I came here just to bury binky...and this submission. I realize that we have the same thought process -- xkcd is not something that needs to be submitted to digg every time there is a new one. I don't know whether to digg you up or down. I also came to bury this story because I agree with binky that xkcds do not need to be on the FP every time but all this binky hate is just silly. His meme is funny (in my humble opinion) and it makes a good point.
In the end, it is all ironic and we're being counter-productive because, as far as I understand digg's system, commenting helps a story reach FP versus just clicking 'bury' and leaving.

That comic really irritated me. I really hope he was being sarcastic when he wrote that one, since a rotating reference frame is accelerating and therefore not inertial. Newton's laws therefore can't be applied to it, so you can't say the centrifugal force exists since it's derivation relies on Newton's second law.

Centrifugal force is real. You get on the roller coaster and you feel it. Anything else is whining about semantics and assorted douchebaggery. Call it a pseudo-force, or an manifestation of inertia, or a fudge factor, but it's a real physical effect.
Carry out the same math in the Lagrangian or Hamiltonian formulations, and you get similar effects, you just aren't calling them forces anymore. s**t, do the stuff brute force with D'Alembert's Principle, and you still see the s**t. It's as real as real can be - it just so happens that the simplistic formulation of Newtonian mechanics is poorly equipped to handle it, leading to the type of confusion that has trapped you.
