The sad thing is, despite all the terrible stuff you see on the news about the NYPD, such as planting drugs on people, and pepper-spraying calm, non-violent people, I've still had much better experiences with police in NYC than anywhere else I've ever lived.
They are usually polite and competent at their jobs, unlike the assh**e yokels who work for small town departments. I didn't even know a cop was capable of not being an assh**e until I moved out of the South.
But the good cops need to stop letting bad cops hide behind the "Blue Code of Silence". It makes all of them look bad when they let the bad cops get away with murder (literally at times).
By and large, New York City cops are great at their jobs - polite, courteous, responsive, knowledgeable and friendly. In my experience, they've been almost exclusively fantastic. There are some bad apples, I'm sure, but I have not had any experience with them personally.
I dislike when people post the videos blaming the police for arresting protesters or accusing them of underhanded tactics. I'm sure there have been instances where the police were overzealous - I'm also sure that there have been instances when the protesters were the same, but the videos were clipped or edited to leave those pieces out, or shot from perspectives that don't show why they acted the way they did.
Neither side of that "conflict" (and I use the term loosely) is blameless. All the same, it would be nice if people recognized what a fantastic job the police have done. Reports of force used by police, warranted or not, are minimal, with no reported fatalities or major injuries despite the contentious nature of the protests and the "expressive" nature of the protesters.
You know what's almost as bad as perpetuating stereotypes about a particular ethnic group? Perpetuating stereotypes about a particular professional group.
I know it's really easy to make generalizations rather than taking the time and effort to make evaluations of individuals, but surely you can see how your comment is tantamount to the sort of prejudice we're meant to imply you're opposing.
In Atlanta almost all cops are black and they are mostly assh**es to both white and black people. Actually Atlanta cops are not so bad as the other types you find in the rest of the state, Georgia has got to be one of the worst, or just the south in general. Not only are they generally under educated, they also make s**tty wages compared to the north, don't mess with them and god forbid you get caught doing something outside the city limits.
The NYPD is probably the best large-city police force in the world. An overwhelming percentage of them truly embody their motto of "Courtesy, Professionalism, Respect."
In most of the videos of the pepper-spraying, we see the white-shirted commanders doing the instigating. I'm willing to bet they got excited because the commissioner let them out of the office and back onto the streets. There needs to be more accountability with regards to abuses of power.
But still, I'd take the NYPD over any other urban police force in the country, if not the world.
sadly, that's the things. It's the s**tty ones that make the news? The media doesn't exactly hype the "super nice cop who went out of his way to help someone!"
"Breaking news out of the rural backwoods of the southeast, a white police officer stopped an African American individual for speeding, and let the gentleman go with a warning. More at eleven."
I am sure there have been many good cops in NYC. But you never hear the news media report on them. Just like you never see the news media report good things about the Occupy wall-street people.
Anonanimal wrote - "But the good cops need to stop letting bad cops hide behind the "Blue Code of Silence". It makes all of them look bad when they let the bad cops get away with murder (literally at times)."
Exactly. There are good police officers out there. But when they cover up for the bad ones just because they belong to the same fraternity, then it makes them ALL look bad.
I agree with what you say, it is like that everywhere through all walks of life, some good, some bad. I think this movement is going to help highlight the good and the bad.
I went to OWS this weekend dressed a hell of a lot more like a protester then someone who's cop friendly and the cops where BY FAR more controlled, and more respectful of others than the protesters were...
I walked my kids through the "occupation" with my sister who's been arrested at multiple protests against WHO, G8, and RNC...
Several protesters were combative towards us, "listening in" to and then butting into our conversation, 2 made joking offers of drugs directly to my kids (8 and 10) scaring the s**t out of them...
Cops were all in very good moods considering how much overtime they are prob. working and especially considering the large number of total d**k h**ds they have to deal with.
Having said all that I'm 100pct behind the OWS movement, but some of the participants are doing their best to piss off people who are willing and eager to listen to their "message" much less cops who very well may think that they are just A-holes wasting their time.
I'd also say it's safe to say that minimum 20pct are their to party and hang out.
WAY too many complaints about money and jobs from folks smoking top dollar weed out of expensive blown glass pipes IMO.
Also for all the claims of the cops doing everything they can to F with the protesters... I could have arrested literally 60 people by myself for drug possession... so they're definitely not doing everything in their power to arrest the protesters.
I've seen so many protesters harassing people just because they are dressed fairly nicely (maybe assumed to be a Wall Street employee?), lol. Some are just being pot stirrers. Where's the news on this? hahaha

Anyone have any tips on who this cop might be? I feel the community should reward his behavior. Maybe we could get more cops like this with that type of incentive.
One of my best police experiences was in Canada; I and a few friends were in Montreal for a music festival. One night once of my friends got so drunk that we were carrying her back to her hotel room (she could sorta walk, we had her arms on our shoulders, you know "that helping your drunk friend home" walk).
When we got to an intersection, a Montreal cop stopped and asked what was happening, but didn't know much English; I old the officer "elle on boit"; then pointed down the road to hotel and said "hotel demi kilometre". (I know a little french, but not at a conversational level)
The officer then backed up her car to block the intersection, with the light bar on, and effectively closed each intersection so we could have protected crossing of the road while carrying our friend back all the way back to the hotel.
When we got to the hotel door, I waived to the officer and said back "merci beaucoup!"
Context, f**kers! This was during Gay Pride, not during the G12. Do a search for Officer Bubbles to see a lil' of what happens when the dicks on the force come out. Fortunately, there's not a lot of 'em.
