the world is much better off without people like that anyways
dibbkdAug 16, 2010
Glenn Beck killed himself?
whitegripesAug 15, 2010
That saved the taxpayers some money.
adremaliAug 16, 2010
agreed. good riddance.
ratsgAug 15, 2010
dugg down for nytimes link.
rossisdeadAug 15, 2010
Why the mass bury? It sucks when they bug you to login just to read the story.
rain12913Aug 16, 2010
I've asked this several times before but have never received an answer: are people actually being asked to log in in order to read that story? No matter what computer I've been on, I've never had to log in to read any nytimes.com story. I've never registered or anything. Can someone explain this?
rossisdeadAug 16, 2010
@Rain: I never had the problem for the longest time, then one day it just randomly stated asking me to login. I have no idea why.
phillymjsAug 15, 2010
They ought to dissect and study his brain to see if they can figure out what made him snap like that.
I wonder what kind of effect his whole thing has had on his former fiancee... I can't imagine the thought that she could have been next would be very easy to take.
ravagedsoulAug 15, 2010
Why are you getting buried for this? We *should* try to find the underlying cause for antisocial behavior, so that it can be corrected before terrible things happen.
Perhaps people are afraid that if murderers turn out to be actually sick, then we won't be able to hate them quite so much, or be able to harshly punish them.
goweigusAug 15, 2010
What you have said makes me think of when I took all the psychology classes I could back in high school
I was kinda of sad because what I learned made it very difficult to really hate anyone for anything
themapleboyAug 16, 2010
exactly if they say people are predisposed (or hardwired) to be gay, why not make the same assumptions about criminals and pedophiles. (not trying to say homosexuals are comparable to criminals just saying the idea your brain can be hardwired differently should be explored)
hippykillerAug 15, 2010
If you are interested in that sort of thing here some interesting info on the matter. http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=128339306
rain12913Aug 16, 2010
There is much research being done into the neurobiology of antisocial personality disorder. However, we need not use his brain in particular, as the prison population already provides great research opportunity. No, I'm not talking about killing prisoners and dissecting their brains, I'm talking about neuroimaging and other studies that they're doing to figure out what's physically different between the brains of those who haev no feelings and normal people.
shingoexAug 15, 2010
Article reads "likely suicide"
Actual article says "A former medical student accused of killing a masseuse he met through Craigslist committed suicide".
Then goes on to say "Authorities will investigate to determine the facts and circumstances surrounding his death"
WTF
He may have killed himself, but did kill himself, yet we're figuring out if he killed himself or not.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
akairennAug 15, 2010
Well, it may look like a suicide, but they have to check to be sure it wasn't like, ghosts or something. f**king ghosts.
shingoexAug 15, 2010
Then why say it is one without knowing for certain? That was the point of my post.
shingoexAug 15, 2010
God, people here are idiots who don't understand basic context.
ricoduedAug 15, 2010
If authorities didn't investigate every unusual death properly, staging a murder as a suicide would be way, way easier.
"Oh, look. It's an obvious suicide."
"Case closed. Next!"
shingoexAug 15, 2010
Then why say "A former medical student accused of killing a masseuse he met through Craigslist committed suicide". if they aren't sure if he committed suicide or not???
THAT'S THE POINT OF MY POST DERPComment is buried, click here to see the rest.
ricoduedAug 16, 2010
"Authorities will investigate to determine the facts and circumstances surrounding his death"
That's what I was replying to. It *is* likely to be a suicide, but the cops couldn't ever state for sure "Oh, yeah, it's a suicide" before doing their homework and actually investigating it. The article is just making the safe assumption that it is a suicide, because, under the circumstances, it'd be pretty hard to stage a suicide like that perfectly, considering the prison probably logs every single door opening and closing, etc.
tl;dr: article can say whatever the hell it wants, cops are bound to actually investigate things regardless and can't just jump to conclusions
shingoexAug 16, 2010
*Likely* yes, but the article says he DID, and the went on to say it's likely. There's a difference.
shingoexAug 15, 2010
I love how I'm being dugg down by people who are COMPLETELY missing the contradictions in the article, even after I quoted them.
rain12913Aug 16, 2010
@ShingoEX: Nobody missed the contradictions because there are no contradictions. It's quite obvious that this was a suicide, and that's why it's being reported as such. However, as it was already stated above, the official announcement that it was a suicide won't be made until it has been thoroughly investigated. Of course, they could just not even drop the word "suicide" at all until its official, but that's kind of pussyfooting around the truth.
shingoexAug 16, 2010
"Nobody missed the contradictions because there are no contradictions."
The title says "likely", and the article the says he did commit suicide, and then goes on to say they need to investigate more.
You need to actually read to find these discrepancies, because the article can't make up its mind if he did commit suicide, or if the investigators aren't sure.

hipmanAug 15, 2010
Better he kill himself than the jury?.What?.
atomslifeAug 15, 2010
was punning the word 'hung', as in hung jury. thanks for making me explain it; it's now even less funny.
furburgerhelperAug 15, 2010
*hanged
atomslifeAug 15, 2010
+1 for grammar, -1 because 'hanged' wouldn't have made a pun = I don't care.
stealth45Aug 15, 2010
If he hung himself, they should have invited the victims family to beat the corpse like a pinata before taking him down
cannabistAug 15, 2010
That's just barbaric. I wouldn't do that to someone's corpse, even if they killed my grandma.
And I LOVE my grandma.
trythinking1stAug 15, 2010
Yeah! and besides...beating him like a pinata would NOT release candy!
kaiosamaAug 15, 2010
You make it sound like it might've been a party.

anybody has a clue what he's trying to say? is this like a gay innuendo ?
tsk05Aug 15, 2010
You really don't understand what he said? He was trying to be eloquent and failed but his meaning is fairly clear.
dabigdawg72Aug 15, 2010

I could perhaps on potato new way to find it.

diggamyteAug 15, 2010
I've always been curious how people commit suicide in jail/prison. You don't exactly have a lot of tools at your disposal. Of course, I imagine a lot of them aren't suicides at all, but I doubt the police are going all CSI on the case to prove otherwise.
tekdemonAug 15, 2010
Well, he was a medical student and even if he was a lousy one he'd probably know how to kill himself a little more successfully than most people.
Closed AccountAug 15, 2010
You can drown in the sink or strangle yourself with a strip of linen.
Just because you are in prison doesn't mean you are sitting in a sterile steel box.
keraneuologyAug 15, 2010
Unless you have a history of suicidal ideation (even more so if you have a history of attempts) in which case you pretty much are sitting inside a sterile steel box.
There's a lawsuit in the works already and the settlement won't be cheap.
diggamyteAug 16, 2010
@EarlofLade I see your point but not sure about these examples. Drowning yourself in a sink or strangling yourself would be insanely difficult to actually do all the way. Plus, I would think more often than not you'd pass out before you died, in both cases.
alwilsonAug 16, 2010
I agree. Unless you are naked, it's pretty easy to die if you're desperate. Just wrap something around your neck that causes constriction. Eventually you will pass out and die. You don't need anything complicated like a rope or belt to hang from a beam or s**t like that. You can hang yourself from a doorknob if no comes around for 20 minutes or so. That's probably what this douche bag did.
heystoopidAug 15, 2010
Cue the usual cover ups, authorities denying guards beat and injure prisoners awaiting trial or bail, fellow prisoners paid or bribed to beat the living crap out of new fresh meat and so forth.
As for the shallow, ill conceived self promoted, self wanking comments from those far too lazy to think outside their ass and do their own basic research about the inhumane evil conditions and very bad food for all inmates in a very overcrowded detention facility called the Suffolk County Jail. A long line of alleged suicides infest that facility like the bubonic plague.
Silly ignorant head in ass wankers are out in force today!Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
meeohmiAug 15, 2010
And I think everyone's failed to mention that the guy was awaiting trial. He hadn't even been convicted yet. And irrespective of the fact that he was probably guilty, even if he had been convicted, I don't think anyone should celebrate or make light of someone taking their own life. Especially someone as sick and hopeless as this guy must've been. I'm not commenting on whether or not he "deserved it". Only that I think so many people have the wrong mindset.

fallout22Aug 15, 2010
He *supposedly* met a masseuse and afterwards *apparently* killed himself.
atoddjonesAug 15, 2010
Anybody else think of Dexter after reading the headline?
ousthouseAug 15, 2010
Since Dexter has never used Craigslist, been a suspect himself, or been dead and has never committed suicide, it's kinda hard to draw that comparison.
goweigusAug 15, 2010
well considering the trailer for the new season, he sure as hell is going to be a suspect for something
atoddjonesAug 16, 2010
Sure, but he has indeed used craigslist, and kills people doing wrong and made it look like a suicide <3 although he isn't dead, so i'll give you that one
twohoundogsAug 16, 2010
Didn't Dexter use Craigslist or something in the first season to contact the Ice truck killer?
ousthouseAug 16, 2010
Ahhh... I think you're right about Craigslist. Good call.
mario323Aug 15, 2010
This is why I don't go to craigslist.

gilgamesh999Aug 15, 2010
Sad to hear about such stories. Sounds like the guy had a lot going for him and he made some bad decisions that spiraled out of control.
kaiosamaAug 15, 2010
The only individual who made a mistake in this case was the masseuse who trusted him.
Who the hell cares about this scumbag.
wastelanderAug 16, 2010
"Some bad decisions"? We aren't taking about J-walking here.
The guy was a murdering psychopath.
There is no way someone could do what he did without having something very fundamentally wrong with their character. Thank god he never got a medical degree--who knows what he may have done. Good riddance.
dirtyfriesAug 15, 2010
This was quite the story up here in Boston. What was most interesting was how his fiancee would nightly be on the news defending him...till the videos and further evidence came out.
Then we never heard anything else out of her. This dude was toast.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
kaiosamaAug 15, 2010
That's cause she annulled the engagement.
rain12913Aug 16, 2010
Er, his girlfriend was not on the news every night defending him. In fact, I can't even remember her making any sort of public appearance. Yes, she released several press releases in the days following his arrest proclaiming his innocence, but they faded away and eventually she quieted fully. Perhaps you're living in a different Boston than I?

If he was guilty then suicide was not a bad option here for him and taxpayers as well. However, suicide watch in jail usually involves removing all objects from the prisoner that they can use to kill them selves with. Shoe laces are high on that list so somebody is not telling the truth or was not doing their job.
w1cked1Aug 15, 2010
he had a pair of shoe laces up his ass, but they mistook them for a tapeworm.
Closed AccountAug 15, 2010
But suicide watch is only activated for people who have stated they want to kill themselves or for people with sever mental illness which may lead to suicide thoughts.
A normal inmate, which I suspect this one was treated as, is not under suicide watch and have quite a bit of articles which may be used for suicide.
Closed AccountAug 16, 2010
You are correct. Suicide watch is only activated for certain inmates. In this case, if you read the second to the last paragraph it says, " was placed on suicide watch at the jail where he was being held." Because of that statement we can presume that he shouldnt have had shoe laces or any of the other usual things they take away when someone is on suicide watch.
keraneuologyAug 15, 2010
Since cops are involved the "somebody is not telling the truth" option is by default the more likely one.
penclnckAug 15, 2010
Best possible outcome for all involved.
hexrrAug 15, 2010
Reminds me of Ted Bundy. Successful, smart, (I'll guess) attractive serial killer.

Man, that must have been one s**tty massage.

When you have a sore shoulder and the masseuse starts taking off your pants, of course you are going to be upset....
StrutThatAssAug 15, 2010
Craigslist seems like a safe and freindly place to shop online. At least on eBay we did not face the risk of dying.
bigblockyAug 15, 2010
Suicide? Couldn't hire someone off Craigslist to do it for him?
jmrocketAug 15, 2010
These are just ordinary crimes. Seriously, the killers using "The Craigslists" or "The Facebook" stop being interesting years ago...
sideshowoddityAug 16, 2010
The local psych ward takes the shoelaces of their patients/inmates. Give em flip flops/velcrow shoes, or let em flop around in their sneakers without laces. It's too easy to cop out this way when you're in big trouble. He should have suffered longer.
rain12913Aug 16, 2010
Considering that he was put on suicide watch within the first few days of his arrest after being found with shoelace marks on his neck, I kind of doubt that he did it with shoelaces.
