Love it! Strangely enough when I tried to post to FB I had to fill in a CAPTCHA before it would let me. Just a coincidence - right?.....
iamcapstoneSep 22, 2011
Me too!
deminicusSep 22, 2011
I hate the captcha they added. Any1 know how to bypass it?
maestrohSep 22, 2011
yeah. type in the damn letters
antdudeSep 23, 2011
Or better, stop using FB.
mccscott71Sep 22, 2011
Best, most concise explanation of it I've seen yet
nekokittaySep 22, 2011
Also true about Google.
po43292Sep 22, 2011
true about anything online you don't pay for as a service, not including your connection of course.
nekokittaySep 22, 2011
This is not necessarily true. iCloud is a free service, but Apple is only interested in using the service to sell more iPads, iPhones and computers.
zipkoSep 23, 2011
Still applies, only in this instance the entities are owned by the same company. The purpose of iCloud is to sell advertising space to the other Apple divisions. Apple is it's own customer.
takamalakSep 22, 2011
Especially true about Google.
bendvisSep 22, 2011
And about the 'membership cards' you get at grocery stores. In exchange for 50 cents off of that box of cereal and 3 cents off a gallon of gas at their gas station, the grocery stores are tracking your spending so that they can better plan their sales.
hillsfarApr 3, 2012
For a long time, I had a card that I picked up off the floor that some senior citizen had dropped (I know it was a senior citizen because it had a senior discount on it). I used that instead.
shaidownSep 23, 2011
yes and no...
Google uses the information it gathers about you to make the ads you see more relevant to you when you are surfing the web.
Facebook takes the information that it gathers about you and sells it to other companies for money
similar... but vastly different
ancientdinkoSep 23, 2011
both google and fb own you. It's just one shelters you and the other pimps you out
nconn360Sep 23, 2011
Also, law enforcement agencies. The CIA and the FBI, oh and potential employers. Great market. Why spy on people when they will spy on themselves for you.
ajh16Sep 23, 2011
Yes, but the other half of that is that, at least in Google's case, and perhaps FB tries a little to do the same, the idea is to improve marketing you get as well. Marketing, while many people hate it with a passion, is a fact of life. Historically, it has been a blunt instrument with a wide spread to those who are both interested and dis-interested making it have little meaningful contribution to most who view it.
Google's efforts actually improve this model for consumers considerably by trying to figure out what you would be interested in so that marketing can be targeted more directly. This increases the chances that you'll actually get something useful from the marketing, lets them charge more for providing it (better return for the marketer as well) and lets them pass some of that profit on to you as free services that are being paid for on your behalf by the advertisers. It really is an all around win for everyone compared to the old model.
Sure, a side effect of this is that people call foul on the "invasion of privacy", but come on, it is information you are choosing to put online. As for tracking what sites you use, that's no different from what has been done in retail for a long time anyway, or tracking demographics of TV viewership and newspaper readership.

Facebook - biggest pimp since the Myspace phenomenon.

So true!!
spacecowb0ySep 23, 2011
Hmm, pigs are basically existent because of man. We bred them to be tame and manageable, which made them vulnerable in the wild for the most part. Pig is essentially a man made species. If they took away us humans from the planet, then the pigs we 'farm' would most likely go extinct. The few remaining would have to adapt and eventually it would evolve to its new environment.
Also, is this picture saying, that you would rather pay money to use facebook as a premium service, or just endear some s**tty ads to make it free. Facebook used to be free with little to no ads. As they expanded, they would have to expand on their end as well, with multiple servers and perhaps even hire a staff... now they're a company servicing you, as the customer, to keep you coming back. They want it to be free, otherwise the company probably wouldn't exist to its extent now.
I think this picture is taking something mildly true, seeing as we are being advertised to, with selective ads pertaining who we are, but we're also using that service in our daily lives, for free. It's the Internet age, you have to assimilate or die. Also, I'm pretty high.
melthornalSep 23, 2011
Obviously you have never heard of feral boar. Pigs do just fine when released into the wild, and after one generation they look like a boar. After a few more generations you cannot distinguish between a true boar and a feral boar. Especially if they interbreed.
stk198323Sep 23, 2011
Since you totally miss the joke:
Pigs are raised to give us something: Their meat.
Facebook is the same: You voluntarily give something (post pics, info, etc on your profile) so that Facebook can benefit out of it.
The difference between Facebook and other companies is that on Facebook you are trained to do exactly what the company wants; Give out the information thinking YOU are rewarded by Facebook while in reality it,s totally the opposite, the info YOU provided for FREE is used by Facebook to benefit. So in this case, the best thing for Facebook to do is actually to make you think they are providing you with a ''free space'' to have fun while in reality it's free space to print money from them!

This is also why most cable providers suck as well. We are not there customers either.

Digg and You. Gmail and You. Windows and You.
Oops. Probably shouldn't have mentioned that last one.
4bitSep 22, 2011

4bitSep 23, 2011
Doh!
eddywi11Sep 22, 2011
ok, well would you rather PAY for facebook then? its a business, and in order to continue their service they need to have some sort of income, be thankful its not costing you a penny.
JonathantorresdesignSep 22, 2011
OMG thats really GOOD! Geez I feel like crap now -__-
rainniuSep 22, 2011
Really? TV is the same thing...
link97381Sep 22, 2011
Except most people pay to watch TV.
rainniuSep 22, 2011
It's a +/- game. Cable/Satellite TV would be free if marketers paid enough to subsidize the service. They don't, but they make it cheaper than if they didn't market.
Before the days of cable it was free; subsidized by marketers.
We're grasping at straws if we're arguing that they didn't subsidize enough, the point is that it DOES experience that subsidization, even if it isn't enough to bring the consumer cost to zero.

In a odd way we are helping to create an industry that employs people whether we like it or not, so perhaps facebook users are customers but pay with time instead of money!
