Well, I would hope this kind of stuff isn't happening in the US, or anywhere else in the Civilized World, for that matter. Most of these using force against someone's will. That someone being the child. So it's certainly not laissez faire capitalism. Yes I understand that a kid could get talked into working in a coal mine or as a mill scavanger. But there is no market for (or reason for) whipping boys without monarchs (no monarchs in capitalism), castrati without a ridiculous prohibition on women in theater (not capitalism), and while we may still need chimney sweeps, the article does make it clear that was forced labor, i.e., slavery (again, not capitalism). Oh yeah, and Loblolly? That's some pirate s**t (not capitalism). Capitalism doesn't mean going back in time folks. Modern capitalism wouldn't look like those days. We use technology to work for us, not children.

Its kinda sad but it seems to be part of human nature to do these types of things. Look at china and other countries without regulations against using children like this. From an evolutionary standpoint it actually makes sense to exploit excess people to do this dirty work.

Just a note. This has nothing to do with capitalism. All people have the basic natural rights: Private property (including your body), and the right to defend it. Most of these children were either tricked or forced into these jobs. There is no mutual exchange and thus it is not capitalism. Capitalism truly came about during the Industrial Revolutions. I'm not justifying anything from the article. Most of the jobs in the article involved children whose lack of rights was being exploited. I'm saying kids having their nuts cut off is not capitalism because there is no mutual exchange, no agreement between the parties involved. I mentioned the Industrial Revolution because the same mistake is taken with capitalism here as well. Children's lives improved during the IR because they could afford to feed themselves. You cannot compare the lives of children during the IR to now but instead to before the IR when they were more likely to die of starvation or sickness on a farm.

You are confusing the ends and the means. The means of children living longer was that they were not starving to death; they could buy food with money made in the factories. In Nazi Germany there was lower crime because criminals were thrown in camps as well as other fascistic methods.
I'm saying that blaming capitalism is incorrect because it was capitalism that allowed children to work for money. Children who were forced to work or do some other horrible task (as in the article) were not involved in capitalism.

I was afraid my reference to the Industrial Revolution would be misconstrued. Children being exploited is wrong. Most of the "jobs" mentioned in the article were forced upon children. It is a monstrous thing. I'm saying that over time things have gotten better for children not because of regulation or child labor laws but instead because of capitalism. Children went from dying of sickness and starvation in rural areas to living longer lives working in factories. I'm not saying it doesn't suck when children die.

I liked the article, though it seemed they focused mostly on boys. The thoughts of being married away at 12 or 13 to a much older man, having to do whatever he says, and not being taught really about what being a wife entails... now that's a scary "job" worth at least no. 3 on that list.

I just think back to the jobs I've had and think how lucky I am now. In the past some of my jobs consisted of
1) Washing dishes
2) Cleaning public restrooms at a mall
3) scraping up sludge under dumpsters.

I really wish they'd written that as 'hotdog juice" or even "hot-dog juice". The idea of spilling dog juice, hot or otherwise makes me feel distinctly odd..
