Locals still chuckle at the fact that tourists still ask "What time do they turn off the falls?"
michaelccoleDec 16, 2010
Locals may laugh at the question but do they know that every night the falls are turned down?
After dark half of the water going to the falls is diverted to make electricity, check it out
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Niagara_Falls
keinelust90Dec 16, 2010
Of course we know that... How do you think we supply a good bit of the nation's power?
michaelccoleDec 16, 2010
Good point, the question's still funny though, and you don't need to tell them the rest of it.
funnylittlemanDec 17, 2010
Who is we? Does Niagara Falls belong to you?
DirdromeDec 17, 2010
The "we" you ask about would refer to the "locals" of the Niagara Falls area. Also, nobody claimed ownership of anything. True, keinelust90 implied he was a local which I suppose you (and anybody else as ignorant as you) could read as implying he owns land in the area but that's far from certain. He could rent. Either way, work on your trolling skills because you fail.
funnylittlemanDec 18, 2010
Alright. Looks like I hit a sore spot. I don't know what I said that could have made you so snappy, except implying that neither your actions nor your permanent residence near the falls contributes to powering the better part of the eastern United States.
I do appreciate you pointing out my negligence. Rest assured I will store it among my most prized and valuable advice.
DirdromeDec 18, 2010
Eh had a bad day so I was PMS'ing anyway. I'm curious about your opinion however. If it's not the locals of the Niagara falls area, working in the power plant based there that contributes to the East coast power grid then who does? The locals of Uzbekistan perhaps? Do they commute?
letterqDec 17, 2010
Half of Niagara Falls, one of the most photographed tourist locations in the world, was dry for six months in 1969, and these are the only known photographs of it? That doesn't make any sense at all. There should be thousand upon thousand of pictures of this, including file photos taken by professional photographers!
anomaly100Dec 16, 2010
Yep, I'd say it looks a tad bit different. It looks like they've stumbled onto some historic Roman ruins.
firefish45Dec 16, 2010
I love stuff like this.
wadester2489Dec 16, 2010
So they got video of a helicopter fly-by of the site, but not the sweet juicy action-packed part where they burst the dam and let the water flow through again? Son, I am disappoint.

The walls and slides are so symmetric. Water does have a good sense of art. :)

We saw this on Woddy Woodpecker when the park ranger kept trying to prevent Woody from going over the falls in a barrel and to stop one of his attempts, he turns the falls off.

Looks like a scene from a war... Make that the Penines...

Ah the late 60s, when we did crazy s**t like this just because we could.
pabbsyfaceDec 16, 2010
No big deal. Water under the bridge.
divenDec 16, 2010
The pictures are interesting, but why is this news? It looks like the site is just sensationalizing a pretty boring story. Just look at the title - "The day Niagara Falls ran dry: Newly-discovered photos show the moment the iconic waterfall came to a standstill.
A - it wasn't Niagara Falls - just the much less impressive American Falls.
B - It wasn't "The day..", the article states that the falls were dry for several months.
C. Although these particular pictures may be newly discovered, the falls were dry for several months! There must be thousands or even millions of nearly identical photographs in shoe boxes around the world.
amaoicanDec 17, 2010
Good day Mr Killington.
funnylittlemanDec 17, 2010
If it makes you feel better, you can think of it as The (First) Day Niagara Falls Ran Dry.
madbadgerDec 17, 2010
"it wasn't Niagara Falls - just the much less impressive American Falls."
Actually, the American Falls is part of Niagara Falls. You're thinking of the Horseshoe Falls.
bigglespipDec 16, 2010
Anyone know where the falls would now be if they were never turned off or the face maintained?
breadfredDec 16, 2010
My guess would be that the falls would have packed their bags moved to Himalaya's.
columbusgeekDec 16, 2010
Probably at her mothers sulking.

looks better with the water turned on

That's what she... never mind.
Hello_KittieDec 16, 2010
Neat! Canadian side is where its at though ;)
goweigusDec 16, 2010
We need a better school system in the US because I had no idea there were 2 falls not far apart like that.
Also I should probably start watching more television and movies. I think I remember a simpsons episode where some Canadians on boats and Americans on boats were arguing over it (but they only made it seem like there was 1 fall and half of it was to each side)
gnateyeDec 16, 2010
slowly i turn, inch by inch, step by step, NIAGRA FALLS

Why is this news? There have already been plenty of photos shown of a dry Niagara Falls since a long time ago.
rethreadDec 17, 2010
Look, about the tri-state water wars...
We'll forget about the supersoaker if you leave your balloons at home. I know this will work!
readparseDec 17, 2010
Yeah, but they didn't block off the Canadian falls, which is what most people think of when they think of Niagara Falls. Still interesting, though.
vinetariDec 17, 2010
Canadian Falls > US Falls!
