Wow. My cable doesn't even HAVE Syfy and I hate it now.
fibonacci121Aug 1, 2010
It's almost like the Sci-Fi channel has been infected by some sort of intergalactic parasite; It's being slowly devoured from within, the host's normal behavioral patterns have been drastically changed, and if this continues for long enough, there's a serious chance it could explode into a half dozen miniature (and s**tty) replicas of itself.
pakerAug 1, 2010
The only thing that infected the Sci-Fi channel is idiots.
jasoncoxAug 2, 2010
Shh, don't give them any more movie ideas!!

Yes, anyone who would make their business a laughingstock by naming it "SyFy" should have been fired for merely suggesting such a stupid maneuver.
Stupidity is overrunning everything, folks. There's no "M" on MTV anymore. How many current viewers even know what the M is supposed to stand for?
Pathetic.

Face it: They're giving Americans what they want. That's what businesses do. And particularly these days, business go for as much money as humanly possible.
Americans are pretty dumb. Overall, they like the CGI bulls**t with no-talent actors, no plot, no complexities that can be filmed and edited within a few weeks.
It's sad. It's pathetic. But it works for them and the proof is in the pudding. Give Americans fluffy bulls**t and they'll eat it up and encourage other networks to do the exact same:
Remove good content that might cost to air and replace with bulls**t content that you've made yourself that can be consumed by a 4th grader as well as an American adult. Since they think on very much a similar level.
SyFy sucks CaWk.
If I had a cat (I don't) I wouldn't leave it on that channel while I'm gone for the cat to be subjected to. So glad this is what the average American is amped on watching these days.

kirzenAug 2, 2010
Pfft, they'd seriously need more vespene gas for that.
billytidahoAug 2, 2010
Part of the reason they changed to "SyFy," was due to issues trademarking and merchandising the term "Sci-Fi." The new name may still be stupid, but there was a reason behind it.
In an interview, a SyFy exec described these movies as "polarizing content," meaning that those who loved these movies LOVED them, and those who hated them HATED them. I don't think anyone ever seriously thought that SyFy thought these movies were made-for-tv gold. I imagine they are fast and inexpensive to produce, and achieve fairly high ratings based on their cheesiness.

Thank you!
sirbetaAug 1, 2010
God, it was like a flood gate opened in my mind when I read "TechTV has mutated G4"
That steaming pile they call television now isn't a tenth of what it was when it was TechTV.
meedAug 1, 2010
More like used it as a living organ donor, comcast bought the network for about two things.
1. Techtv was available on way more subscription tv services.
2. X-play (or Extended Play as it was known originally), techtv's only gaming centric show which easily was better than the entire G4 channel.
But, if it wasn't for this disaster, we wouldn't have Revision3 and TWiT, not to mention Kevin turned into the face of web2.0 companies.

hitmanjustinAug 2, 2010
TechTV was so awesome, I could watch that non stop, I remember seeing G4 an my cousins house and I thought it was cool too cuz it was just pure video games, so obviously when they sated the G4 takeover I was excited.. but now... its just pure garbage... junky soft porn shows with hosts that are force fed Viagra.
biglouAug 2, 2010
ZDTV!
starscream45Aug 2, 2010
I never had TechTV, but I actually like G4. Olivia Munn is hot, Allison is hot, Morgan is hot. I like video games and the E3 coverage is nice, Attack of the Show isn't bad, BUT I never watched TechTV so if I had watched it, I might be more apt to dislike G4 probably. And I understand that a lot of their programming in the slower time slots is crappy (lots of Cops and Cheaters). You gotta admit the new anime Marvel shows that are exclusively coming to G4TV look pretty good though.
So go ahead and bury me or plan my "extermination," (ja9an) I get it, G4 killed a good station (never saw it), and they have terrible programming during slower time slots. But the other stuff is not THAT bad, I can think of a lot worse channels than G4. Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
falconearAug 2, 2010
I like G4, and watch AOTS on occasion. Morgan Webb was actually one of the few people to crossover from Tech TV. Olivia, for better or worse, is slowly transitioning off of G4 as she goes on to whore herself for network television. I'm not really enjoying her on The Daily Show either...
diggsmckenzieAug 2, 2010
Who cares if the hosts are hot or not, you have a whole internet of naked ladies to fap to. I care if they are actually good hosts or not (crazy, I know). I can't stand watching AOTS because its hosts are so god damn annoying. Olivia really just shouldn't talk...
The thing I really hate about G4 is that everything on it just feels so...lowest common denominator. 90% of the humor on it is just like "Vagina! Get it! Its funny because its sex parts!"
Ugh...we really don't need a second Spike TV.
starscream45Aug 2, 2010
@DiggsMcKenzie
"Who cares if the hosts are hot or not, you have a whole internet of naked ladies to fap to."
You really don't care if the show you are watching has a host who is butt ugly and hard to look at? Not in the least? I don't think they are bad hosts either. It's all subjective. As Falconear pointed out, Morgan Webb is from your beloved TechTV, you hypocrite. She is on AOTS a lot more than Olivia Munn is right now anyways.
You need to lighten up. You are judging the whole station by one tv show and your dislike for Olivia Munn. They are getting the Marvel anime series' coming soon. They play some decent movies a lot such as Fight Club. As I said before they cover E3, they have Xplay which came from TechTV, which isn't that bad and usually doesn't have stupid jokes or anything. I don't LOVE G4, but it's a channel I will always flip through to see what is on. I don't know what kind of channels you watch but I'd be curious. Most of your non-premium cable channels aren't anything that much better than G4. Almost anything is better than reality TV stuff. Is that your thing? Are you more of a MTV fan or something boring? If you want great programming all day long you go to HBO and Shotime.
diggsmckenzieAug 3, 2010
X-Play is the only good show on the whole channel IMO. Morgan Webb and Adam Sessler are the only two I actually like. I kinda miss when they were more joke-y, as opposed to their more "serious business" format, though (they were stupid, but in a lovable way).
And I focused on AOTS because its their main draw.
Here's a list of their shows from Wikipedia:
* American Ninja Warrior
* Attack of the Show
* Campus PD
* Champions of Champions Elite (monthly special)
* Cheaters (syndicated)
* Cops (syndicated)
* Human Wrecking Balls
* It's Effin' Science
* Ninja Warrior
* The International Sexy Ladies Show
* Totally Outrageous Behavior
* Unbeatable Banzuke
* Whacked Out Videos
* Wired For Sex
* Web Soup
* X-Play
There is nothing there that would make me stop and watch.
Funny you bring up MTV. I hate MTV, and I think I hate G4 so much because it reminds me of it. Very frat boy. No thank you.
starscream45Aug 3, 2010
How does a geeky channel that is usually about video games and gadgets have anything that reminds you of a frat boy? Or MTV? All the frat guys I know watch MTV and ESPN. I love how you never mentioned what you actually watch, probably because it's a show here and a show there. There aren't too many channels that have something you're going to watch all of the time. Most people, me included, will watch a show on one channel and change it to something else that is on. I like a handful of shows on G4. You missed Movies That Don't Suck, where they actually play a lot of movies like Fight Club, Half Baked, Dazed and Confused, 28 Days Later. SUCH BAD MOVIES!!! They also have live coverage of events such as E3 and Comicon. If you are like me and work on a computer all day and you come home, the last thing I want to do is get on my home computer to find out what happened at E3 or Comicon, you just wanna turn on the TV and find out. Everyone else will probably disagree but I actually like Ninja Warrior, it's quirky and kind of dumb but it's kind of entertaining. You hate AOTS with a passion but I like "Around the Web" when they play all the top viral videos of the day. I have seen many videos that I liked that either never appeared on Digg or appear on Digg a day or two later. "Gadget Pr0n" isn't bad either, they give their opinions on either cell phones or computers or some other kind of gadget and if I am interested in that product I will go online and research the product myself. It's not that big of a deal. X-play is great, it's nice to see reviews on games. And I don't know what you are talking about with Adam and Morgan they do skits and goofy stuff all the time.
I don't know about you but there is not much on, at least where I live, during that time slot. NOTHIING. I'm not going to stop watching it just because a bunch of TechTV fans on Digg told me not to.
diggsmckenzieAug 3, 2010
I don't really see what other shows I like to watch have anything to do with anything, but for what its worth I like Futurama, Chuck, and 30 Rock. I've also kinda started getting into Burn Notice...
But anyway, G4 is hardly a "geeky" channel. The only shows that could be considered "geeky" would be X-Play and AOTS. Maybe Web Soup I guess because it has to do with the internet.
Cops is geeky? Cheaters is geeky? Whack out videos is geeky? Ninja Warrior is geeky?
Do you know what a geek is?
I mean, Ninja Warrior is an ok show, but not when it makes up HUGE chunks of your programming schedule.
As for their event coverage, they do some things right and some things horrible. I did like how they showed the E3 press conference, but everything fell flat. The "commentary" from the various hosts after was very bad and annoying. I didn't watch the Comicon stuff, but I imagine it'd be the same.
And I don't care if it plays some movies every once in a while, I've seen all of them and have most on DVD. I can watch them at any time. I want good ORIGINAL CONTENT. X-Play is the only place where they deliver.
starscream45Aug 3, 2010
Actually I said I was curious what channels you watch. Then I said "I love how you never mentioned what you actually watch, probably because it's a show here and a show there. There aren't too many channels that have something you're going to watch all of the time."
You said, "I don't really see what other shows I like to watch have anything to do with anything, but for what its worth I like Futurama, Chuck, and 30 Rock. I've also kinda started getting into Burn Notice..."
I can see how you were confused, sorry, but my reasoning for asking was I wanted to know what channels you thought were so incredibly awesome. Every channel has bad programming, or at least programming that doesn't interest you.
You hate G4 with a passion, that is clear. As I said before, I don't LOVE G4. I just like to watch it every now and then. You really hate AOTS that is also clear, but I don't think it's too bad, my wife and I will watch it. My wife thinks Olivia is a hot. :) But hey, it's all subjective. I hate onions, my parents love 'em. It's all a matter of taste and opinion. There's nothing more to say about G4. Let's agree to disagree.
And since were name dropping shows, Dexter is the best, Spartacus is incredible (hopefully there's a second series, there's supposed to be), South Park (especially the older ones), 30 Rock is good (that was one of yours), Hung is actually pretty good, I am starting to get into that show. Then of course I like the Daily Show, Colbert, Bill Maher and all those political shows.
But Spartacus: Blood and Sand if you haven't seen it, watch it on Netflix (instant streaming), unless you have Stars channel, it was an amazing first series! It's like 300 meets Gladiator. But at times, especially the season finale, it made 300 look like a Disney movie!
diggsmckenzieAug 3, 2010
Well I guess we'll just call this one even.
Still won't get me to watch G4 though :P
starscream45Aug 4, 2010
Agreed. But maybe I'll get you to watch Spartacus. :) Seriously, it's awesome.

Eureka has started off stronger this season, which is good. I liked the show at first, but it kinda started getting in to a funk. I like what they are doing this season so far.
Warehouse 13 has potential.
I'm on the fence about Haven. So far it isn't too bad, so I'll keep watching. I miss the days of epic Friday nights of shows like BSG and Farscape. The current Friday night lineup isn't bad, but it is nowhere near its peak.

Syfy is morphing into the paranormal channel. Now it even has some s**tty reality tv show about some psychic woman and her daily life.
Today is the first day in a long, LONG time that it has shown real Hollywood science fiction movies instead of made-for-TV crap. Sunshine, Serenity, Fifth Element ... hell, if Syfy showed movies of this caliber every weekend then I'd have hope in them again.
Making made-for-TV movies every so often isn't bad, though. I like a very small handful of movies they have made, like Mutant Chronicles. Sure it is just a B movie, but not all B movies are bad.
chitiwokAug 1, 2010
My ex-girlfriend was really into Ghost Hunters for some reason. The day I finally agreed to sit down and watch it with her was the day I decided she was soon going to be my ex. I knew was into the show before I watched it, but there was no way I could take anything she said seriously after seeing how bad the show was and how much she actually believed the non-proof they were producing.
apzdsxAug 2, 2010
I don't see many long-term relationships in your future if you break up with people because they don't share your particular tastes in television shows.
chronopublishAug 2, 2010
@apzdsx: You can tell a lot about a person by what TV shows they watch. Differences in taste are OK, but if someone is "really into" an awful show, it is a legitimate red flag imo.
Also, in Chitiwok's situation she did not just treat the show as entertainment, but actually believed what she was seeing was real. I consistently find that people who treat TV as anything other than entertainment to be unbearable to be around.
chitiwokAug 2, 2010
Things weren't going too well at that point anyway, and it was more of a straw that broke the camel's back deal. I can't have a serious conversation about any topic of importance with somebody who takes what goes on on Ghost Hunters as solid proof that spooky ghosts run around haunting houses. I would be way too tempted to counter any questionable point she made with "And are you going to prove that with a random bumping sound on a tape recorder you set up?" which pretty much spells instant fight if I don't resist that temptation. Being able to treat the person I'm with as an intellectual equal is huge for me, so at that point it was game over.

I want Toonami back. The goold old days, with Tom and his ship. Dragon Ball Z, Reboot, Gundam Wing, Outlaw Star, Samurai Jack, Tenchi Muyo, Blue Submarine No. 6, Big O, Zoids, Clone Wars, Batman Beyond, Teen Titans...
I honestly think that was one of the last Pinnacles of TV, alongside TechTV (Pre-G4 merger or branding, "The Screen Savers") and Sci-Fi (Sliders, Stargate, Special Unit 2, Babylon 5, Quantum Leap, Tales from the Crypt). In fact, if SciFi could buy the Toonami brand and retool their entire lineup, they might just become my favorite TV channel.

I think they should get rid of them too, but they're quite appropriate to the channel's genre.
themediatorAug 2, 2010
The problem I have is that viewers seem to believe that by watching a T.V. show about bigfoot, lochness or ghosts there is a chance that before the credits roll they will see unprecedented, empirical evidence that such things exist.
Now comes the conundrum I cannot fathom.. what makes these people think that if there were factual proof of such things that the mainstream society wouldn't already be aware of their existence..
People are confusing.

jeremiah89Aug 1, 2010
It seems several cable networks have done this in recent years. Rather than stay true to the niche they had in mind when they started, they've mutated to mostly reality crap, and just overall shows that have nothing to do with their roots whatsoever. It's no wonder getting entertainment from the internet is becoming so common. No one needs 50 or so channels showing the same, generic programming.
bloodwineAug 1, 2010
The only channel that has stayed true to its niche is Comedy Central. Granted, comedy is a very big-ass niche that spans so many other genres.

History Channel? You mean Hitler Channel? Well, at least WWII is actual history, but it was funny that almost every time I flipped past History Channel back in the day I saw Nazis, Swastikas, or Hitler flash across my screen.
txaggie08Aug 2, 2010
Yeah, for old TV shows like Dick Van Dyke and the lot, I increasingly find them on Netflix.
phucktardedAug 2, 2010
Who here isn't guilty of watching Pawn Stars, or American Pickers (though only to laugh at how ambiguously gay those 2 are) now and then.
Sadly, I think to find out whose behind this corruption of cable TV programming all we need to do is look in a mirror.
tech42erAug 2, 2010
So much for history on the History Channel: http://www.collegehumor.com/article:1804922
sabachAug 2, 2010
To be honest I kinda like Axe Men, the rest of them suck out loud.
sfhandymanAug 2, 2010
When MTV stopped showing videos, we could go to VH1 and see them there. VH1 is now... I don't know what it is but it has nothing to do with Video Hits 1.
evanftAug 1, 2010
All this did was remind me how much I miss Battlestar Galactica, God frakking dammit.
bmorrowAug 2, 2010
*Gods
drraouldukeAug 1, 2010
They should have rebranded it as"s**t" rather than "SyFy". It would have been more honest and it's a real word.
cptbuckAug 1, 2010
I miss the reruns they used to do. It was basically campy 60/70/80's Scifi marathon all the time. Six Million Dollar man was epic.
And it also inspired my ever-passionate love for the Twilight Zone.
bloodwineAug 1, 2010
This past month and August seem to be made-for-TV movie s**tfests every workday. I've looked at Syfy's calendar in September and the trend seems to continue. I hope that they didn't stop the workday TV show marathons. They were doing it rather faithfully up until June-ish.
Twilight Zone, Outer Limits, First Wave, Dr Who, 7 Days, Special Unit 2, Jeremiah, Earth 2, Highlander Raven, The Greatest American Hero, etc.
Some shows were good, some were cheesy, and some were awful. Overall, it was fun watching them in the background as I worked.
sixgunAug 2, 2010
ditto. Those marathons, Eureka, and Warehouse 13, are about the only things I watch on syfy anymore.
sirbetaAug 1, 2010
Not
sirbetaAug 1, 2010
Not quite sure if theyr'e saying Stargate: SG-1 was part of the downfall of Sci-fi but dare I say that was one of the few shows worth watching back then.
Your results may very, but I loved that show and while I'm glad it's finally over, part of me is sad that it's only remaining in Stargate Universe, the ultimate "hold my hand, I'm so sad, nothing is happening or going to happen. Lets just talk and yell about our feelings"
bloodwineAug 2, 2010
I loved SG1, and I also enjoyed SGA, although I know I am in the minority on that one. I do not like SGU, though.
parrappaAug 2, 2010
I enjoyed SGA as well, just not quite as much as SG1. I think most people feel that way about it.
shandromandAug 2, 2010
I remember watching the first few episodes of Universe and thinking to myself that they should have called it BSGU instead. It was obvious where they got their writers from, and it had almost none of the typical SG flavor. Maybe they'll do better with the next season, but I'm not holding my breath.
tenioAug 2, 2010
I feel the channel was at its prime when it had new episodes of SG, BSG and SGA all in 1 night. I loved it.
arvvvsAug 2, 2010
Well I think SGU has potential and had a couple of good episodes (Human and Lost) and a decent finale. The season 2 trailer seems to have upped the action portion so i'm actually kinda excited
hschronicAug 2, 2010
they need to do something with SG:U it is getting so bad it is about to be taken off my pirated TV shows list.
The season finale was pretty good, but unless they actually do something on some of these worlds where they go to this thing won't make it to S3 oh wait it is SciFi (WTF is this SyFy s**t 2 f**king letters more is too much? You trying to be edgy like Radio Shack calling themselves "The Shack which is just as f**king dumb) so they will renew it,
joejitsuAug 2, 2010
Does Syfy still have Lexx?
philbertAug 2, 2010
Sadly no, but you can see it on Hulu.
shandromandAug 2, 2010
Same for IMAN
admiralwoofAug 2, 2010
And to think they used to air MST3K who would make fun of the junk they air now. Oh the irony of it all
balancedAug 2, 2010
I believe I once was watching SciFi and they showed the same movie on MST3k and 'regular' within the same 8 hour period. No irony about it either... It was just the regular MST3k rerun and the regular cheap vaguely sci-fi movie they used as weekend filler.
This was... years ago. MST3k was still in production, I think.
I believe it was a movie about a guy turning into a snake.
parrappaAug 2, 2010
Why all the Stargate and BSG hating? I feel like those two shows are what define the channel. Without those cult classic sci fi shows, SyFy wouldn't be what it is. So I say bring on the Stargate and BSG spin offs, they're better than the nonsense movies I always see playing on Syfy.
Also, I must be the only person who doesn't care at all about the name SyFy. I kind of like it. But maybe that's just the inner web designer in me because I like the purple SyFy logo.
bloodwineAug 2, 2010
You forgot about Farscape. I think that show is what gave them a huge boost and solidified their existence back in the day. Without Farscape, I think SciFi Channel would've crashed way before it did.
I don't mind spin offs. However, SGU is like the bastard child of Stargate and BSG ... and the kid does not live up to either parent.
philbertAug 2, 2010
Farcrap, Fartscrape, whatever, sucked.

they gave starbuck a sex change. 'nuff said.
johnomazzAug 2, 2010
Damn straight. I love Stargate and BSG. Warehouse 13 is also another great scifi show. Sanctuary is also pretty good.
dsanonlineAug 2, 2010
What's sad is everything said in this article thing was completely correct. =(
bloodwineAug 2, 2010
My cable provider never had it, but what ever happened to the Horror channel?
civicsi99Aug 2, 2010
On another note : AMC to air The Walking Dead in October!
bubba9999Aug 2, 2010
in on the joke, or is a joke?
jasoncoxAug 2, 2010
The only things I watch on "Syfy" these days are Caprica and SGU. Other than that, I don't touch the fraking network with a 10 foot pole. #BringBackSciFi

You should give Warehouse 13 and Eureka a shot. They're at least imaginative and worthwhile.
firespray1138Aug 2, 2010
Yet as of today, SyFy has aired Serenity, Predator 2 and right now, The Fifth Element is starting.
I believe the end of the world is about to happen.
princednaAug 2, 2010
Fox News? They're still sticking with their culture of lies and misleads well enough.

Why do you feel the need to s**t all over this thread? We've been able to keep politics out of this so far, then you gotta come in here and fire your political projectile diarrhea all over the place. Eat a dick.
princednaAug 2, 2010
My bad. I was trying to leave a reply to the guy who said "only pue channel left" but I guess it didn't end up as one. My bad for being a noob, bury me to hell.
snoogsAug 2, 2010
Wrong thread.
cyberdactylAug 2, 2010
The Sy-Fi channel boils down to five parts or components.
The pure s**t Saturday night features.
The pure s**t wrestling.
The ultra silly chasing Ghosts nonsense.
The reruns of run of the mill to damn decent big screen reruns.
And lastly, the above average serials, i.e, BSG, SG1, SGA, etc.

No s**t! Funny, I seem to see it the same way. But Wait! There's more.
Mutated giant c**kroaches attack the world.
Mutated giant ants attack the world.
Mutated dinosaurs attack the world.
Mutated cats, dogs, chickens, rats, birds, bee's, fathers, mothers, uncles, xxxxx, xxxxx, xxxxx.
Thank goodness for the B- Mars movie with Tracy Lords. Well at least it inspired me enough to download some porn of Tracy being invaded by a big ol one eyed monster. Now that my friend is real SciFi.
toxicshokAug 2, 2010
The worst part is all these B movies have literally exactly the same cast of characters. The Scientist, the Female Scientist, the Military Guy, the Group of College Age Students who are allowed to assist in a military operation despite having zero qualifications and just having the luck of being at the right place at the wrong time.
asianwasteAug 2, 2010
Personally I think SyFy has made an ever increasing treasure trove of material for a revival of MST3K. They can rip mainly on their own movies which would alleviate a lot of the licensing pains the show had during its time.
fieldhockey44Aug 2, 2010
Is that the T-1000 in the Mansquito picture?

Of wow! Did you hear that? WHAT WAS THAT? Did you feel that draft? It suddenly got cold in here.
I'm getting out of here. God how I hate those stupid ghost shows.

Why was RuPaul in the original SciFi compilation?
xyritheonAug 2, 2010
I was completely pissed when they dropped Farscape.
bytecolorAug 2, 2010
Harpies, the retarded Baldwin's masterpiece.
louiszwuAug 2, 2010
I remember when it first started. I thought to myself, "Finally". As noted above, I really like Eureka & Warehouse 13, but the rest of the time, it's just filler. Bad filler. You can tell they don't care by all the pseudo-scientific twaddle they air (Ghost Hunters).
ihateclownsAug 2, 2010
A lot of people, like me, complain about syfy. But they need to make money. When 3/4 of the population of the US only wants to sit in front of their TV and drool while Wrastlin' or "reality" shows are being beamed into their minds, what do you expect? I hate the trend but there's not a lot I can do about it.
twodollarsAug 2, 2010
BUT IT'S NOT REAL WRAAAAAAAASSSLIN!!
neutron7Aug 2, 2010
Wrestling? what the f**k
sjbdallasAug 2, 2010
At first is was like "Hairpies? What kind of monster is that?" Then I realized my mistake.
signa91Aug 2, 2010
In the montage video, there were clips from the movie "Apollo 13"... Either they put them in there to look "space-y," or they're saying Apollo 13 never happened...?
bracomadarAug 2, 2010
I know now why my grandparents didn't even want a TV.
mhf03Aug 2, 2010
This is all so true for nearly every single station offered by cable, which is why I don't pay for it anywhere. I just rely things like netflixs and hulu for tv shows I am actually interested in.
morg666Aug 2, 2010
That article was way longer than SyFy deserves. The channel has been dead to me since the dropped MST3K.
