And I didn't think they could top their first one. Silly me.

I guess I saw it around the 301 view mark. I guess that makes me an early adopter! I didn't expect the guitars..

Guitars was the best part. Awesome work these guys do.

Really glad OK Go had a hand in this. They are the best at music videos.
ophelloFeb 6, 2012
Cool concept, but totally a gimmick since there's no way they could have either recorded in one take, or gotten that kind of sound quality on that run (too much vibration and air blowing.)
I prefer their "real" takes where the idea is simple and it isn't re-edited together.

Stunt Driver with clever camera angles to hide the fact that OKGO isn't actually in the car. Also, they dubbed music onto the video since the actual course music sounds awful. It's a nice gimmick and all, but just isn't very good.

Ok Go actually did ride in the car and Damian Kulash was behind the wheel. Filming took place on a remote canyon ranch near a highway somewhere between L.A. and the Mojave desert. It took four days to film and numerous takes if things broke off from the car or things didn't sound just right.
A look behind the scenes...

Post-Production...
leland1Feb 6, 2012Submitter
Yes, agreed, of course -- there's post-production and a measure of audio sweetening done on all music videos. In the "making of..." article, OK Go is in the car during the filming. That part was not fixed.
On mixing the audio:
"We’re still trying to figure out what we got and what we didn’t,” he (Damian Kulash) says. “We will certainly have to goose it. If a microphone didn’t catch a piano, I’m not going to feel guilty adding back in a little bit of low end so you can hear it. I will start feeling guilty if the whole thing is fake, however.”
michaeljinFeb 6, 2012
Meaning that the sounds you're hearing aren't the sound that were actually made by the car, but rather recorded in a studio and synced to the video in post. It's not a matter of "adding back in a little bit of low end". It's about replacing it completely.
That's also pretty much how every music video is.
mtownFeb 6, 2012
I'm sure SOME of the sounds where legitly made by the car. The overhead chimes and the longer chimes sounded most authentic because not every one was perfectly in-sync, and the car occasionally missed some.
But yeah, of course they are going to fill a lot of things in during post production. If they didn't record the piano part separately, it would have sounded awful because the of every note sounding weird due to the doppler effect.

These guys are incredible... mad geniuses...
paultripFeb 6, 2012
why?
swarbsblogFeb 6, 2012
Are some of you mad?? Don't get me wrong, I'm a big fan of these guys. I can listen to "Here It Goes Again", White Knuckles and End Love over and over and over, I love these guys. But, this video bugged the s**t out of me. The OK GO I've come to know would of made those instrument hits from the car "bar" for real. They would of worked the whole thing out for real. As far as I'm concerned, this is them becoming less original and more commercialized... I blame the Muppet's!!Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
