tokeofthetown.com — The Las Vegas police officer who shot and killed an unarmed Trevon Cole during a June drug raid over small-time marijuana sales was justified, a coroner's inquest found Saturday night, despite contradictory findings from the medical examiner.

Is there any crime cops can't get away with?
blqysmgAug 24, 2010
Apparently not. 200 cop shootings, only a single one found to be inappropriate? I guess cops really can do no wrong in the eyes of the court. If you are not a cop, your life is meaningless to law enforcement.

Have you ever sat in selection for jury duty? One of the questions that will get you disqualified if you answer YES is, " Do you believe a police officer can make a mistake?"
Also the word of a police officer is seen as the word of 3 non police officers that means a non police officer is 1/3 of a person in the eyes of the American justice system ( Hell at least Sharia Law says the word of a woman or non Muslim is worth 1/2 a person.)
meribianAug 26, 2010
Thanks for letting me know how to get out of jury duty.
cooldude777Aug 25, 2010
Neither of those statements is exactly true. The lawyers can only throw out so many potential jurors, so you can't exclude every juror who thinks police officers make mistakes (unless there are only a handful). Also, while you may be correct in how jurors value police officers personally, in the eyes of the court they are all equal. The jurors have to decide for themselves who is more credible when there is a discrepancy in testimony.

I'm pretty sure if they refuse to follow an order, like going after drug addicts, they'll get punished for it. Any other law, or rule? No.
cooldude777Aug 25, 2010
Anytime you break a law, even a minor one like speeding you risk a run-in with the police. For any given interaction there is some small chance you will be tased or shot without absolutely deserving it. Remember that in all of your interactions with the police and don't f**k around. "Yes, sir" and "No, sir", and making small, slow movements will improve your chances of survival.
supervAug 25, 2010
True but very sad that this is what we've come to in this country.
unfatherAug 25, 2010
I agree that addressing someone who views themselves superior as "Sir" will increase your odds of "survival" in any situation, but I will never condone calling police officers Sir or Ma'am just because they're in uniform. Those titles are a matter of courtesy and it is in no way appropriate to use them just because someone's a cop.
One of the other problems I have here is that I'm inferring you believe people should treat cops like some kind of exceptional entity that the general populace is beneath, when in reality the police are perceived, defined, and intended to be public servants and are thus subject to the populace instead. Of course the reality today is that law enforcement can get away with a lot and they protect their own at the expense of the people they're supposed to serve on occasion. But you know how that came to be? Because people allowed police to subject them to that kind of treatment, in part because they allowed themselves to perceive the law as above the people rather than a facility in service of it.
Thankfully as society has progressed some have fought and won many concessions to keep the government in check, especially here in America which is why this land is the best whether you like it or not (at least top three). However part of balancing the power between the people and their leaders is to realize that it's a supposed to be a symbiotic balance of equal merit and influence. So stop treating police officers, the FBI, the IRS, the military, and especially the president like they're special because they're not. They're just like you and me except they're more dedicated.
blqysmgAug 25, 2010
So, CoolDude, what you are saying is that because the police can legally beat people up, electrocute, or shoot people who irritate them, we should be especially respectful and careful in our movements out of fear of harm?
The police have the right to commit assault, battery, inflict pain to "gain compliance" and commit murder under the merest hint that they felt threatened. If a police officer attacks you for no reason (on your part) and causes you harm such that you take any action to STOP him from harming you, he gets to claim to be the victim and YOU get charged with assault on a police officer and resisting arrest. If a police officer decides to lash out for no apparent reason and harms someone, it takes video evidence and a LOT of eye witnesses to even bring it to court. If you get caught collecting video evidence of police crimes, YOU get beaten, arrested, have your property confiscated and the evidence of the crime erased. Then they give your broken property back to you and say, "Oh, I guess what you did wasn't strictly illegal after all. Here's your camcorder. Hope your bruises heal soon. Don't forget to pay your lawyer."
aubieguy333Aug 25, 2010
Truth, but how sad is it that any time we interact with those sworn "To Serve and Protect", we must show deference and respect, many times undeserved, to them for fear of getting charged, tased, or shot?
Innocent until proven guilty may technically apply in court, but definitely not to officers. Apparently making a sudden motion with a shiny object that you didn't even actually have is enough to warrant death.

You know what's funny about that song. I remember years ago, they interviewed Dr. Dre about where the idea for that song came from. Turns out, he and Eazy-E were driving around town with paintballs filled with red paint, shooting them at people at bus stops to see people freak out when they thought they had been shot. After a while of doing this, they were caught by the police, and were upset about it.

I find it somewhat disturbing that when an old lady is caught on camera stuffing a cat in a dumpster it causes enough people to get upset that she ends up under police protection. However when a cop shoots and kills someone who is, really if laws weren't retarded, innocent, that cop doesn't end up being harassed by thousands of people.
I'm now condoning the actions of the psychopathic cat lady, they disgusted me as well. But this I feel should resonate louder no?
Maybe the sad truth of it is that it's not even shocking to hear this anymore, maybe we've become to accustomed to hearing about cops pointlessly killing.
I'll always believe no human should be given as much privilege and responsibility as cops are given, our ego's will always take over. With great power comes a great inability and flaw in humans to use it responsibly.

Canadian cops kill and almost all the time get away with it.
Example: "Jeff Berg" Vancouver BC. After 6 years the coroner deemed that the 'murder' did not happen. Jeff was hit in the back of the head with a cop side arm and then had a Vancouver cop boot print on the face. And was then thrown in lockup for no enforceable charge. Cops then saw he was in bad need of medical care, so he was dragged out of the lockup(on security camera) and then dumped in an alley to die.
And ten years later(now) and many more deaths in lockups in Canada, there are new rules in to make sure prisoners get actual medical watch or care in lockup. And no more using Tasers of death to wake people up.
w1cked1Aug 25, 2010

The bullets hit homes, sheds and decks, but no people, although one man who heard the commotion had just stepped away from a window when a bullet ripped through its frame and struck a closet wall.
The shooting sparked a public outcry, with many Londoners questioning why the officer, a five-year veteran, fired so many shots."

This is a tragic outcome of a situation that could have easily been prevented, however if you're upset about the verdict at the coroner's inquest, you should be pointing fingers at the jury.
ano233Aug 25, 2010
Was there a Jury? Many police opt for the judge to decide the case (available option in many states, including mine). The judge gives the officer a *wink & a nod*, pretends to listen to the evidence, then finds the officer not guilty, or in cases of heavy press coverage/damning evidence, a few years Probation.

Yup, they hold a view you disagree with, so that invalidates all the evidence they cited from the medical examiner, the defense attorney and the court records.
Go f**k yourself.
beerrulesAug 25, 2010
What evidence? They sight two conflicting reports one from the coroner one from the ME, which lets be honest neither of those reports take into account factors outside the fact that the suspect died and died in this manner of a gun shot wound. The problem they cite is the fact that he fell after being shot. Does those two reports make all the evidence in a case? Last I looked no, otherwise witnesses, and other expert testimony would be useless. Plus what court records? What defense attorney? This never went to criminal court! Now the family of the man may be suing the city in a civil matter which is why they have a "Family Attorney"(which makes him the plaintiffs attorney). Which the fact that it never went to criminal court means that the District attorney signed off the officer was justified, along with the States attorney, and then Internal Affairs. Sure you could claim those three offices all covered up for the single officer but realistically probably not. Oh and there is no mention of a civil suite so again this hasn't see the inside of a court room yet. But hey burning people at the stake is ok, after all what do we need a justice system for?
Oh and the guy was breaking the law cause in the end Pot is still illegal(beer is not however) and lets not forget running from the police and destroying evidence but I suppose you all would want made legal too?

lukeatronAug 25, 2010
So the strongest justification you can produce for the execution of an unarmed man is the fact he was allegedly fleeing and destroying evidence. I'm no legal expert but I don't recall any case in which a court of law imposed the death penalty for those offenses, yet somehow, if one just bypasses the whole trial by jury of peers, that person is legally allowed to act as judge jury and executioner with complete legal impunity.
The real argument here is whether the officer was justifiably defending his life. All that bulls**t you spewed up there is completely irrelevant. There's not a whole lot of evidence produced in this article but the implication is that that evidence was lacking and/or controversial. This should be treated exactly as a case where a civilian shot and killed a man and then claimed self defense as there is no legal justification otherwise. If you honestly believe that the way this case was handled with the same diligence that you or I would have faced with a dead, unarmed man crumpled in his bathroom and conflicting reports coming from those people who actually did examine the evidence then you are either too deluded, too stupid or too naive to hold any credible opinion on this matter.
No one other than a cop could ever pass through the fetid gut of our legal system and come out as squeaky clean on the other side. If you had ever been unfortunate enough to be involved with the criminal legal system, you would understand why everything about what happened here just reeks of systemic inequality.
beerrulesAug 25, 2010
Do you picture this officer as judge dread?
I admit I'm not a criminal so no I've never faced the justice system, in fact I've never even had a traffic ticket. I however have watched 20 years of cops if that counts for anything.
But to your argument what civilian would be serving a warrant against a drug dealer? You try to compare what would happen if a civilian shot the guy yes he'd be strung up because the civilian would have no business there to begin with. I do agree with you this article is lacking a lot of evidence and has a lot of implications but my point is simply I won't stand in judgment of the officer with lack of evidence to do so. You and other before you just go with the conjecture saying oh the officer must be wrong, and shouldn't have shot the man but really no one knows for sure exactly what happened and the justice system which we uphold and believe in vindicated the officer and called it a justified homicide. So maybe you don't personally like the justice system, and from the sounds of it you've had a couple run ins with it but that doesn't mean its wrong. Just blind.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

Despicable, this sounds like it was practically an execution, or EXTREME incompetence. How exactly was this "Officer" found to be "Justified", a corrupt judge? Idiotic Jury?. "Internal Review". You're nothing but a delinquent hiding behind technicalities...
crazyhorse13Aug 25, 2010
So you're saying he should be shot?
solistusAug 25, 2010
That's some wonderful fascist f**king logic. Commit a minor misdemeanor and nobody should give a s**t if the cops shoot you dead with no justification? What the hell is wrong with you?
jmrocketAug 26, 2010
So... don't commit misdemeanors?

They didn't have anti-terror laws back then like they do now.
Anybody that is against the establishment is now a terrorist and has no rights to anything. They wrote those laws for you and I because they saw this all coming.
bracomadarAug 25, 2010
No, they just hung you for treason.

f**kin' A. I used to be mad when a cop got killed, but now I'm happy for it.

Hooray for the donut grazing costume wearing hero! A parade must be held at once to honor him for "just doing his job."

Reading the news f**king pisses me off.
theskunkmonkeyAug 25, 2010
Yet again, another case justifying my fear of local police more than any terrorist.
They want us to be afraid of the brown skinned mooselims so we don't see who the real terrorists are in this country.
w1cked1Aug 25, 2010
What's that? Cop fell victim to hit and run? Same day as judge? OOh the horror

The ongoing s**t storm of this 'war' gives me a headache, RIP to this guy that could have been anyone's friend..
animan351Aug 25, 2010
Most cops go their entire career without shooting a person. The fact that this one has shot three is suspicion enough.
bencanfieldAug 25, 2010
To his credit, though, he is dealing with stoners -- the most aggressive people on earth.
stavrogin2Aug 25, 2010
We have the technology to put a small camera and microphone on every cop and have it record every minute of his work day. It would protect the good cops and catch the bad cops in the act, so it's never, ever going to happen.
I don't normally support the death penalty, because the justice system clearly isn't perfect, as every cop will lie to protect himself and his colleagues. But, I would make an exception for hanging every bad cop.

How many more people gotta die in this god damn stupid f**king war? How many kids are without their parents tonight because they're either in jail, or dead from this drug war we got going on? This is no longer about "I wanna smoke pot", this is about saving people's lives. For those of us who don't work for the government, we are all the enemy of the state in one way, or another. Even if you haven't committed a crime, the cops will always suspect you of a crime. Kathryn Johnston proved you don't even have to have drugs to be killed in a drug raid. The government is like wolves taking cattle from herd. Are we gonna keep being like the rest of the cattle in a herd and just ignore what's happening, or are we going to take notice and do something? This is not a country of "All men are created equal". This is a country of "Some men are more equal than others" and it's not going to change on it's own. The police state is here and it's getting worse. We can either sit around, keep our mouths shut about it, do nothing to stop it, and let it get closer and closer to 1984, or we actually speak up, change it, and take this country back. No more spying on our own peaceful citizens, no more locking people up for filming cops, and no more god damn war on drugs!

For Christ sake, it's a tragedy but let's be sensible. The legal systems basis is innocent until proven guilty. There might be things to indicate foul play but from the look of it, it's entirely possible to there wasn't enough proof that he was guilty beyond reasonable doubt.
It's better that 1000 guilty men go free than one innocent man be imprisoned.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

really now? you need to read that article again, it clearly shows an execution based on the evidence
tac50Aug 25, 2010
It shows clear bias, shows one piece of evidence. And gets the quotes from the victim's family attorney. What jury wouldn't find a man guilty on such strong evidence?
I'm not saying the man is innocent, hell I'm not even saying there wasn't enough evidence to find him guilty.
But it pisses me off when people read a single article about it, which shows strong bias, and start writing comments like...
"Is there any crime cops can't get away with?"
"Sounds like a great job for a serial killer."
"I think I might become a cop. I mean f**k, you can do anything you want..."
"You don't become a cop to serve and protect, only to be an assh**e."
"If someone shot this cop, I wouldn't mind."
It's moronic.
thaalienAug 25, 2010
The problem nowadays is that cops are allowed to shoot first and then ask questions later. When in fact they are not supposed to fire until fired upon. They are just to trigger happy nowadays and need to be more brave and less twitchy.

It really should. NORML should definitely put this on their page too, and it should be spread like wildfire.
