By the end of the roadtrip they are usually well-marinated by the chiles, lime juice, and vinegar! Tasty!

They can't split the hotel bill so I don't want them with me.

Back when I worked drive thru, a woman came through in one of those ridiculously large vans that only soccer moms drive. When she got to the window I noticed a set of very large feline eyes peering at me from the backseat. I asked her if her cat would like to order, and she turned around and exclaimed "oh wow, I didn't know he was back there!" I made a joke about her cat needing to run some errands, and she replied "no, you don't understand. That is NOT my cat. I have never seen this cat before."
Didn't catch what breed he (she?) was, but he seemed perfectly content to travel :).
bobby1978Aug 15, 2010
So what did she order?
doctechnicalAug 15, 2010
It's her cat now.
nikohAug 15, 2010
That's exactly what I told her, actually :).

They left out the best: the cat that's been given kitty downers.

Lists like this are silly. While different dog breeds can be extremely different from one another in terms of their personality and temperament, different cat breeds vary little in this regard. This is due to the fact that cats haven't been as extensively bred as dogs, so not as much artificial selection has occurred within their populations. Also, the vast majority of domestic cats out there do not fall under one single breed.
doctechnicalAug 15, 2010
Every entry at every cat show thinks you're wrong.
rain12913Aug 15, 2010
Of course they do, and so do the people who make money off of those "which cat breed is for you?" shows. Still, if you have any experience with cats you know that temperamental differences between breeds are virtually nonexistent. A good way to understand this is to look at how little physical variation there is between cat breeds (when compared to dog breeds). While of course there is no direct link between physical change and personality/temperament, it's a good way to see how much less artificial selection has been performed on cats versus dogs.
CSA4everAug 15, 2010
I honestly think you are wrong. Siamese seem to have a particular type of personality, as do Manx (nasty). You seem to have some experience, but I don't think you are correct on this. Has anyone heard that black and white males (not a breed, I know), are pushy?
rain12913Aug 16, 2010
The difficulty lies in the fact that the average person is only exposed to a limited number of individual cats of each breed. When this happens, it becomes easy to over-generalize the attributes that you might have noticed in common between the (for example) two or three Siamese cats you've ever met and to assume that all Siamese are like that. Of course, you'll find people on both sides of this issue. All I'm saying is that breed is a much less useful tool for understanding the personality/temperment of cats versus how effective it is in dogs.
As for your last point: as you point out, the color of the cat is not an indication of its breed. You could have ten different black cats that are all different breeds. The genes that control for the black color of the cats are not the same for each breed; for example, a black cat of breed X will have different genes for black fur than a black cat of breed Y. For this reason, it is completely impossible for there to be any kind of behavioral or tempermental traits that are attached to "blackness", since there is no such single gene cluster for "blackness" for such traits to be clustered with. Any perceived similarities in temperment with regard to color are simply in your mind.

I find when travelling with my cat the best bet is to just no keep him in the cat carrier. If I put him into the carrier he'll spend the entire 4 hour drive from my school to home meowing up a storm, but if I let him out he just falls asleep in the back seat for the entire ride. I just stuff something under the drivers seat so he can't crawl under it and toss him back if he tries to climb into the front and he eventually just settles in and behaves.

I've driven cats cross country and while a 4 hour drive is probably tolerable for you and your cat, consider yourself lucky. I don't have cats that like travel. They only like the destinations. I tried the "free-roaming" idea but mine have pissed all over the backseat. Not a nice smell to sit into on a hot muggy summer day long after they're out of the car. From now on, I contain them in their carrier to spray down later with odor remover at the end of trip rather than them pissing all over my car. Lots of newspaper helps to soak up the mess in carriers. They usually still end up sleeping most of the way and it's kinda fun to banter with them as they talk back to you in their cages. It's like them yelling, "Are we there yet?!!" Doesn't seem to bother them although you still have to bathe them at the end of long journeys in a hotel bathtub or something because of their piss-soaked rear-ends.

i had no idea cats had such different personality traits to do with breed. amazing.
