with politics, Sarah Palin, whatever, off my front page.
stochioAug 19, 2010
You can already do that.

So when she and the Republican loyalists and Tea Party activists start crowing about this or that we can call them a murder of lunatics and be entirely correct?
