I would imagine that he already did, saw that it worked, and wanted to do this as an advertising stunt. The bullet doesn't have to go through to hurt like hell.

Why yes, the force of 600-700 ft lbs will hurt quite a bit.
I once saw a video of a body armor salesman who did this on a daily basis. At least he was smart enough to put a stack of magazines between his stomach and the armor.

I really wanted to call him stupid, but after seeing how well the vest works at point-blank range... I'm thinking maybe I'm the one that erroneously estimated the risks. Could it be that he isn't as dumb as his actions seem to make him?

The only thing more stupid than this guy's body armor test are those who site this video as proof that handguns should be illegal. Next time you drive 1 MPH over the speed limit, download pirated material or smoke a joint, you may just consider how easy it is to break the laws that should have prevented you from doing what you just did. Now consider how easily a bottom feeding criminal who's sole purpose in life is to do bad things, could circumvent any sort of gun ban the government might impose. Of course good people would obey these laws leaving only criminals and cops possessing firearms. Would that make you feel more safe?
