I think a lot of this has to do with the guilty until proven innocent attitude society has towards men and infidelity. The group that is scrutinized and in the spotlight is certainly the group that will be exposed more often. The idea that women are somehow more altruistic is a bulls**t myth. They are every bit as slippery, slimy and self-serving as men.

I was unaware that anyone had a "guilty until proven innocent" policy with spousal infidelity. If I assumed my husband were cheating we'd have a pretty terrible marriage.
And yes, we can be just as terrible as men, but that isn't the majority of either gender.

This might be a completely meaningless guess, and I hope someone will comment with a little more hard data on the issue but...
I've read before that women are more likely to have an emotional affair than men, who are more likely to cheat with meaningless sex. Wouldn't someone be more likely to be carefully covering their tracks if they are "in love" with someone outside their marriage, rather than casually sleeping with someone who doesn't mean much? They'd have more to lose, and more at stake.

That's why I think men cheating is on a completely different level than women cheating. Men cheat and it's usually to get their rocks off. Women cheat, and sex is just the icing on the cake. They're in it for so much more just sex.
To me, sex is an activity like playing tennis. It's just something you do with a partner. Men cheating are rarely making love, they're just abusing a system of trust to f**k.
Women are completely different. They may not even have sex in that sort of relationship, but the bonds of trusts are emotional and intellectual before they're sexual. The sex part is the least important and the last and least violated by women. What really harms the relationship is the emotional crime, but we only focus on the sex part.

It's easier for women to cheat because it's just plain easier for women to cheat. A woman can slut herself out and half the male population will jump at the chance. Men just don't have that opportunity. Women can be more calculated in their affairs because of this selection element.
Society has also made it easier for them by setting males up as deserving of constant suspicion and females less so. It's not OK for a man to be as jealous or controlling as a woman because that's seen as abusive and insensitive. In order to be a better boyfriend/husband, you're supposed to be more understanding and supportive of your girlfriend/wife and her "friends", which only sets you up to fail.

I think that many men aren't willing to accept that women cheat as often as they do, so they ignore the signs and women get away with it.
Women have been conditioned to look for warning signs to catch a guy cheating, but a lot of men, NOT ALL, still believe that cheating is a "man" thing so unless its obvious, they won't catch it.

The alibi friend thing is bulls**t. Women just don't tell anyone. They cannot afford to get caught. Their families and older children would lose all respect for them, where a man caught cheating is just not held to the same standard.
Men who are being cheated on are likely being cheated on because they stopped paying attention to their wife, which does not excuse cheating, but makes them less likely to wonder how she spends her time when he isn't around.
Most people who get caught cheating, want to get caught. They want out but don't have the guts to just tell someone they don't love them any more. I think many men end relationships by cheating or treating someone poorly because they'd prefer to be dumped than initiate the breakup discussion, confrontation etc.

Sorry to strike such a nerve... just an opinion... I should have been more clear, bulls**t meaning that in my opinion the ones who have an alibi friend are not the ones who are able to keep from getting caught. The friend tells her hubby, the hubby tells a friend... game over. I bet the outcome would probably be the same for many people who ask for the divorce than if they just got caught cheating. They either have to fork over a significant portion of their wealth or step up and work it out. I doubt even these wealthy celebs really want to sneak around, lie, and drag their friends in to it for their whole life. They know the other shoe has to drop sometime. If they don't get caught or fess up, they have to carry this burden till death do they part. Again, just an opinion...

All my male friends that got caught were not of carelessness or lacking alibi. One guy even faked a Mexican trip with the boys to carry an affair. He even brought back souvenirs and "photos" (taken at a local beach with shots of the ocean only). The other women called or tracked down the wives/girlfriends to expose the affair.
Here's the difference, men want sex and women want to own the men. When the guy is "the other guy," he's not going to be giving up a sure thing very easily. Very unlikely he's going to call up the husband/boyfriend to tell about the affair. When a woman is "the other woman," she wants to replace the wife/girlfriend.
