Non-ironically, you're an idiot. "the same people angry at the new rules are probably the same people who the new rules are meant to protect against"? On what logical basis does something like that come close to making sense.
enantiodromiaJul 12, 2010
i swear, 95% of the "irony" on Digg, isn't.
it would be "ironic" if:
* the finger print scanner caused graffiti
* these measures wound up chasing away everyone but the vandals
irony requires an intent, and an unexpected outcome contrary to the intent, like a safety barrier which causes accidents.
nerysJul 12, 2010
thats right the unexpected outcome (or it SHOULD be expected if anyone reads history but we are all blind here) is that it WON'T make the park safer.

We need to be more aware of others instead of so aware of cops and security measures. They are there because too many dumbasses didn't care about the park and did whatever to make the park unsafe.

If our government and police were trustworthy
all this would not be a problem. I would gladly let them fingerprint and photo me if I thought I could trust them and it would work the way it SHOULD WORK.
but it won't they will use abuse and store the info for any purpose EXCEPT my own good and it will have almost no effect on safety.

People get way to bent out of shape over skateboarders. If you treat people like s**t, they are going to treat you like s**t. I've watched cops be dicks to skaters, and I've watched cops kindly ask them to leave an area they aren't supposed to be in. Guess how each situation ended up.
thetruthbringerJul 12, 2010
No guess needed. The skaters left in each situation. In the first case, possibly by way of the local jail and in the second case, probably by way of the local sidewalk.
travelsonicJul 12, 2010
Lemmie guess:
Situation 1: Tension, resentment, and a new found deep hate for cops.
Situation 2: Probably still had resentment in there, but overall a far more interaction on the part of the skater AND the cop.

themonikerJul 12, 2010
I skateboarded for about 5 years (age 13 - 18), with a wide variety of people and had many run-ins with police and security. I don't think that there's a generalization to be made about personalities of the police that we came across (or the skateboarders) some of the police and security were civil and courteous, some just began the encounter with swearing and threats. Similarly, some of the skateboarders were jerks and some were good people through and through.
I will agree with your observation that, the majority of the time when the security or police were respectful (though sadly, not always) they were met with respect and the situations turned out for the best in the long run for all involved.
angryredplanetJul 13, 2010
I've been a skater for a long time (the better part of the last 20 years), although not so much these days. I can vouch that the older you are the harder you fall! I've always tried to be respectful of police but some make it really difficult and just need a scapegoat to vent on.
Once I was carrying groceries home on my board and was apprehended and hauled down to the police station for being a public nuisance - not that you can do much under heavy load. I ended up stranded in the city - groceries, no money and no transport other than my board. I tried skating home again and the *same cop* pulled me over half way there only to repeat the process. My rational explanation didn't fare so well on that occasion and I was told that if caught on my board again it would be confiscated and destroyed or auctioned. Purely out of anti-authoritarian anarchism, I skated home... luckily I made it!
I've also been let off for skating on private property. I remember a large BP fuel cylinder being cut in half at the port where I was living and it was due to be shipped away. I jumped a high fence to get in and was caught carving this big steel half-pipe structure. The cop didn't mind so much. He just said keep off the roads, don't damage anything and - funniest of all - keep it quiet!
I have a similar story skating in an emptied concrete reservoir. It was a lot of fun with easy banks to get some serious air from. The cop said two things that stick in my memory - we *should* be wearing safety equipment because it was dangerous and also that we should leave before 4.30pm when the inspector was due to arrive!!
So - yes, some good and some bad. The reasonable ones tend to get respect while the ones who aren't get vitriol and for the majority of the time this works both ways for police and skaters.
and303Jul 12, 2010
Oddly enough all of the conspiracy theorists and privacy junkies I know are all skateboarders.

firewall1Jul 12, 2010

90K over ten years (lifetime of the security system) = 9k per year
