13. When Liberals whine about Fox News being biased, point out the difference between Commentators and NEWS reporting. Commentators like Beck and Hannity COMMENT on the news while news reporters like Major Garrett REPORT the news. Ask them if they believe that PMSNBC is not biased. They usually STFU. Anyone who thinks Olbermann reports the news and isn't biased the ultimate Liberal MORON. The only place Olbermann should be is an insane asylum. The difference between "commentators" and "newspeople" on FOX is a matter of degrees. Sure, Major Garrett isn't as openly biased as Beck, but it's obviously there. I mean, did you SEE the interview with Obama? He wouldn't let the Presicent get a word in.
And next time you want to argue the "newspeople" on FOX aren't biased, watch Megan Kelly sometime (if you can stomach it.) One quote of hers went something like this:

Have you seen the estimated percentages of the population that are atheist/agnostic? As an atheist and 4th year engineering student at a pretty good engineering university in the south, I wish he were lying, but I honestly would not be surprised in the least if he were actually an Aerospace Engineer. There are SO MANY fundies in engineering it's really frightening.. they're great at math, but their logic fails to extend further than their textbooks. Try and probe their intellectualism and they'll return a divide by zero error. At least they stay the f**k away from the Physics and Chemistry departments.

Yes, I fully agree that "engineers" are a vastly different breed than "scientists"... and that many times engineers are much more conservative and tend towards religious beliefs.
However, I still think he is making it all up. I have asked him numerous times questions concerning his work (e.g., "very curious that, as an aerospace engineer, what exactly do you do?"). He ignores them each and every time, while still responding to other comments.
His inability to answer a question about his supposed career leads me to believe that he doesn't think he can lie his way through a convincing statement to that one.
He *pretends* to be a scientist so he can bash it. But he has never showed ANY engineering ability in any post he has made.

I agree; Niven is a different case altogether, I just really felt the need to vent for a moment. I work in an engineering office with bosses that regularly listen to Glenn Beck, Rush, and of course have all the superficial outrage at the world as a tween who got their cellphone taken away. The dissonance is unsettling, and although there are far fewer fundies in my classes today than there were 4 years ago.. it never ceases to baffle me.

It would be pretty hard working for a place like this and still believe in a *god* and that somehow, we are special in the universe. It gets pretty f**king apparent when we peer billions of light years into the past, that we are just one tiny little insignificant speck of dust in the entire mechanics of the universe.

Minarchian - I would certainly say I have seen an awful lot of that. But truth be told, I saw a lot of that when Bush was in office from the conservatives as well. Partisan people are like religious folk. They have already turned off their minds to any other viewpoint or rational. They have already decided what is "the truth", and when things or people pop up that demonstrate the failing of their "truth", they get angry and respond with anger.
We should feel pity for them, and kindly, gently, with all the love and respect of a father - smack them repeatedly with the facts until they, and their broken partisanship lay exposed on the floor...

In most politicized situations the "facts" are impossible to discover. Therefore, we must deduce some version of the truth through whatever evidence is available. Usually, that evidence is ambiguous. Since people interpret ambiguous evidence as enforcing their previously-held beliefs, the liberal vs. conservative pissing match won't be resolved any time soon.
My point is that if you think the "facts" you hear on the news are gospel truth, I have a bridge in Brooklyn to sell you.

K1 - I would argue that philosophy's are neither good nor bad. I would further argue that what we see in government isn't a result of those philosophies, but rather the criminals in government use the philosophies to hide their true intents.
Much like Imams use Islam to make their adherents believe certain things, regardless if it has a basis in Islam or not. The problem isn't Islam, but the Imams.
Much like Priests use Christianity to make their adherents believe certain things, regardless if it has a basis in Christianity or not. The problem isn't Christianity, but those priests...
So here, the problem isn't liberalism or conservatism, but the politicians that weld those philosophies to make people believe certain things, regardless if it is part of the philosophy or not.
If the above is true, as I think it is, then even if a "libertarian" politician came in, it would be essentially no different, as any true libertarian, wouldn't, in fact probably couldn't, enter into politics, and so we would be left with a political libertarian, just as we now have political conservatives and political liberals - they would just be using the Libertarian flag to hide their own criminal intents.

I don't vote for the "cute" one or blindly for the one who is a member of some group that I identify with. People aren't all sheep. Some of us are concerned about more than just how some TV grifter has directed us to be terrified of the antichrist or whatever it is they're currently pimping. Many of us are immune to the cutesy "you betcha!" nonsense of the Christian agenda and actually believe in the separation of church and state. I don't call myself a liberal or a conservative, but I know a grift when I see it.
The fundamentalist conservative con artists are preying on the folks who are easy to delude with the religious promises of a "Christian Nation." And while they're careful not to mention it, they're hiding their Christian agenda behind something that only sounds like a political party hoping they can wedge it in without anyone noticing. Like what they did with creationism when they renamed it "intelligent design" in an attempt to smuggle their mythology into schools and textbooks.
Good grifters know that fear plus religion are like crack to a big chunk of the population. The enemy is the "elite" liberal scientists and politicians who want to "take away" freedom/money/health/religion and make everyone a drug-addicted hippy. An enemy you can't comprehend is the best kind because the grifter can make up anything about them (they eat babies, worship satan, etc...) and the gullible will invest in it. And if its debunked, the grifter can say it's because of the "conspiracy."

I've always thought the "Teabagger/Teabaggee" thing was pretty funny. Those making the joke (teabagees) thought they were on the "in", yet had failed to actually think it through to the end.

Actually it doesn't work because the conclusion doesn't follow from the premise. If party A says party B is a teabagger, why must it necessarily follow that party A must be the teabagee? Why can't party C be the teabaggee? If party A accuses a party B of being a thief, that does not automatically make party A the victim.

I'm not quite sure I follow. Similar tactics could be employed against people of any ideological persuasion. It's not the fact that they're liberal - it's that they blindly worship ANY ideology.

By "rest of the world" I believe Nope586 was referring to "rest of the developed world". There are certainly countries that are more right-wing than America. For example, take much of the middle east. Oh and we can't forget about Somalia, that libertarian paradise.
Kinda telling though, isn't it? American liberals want to move our country in the direction of other developed countries, like many of those in Europe. American conservatives want to move our country in the direction of God-forsaken theocratic dirt pits. Hm, which one sounds more appealing? Decisions, decisions.

I feel like only my grandmother does that....it is a bit urking. When someone calls me sweetheart I feel like they're taking liberties as to their relationship with me.
Either way, I'm a bit bothered that this lady doesn't want people to call her names, but she likes to demean others by name calling. I don't care what party shes affiliated with, she seems like a jerk :-/

I think this might be a regional thing. In the south, being called "sweetie", etc. is extremely common and extremely polite. Here in Colorado, it's both said and received most often in a condescending manner.
I was raised in the south so I like it and I get warm and fizzy when I get an honest one, but that generally only happens when I head back to Texas.
