alternet.org — "Massive Censorship Of Digg Uncovered," published on AlterNet Thursday & Dugg 10K times, has been picked up by hundreds of sites and quoted throughout the media. It spread like wildfire through the media and social networking sites, from ABC News and the Washington Post to film critic Roger Ebert and Digg founder and CEO Kevin Rose's Twitter feeds

Still waiting for Digg to finish looking into this; only three of them have been booted so far that I know of.
cosmicsurferAug 7, 2010
As the ringleaders remain, I see, continuing to deny the undeniable and attack the messenger instead of accepting responsibility for their actions.
But then, that is the crux of the issue - no responsibility, just denial; no accountability just immature hostile acting out; no true belief just hypocritical arrogance
maxell101Aug 7, 2010
Their ringleader is still here. I have only submitted two posts. The second one was buried yesterday. I think digg doesn't care.
stonecircleAug 7, 2010
Yes, the group is still communicating amongst themselves, and still putting out the call to bury our posts.
Closed AccountAug 27, 2010
Digg DOESN'T care. As far as I know they haven't even properly acknowledged that it even exists, even though many of these fools have multiple accounts and have returned from banning.
Maybe this redesign will keep them away.
It's certainly doing that for me.
ajajadudeAug 7, 2010
Yeah, that would be the problem: you ban them, they can just come back with different accounts. And ISP bans aren't 100% effective seeing as ISP numbers don't go with you to the grave, sorta speak.
smacksawAug 7, 2010
How about an algorithm that tracks trends in buries?
barrettandersonAug 8, 2010
When are they gonna ban novenator for doing the same thing?
smacksawAug 8, 2010
As soon as he starts promoting far-right wing stories that no one actually wants to see and suppresses legitimate stories that the vast majority of digg users come to digg for.
stonecircleAug 7, 2010
Glad to see this is getting some traction outside of Digg. It was a brilliant expose' of the Digg community's own terrorist group. This is far from over.
anomaly100Aug 8, 2010
One of their recent communications (close to the last one) said something about you getting too many front pages and to watch your submissions. What gives them the right to become the digg police?
smacksawAug 8, 2010
It's like a mob, really. Hell, a black man in the south 50 years ago could be accused of "raping" a white girl and the cops wouldn't do anything about it...along comes your hanging party of whites to fill the gap.
Clearly, voting on stories hasn't been enough and digg has been under-policed, improperly policed, or both. That's why these people found a place to flourish and grow. If the cops can't protect your business, the mob comes and offers a protection racket.
It's not their right...but we and the digg staff left a hell of an opening for these people to come in and push us around and abuse the power vacuum.
woodsjransomAug 7, 2010
Three have been BOOTED, that is enough assume that something wrong had been done. The rest are either hiding in the dark corner or don't get that they have been exposed. That republican ignore won't work in a liberal lair. The ones that get to stay will have a hard time in here unless they change their handle. Good enough for me.
pinkpackratAug 7, 2010
Yeah-- beyond banning, what is digg going to do to see that this sort of thing doesn't happen again? Time to re-think the algorythm maybe?
neognosticAug 7, 2010
Digg needs to fix their abuse department, the members of this group were reported to DIgg many, many times, and ignored.
nygenxerAug 7, 2010
I was surprised by how many of these user names I recognized from arguing with them.
So long, a$$holes!
pash1994Aug 7, 2010Submitter
Digg seems to be sitting on their hands and waiting for Digg v4 to solve their problems. This goes deeper than that. They have dropped the ball with enforcing their TOS. Unless they want Digg to lose all credibility, they need to step up and take responsibility for this. It should have already been done.
doctechnicalAug 7, 2010
The only way Digg is going to "lose all credibility" is if a serious competitor shows up and starts eating their lunch.
Now it's not like Digg doesn't have competition, it's just that there isn't anything big enough to knock it off the roost - Digg is an 800lb gorilla, and there don't seem to be any contenders for the title. Why would this be? Evidently it's because Digg is doing what it's users *like*. And that includes using a system that can be gamed, as has been demonstrated here.
So if Digg put in place a bunch of changes that make such gaming impossible, will it still be Digg? Will it still attract as many users or will people decide they don't like the new rules and go somewhere else?
That's a tricky row to hoe, and I don't envy the implementers their task.
On the other hand, I think this whole thing really is a tempest in a teapot, and aside from dropping the accounts in on the conspiracy, probably nothing should be changed.. Outside of the left-leaning Digg hivemind getting a little butthurt, what really happened here? What really newsworthy stories *didn't* make it to the front page because of these yahoos?Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
stonecircleAug 7, 2010
I'm personally a victim of this group. Many of us have seen the actual emails. Most of the emails that involved me included links to everything I posted, with the command to bury them all, even if the buriers agreed with my post. This goes WAY deeper than being censored on Digg. The vileness in the emails is off the charts. These folks took it as far as to conduct detective work on their "enemies", mining personal data about them and their families, and sharing and publishing that information. Their daily exchanges were appaling.
noupsellAug 7, 2010
their compulsion to test the limits of what they can get way with at digg will be their ultimate undoing
bobcat7407Aug 7, 2010

stonecircle, don't say you're a "victim", say you're a "target" instead. We all know what they like to do with liberals who give themselves the "victim" label.
anomaly100Aug 8, 2010
The emails? I've seen them. Believe me, they exist and there is more proof than my laptop could hold. I had to use another computer to store it. Seriously, the memory in my laptop could not store ALL of the evidence,
Look at it this way, Digg Abuse has seen them and we are still here submitting posts about it. Do you believe they would let us do this if it was unfounded? This has been going on for too long. We do not have anything to prove to every denying Conservative on here. It will happen in time, but know this...they had some great people banned by reporting en mass comments that were made after they *intentionally* said things via a script that we thought out beforehand in order to piss them off enough, then report them one by one.
bobcat7407Aug 8, 2010
@Anomaly100
So why not post the most incriminating ones and let people see them? I've seen plenty of claims, and I'm open minded to them, but I'm tired of accusations that have no proof. That is the MO that I have seen novenator use over and over on this site, and as far as I can tell this whole thing is just more of the same. You do have something to prove since you are making these accusations. It's really ridiculous that I have been buried by four people for simply asking for proof.
cosmicsurferAug 7, 2010

“focused on launching digg v4, but we're looking into this.. Massive Censorship Of Digg Uncovered http://bit.ly/cES8Yd”
emailowndmeAug 8, 2010
What they need to do is do what facebook does and have 1 account 1 person, connected to a cell phone. Let them try to reset their phone numbers.
As a victim of this, I'm more amused than anything, but if you want people not to game the system there must be real things keeping them from doing it, not honor or garbage like that.
My feeling is that most of these people were paid to do this, several of them write for the examiner, at least according to one webarticle I read. They must be held accountable, and this can't happen again.
bepeaceAug 7, 2010
Digg should let them stay but give their buries no weight. That would be fitting justice, impotence would drive them mad.
stonecircleAug 7, 2010
I like the way you think.
maxell101Aug 7, 2010
No, they shouldn't stay because their Digg status was so important to them that staying is what they want. They don't give a damn about the new digg because the bury button is not there. Bettverboten's main reason for being here is getting her nut case posts seen. She said, "Why should we give them the power? She's a rodent.
maddoktor2Aug 7, 2010
That's an insult to rodents.
smacksawAug 7, 2010
I disagree because they have other methods.
quirkopatra had an interesting M.O. - in an article that was likely to be popular, she would flood it with comments at the top. Most people would just get sick of her comments, not bother to bury them all and move on. If they can comment, they can spam the discussion in different ways.
seltaeb4Aug 27, 2010
I think impotence already drives a lot of them mad, if you know what I mean.

A Guardian UK article claims digg has lost a third of unique visitors in a month earlier this year. One must wonder if this is the result of the censorship that has been going on.

I stopped posting to Digg for a while, when it became apparent that my stories were being mindlessly buried. The only people that were seeing my posts were my friends, and though I'm thankful for their support, it felt like I was only singing to the choir. Though we've tried individually to bring attention to these bullies, the most that ever happened was that these folks would get "permanently" banned from Digg, only to "reincarnate" themselves with a new account, to continue their old tricks.

A coterie of people systematically burying a certain class of articles, particularly those from a small range of sources, should be readily detectable by algorithm. Thus any political or commercial or religious or simply malicious conspiracy could be rapidly unearthed even if people have established accounts under false premises. After proper inspection by an administrator who has been alerted to suspicious activity, those accounts could be, as one comment noted, rendered impotent rather than being terminated. Thus, the account holders would not readily become aware that their plot has been discovered and neutralized. Another fix for this situation is not to delete postings that have been buried, but to retain them in reserve. If those articles are found to have been targeted by a burial society, then they can be unearthed and re-posted in a protected status, from which they could then gain popularity on Digg. A competitive site that implements such policies could gain market from Digg, if Digg is too slow to regain credibility.
noupsellAug 7, 2010

I saw the front page of the Yahoo! group myself, and it appeared exactly as it did in the screen grab. The group was deleted within half an hour of the original submission.
By idly searching around, I found another site called 'The Liberal Heretic', which had hundreds of tweets by lizzbet (aka bettverboten) instructing users to bury articles. The site seemed to have fallen into disuse about six months ago, and a recent tweet told readers that the action had moved over to the Yahoo! group. There were also instructions for using a proxy to evade bans, etc.
This site was taken down within three hours of the original posting. The blog section is still there, but the tweets and member page are gone (the site is now reporting a database error). These people have gone to quite some length to hide the evidence of their gaming the system. Here are the usernames I was able to grab before it went down:
Members list:

Some familiar names in that group... gbudavid in particular is an odious, bigoted prick.
Here in the shout feed we have lizbett (aka bettverboten) giving marching orders and advising users to get behind a proxy:
http://www.theliberalheretic.com/shouts_new/index.php
If you follow the links, you can see the articles they sabotaged.
A list of the users in this group.

Thank you for noticing your mistake and admitting it. I really appreciate that a lot. Mistakes happen, apology accepted.
If you look at my comments, all I have been asking for is proof. If it's as bad as everyone says, then why haven't some of the emails been posted as proof? Also if you look at my comments you will see that I am getting buried on almost every one, even though I am just asking for proof. This is the sort of thing that makes me have a hard time believing the accusations. People willing to not only blindly believe this, but also bury someone who asks for proof.

You have 5000 followers on twitter. You promote upcoming stories to them, making most of them become popular, but at the expense of other upcoming stories. The comments and diggs/buries in said stories become monopolized by your overwhelmingly liberal following. Conservative comments in those stories never stand a chance.
I'm not saying it's wrong, but it's no different than what DP was doing, and you are saying that that is wrong.

stonecircleAug 8, 2010
It's totally different. When Shouts were down away with, people moved to Twitter to promote their posts. What the difference here is, the Digg Patriot group took it a step further, telling everyone to bury our posts, regardless of the topic, or whether they even agreed with our post. DP participants were told to silence us -- period. They were told to nullify our presence on Digg. The emails are rabbid, and the personal attacks are horrendous. I was a victim, myself. I saw in black and white a list of my posts, and instructions to BURY BURY BURY.

Promoting your submissions you agree with and actively cyber-burning books is very, very different. I don't care if I get dugg down, I just don't like my reading to be censored thank you very much. That stuff I like to decide for myself.
barrettandersonAug 8, 2010
"That stuff I like to decide for myself."
This is Digg. How do you think it works? The community decides what you'll read and not read. Either it's OK to promote such actions outside of digg or it isn't. There is no fundamental difference between the bury and digg buttons; they just do two different things.
timelessbwAug 8, 2010
You always pick your reading materials based on what someone else promotes? I most often pick my from the new section, often being the first to digg up a submission. Most of the time the submitters are not people I am familiar with. I do also check my friends comments. Limiting the new section is cyber-book burning no matter how you would like to spin it. I have almost never buried a submission I did not agree with. People should decide for themselves. There is a huge difference between the bury and digg buttons, no matter how you like to justify and deflect.
barrettandersonAug 8, 2010
"You always pick your reading materials based on what someone else promotes? "
On Digg, YES. How do you think this site works?
timelessbwAug 8, 2010
"On Digg, YES. How do you think this site works?"
Well, I think people usually brouse through submissions and see what might interest them. Then comment on them. And digg them up if they agree with them. I would really think the submissions bury button would only be used for things that seriously offend you. Left or Right. But not to bury things you have never even read because your friends tell you to. That requires thinking for yourself, when did the right stop doing that?
novenatorAug 8, 2010
Barrett, I promote a lot of things I find interesting on Twitter, but that is the sort of the point of that social platform, to share things. It would be against the rules to call for a bury on there, which I have seen people get banned for in the past.
Even that wouldn't be nearly as bad as what DP was doing however. They were so good at censoring content, they could almost do it at will.
barrettandersonAug 8, 2010
"They were so good at censoring content, they could almost do it at will."
That's a lie.
" I promote a lot of things I find interesting on Twitter, but that is the sort of the point of that social platform, to share things."
Ok, DP was sharing articles that they found interesting in a negative sort of way. I fail to see the difference. And if it's actually wrong, why don't you link to the articles that you are promoting instead of linking to digg?

that'd be neat.

I didn't predict it would make such waves. :)

Rattington Post posted a rebuttal... I left them a love letter.

Hopefully someone like Rachel Maddow will pick up on this and expose it. I want to know if these people are connected to any PACs/astroturf groups. The time to strike is now. If there is malfeasance to expose, we must strike while the iron is hot. Are these people like some wacky militia, working on their own? Or are they taking marching orders and getting funded from a powerful source? The fact some of these people are still around is interesting. They must be getting something to keep at it.

I hope digg 4.0 or whatever has some sort of certified id system, like facebook with phone numbers. I don't want real id connected to my digg through facebook or whatever, just the same kind of protection I have with my facebook. Making people activate their accounts through picking up a phone, sending a text message, or whatever will break the back of the people who use hoards of fake accounts to buryspam people they disagree with.

umm to anyone who thinks facebook is secure you have another thing coming. i can go get a prepaid cell phone with a new number for $10.
bam new account.
oh but what about the ip. well there is always a proxy or force the modem to change ip's or even tor.
if they want it secure then they remove everyone's privacy. i am not a nut about privacy. i am a nut about security. Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

A lot of these folks are human worms with very little in the way of life (social or professional) to speak of. The only joy they get in life is to try to suppress the voices of reason and logic. These fools can't even DEBATE. That's my main problem. There's room for everyone everywhere so long as you can stand up for your opinions and back them with FACT.
Time and time again, these martyrs just bury and run. And, obviously, they were trying to troll and get responses that would get people like me banned. (I was on the 'target' hit list).
Then you see the idiots defending themselves on video and you start to feel sorry for them. They look exactly how you'd THINK they'd look and they sound exactly how you think they would sound and that's really, really bad.
They do it on CNN and MSNBC...they will troll anywhere and everywhere because they don't have a politician who speaks for them. They'll defend the right to their last breath but ask who they support and it's a huge mix of random people. THE RIGHT HAS NO LEADER OUTSIDE OF GLENN BECK, who is a confused alcoholic and an uneducated martyr. Very much like the people who believe the s**t he spews.
HEY COWARD MARTYRS, stick around but DO IT BY THE f**kING RULES. And why not debate once in a while instead of just burying stories that speak to logic and science and reason and truth?
Instead, you come across as the hit and run, uneducated martyring cowards that I've claimed you to be over the years.
Get lives. Rent friends.
A lot of them.
