I can't believe they left out 'The Village'! I still want my refund for that "movie" Shyamalan! You stole 2 hours of my life!
teacher2beJul 10, 2010
I liked it, but what the hell! Was it not marketed as a scary movie?
hipmanJul 10, 2010
Were you expecting gore?.
teacher2beJul 10, 2010
Not too sure. I just remember being disappointed back when it came out. The way the commercials represented it did not come through in the movie itself.
elliotysJul 10, 2010
I'm sorry, but how on earth did you like that movie? It was the worst piece of s**t I have ever seen!!!
darkphenoxJul 10, 2010
The concept was interesting of people leaving modern society behind and tricking their children into think it was the 1880s.
mechabortionJul 10, 2010
"im angry because i was not told how the movie ends in the trailer". you are supposed to think there are monsters because they think there are monsters... i dont think that just because a movie is not what you expected it to be it should be condemned
brbeairdJul 10, 2010
SPOILER ALERT!
craigreedJul 10, 2010
You can't blame the filmmaker or the movie on some decision the marketing department made, that goes for all movies not just M night films.
feomatteo88Jul 10, 2010
I was scared :(
iignotusJul 10, 2010
They could only have one movie where they went "f**k you!", and they wanted it to be his most recent. They should've made this when The Village first came out.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

It was a pretty bad movie. But it reminded me of the book called "Anthem" by Ayn Rand where they're secluded in this "Amish paradise" and the main character goes outside to the real world. Really good book.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
mikepictorJul 10, 2010
So did I, but you have to see it in the right frame of mind. Like "Signs", it's a movie about people reacting to circumstances they can't understand or control. I don't see it as a suspense film, but a character drama, a society trying to deal with the unknown.
teazalamodeJul 10, 2010
me too
daevanJul 10, 2010
It's not okay to advertise such a movie as a "scary" film like they were for months before its release. I was lied to.
danielhunterJul 10, 2010
I was 14 when it came out, and I went to see it in theaters. I remember thinking "Wow, that was a unique movie and I didn't see that twist coming at all." Then I heard all the critics and other people talking s**t about it. Being 14 at the time, I was like "YEAH, f**k THAT SHAMALYANANSFNA GUY"
But looking back, I actually did enjoy that movie. I should watch it again now that I'm a bit older.
tearlockJul 10, 2010
Don't blame the director for the studio's poor choice in marketing campaigns.

Yea The Village was a hunk of s**t.
dafragstaJul 10, 2010
I liked it. It was his best movie since Unbreakable, but that was it. It was all downhill after that.
mattbrad2Jul 10, 2010
Sorry dude, your in the minority on this one. I'll give ya Lady in the Water and The Crappening as pure feces but the Village was generally liked.
mikepictorJul 10, 2010
I loved Lady in the Water
speedsteamboatJul 10, 2010
I think you have a weird definition of "generally liked."
More like "generally divisive." I think the people that went into it wanted to like it succeeded, and the rest of us failed to see what the fuss was about since it wasn't that great.
http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/village/
mattbrad2Jul 10, 2010
SpeedSteamBoat - I got my movies crossed. I was thinking about "Signs". No, The Village was not generally well received at all. I still liked it but I think the majority of folks didn't care for it much.
blindtetraJul 10, 2010
Screw the spoiler alert. Within the first 10 minutes of the movie I predicted the end.
mattbrad2Jul 10, 2010
Ahh come on. Even the credits that came out weeks earlier gave away the ending "security guard driving work truck" but the coolest thing was the main dude (william hurt?) being the founder of that entire park from his dads money left to him from when he got shot. I didn't see that coming.
professorhazardJul 10, 2010
I thought they were on another planet, and the mysterious boxes contained advanced laser weaponry.
rpgmakrJul 10, 2010
Man, has it become cool to bash Shyamalan! The happening wasn't even that bad.
mattbrad2Jul 10, 2010
I was thinking the same thing (about the bashing, not about the crappening). The man has made 2 of my top 5 films I've ever seen but yet has also made 2 of the worst movies I've ever seen and I haven't even seen this new one. How the hell is that possible?!
rpgmakrJul 10, 2010
Seriously, if you just watch The Happening as I did back then, without knowing of the people saying "OMG can this be s**ttier?" in the background you'll enjoy it.
shmefJul 10, 2010
Okay, f**k this list, I liked the Village.

But would it have killed him to just make the monster real or allude to a real monster? I mean it's a made up story and I think the was the main reason for why people were disappointed in the film. The acting and rest of story was actually pretty good.
tearlockJul 10, 2010
I liked that movie a lot actually. I'm still scratching my head over why people hated it so much.
danielhunterJul 10, 2010
Simple: people were expecting something different. For a lot of people, that's just too much to handle. I liked it also.
black27696Jul 10, 2010
I was like "huh, those things look pretty fake." Then I was like "oh, they're supposed to look fake because the people are dressing up. Oh I see it's modern day. Ohhhh. Meh"
Signs was like "hey there's an alien, kinda". <an eternity passes> "hey another one". Then it was over.
fujogustoJul 10, 2010
I remember watching The Village and calling the ending half way into it. I can't put my finger on it but I remember strongly thinking that he must have stolen the premise from somewhere else because it seemed so familiar. Maybe from Outer Limits or the Twilight Zone or something.
Closed AccountJul 10, 2010
A children's book, "Running out of time" had almost the exact same plot, better story too, not that I didn't like The Village. So yeah, kind of a rip off.
toxicshokJul 10, 2010
Are you saying that a movie about people pretending to live in the 19th century while being denied medicine by elders is in anyway similar to a book about a diphtheria outbreak in a pretend 19th century colony where the forces that be are preventing medicine from getting in?
bah!
srsly though read "running out of time" its a good book that doesn't have that M. Night Shymalan weirdness to it.
danielhunterJul 10, 2010
I was 14 when it came out, and I went to see it in theaters. I remember thinking "Wow, that was a unique movie and I didn't see that twist coming at all." Then I heard all the critics and other people talking s**t about it. Being 14 at the time, I was like "YEAH, f**k THAT SHAMALYANANSFNA GUY."

toxicshokJul 10, 2010
I didn't like it because he plagiarized the premise of the book "Running Out of Time" shamelessly. Running out of time was a good book so the Village was an ok film. The problem is, it wasn't his idea.

"I make $20 an hour AND I get to suck all the dick I want? What's the downside?"
searching4socksJul 10, 2010
It only premiered a week ago...2nd most isn't considered good for a movies first week...especially one of this size and this heavily marketed...and has a devoted fanbase. Twilight (ugh) beat it by a huge margin. Toy Story 3 which is was released two weeks before the Last Airbender is still pretty close in profits. Let's see if it even gets close to the $150 million budget and the $130 in advertising.
By the way, I looked the only critic that I could think of that was old enough to review the original Star Wars.
Ebert gave Star Wars(IV) 4 stars. And fans seem to rate it higher than the Last Air Bender as well.
rrouseJul 10, 2010
I remember reading the reviews when the first Star Wars movie came out and the critics didn't like it. It was only after weeks of being a best seller that they changed their opinion. A good movie critic should be able to tell you if "you" will enjoy the movie. All too often they tell "me" if it is a good movie or not compared to the best movies ever made. This is not the same thing as tell me if "I" would enjoy the or not.

Actually, critics kind of loved Star Wars. It was praised for its technical achievements and landmark special effects and was nominated for 7 Oscars the year it was released. It holds a score of 93% on Rotten Tomatoes based on nearly 60 reviews. Unless you're talking about the prequels? Everyone knows those sucked.
machinemessiahJul 10, 2010

After I got suckered into seeing The Happening - and found myself laughing with the rest of the audience AT the movie ("You like hot dogs?") I vowed I will NEVER go see another M. Night Shyamalan movie. They can add 3D as an afterthought...they can make the coolest preview imaginable...I don't care any more. Never, never again!
By the way, for a good chuckle, read Roger Ebert's review of The Last Airbender. Hilarious!

His review of The Village is hilarious too. A little from the end:
"It's so witless, in fact, that when we do discover the secret, we want to rewind the film so we don't know the secret anymore.
And then keep on rewinding, and rewinding, until we're back at the beginning, and can get up from our seats and walk backward out of the theater and go down the up escalator and watch the money spring from the cash register into our pockets."
I liked The Village but I still thought this review was too funny.

After this flop, he might as well go even further into the hole he's dugg by making Unbreakable 2, The Seventh Sense, and Racist Mel Gibson vs. Predator.
Closed AccountJul 10, 2010
I'd see Racist Mel Gibson vs. Predator even if M. Night Shyamalan directed it.
eddiepotatoJul 10, 2010
Voicemails left for Predator would get increasingly vile and caustic as the movie progressed, until the climax, when Mel shows up at his house with a megaphone and destroys him with a 10 minute tirade of filth and hatred. Defeated, the Predator, packs his bags and heads back to his own planet.

I find it to be a stupid film, but for the most part, a glorious study in good suspense. In the beginning and middle, when they're chasing things down in their corn fields, scared the piss out of me when I was younger. I'm 24 now.

Diggers are picky, you gotta get the line right. The original post got probably got dugg down for that same reason. All the matters is that we watch the show.
Although I thought that episode, "Mac and Charlie Write a Movie", wasn't the strongest. The best part was Dennis' 'full penetration' speech about Dolph Lundgren.
“Then he smells crime, he’s out busting heads. Then he’s back to the lab for some more full penetration. Smells crime, back to the lab, full penetration. Crime, penetration, crime, full penetration, crime, penetration — And this goes on and on and back and forth for 90 or so minutes until the movie just... sort of ends.”

How the f**k Signs got that high of a score about aliens who could travel light years from their home planet and bring down earth's infrastructure but can't handle baseball bats, water, or doors is beyond me.
I think the critics still had him in high regard and so were reading into it way too deeply like Scrotie McBoogerballs.

I thought Signs was pretty good for the most part. I am still kind of baffled about how water hurts the aliens even though our atmosphere is full of water vapor, lol.

maxmwoodJul 10, 2010
Tbh I really didn't find Unbreakable THAT good.
ldailey06Jul 10, 2010
they're being generous with lady in the water, that is the worst film i have ever seen
spacesterJul 10, 2010
That tracks with me.
The sixth sense suckered me right in, I felt so stupid. But he got me, gotta give credit there.
I still think Unbreakable was a very good and cool movie.
Signs had a just awful, awful premise. I can handle a bad plot, but a horrid premise cannot be overcome. All that good science fiction out there and he goes with that? But I managed to enjoy it, seeing some crafty film-making going on in places. Figured it was a fluke.
I really wanted to enjoy Lady in the water and I did. Paul G. was very good and I picked up up on some of the references to ancient fables and myths that this type of story comes from. A modern fairy tale of the boogeyman genre, I liked it. Still, it was clear that there were good reasons for people not to like it, and by that point the anti m. night bandwagon was in full gallop.
I skipped the Happening and will not see this latest one. I enjoyed Unbreakable so much that I don't like the idea of ending up "hating" m. night, and I'm pretty sure he has used up my charity.
teamgwhoJul 10, 2010
loved 6th sense and unbreakable. i really enjoyed signs mainly because of the direction and pacing and sense of dread. sure the core part of the plot didnt make sense (creature who's allergic to water comes to a planet 65% water and which has rain and snow?), but I still enjoyed it. I wasn't interested in the Village. or Lady in the lake as the reviews kept me away. Finally saw the vbillage. thought it was meh. didn't like the fact that it was written with a "twist" because the twist was lame. Had they let us know the truth at the start it could've been mad einto an interesting morality tale, resisting the urge to rejoin society vs the need for medicine. Would've been more intersting, lady of the Lake I still ahvent seen, and won't unless I am channel surfing and catch it right at the beginning.
Went to see the happening, hoping it would be his resurection. I again like the direction, but felt the plot was silly. and the writing was kinda poor too.
FF to last summer when I saw the teaser trailer for airbender. I've not watched every episode but I've seen enoguh to get the idea, and I like what I see. It's fairly smart, relatively funny, and it took some standard entertainment ideas and gave them it's own personality. So I was really enthused, despite seeing Shamalyans name attached. My son was stoked, so no matter what i thoguht or felt, I was going.
Caught the early reviews. And realized I was going to likely hate it. And when I started counting off the problems in my head 5 mins into the movie... I knew this was gonna be a long movie (despite the 100 minute running time).
I know he's gonna make part 2... and I'm gonna get dragged to it by my son again...
//sigh

Don't know, this thing has a massive budget. Remember how Hulk (2002'ish) did so bad that they blamed the internet for spreading reviews, ruining opening day weekend? And they rebooted the whole thing just 4 years later?
Well, the internet is used ny everyone about now, massive growth, I think it's going to sink this thing not only in the theater, but in DVD sales, etc.
teamgwhoJul 10, 2010
Ang Lee's Hulk opened with 62M then dropped 70% to less then 18M in week 2. There are plenty of other movies that were worse and dropped worse, but for a mega pic like that to drop so much so soon, yeah that was pretty bad, and mainly because of the fanboy word of mouth, the reviews were mixed. I can't remember seeing reviews as savage as Airbender got, particularly Roger Eberts review.
Predators does open this weekend though, TS3 is still going very strong. Twilight doesnt count as competition to me cause it's completely different audiences. next week Inception opens, so there's 3 solid movies that are competing for its money. My problem is Night wrote and directed this thing and supposedly he's gonna do the next one or maybe even the 3rd and they're also stuck with the same actors as in this one.

Iignotus, you are stupid. Keeping the name wouldn't have changed the fact that it was a horrible movie.
masternJul 10, 2010
All I have to say is, in retrospect, Bruce Willis and Haley Joel Osment must have been brilliant actors on the set of the Sixth Sense, cause as far as any actual acting direction goes, M. Night could not have provided any help. When actors work without the safety net, you get brilliant performances like Mark Wahlberg's in the Happening, or either of Bryce Dallas Howard's in his two films.
particleman420Jul 10, 2010
if you think marky mark was good in the happening, i'd hate to go to movie night at your house.

Jameswarren904Jul 10, 2010

mikepictorJul 10, 2010
How?
Did the cartoon suddenly become worse? He made a crap movie based on the cartoon, but it didn't damage the cartoon in any way (and arguably made the cartoon better, as you can turn to it to rediscover it, and forget the film)
protodonJul 10, 2010
No, but now everyone that never saw the cartoon but knew the movie was based on it, automatically think the cartoon sucks. So he ruined the cartoon.
brian1625Jul 10, 2010
I agree with you that in the end, the show is still there. (I don't even want to call it a cartoon) ...however...
because the series is over.. This may have been it's only hope to live on.

At least the whole year of previews/trailers is over. Good riddance.

The Happening was a s**t movie, giving away the ending in the middle was such a retarded move.

darkphenoxJul 10, 2010
I think those two movies had at the very least interesting concepts but Lady in the Water was not well executed at all and the Village tricked people into thinking it was going to be a monster movie.

I've watched Avatar The Last Airbender through twice now, and I honestly think it's one of the best shows I've ever seen (and I watch a lot of TV). To anyone who hasn't seen it, go and download it or stream it on netflix. Don't let this crap movie give you a false impression.

Book 1,2, and 3 available for instant viewing. Thanks for the alternative, which by all accounts I've seen, is supposed to be quite good.

I hope they get a new director if they're really aiming for the full 3 books. Series was good and I'd sit through 3 hours of it.
sageerrantJul 10, 2010
I hope they do a reboot if they're aiming for the full three books.
railzJul 10, 2010
A reboot of what, even the first one? At this point the second one would have to be over the top on its bending and really emphasize character development on toph and aang. Aang needs a reboot - his characterization in the movie couldn't be further from the show. If they ruin toph, they have no chance. She made the second season.
skull24Jul 10, 2010
It will make the money back and M. Night will make another movie. I guess that's why they it show business.
bernlin2000Jul 10, 2010
True fans of the show will probably still see it, even knowing the horrendous reviews it got. I enjoyed the show and I knew it would be bad the minute I heard M. Night s**t-movie-alon was directing. He hasn't made a good movie in 10 years, and habits are hard to break.

M. Night s**tmalan's The Last Movie (that he will ever make)
blindtetraJul 10, 2010
This movie had sooooooo much potential... I only managed to enjoy my two hours of watching it by doing two things : reading the reviews prepared me to set my standards to a new low (good thing too...) and by fending off one "wtf!" reaction after another. So I ended up just enjoying the bits that made me think "wow, this could have been like this... or like that...", tricking myself into watching this movie as if I was watching a two hour trailer of something that could have been mega awesome. Second hyped movie disappointment after the Wolfman.

I admit that I was a fan up until The Happening. I don't really have an interest in seeing The Last Airbender in the theater, not really because it's gotten bad reviews but I'm just not that interested. I know nothing about the source material (that dates me a bit). I'll Netflix it tho.
