"The therapy took two years, and it’s certainly pricey enough that you can be sure the insurance companies of the world will lobby hard to make sure it never gets beyond being classified as “experimental.”"
So sad.
bfmorganFeb 9, 2011
Let's only hope this terrible plague is cured soon.
darthmeatloafFeb 9, 2011
Big Pharm has a vested interest in treating rather than curing.
Why would they ever want to produce a drug that completely eliminates something that they have been making so much money off of?
Closed AccountFeb 9, 2011
It's awfully cynical, but it's true. Cancer has become an incredibly profitable industry unto itself.
darthmeatloafFeb 9, 2011
Indeed. And as cynical as my statement was, it's blatantly obvious how true it is. If you have any friends that are nurses, ask them if they've ever worked a cancer ward. They'll likely have tons of stories about withheld treatments (because they were too expensive)
laborerFeb 10, 2011
So who's vested interest is it to have both treatment and cures, if it is not the corporations? If Pharma cant meet humanities needs due to its own design, then a new engine must be created.
It obvious that it is the people who have a vested interest in curing HIV and AIDS. Why would the resources of Earth belong to anyone else?
Instead, humans will have the right to put off expensive treatment until their death or debt. Just because we dont see the reason in public ownership and interest.
audiomodderFeb 10, 2011
The people....aka, the government. but we can't have that kind of "big government"
norman619Feb 9, 2011
We have never cured a viral disease ever because the virus mutates. Any "cure" we develop will be rendered useless in a short time as the virus mutates into strains with are immune. This is why there is no cure for the common cold and the flu. I don't expect HIV to be any different.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

That's not actually how it works, despite how much people like to think so. Big pharma has an interest in making a profit because they are obligated to as corporations. Their actual goal is to produce the most effective drugs that can affect a broad range of candidates. Producing a cure for cancer doesn't help if it only helps 5% of cancer victims. Something that only mitigates cancer, but affects 40% of cancer victims is far more practical and is an unfortunate reality of combating diseases.
Claiming phrama is in it for profits is convenient and is avoiding finding cures is specious logic, and frankly just ignorant. Having know people in the industry, and that I've worked for a very well established not for profit research institue (in IT), I can say the not-for-profits have to use the exact same tactics as for profit pharma companies. It's sadly a numbers game, which is an ugly model, but when you have people in masses suffering you have to address the needs of the majority as fast as possible. Hopefully none-of us are every put in the position to have to make such decisions.
A friend of mine who works for big pharma actually has a job where she tests their existing products, whether medical or cosmetic medicines, against all known medically significant bacteria and diseases, to map the effects and determine what other treatments and cures may be derived from existing drug products. She told me if their test criteria and drug list were to be frozen today, her crew still could not complete their testing in her lifetime. It's extremely complex, lengthy, and daunting to just test drugs that existing against medical conditions that are fairly well understood. Finding an actual cure to a disease is as difficult as building a spaceship and flying to Mars and back.
Good luck.
darthmeatloafFeb 10, 2011
At no point did I say that they are avoiding finding cures.
Here:
Drug A - TREATMENT DRUG
Cheap/easy to produce
Helps 40% or more of people affected by condition X
Recipients must take drug for the rest of their lives
Drug B - CURE
Expensive to produce
Cures 5-10% of people affected by condition X
Finite number of doses required
Pharmaceutical companies opt for producing 'A' because it's more cost-effective and just happens to help more people.
That much I don't fault them for. My issue is that Drug B is often (intentionally) stalled at the experimental stage rather than going into production. Why would a pharm company dump more research funding on a drug that effectively has no return on investment? It would have to see development on the level of current vaccines in order to ever become profitable, and that would take decades unless they accidentally found a way to cheapen production.
I'm aware of the complexities of testing even what the pharm companies already know about. I'm aware of the even greater complexities of testing NEW drugs. As long as Pharmaceutical companies are publicly traded and answerable to shareholders, the overwhelming tendency will be to favor treatments.
Money talks, but shareholders scream.

Alzheimers has been in existance long before HIV was discovered. Years ago it was dementia, or senility, or hardeningof the arteries. A rose, is a rose, is a rose........................................
blackjackjesterFeb 9, 2011
One positive side effect to this horrible disease is how hard organizations are pushing for birth control in third world countries - preventing the populations from exploding more than it already is.
Imagine how many MORE people would be dieing due to disease and hunger if aid groups couldn't use it as a platform for promoting birth control.
Sad, but true.

All that is great scam for the profit of pharmaceutical companies. HIV, I mean... not AIDS
autokadFeb 9, 2011
im not sure HIV will be cured even in the next 20 years. We'll just start accepting being able to 'live a full life while HIV positive' as a cure
dfrankzorFeb 10, 2011
I agree, but if we can live a full life with it without negative side effects isn't that a cure?
doodlemasterFeb 10, 2011
No it's a fancy band-aid you're still carrying the virus and thus a threat to the populace.
qeffectFeb 10, 2011
If i remember right, current treatment supress the spreading of the virus, thus also minimizing the risk of being infected. Women with HIV can get HIV-free children, or not?
doodlemasterFeb 10, 2011
no nothing prevents the spread of the disease save not coming contact with infected fluids.... and children being born hiv free is unrelated to treatment....
qeffectFeb 10, 2011
According to this, what you say is not correct
http://www.thebody.com/Forums/AIDS/SafeSex/Current/Q213098.html
qeffectFeb 10, 2011
It seems that the risk of being infected by someome that already has HIV is low anyway. See the table in the upper part
http://www.thebody.com/content/art1094.html
Sleeping (once) with 10 infected girl would yield a lower than 1% chance of being infected...
Couple that with drugs supressing the virus, the risk is really very low...
Not advertising any unsafe practice here, but these figures are somewhat surprising (for me).

"the answer could be as simple as pumping up your body’s immune system."
Now combine it with this post:

"Recent research on nine swine flu survivors revealed that the infection had caused all their immune systems to go into overdrive"

theres already been a cure. colloidal silver. silver was anti-virus before modern antibiotics.
o76923Feb 10, 2011
It is an anti-viral treatment but it isn't particularly effective.
meninostongueFeb 10, 2011
Anti-viral and antibiotic are two totally different things. More importantly though, colloidal silver is a scam. It has no proven effectiveness and is potentially harmful.

American pharmaceutical companies are now in lines with insurance companies and other big business. The American way of health care has become more about profit rather than actual health care. With the power of the internet anyone can now become their own doctor although highly not recommended im just proving a point. Everything doctors know you can find now out in 5 minutes looking it up on google.
Anyone who thinks im some big "conspiracy theorist" as to pharma companies not caring about your health here is a lamestream media link proving my point that pharma companies dont sell cures if it doesnt make them profit.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tjxXwaUUrxs
meninostongueFeb 10, 2011
Your first link is to a company that sells a machine to make colloidal silver.
The second proudly proclaims that it is sponsored by holistic and naturopathic product manufacturers. The "science" shows it working in a petrie dish, not ingested into the body and there is no reputable study cited. Silver is applied to high-end active wear because it does indeed kill bacteria on surfaces, thus preventing odor. That in no way indicates that it works as internal medicine. Drinking hair dye won't change your hair color.
And the third link (video)? Some guy saying it works. Well, I'm convinced.
None of these have randomized, double-blinded studies. None are reviewed in any journal. All claim a miracle cure to a whole host of diseases. These should be red flags that this is pure quackery. If people were being cured by this, you could not suppress that news. Thousands of people would be telling the world of their miraculous new clean bill of health. This isn't happening because cures like this are crap. Nobody is getting better from them. Find one case where a person had (documented) HIV, herpes, etc and now doesn't (documented) after this treatment. There are none.
Think what you want about big pharma, etal., but what they do works. Cancer survival is up. Diseases are eliminated. Science isn't easy, but it works. This crap is just scams and magical thinking.
followth3leaderFeb 11, 2011
read through the comments on the third video. no one has any complaints in fact theres more testimonials as to what colloidal silver actually has treated then people trying to discredit it.
meninostongueFeb 11, 2011
Testimonials aren't science.
followth3leaderFeb 11, 2011
science has never been 100% accurate. even doctors do guesswork.
qeffectFeb 10, 2011
Amazing amount of paranoia here! Instead just being happy about news like this.
Firstable: cancer CAN be cured, infact, it is in the majority of cases.
A lot argue that there is vested interested in only treating HIV instead of curing it. But rest assured, there are ridicolous amounts of money being invested into research for a cure. Guess what, the company or institution that finds a cure for HIV will infact make BILLIONS in profits. It will free the world, 7 billion. It will be a revolution like the pill in the 70s. Man do i look forward to that :-)
The overall revenue in HIV treatment may go down, but the one company who has the cure... oh boy.
So, the very same reason for a lot of paranoic views out here - capitalism - is infact the reason these views are simply wrong. Ideas are sometimes not realized simply because they are not worth it (yet), not because some evil CEO hides them in his drawer.
And sometimes reaching a goal is just not as fast as a lot in here would wish. It will take a lot of small steps to a cure. Maybe its even fluent.
If there's money to make, someone will pursue and realize it. Thats the beauty (and curse) of capitalism.
So take off your aluminium hats and lets work together on this :-)
ohGODstoptheSTUPIDFeb 10, 2011
can't wait for this terrible Virus to be eradicated, im sure that those who make the cure will be among the richest in the entire world. further-more if they can cure HIV & maybe AIDS then theres sure to be an absolute breakthrough in overall Medicine soon-after.
imarascalFeb 19, 2011
Are implying that every lab in the world is ONLY working on a cure for AIDS? Iradication of any disease takes years of scientific research. If that's the case why donate to Cancer Society, MDS, Arthritis Foundation or any other research.I"m sure relatives of those with Alzheimers would be glad to have a medication available to retard the downward spiral of any disease. Drug companies would still MAKE $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ even if it isn't a cure. Get it?
ohGODstoptheSTUPIDFeb 20, 2011
the thing is, these charity's and such do Research to eradicate the disease/Virus that is there goal, im fairly sure they have no hidden agenda and to be honest a cure for a disease/virus would be more cost-effective than ongoing treatment. so im fairly sure that we shouldnt give up hope on donating to charitys who do this research unless some government backed programe is set up, more likely by the UN or WHO than any one government

You said:
"but if we can live a full life with it without negative side effects isn't that a cure?"
I don't care about the statistics of the rate of transmission. I'm simply telling you why you can't call it a cure.
If the disease is stil there then it's not a cure it's a simple as that. Treating symptoms != treating the problem.
