He's a lot better than that ape puppet a few years back. His name escapes me at the moment.
On topic: I don't give a s**t what Obama's personal religious beliefs are or whether he is religious at all. When I apply for a job, there's no question on the application that asks me my personal religious views or even my sexual orientation. So, why the hell does Barack Obama have to divulge personal details which have nothing at all to do with his competence relating to the job of being the President of the United States? I understand that people want a President that they can relate to, but right now we're living in very dire times, and I would have hoped that everyone, even those who care a lot about trivial information such as religious affiliation, would be willing to set aside their qualms and cooperate in order to get our country, and by extension the rest of the world, out of this financial rut.
Instead, we have division. And it's hateful and embittered, on both sides. On this site I see people being so rude to each other. Why? Do you guys think sarcasm is going to remedy the situation or just boost your egos? A house divided will not stand. The United States is embroiled in the turmoil of aggressive partisanship, something that the founding fathers feared would happen if political parties dominated the political process.
President Obama shouldn't have to tell us his religious views, and he shouldn't have to have any or to pretend that he does. As long as he can do the job, that's all that matters. Unfortunately, progress is slow because political opponents are bringing needless bulls**t into the media to impede recovery. They'd rather see the country fall than have it recover under a Democrat.
And another thing: I seriously don't care for this US Citizen requirement for being Potus. It's not important to me. It makes no sense at all. If a man or woman has the skill and desire to be the President, he/she should not be shot down by a nationalistic code.

so he's a converted Muslim then
born Barack Hussein
Barack = Arabic for 'blessed'
Hussein = the grandson of the Prophet of Islam, Mohammed (he was the first person ever named Hussein)
"Hi, my name is Christopher Christianson, but I want you to know that I'm totally Jewish!"
Possibly - by conversion. But I've never heard of any Jewish parents giving their kid that name.
"Hi, my name's Henry Martin Luther, but I want you to know that I'm a full Roman Catholic!"
Maybe - through conversion. But I've never heard of any Roman Catholic parents giving their kid that name.
"Hi, my name's Mohammed Al-Islamiya, but I want you to know that I'm a fully practicing Christian!"
There may indeed be Christians with Mohammed as their first name, but they likely wouldn't have been born to Christian parents who named them Mohammed.
As an atheist, I feel there are better ways to acquire credibility than merely through family name. That would of course involve having a career track record that was suitably accomplished to measure upto the Oval Office. Oh, but Johnny-Come-Lately Obama doesn't even have that. He's just a local state legislator who got vaulted to the presidency because of his skin color. He doesn't even have a track record of accomplishment worthy of the Presidency. He's basically the most inexperienced President ever. The left-wing Norwegian parliament gifted him a Nobel prize without even any accomplishments to his name. What a joke.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
johndiAug 22, 2010
By the time Barack Hussein Obama II was born his father was an atheist. He was not born into a Muslim family. He just happens to named after his father. Many Arabic Christians have names that would be considered Muslim to the average westerner because of cultural afinity, not religious afinity. Arabic =/= Muslim
sanmanAug 22, 2010
I'm an atheist too, and it's a shame that dad's atheism didn't give him the sense of responsibility to stick around to help raise his son. Behavior like that makes atheists look like a bunch of deadbeats - certainly, a father who doesn't stick around to be part of his son's life is.
As an atheist, I'd really prefer to distance myself from such deadbeat behavior and call it out for what it is. A person has to behave responsibly in life, and doing a disappearing act while your kid grows up isn't at all the right thing to do.
Somebody should build a Barack Obama Walk of Shame, as a warning to deadbeat fathers everywhere. I certainly wouldn't associate such a name with greatness, or worthy of emulating.

What you saw is a day-time talk show in the United States where they take a couple who has a baby and put them on the show. The interest factor is that the supposed father doesn't think he is the father and therefore shouldn't be responsible for expenses and parenting responsibilities while the mother says otherwise.
They do a paternity test where the results are read live on the show. The best episodes tend to be those that include black people as they tend to get so much more animated for some reason.

berkanaAug 22, 2010
Willfully deceitful more than ignorant. A minister I used to respect went on some radio show and insisted that Obama had to be a Muslim for whatever list of reasons. I e-mailed him and told him it was unbefitting for him to politicize his ministry and to smear someone like that, and he responded to me by pointing out all the years Obama remained in Jeremiah Wright's church congregation. The level of mental dissonance these people are able to maintain is unbelievable.

You have been seriously misinformed about Islam. It is a fundamental tenant of Islam to believe in all the prophets. So, as long as someone is a true Muslim he/she believes in Jesus, Moses, Abraham just as much as they believe in Muhammad.
Say, "We believe in GOD, and in what was sent down to us, and in what was sent down to Abraham, Ismail, Isaac, Jacob, and the Patriarchs, and in what was given to Moses, Jesus, and the prophets from the Lord. We make no distinction among any of them. To Him alone we are submitters."
panthusdireAug 22, 2010
you are correct sir!
itwasonlyajokeAug 22, 2010
That is not in the context I was referring to. As far as I can tell, Obama is saying he believes in him to forgive his sins. That is different from saying he was a great prophet or such.
Seriously, buy some reading glasses.
Closed AccountAug 22, 2010
What I was responding to was "No Muslims that I know of would ever say that they believed in Jesus Christ".
Muslims believe that Jesus Christ was a true prophet/messenger of God just as Abraham, Moses, Muhammad, and other prophets. Islam is a monotheistic religion and believing in Trinity would contradict that belief. Islam considers Christ's birth as a miracle just as the birth of Adam and Eve, they did not have any parents so would that make them Gods too? Also, Islam does not admit or deny resurrection. Islam does not guarantee redemption for anyone just because they claim they are Muslims. And, in Islam no one can take away another's sins, every soul is answerable for itself. IMO, in essence Quran does not ask you to do things much differently than the Bible. However, I have not read the Bible so I shall not make any tall claims to that effect.
Everyone has their own beliefs and I respect that, even the ones that do not believe their is any God. I do not think that it is my job to judge anyone. I was just trying to explain to you what I thought you had misunderstood, however, I did not intend to offend you. I apologize if I did.
itwasonlyajokeAug 22, 2010
I suggest you read the Bible, because in it, Jesus says he can forgive sins. I'm not understanding why Muslims would recognize him as a true prophet - I would think they would say he is a liar, because who he claims he was is in direct contradiction to the beliefs they have.
I also think that many of them do not even know Jesus' exact teachings, or they wouldn't say he was a great prophet. To be a great prophet, you have to be "right." If Jesus was a true messenger of God, you would have to believe what he said. What he said is completely different from what the Muslims I know of believe.
Closed AccountAug 23, 2010
You are right that most of us do not know Christ's teachings. I have been thinking about reading the Bible for a while, and I did try it once but the version I picked up was a bit difficult to understand, English not being my primary language. The way it works is Muslims believe that the teachings of Christ were distorted by people over time for their own benefit, the reason there was a need for another prophet. Muslims believe that there has been just one religion throughout, the religion of Abraham, and all the rest is it's evolution. It is the people who love to create differences, and hence branched out in to different religions. Again these are just the Muslim beliefs and I for one do not think rest of the world has to agree with it.
I want to make a request to you do not take Islam to be what most of the Muslims these days portray it to be. Most of the us these days haven't even ever read or tried to understand the Quran, so most are non-practicing so called Muslims.
As for forgiveness, that is something only God can do or the person/persons you have wronged. Though the famous quote is eye for an eye, and life for a life, but that is to serve justice. Quran does time and again advise it's followers to be forgiving, and insists forgiveness is the better path to take.
Another Islamophobic propaganda I would like to dispel is the notion that Islam orders Muslims to kill the infidels. That verse was in reference to a particular event in history, where the Muslims had made a pact with the inhabitants of Medina to unite in defending the city in case it were ever attacked. But, when that did happen some people broke that pact and started conspiring with the attackers. The Muslims were then ordered to find them and kill them till they give up their evil, conspiring ways. And the very next verse tells them not to exceed their limits once the planners have quit conspiring, as God does not like transgressors.
Again the purpose here is not to prove to you that Islam is the ultimate truth or anything. Just that we are being victimized, and we are at a low point in our history. And, though I do agree a few Muslims these days are not the best people you would want to interact with, but not all of us are like that. And thanks for your replies. The solution to these problems is not violence and hostility, but an intelligent dialogue and an understanding of each others point of view.
itwasonlyajokeAug 23, 2010
Wow, excellent explanation. Thanks for your comment.

p0rtakal2Aug 22, 2010
In fact, Islam says that you can't be a muslim if you don't believe all the prophets. Including Jesus.
itwasonlyajokeAug 22, 2010
What does that even mean? If you believe in Jesus, would you not have to believe he is God in the flesh? Would you not also have to believe that what he said to do and believe is pretty much in contradiction of many things the Quran says to do?
p0rtakal2Aug 23, 2010
According to Islam, the Bible which was sent to Jesus was true. But then it changed and corrupted. So Muslims believe in Jesus, but not like the Bible described him. He's not the God in the flesh. He's a just a human. Like other prophets.
itwasonlyajokeAug 23, 2010
So the direct quotes from him in the Bible are lies? Why not just believe the entire thing is a lie?
4bitAug 23, 2010
@ItWas why believe the whole thing is completely true?
It's just how they believe it. Why do you believe it the way you do?
Haven't you ever agreed with someone... mostly... but thought they were wrong on some part? If, say you disagreed with me on this, would 2+2=4 suddenly be a lie just because I said it?

davenp0rtAug 22, 2010
I wouldn't be surprised if he is an atheist. Politicians have to appeal to their constituency to get elected and the majority of Americans are Christian, so there has to be at least a few atheists pretending to go with the flow.
murmandamosAug 22, 2010
although the less educated you are, the more likely you are to be religious. looking at our current selection of representatives, i think it's a fair assumption that they are all idiots so they might be religious. personally though, aside from the really freaky southern reps, i imagine most liberal reps pretend to be religious to help maintain electability, and most conservatives use religion in a more aggressive way, but ultimately similarly to garner support.
gooblyAug 22, 2010
US Congress does not properly represent the demographics of the country in any respect. About 50.76% of the United States is female - therefore, of the 532 seats in the House of Reps 270 or so should be women. In reality, only 92 (17%) are.
Closed AccountAug 22, 2010
I would be, actually--you don't regularly attend services at a church for that many years without *some* belief. At most, I think he could hold looser Christian/religious beliefs, much as (many of) the Founding Fathers were deists.
danielhunterAug 22, 2010
Obama is probably a skeptic of some sort. Agnostic or atheist. He was raised by a skeptic (his mother was a fallen Christian that distrusted organized religion), and his father became an atheist after being a Muslim for much of his life.
And as was mentioned above, there is a direct correlation between atheism and intelligence. Considering how smart Barack is, he is probably an atheist that stays in the atheist 'closet' since he knows he'd lose most of his constituency.
At least, as a non-believer, that's what I'd like to believe.
gooblyAug 22, 2010
Eh... here you are doing the exact same thing that all the people calling him a Muslim are. You are speculating about what his "true" intentions or feelings are with no regard for what he says and does.
Obama says he is a Christian and apparently prays and goes to Church. Why can't we just accept that he is a Christian? Don't get me wrong - I'm not cheering for Christianity or anything. I'm also a nonbeliever.
What really bothers me is that everyone thinks they know the real truth.
frankoceanAug 22, 2010
Nop, he's a Christian, know people who has pray with him, at his request.
You can still be intelligent and be a Christian you know?.
danielhunterAug 22, 2010
@goobly Except I'm not making assumptions about him based on his race or based on my bigoted views of other religions.
But, to some extent, some of Obama's religious detractors are right. How many presidents have been seen in church as little as he has? Very few, I imagine.
Anyway, he's a smart dude. If I was in the position to be a big political figure, like a senator or president, I'd probably lie about my religion. It's really the only way to get any non-believers in office until the current bunch of old people die off.
gooblyAug 22, 2010
I don't buy it. This all seems like wishful thinking on your part. Obama has repeatedly said that he is a Christian, and lacking evidence to the contrary I think we should take him at his word.
Arguing against his stated religion is, whether you like it or not, lending credibility to people who say they know his religion affiliation (be it Muslim, atheist, whatever) better than he does.
danielhunterAug 22, 2010
Let's think of one possible reason he wouldn't state his true beliefs... Uh, because he wouldn't get elected?
Are you implying politicians should be taken at their word? That's a funny concept.
And I'm not saying I know his religious affiliation. Just that it wouldn't be surprising at that it is, from a statistical standpoint, more likely than most people think.

Historically, Jews maintained a presence in many more Iranian cities. Just what prohibition is there for christians living in muslim countries (excluding Saudi Arabia)? There are thriving christian minorities all accross north africa and east Asia. The problems in Indonesia are very recent. For the most part its easier to be a Christian in Morocco than it is to be a Muslim in the US.
Here is an article written in 1992 explaining the need for the US government to "create" the threat of Islam:
http://www.cato.org/pubs/pas/pa-177.html
The people who support and wrote that article have been pretty successful since then at stoking the fires of hate and paranoia on both sides. There is more going on here than meets the eye but predictably too many of us are content to be spoon feed our information by people who obviously have an underlying agenda.

If the Republicans want to get back a smart base, they'd do no harm seeking Muslims, as they are an exact match for about 96% of their philosophy. I mean, they are commanded by Quiran to make profits, and be charitable. None of that begger nor a lender be nonsense.

tsk05Aug 22, 2010
Berkana,
I guess if you're under the assumption it's the same 1/5th. I belong to two of those 6.
With regards to health reform, the US can't do it right, too many people paid off. (Note that universal healthcare is not right as far as I am concerned). I'd rather we leave it alone than implement something like what we just did, which admittedly raises premiums even higher and is only cheaper through subsidies, which in turn we pay and which in turn makes the government more powerful (controlling health is a very nice string to pull).
I am also against net neutrality. One the one hand, the oligopoly we have should pay us back for all the money we spent building the infrastructure, on the other hand, anything the government gets its hand on ends up being censored. See FCC and radio, the original point was to protect "us" from evil corporations. I'd rather eat the loss and have the internet free than the reverse. Of course, some people trust the government more than corporations. I do not - and the reason most people do not trust corporations is that they do evil things but those evil things are all done in collusion with the government (ie, the oligopoly we have now, where the government doesn't approve any new fiber unless it's being built by the large corporations), so why would I trust the government which can screw everyone sideways without needing to collude over the corporations which must first receive approval from the government?Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

"(Note that universal healthcare is not right as far as I am concerned)."
You're allowed to have your opinion, but I'm allowed to ask you to explain it. Why is universal healthcare not right?
tsk05Aug 22, 2010
Regarding net neutrality, strong argument you have there melikbilge and hatdrop.
Regarding universal healthcare, for starters, because we can't afford it. And pointing to other countries which have lower costs (for the government) isn't proof or even evidence that universal healthcare is going to cut costs in this country. If they started universal healthcare and then costs fell from before, that's evidence. It is logically absolutely impossible for universal healthcare to decrease government debt - the money to pay for it has to come from somewhere. The only way to decrease the debt with universal healthcare is if the government increases taxes beyond costs but I don't think that's what universal healthcare proponents want.. Second reason is as I mentioned previously, way too much power to the government. Third reason is that previously tried massive government programs in this country have all failed (ie, are in debt): medicare, medicaid, social security. hatdropAug 23, 2010
well if you want an actual argument, how bout the fact that the internet is the last bastion of true freedom of speech? sure i may be a leftist but everyone should be allowed to disseminate what ever type of information they want to regardless of political agenda. to allow telecoms to throttle access purely out of political reasons is inherently undemocratic and only practiced in fascist/communist states. broadband access being finite is also a joke/flat out lie, go to other developed countries with larger internet consumption and they still have better data transfer rates, transfer rates over here are falsely capped just like gas prices are also artificially inflated.
so yes if you are against net neutrality you are against freedom of speech, a true free market, equal and fair access, and therefore mentally deficient.

1/4 of Americans support Sarah Palin
1/3 of Americans support the Tea Party
1/2 Americans oppose health reform.
3/5 Americans oppose gay marriage.
1/3 supported Gearge Bush
3/5 Americans oppose net neutrality
Check your data man.

Oh, my god. It's worse than we thought. According to this new data, at least 1/4 of the US is retarded.
murmandamosAug 22, 2010
i don't think you need to use the lowest to get the minimum, since these are basically all-or-nothing topics, that if you fall into the fraction, you simply ARE retarded. for example, you have to be retarded to oppose gay marriage and net neutrality, either one, so at least 3/5 of the us is retarded.

Coming from a left of center person, I think that some of the tea party's basic principles as far as government spending goes are OK. But their ideological views I cannot follow.
We're told to be smart with our money, but the government (read: politicians) spend like drunken teenagers with their parents' black card. Whether it is tax and spend liberals or borrow and spend neo-cons, they are both leading us down a road that goes nowhere.
jcolt84Aug 22, 2010
Dude f**k the tea party until they follow Ron Paul. How can you be against wasteful spending and support these wars. The CIA claims there are 100 "terrorists" in Afghanistan and we have 100,000 troops with tanks over there. Something don't add up but these Obama loving diggers keep lovin. They were so anti war till Obama took office and changed nothing. The Tea Party as well as the Republican Party have been hijacked by NeoCons.

1. There is a huge difference between the actual tea party and the right wing morons who claim to be a part of the tea party and show up all over the news. The Tea Party movement is supposed to be about low government spending, rights of the states, etc. The people you see on the news do not know what the f**k they are talking about and have no business associating themselves with any "tea party" movement.
2. I support Health Care reform but I do not support the abortion of a health care bill that was passed by Congress that forces citizens to buy the product of a private corporation. Sorry. If I want to take a risk it's my risk to take. Driving is a privilege so please don't even TRY to use that as an example. The federal government has no authority to force me to fork out my money for the services of a private company.
3. There are legitimate concerns that many people have with the issue of net neutrality. It is not as cut and dry as you would like it to be. I support new net neutrality legislation but I tread carefully. This is the perfect opportunity for the federal government to assume new powers over the internet and exchange of information that they never had any business controlling. I don't want broadband treated as a public utility where the government starts over-regulating it.
Furthermore, if you can't understand or respect other peoples opinions or thoughts on the matter you really aren't any smarter than the people you are calling "retards."

It may also come as a shock that intelligence metrics are in themselves controversial and that tests and scores are usually modified to fit people to a standard distribution, meaning that what is considered "average" may not actually reflect reality for whatever definition of "intelligence" we use.

I'd vote for a Scientologist if he or she can [somehow] prove they are the right person for the job. A majority of Americans voted Obama in and essentially hired him to be president because he was the best man for the job. I think any candidate that proclaims their faith should be disqualified and it should not be asked by any journalist. There needs to be a complete separation from church and state. This practice is not done when hiring someone for any other job. It is 100% illegal. Could you imagine not hiring someone because of their faith? Islam is handed down from the father by belief not by heredity. Since man is the head of the household, decision-maker, what have you, he determines the religion the family practices. This is why Muslim women may not marry Christian men, otherwise reverse is okay because the wife may convert and/or stfu. Judaism is passed down through the mother, by heredity, because it is clearly obvious who the mother is, but not always who the father is

Because there's a huge chunk of voters who don't concern themselves much with politics, but would never vote for anyone who doesn't hold the same religious beliefs as they do. If you convince them that one of them is of a different religion, the other guy gets their vote by default. It's as it has always been... those in power use religion to manipulate the masses.
