alternet.org— Right-wingers claim Obama and Democrats across the country are waging a war on religion -- and of course, conservatives are the civilian casualties along with the rest of America's white Christian majority.

The only war on religion is people turning away from the churches either because they recognize the hypocrisy in them or because they are finding they don't need faith to get by.
I'm one that can't stand most churches. Too many good followers in the walls that don't follow outside them (or even in them at times..)
I don't go to any churches, so I get asked a lot of pointed questions from many about my faith. If you are a good christian why don't you go to church?
I just tell them the truth: My church is from the ground to heavens, so I am always at church.
seems to upset a lot of folks.. they want you to go to a building and be a good christian in a building full of idols and images..

Although I am sure it's a much bigger deal where there is much less diversity and pretty much the only thing to look forward to during the week.

There is no war on religion. There is a religious war on competing religions, and non believers. There is no bigger danger to human existence than religion.
It's a shame to think how many people have dedicated themselves to studying religous texts, when they could have dedicated themselves to advancing science.
If it were not for religion, we would have cures to many diseases today. Religion is the antithesis to human survival, and that's by design. Which makes it a disease.
Too bad, you never bother reading a history book. Most of today's scientific and medical advances were sponsored by the Catholic and other religions. I agree that religion can be used as an excuse to commit very serious crimes against humanity. The people who do this are usually called extremists and use religion as a tool to further their own goals (or their organization's). Unfortunately, many extremists are also very charismatic and can sway others to join their cause.
However, most religions teach peace, love, or at bare minimum tolerance at the core of their structure. When those beliefs are followed, religion can also be one of the best things for humanity.
Much like anything else, religion can be viewed as a tool that can be used for good or ill.
While I agree with Alternet on the last four, the first is being solely set up by Republicans to appeal to religious people. I think that is stupid on the [R]'s part, but Ill explain.
Whats really wrong about what Obama did was mandate the exact package a business has to adopt. Not this flim-flam about religion for an emotional response.
As the article points out, most business' already fit the standard, so it was entirely unnecessary.
The Government has no right telling Sony or Panasonic what all cables need to be included when they buy a Tv [some people may already have them, the cost will passed on, its not the place of the government...etc], just as they have no right declaring what all services people have to buy voluntarily from any other business [in this case, a post-menopause woman who has no need for contraception].Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
"just as they have no right declaring what all services people have to buy voluntarily from any other business [in this case, a post-menopause woman who has no need for contraception]."
no one is forcing them to buy it. the only "forcing" is that all medical insurance providers must OFFER IT not for people to get or use it.
if they will never use it, they will never have to pay for it or pay a co-pay for it.
this isnt a law forcing people to use contraception. not in the slightest.
People have the free will to shop where they want. If they want contraception [as many do, obviously, because even most catholic services offered it already] they will either get their current providers to carry it or move their business.
As the case was that most places already carried the service, the move was entirely superfluous. Why?
To show off to the liberal academia?
The market requires more maturity of its leaders, else you end up with laws that seem entirely nonsensical looking back [10 years from now] in a good case, or ones that end up doing harm to the flow of the system.
Few things work better by adding additional parts that play no obviously beneficial role. Most liberals are aware of how evolutionary mechanisms work.

Most religions offer different rewards in the afterlife, this is a foundation of deceit, and their leaders know this, so deceit is widespread and accepted tool in religious societies.
Conservatives in this country often confuse religion and politics... when they don't get their way on political issues, they whine about religion. It's all theatrics - they are so desperate to create drama because it takes attention away from how out of touch with reality the modern day Republican party has become.
I'm actually tired of that certain group thinking somehow they are 'right with God' by supporting Republicans like Santorum. It keeps giving us poor options from the right. I still would love to see Ron Paul (also not a favorite of this group).
I wish they WOULD declare war on religion. I'm sorry, but there is zero real evidence for [insert your geographically-accepted invisible sky-daddy here]. Hows about you guys pay some taxes for a change like all the other big businesses?
Ughhh...It's Christmas, dammit! Why do we have to be all inclusive and like...nice or whatever to people different from us? And another thing, if the stores at the galleria all have "holiday" sales instead of "Christmas" sales, we will totally forget about the lil baby Jesus and what the true meaning of Christmas is! Why is our religion under attack?! We're so oppressed. ;-(
They use it as a distraction. This is (sadly) why Santorum has a better chance than Ron Paul. If only logical solutions were at the forefront of people's minds.
'your generation', whatta laugh. Today's liberals are so busy making themselves look and sound moronic they are actually causing greater support for religions and the Constitution. If there WAS a war on religion, religion would loose.. their faith vs a bullet ends up being Bullet 1, Religion 0. Perhaps thats why they are so fearful of war?
There is a war against religion going on, but it's not coming from Obama. And when I say war, I simply mean a war against irrationality and false logic. No one needs to be or should be hurt, and I personally wouldn't wish that upon anyone.
The majority of posts here bear witness to the reality that religion, specifically Christianity, and even more so Catholicism, are being attacked in thousands of ways each day. The attacks are more and more brazen, the attackers beginning to leave the dark holes and shadows they hide in, confident that they are about to win at last. Obama, one of them, thought he could finally break the ideological back of faithful Americans, divide and conquer. He was wrong, and he just picked a fight he can't win. If Obama loses the election, this moment will be considered one of the reasons. Even Joe Biden, perhaps the dumbest man in Washington, understands this.
Evidence of 'self-delusion' displayed remarkably well. You clearly are part of that group that believes 'good Christians' are likely Republicans. I know you hate the fact that Obama is a Christian (being that he's all Socialistic and stuff). But really, your post just reeks with Delusion.
As for Job Biden being the dumbest man in Washington, lets' put a bet on that. Sure, Republicans want to demonize. But you then point out one politician who actually has Experience and is closer to 'middle America' than almost any. Dumb.
"...believes 'good Christians' are likely Republicans."
No, I believe "good Christians" are likely conservatives. You can not be a Christian striving to live the gospel and at the same time deny the natural law or the nature of man.
It would be nice if the Christians Obeyed their bible and showed us God through their good deeds and lives and didn't tell me that I have to Obey the commandments that God asked them to Obey....Even Jesus said he didn't come to rule the world.
Why can't Obama understand the simplest of concepts. If poor liberal women can't afford birth control pills, they can just let their johns pay for them. Then they can suck and f**k their hearts out.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
Why do liberals always deny they are doing what they are doing? It makes them look even more stupid than their actions themselves. Every election year, liberals decide to attack the Catholic Church and its teachings despite the fact that these attacks have always failed (at least for the past 2,000 years).
Pointing out flaws in their ideals and pointing out scientifically proven evidence isn't an attack, it's an enlightenment. And to say these "attacks" have failed is false. Yes, the church is still around and going strong, but that's because they've had to adapt to the progression of ideas, albeit slowly. The theory of evolution would have gotten you "purified" a few hundred years ago. Now the church admits it's real.
You are confusing discussions of science with disputes over morality. Liberals have argued against the moral teachings of the Church for 2,000 years and failed.
The Church has accepted scientific advances when they became justified through observation, testing, and scientific logic. That the Church rejects 'junk science' until it becomes real science is the one complaint liberals have and keep repeating. It doesn't stand before and it doesn't stand now.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
liberals have been arguing that the church is not the sole holder morality, and, because of its absolutism, in fact a pretty bad one most of the time. (dark ages, inquisition, crusades, witch burning ect.)
and the church hasn't accepted any science until the evidence is so overwhelmingly strong they can no longer avoid acknowledging it.
it took them to until the last decade to acknowledge Copernicus was right!
if we'd taken that approach we still still be living in the middle ages.
GG is right, you ever wonder why the Left never comments on our submissions? They know the way to popularity is not only through diggs but also comments. I try to add as few as possible, letting them have the final word in most instances.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

as opposed to pathetic novenators phony war on atheists.
Regardless. we have freedom OF religion in this country. Not freedom FROM religion. Telling Catholics they MUST go against their beliefs is the very definition of the violation of the first amendment.
If you don't have freedom from religion, other people can force their religious beliefs on you, you f**king retard. Why should I even have to point that out? What happens when Christianity is no longer the dominant religion? What then, numbnuts. You NEED freedom from religion in order to have your own religious beliefs.
Look at this this way, you ignorant simpleton - the same laws that prevent teacher-led Christian prayers in schools are the same laws protecting your children from having to recite Muslim prayers in school. Do you f**king get it now? I'm sorry I'm coming across as being so hostile, but here I am, an atheist, trying to defend YOUR freedom, the freedom to believe what YOU want to believe, and you're f**king pissing away that freedom in the wind.

Jesus didn't want to pay his slaves, they got paid in the afterlife, this scam gave birth to Christianity...
austinjameshereFeb 9, 2012
Conservatives in this country often confuse religion and politics... when they don't get their way on political issues, they whine about religion. It's all theatrics - they are so desperate to create drama because it takes attention away from how out of touch with reality the modern day Republican party has become.
JustSayNoPartyFeb 9, 2012
But wait, aren't all Good Christians Republicans? Surely someone can't be a Christian and also support the devil (Democrats).
Need I add the Sarcasm tag?
stevanoskiFeb 11, 2012
I think it would be difficult if you follow all the Dem. Party precepts including abortion but it certainly could be done.
JustSayNoPartyFeb 12, 2012
I'm actually tired of that certain group thinking somehow they are 'right with God' by supporting Republicans like Santorum. It keeps giving us poor options from the right. I still would love to see Ron Paul (also not a favorite of this group).
gkiltzFeb 9, 2012
Essentially mirrors the Christian right's outlook on, and hostility toward Islam!
jaketyson85Feb 9, 2012
I wish they WOULD declare war on religion. I'm sorry, but there is zero real evidence for [insert your geographically-accepted invisible sky-daddy here]. Hows about you guys pay some taxes for a change like all the other big businesses?
MusicManGPFeb 9, 2012
War is unneccessary. We know they're making it up, they know they're making it up. It's just to convince them to give up the charade.
Closed AccountFeb 8, 2012
Ughhh...It's Christmas, dammit! Why do we have to be all inclusive and like...nice or whatever to people different from us? And another thing, if the stores at the galleria all have "holiday" sales instead of "Christmas" sales, we will totally forget about the lil baby Jesus and what the true meaning of Christmas is! Why is our religion under attack?! We're so oppressed. ;-(
paulneyFeb 9, 2012
It's not a war on religion. It's a war for the support of the seperation of church and state. And freedom of ALL religion (not just Christianity).
And I use "war" VERY loosely.
strongwingsFeb 9, 2012
They use it as a distraction. This is (sadly) why Santorum has a better chance than Ron Paul. If only logical solutions were at the forefront of people's minds.
neotechniFeb 9, 2012
We'd be better off if they did get rid of religion.
Just make it illegal to teach it to minors. No one would believe that crap once they get an education anyway
MusicManGPFeb 9, 2012
That kind of thing isn't appropriate for government to do. We've got to convince people ourselves. My generation gives me hope.
vbdonFeb 9, 2012
'your generation', whatta laugh. Today's liberals are so busy making themselves look and sound moronic they are actually causing greater support for religions and the Constitution. Keep up the attack!! The churches can use the extra $ for the poor and needy.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
MusicManGPFeb 9, 2012
I don't need to attack anything, it doesn't have anything to stand on in the first place. Dismissing religious beliefs takes no effort whatsoever.
breadfredFeb 9, 2012
vbdon - why are using 'liberal' as if it is a curse? Why this anger? Is that what the church teaches you? I thought a good Christian would be happen to listen and discuss alternative viewpoints.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
badsyntaxFeb 10, 2012
If there WAS a war on religion, religion would loose.. their faith vs a bullet ends up being Bullet 1, Religion 0. Perhaps thats why they are so fearful of war?
charlesdkraussFeb 10, 2012
There is a war against religion going on, but it's not coming from Obama. And when I say war, I simply mean a war against irrationality and false logic. No one needs to be or should be hurt, and I personally wouldn't wish that upon anyone.
chassupFeb 9, 2012
The_SovereignFeb 9, 2012
Eventually, they will have to give up their childish superstitions. When they finally do, we will welcome them with open arms :)
JustSayNoPartyFeb 9, 2012
Evidence of 'self-delusion' displayed remarkably well. You clearly are part of that group that believes 'good Christians' are likely Republicans. I know you hate the fact that Obama is a Christian (being that he's all Socialistic and stuff). But really, your post just reeks with Delusion.
As for Job Biden being the dumbest man in Washington, lets' put a bet on that. Sure, Republicans want to demonize. But you then point out one politician who actually has Experience and is closer to 'middle America' than almost any. Dumb.
chassupFeb 9, 2012
"...believes 'good Christians' are likely Republicans."
No, I believe "good Christians" are likely conservatives. You can not be a Christian striving to live the gospel and at the same time deny the natural law or the nature of man.
stevanoskiFeb 11, 2012
Exactly

gimiesomeFeb 9, 2012
It would be nice if the Christians Obeyed their bible and showed us God through their good deeds and lives and didn't tell me that I have to Obey the commandments that God asked them to Obey....Even Jesus said he didn't come to rule the world.

vbdonFeb 9, 2012
Why do liberals always deny they are doing what they are doing? It makes them look even more stupid than their actions themselves. Every election year, liberals decide to attack the Catholic Church and its teachings despite the fact that these attacks have always failed (at least for the past 2,000 years).
This only goes to show how sick and lame liberal ideology continues to be.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
brewbeauFeb 9, 2012
Pointing out flaws in their ideals and pointing out scientifically proven evidence isn't an attack, it's an enlightenment. And to say these "attacks" have failed is false. Yes, the church is still around and going strong, but that's because they've had to adapt to the progression of ideas, albeit slowly. The theory of evolution would have gotten you "purified" a few hundred years ago. Now the church admits it's real.
vbdonFeb 9, 2012
You are confusing discussions of science with disputes over morality. Liberals have argued against the moral teachings of the Church for 2,000 years and failed.
The Church has accepted scientific advances when they became justified through observation, testing, and scientific logic. That the Church rejects 'junk science' until it becomes real science is the one complaint liberals have and keep repeating. It doesn't stand before and it doesn't stand now.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
countess666Feb 9, 2012
wrong on both counts.
liberals have been arguing that the church is not the sole holder morality, and, because of its absolutism, in fact a pretty bad one most of the time. (dark ages, inquisition, crusades, witch burning ect.)
and the church hasn't accepted any science until the evidence is so overwhelmingly strong they can no longer avoid acknowledging it.
it took them to until the last decade to acknowledge Copernicus was right!
if we'd taken that approach we still still be living in the middle ages.

i point out what's wrong with the article or how its manipulative, how its presenting the facts wrong, how the facts contract it entirely ect.
of course all i get is a lot of thumbs down, and hardly ever a worthy reply.

liberals are the ones who fought for a end to slavery, for equality, for woman suffrage, against segregation. and now gay marriage.

i am NOT a Christian or even religious, and i will fight for equal rights whenever I can.

Regardless. we have freedom OF religion in this country. Not freedom FROM religion. Telling Catholics they MUST go against their beliefs is the very definition of the violation of the first amendment.

leodinFeb 9, 2012
