while the entire situation is horrible and its fairly certain that van der Sloot killer her, I can't help but ask how amphetamine plays a role in any of it. Even if she was forced to take it, its not as though it would impair her from being able to resist the attack or understand what was going on.

Because he was the lead suspect(and actually admitted to it later) in the Natalie Holloway trial. Which was an international story since she was American and it happened in Aruba.

He obviously did it, but the investigators are hurting their case with all of these that magically appeared in her system after the fact. He's gotten off once, and if they keep mismanaging this case he'll get out of it again.

He could of slipped her the amphetamines, but my money is that she took them willfully. No telling what "drug" it really was, there are many forms of amphetamines.

One thing that is constant among all amphetamines is that they increase the heart rate, make you more alert, also more likely to feel paranoid and not trust the person you're with. In most people those last two would be very subtle effects, but in some people they would be quite pronounced.
There's absolutely no chance that he 'slipped' her the drugs deceptively, it would make the victim more alert, stronger, louder, more confident, and possibly quite paranoid. That's like a mugger handing you a kevlar vest and a baseball bat before asking for your cash.
I think the police in this case are making a mess of it, and given that this guy's from a money family, it wouldn't surprise me in the least if he gets off due to some technical mistake by the cops.

Amphetamines aren't s**t. She probably just did some dexedrine or something. Hell, she could have taken some vick's vapor inhaler. Either way she certainly wasn't drugged, there is absolutely no point in doing that.

Ok, this guy is a sick serial killer (by virtue of killing on the anniversary of Holloway's death)--- but why would he give her amphetamines? Those only make you more hyper rather than slow you down into a state where you are vulnerable. News reports say she liked to gamble... I am betting that she took them herself so she could power through some nights of non-stop gambling...just saying is all..
