I'm American, and Aluminium just makes more sense. It better matches the names of all the metals in the same group (Gallium, Iridium, Thallium).
I still say Aluminum most of the time as it feels more natural, but the extra i is definitely the correct way.

It's impossible to stomach most UK spellings without sounding either quaint (e.g., "Foetus"... with the oe conjoined when you want to be super-annoying) or mincing (e.g., "Aluminium").

Henry Davis first discovered the metal and called it alumium. Then he renamed it to Aluminum. Not only that, he wrote that term down on his book "Chemical Philosophy". So technically, the United States is correct on this one.

Are you sure you don't mean Humphry Davy, British chemist and author of the book "Elements of chemical philosophy"... The same guy who named it "aluminum" and then changed his mind after he thought it wasn't logical and renamed it "aluminium".

what topic did you get banned over?
executexAug 8, 2010
I didn't get banned, but I got restricted from editing topics about a war on wiki. Apparently, the wiki administrators there were big nationalists who didn't want anyone putting a more neutral and objective voice to the article.
But I know many people who have been banned, or "gagged" etc, simply because they've found different sources that doesn't agree with the tone of the article.
You guys can bury me all you want, but it's probably because you've never questioned the official story of anything in your life and assume everyone is honest when holding great power over others.

Can we at least agree that when it comes to language, no one is more neurotic than the French?
"A recent controversy involved the officialization of feminine equivalents for the names of several professions. For instance, in 1997, Lionel Jospin's government began using the feminine noun "la ministre" to refer to a female minister, following the official practice of Canada, Belgium and Switzerland and a common, though until then unofficial, practice in France. The Académie, however, insisted on the traditional use of the masculine noun, "le ministre," for a minister of either gender. Use of either form remains controversial."

Not that anybody is going to listen, but there is zero justification for this particular Internet myth, nor is there much reason to believe that the British would import troops all the way from Canada when they could just as easily (and did) do it all themselves.
Interestingly , it's usually the same people who criticize Americans for romanticizing their military who are must gung-ho about this particular tale. Nationalism does funny things to people.

In French, all nouns have a gender - they are either masculine or feminine. The gender of some nouns makes sense (homme [man] is masculine, femme [woman] is feminine) but others don't: the words personne [person] and victime [victim] are always feminine, even when the person or victim is a man!

Wrong Skillel. A group that takes on an alias is often refered to as non-plural, for example in politics, sports and many other situations.
"The FBI is good at crime investigation."
"FC Barcelona is the best football team in spain."
"'The Dragon and Fairy Pwnzorz' is the best guild on the server."
"Iron Maiden is a NWOBHM band."
"Angels & Airwaves is a supergroup."
A group is only refered to as plural if you can refer to a single member as non-plural, for example:
"Those rednecks are stupid." -> "He is a redneck."
"Those hippies are high. " -> "He is a hippie."

Screw the IUPAC, the original spelling was 'aluminum' (invented by a Brit, no less). It was only changed to aluminium by the IUPAC to conform to the standard of elements ending in "-ium" for the reason "that's just the way things are done". You'll notice that plenty of other elements still don't end in -"ium".

johnfluxAug 8, 2010
tbonepower07, it depends on which parts of the bible you read.
For example, if you read about King Herod killing all the first born, then since King Herod died in 4BC, it had to have been before then. And he ordered all under-twos to be killed, and it took a further year to actually carry out the orders, to that puts Jesus's birth at about 7BC.
But Luke says:
Luke2:2 And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria. 2:3 And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city. 2:4 And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:) 2:5 To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child.
And Cyrenius didn't became governor of Syria until 6AD.
So, as usually, the bible has contradictory facts and everyone just picks a picks one of them and ignores the rest.
