So...if Palin/Bachmann run in 2012 and lose, the tea party will cease to exist?
assumethefetalAug 17, 2010
I knew a girl that cried because Obama got elected. I just stared at her blankly. She literally thought life was over for whatever reason (to this day she refuses to talk politics around me, because she says I know more than her and she doesn't keep up with anything. So she basically hates him because all her republicans friends hate him) A circle of friends spreading disinformation and hate mongering.
This amount of crap that spreads in election years with smear campaigns is utterly disgusting, so I cant say this surprises me.
phydeaux70Aug 17, 2010
I know a lot of people who cried when Obama is elected, but for a different reason.
They are still waiting for Obama to come and pay for their mortgages, gas in their tanks, and give them money for nothing. You'd think they won the lottery that day.

You know them phydeaux, or are you just thinking of that one woman in the video we all saw?
curtis2011Aug 17, 2010
To be fair, there are stupid people on both sides of the fence.

phydeaux70,
What? You mean n*ggers? Cause n*ggers love free s**t. The lottery, and orange soda... right? Go back to FR, partisan retard.

No. They'll be less likely to kill themselves. Read.
nightember79Aug 17, 2010
Nope. It's a story about politics. Facts aren't important here.

"determines that presidential election outcomes directly influence suicide rates among voters" ??
Directly?
phydeaux70Aug 17, 2010
Great...I am 100% fine with this.
If the people on the fringes of these political groups decide to off themselves, I only see a benefit of the common good as a result.
If the GOP wins the next election and 200 wacko libs decide to end their life, it's just one less headache in the world.
I would say the same thing for the far right, but they believe in God and suicide is a major no no in most relgions. Also, since the GOP has controlled the White House all but 10 years since this study began, and 8 of those being Clinton, I am guessing that most of the people that decided to end it all, were nut job liberals.

thisismywarAug 17, 2010
probably not, most right-wing nut jobs say they believe in god because they have to use something to mask of horrible they truly are and if they want to run for office it's the only way you will get those votes. Underneath they are all just greedy capitalists and if a party comes in that won't allow them be that way I say a few hundo will be tasting the business end of their own shotguns. Thanks for exemplifying the state of political discourse.

Didn't read the article before making your ridiculous comment, did you? The article clearly said suicide rates fall more (are lower, if your little brain didn't understand) in areas where the preferred candidate lost then in areas where the preferred candidate won. Just thought I'd let you know before you make yourself look like any more of an idiot.
thisismywarAug 17, 2010
no need to read articles when you are just trying to rile people up
powderedtoastyAug 17, 2010
Not surprised at all that someone with your opinions didn't bother to read the article...
thisismywarAug 17, 2010
not surprised at all that someone who would leave this kind of comment can't spell surprised, doesn't change the fact that I f**ked up the wording of my first reply but still. FEAR GRAMMAR NAZIS Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
artosrcAug 17, 2010
How far gone does one have to be to consider suicide if their candidate du jour fails to out-slime his opponent? It just goes beyond anything I can think of. I could understand extreme sadness on behalf of other things, but a political event?
smiertspionamAug 17, 2010
Let me get this straight, so people are so crushed that the candidate that they voted for didn't win that instead of moving to another country, they decide that they'd rather just die. Am I reading that correctly?
Whatevs. Fine by me.
Shorter lines in the supermarket.

"However, counter-intuitively, suicide rates decreased even more dramatically in states where the majority of voters supported the election loser"
janineeeAug 17, 2010
No. You are not reading it correctly. Herbcat seems to be the only one in this comment section with reading comprehension.
powderedtoastyAug 17, 2010
If you read the article it only mentions a decrease in suicide rates, and they get better when the majority votes against the winner. Way to be a compassionate human though...
smiertspionamAug 17, 2010
Never claimed to be one, sport ;)

So if there is ever an Gay asian atheists that wins an election the red states are going to be like lemmings running to a cliff.
checkpleaseAug 17, 2010
He's got my vote. Gay Asian Atheist in '12!!
treehugger87Aug 17, 2010
Yet another commenter who needs to read the article first. If you want to kill off voters in the red states, you want the Palin/Hannity ticket to win in 2012.
falconearAug 18, 2010
No, rtfa...only red staters living in blue states will be running off the cliff.
soc7Aug 17, 2010
Your problems are temporary. Suicide is permanent. My take on this is that if you are unusually susceptible to these things, win or lose it's important to ones mental health to have a solid support system of people who more or less share your overall viewpoint during times of major political change. Everyone loves a winner and misery loves company.
appleofdischordAug 17, 2010
Apparently no one read the article. It says that suicide rates fall in a state if the majority's choice wins. It also says that suicide rates fall even more if the majority's choice loses, possibly due to social cohesion.
What I don't understand is... doesn't that mean that suicide rates just fall no matter what in an election year?
atarioAug 18, 2010
"Prior research on this topic focused on whether the election process itself influenced suicide rates, and found that suicide rates fell during the election season."

2) correlation is not imply causation
3) study was done from a desk using faulty data
4) study does not control for other, more influential factors
5) you dun goofed

I'd consider suicide too if Sarah Palin was elected VP.

So.... people commit suicide if their candidate loses? These are people whose lives are so shallow and pointless that they would rather not live on?
I do believe this is Darwinism in the 21st Century.

Did you read the article? Comprehension not your strong suit?
powderedtoastyAug 17, 2010
Hey idiots, the suicide rates go down. This article doesn't say anything about people killing themselves when the guy they don't like wins. At least f**king skim the article before posting.
mgraves81Aug 17, 2010
pssshaawwww. Reading is inconvenient to the mind!
falconearAug 18, 2010
No, what it says that if your guy suicide rates go down if the state voted for your guy. So to paraphrase the article, "It's better to be Democrat in Mass. when Bush wins than a lonely dem in a red state."
gridbreadAug 17, 2010
This is where Bush was a uniter.
jkmyoungAug 17, 2010
So to sum up: if you vote with the majority, you're more likely to be sociable with the majority of people around you -> less chance of suicide.
If you vote against the majority, you're less likely to be sociable with the majority of people around you -> higher chance of suicide (regardless of election).
But since there's always more people in the majority, overall suicide rates go down. I don't think this is really news.
flanativeAug 17, 2010
Bachmann, Palin suicide...
tsuruchibrianAug 17, 2010
"Presidential Election Outcomes Directly Influence Suicide Rates, Study Finds"
I don't think the person who wrote the title of this article has a good sense of what the word "directly" means. This would be what I consider a classic case of an indirect effect.
This is similar to how many people use the word "literally". They will say stuff like "I literally died when I heard that".
rjb1124Aug 17, 2010
OK, so let's be clear: The rates decrease in states where the majority's favorite wins, and they decrease even more in states where the majority's favorite loses.
Given that, then we can save lives by having more presidential elections. Have one every six months or so, and maybe we can prevent suicide altogether.
ghostalkerAug 17, 2010
I'll admit I was pretty bummed and disillusioned when Bush got the election handed to him by the courts (count every vote? yeah right, not in this democracy), but I don't think anyone actually committed suicide over it.
The recession he caused, oh yeah, the numbers keep adding up.
falconearAug 18, 2010
It's a known fact that Bush winning re-election was a factor in Hunter S. Thompson's suicide.
