A couple of these friends have killed people in Iraq. I repeat, you do not know how you will feel about it until you have.
I do feel sorry for the officer if the story portrays him correctly. These are the sacrifices some people make for us. (Referring to the Officer Jesus Rios-Calderon, not the military.)

grammerpantsAug 15, 2010
No cop is trained to aim for the legs. You aim for the chest, or nothing at all.
Closed AccountAug 15, 2010
*facepalm*
You know what? You're an idiot.
heavyj1970Aug 15, 2010
You aim for center mass, firing a pistol in a controlled relaxed situation is one thing, and still hard to hit a moving target the size of a leg, you add in stress, someone trying to kill you, and the fact that you may have to kill someone, not to mention tunnel vision and hearing impairment, and it becomes a lot more difficult
tk0680Aug 15, 2010
But why didn't he hold his gun horizontally? It looks so much cooler.
clonedAug 15, 2010
Technically, you shoot to stop, not shoot to kill. It just so happens that one usually leads to the other.
You aim for center mass because that is the biggest target, and is likely to stop them.
chrisv12Aug 16, 2010
"When you fire a gun, you fire it to kill, not to wound"
You are not trained to shoot to kill. You are trained to shoot to stop the threat by aiming for the centre of the largest mass - i.e. the torso. If you are going to shoot them in the leg, you may as well use a baton as will have around the same effect.
yalskeyAug 16, 2010
"When you fire a gun, you fire it to kill, not to wound. "
In the context of police use of force, this is incorrect. When a deadly threat is displayed, and the officer is justified in his use of deadly force for self-defensive purposes, the police aim for center of mass in order to STOP THE THREAT / DANGER. If the suspect / attack dies as a result of stopping his deadly offense, that's an unfortunate side-effect of trying to stop his unavoidable violence. This is also the legal framework in the courtroom in the aftermath.

If someone's coming at you you're generally instructed (at least in the martial art/self defense classes I've taken) to shoot for the center of mass.
ceriliaAug 15, 2010
This isn't martial arts. This is a man's life, a life the man wanted to end because of the wrong choices he committed. Using a taser seems much more appropriate, but I am guessing the officer did not have one with him.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

cerilia, you've never been in a life or death situation. Stfu and Gtfo.
alexthehoopyAug 15, 2010
@cerilia I'm pretty sure you missed the point of my post. When someone comes at you, you're supposed to shoot for the center of mass, the chest. Anything else is too risky, especially at close range.
ryanissosuperAug 15, 2010
Cerilia obviously didn't read the article. The officer did have a taser, but it was on the other hip and that hand had a radio still in it. He was about to switch over when the guy charged him with a f**king butchers knife. Holy f**k you're an idiot and I hope you don't breed.
evilkrustydollAug 15, 2010
@cerilia
We put rabid dogs down, likewise I agree with putting rabid humans down.
luciddr34m3rAug 15, 2010
Because then the police would have been sued for disabling the man. It's my understanding that the training is "only shoot someone if you need to kill them". The taser is "less than lethal" force, and that would disable someone. When you are in a life or death situation, shooting to kill is the appropriate response.
I was always taught growing up that when you handle a gun, you only ever point it at things you want to die. Loaded, safety on, or otherwise.
ceriliaAug 15, 2010
Well, then taser the man. Instead of giving him what he wants and killing him!
w1cked1Aug 15, 2010
No, the taser is not "less than lethal", it's sssssssssupposedly........ "less lethal". There's a f**king difference. It is most certainly lethal.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
ammundsenAug 15, 2010
I dont think that the state would successfully be sued for disabling a man who came at a cop. But I do know that a wrongful death civil suit is cheaper than a disability suit.
luciddr34m3rAug 15, 2010
@cerilia: He said he thought about switching to his taser, but he needed to shift around his radio, and by the time he was getting charged at, it was too late. The man was wielding a lethal weapon. It was well within his rights to be wielding his, even if it is possible less than lethal force was required. I'd like to see *you* think that fast.
@w1cked1: "less than lethal" is a designation given to measures that are not intended to kill the subject they are used upon. Rubber bullets, stink bombs, tear gas, and tasers all all considered "less than lethal", but they can all certainly kill in some circumstances. A taser falls into this category of weapon. Don't bash me for using the term, I didn't coin it. The cops did. They are not lethal by design, as is the case with a gun.
daleksarewimpsAug 15, 2010
Because you don't aim for appendages that are only a few inches wide and easier to miss than center mass shots.
dshadowwolfAug 15, 2010
Training for military and police is the same - you don't aim for the head or the extremities - you aim for the center of mass. It has been this way for a long time - and officers that have tried a "disabling shot" in the past have found out the hard way that some people are either too drugged or too immune to pain for it to really stop them. (There are too many reports of people on drugs like PCP shrugging off shots from pistols that didn't hit in a lethal spot like the chest)
ceriliaAug 15, 2010
Thanks. This is the best explanation I've read so far. Although, it would make sense to use a taser instead if the officer had one with him, right? I would imagine that the man would have been disabled by a taser regardless of possible drug use?Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
Closed AccountAug 15, 2010
No, why do you think you see videos of copies zapping a drugged out addict multiple times? Because when you can't feel pain, you can't feel pain.
Not to mention, a taser is NOT someone you use when you're in a life or death situation. When someone who has already killed a person is approaching you with a knife, you take that motherf**ker down. Because it's either you or him, and you're better off going with you.
tk0680Aug 15, 2010
Psst: A Tazer isn't used to inflict pain, it's used to confuse the nervous system. The pain is a secondary effect.
dshadowwolfAug 15, 2010
RTFA, please. The cop had a Taser - in a left-side holster. He had his radio in his left hand and had just decided to switch the radio to his right hand when the man charged. Since he was left without time and his right hand was already on his service pistol, Officer Rios-Calderon drew and fired. That action kept him from being injured by the man charging him and might actually have saved his life. All in all it is another sign that proper training for military and police actually saves lives.
ahnteisAug 16, 2010
Guns are for killing. You never, ever point a gun at something you aren't prepared to kill. (If it's killing a target, that's fine -- same rule applies.)
If it comes down to a gun being required, then you're past the point of incapacitation. If you would read the article, it explains clearly why this was the only option open to him.
iskinAug 16, 2010
I don't know how many shots a tazer has but a gun will have 8+, and I'm certain that is more than a tazer. You're going to want to use a gun in a life or death situation, simply because you wont hit your target every time.
It's hard to properly train for life or death situations, especially the ones where razor thin decisions have to be made quickly. You can't replicate the stress, and people handle it differently. Drill instructors yell throughout boot camp to create stress but being yelled at isn't the same as someone trying to kill you. Muscle memory, is also a big part of training to reduce the effects of stress, and a lot of muscle memory training focuses on your primary weapon, so one would be most comfortable making split decisions with their primary weapon.
brucealmightyAug 15, 2010
Gee, why not just shoot the knife out of his hand? Read it again and note that even after the first shot to the chest the guy continued coming until he thought he might have to shoot him again. A (probably) 9mm slug does not have a lot of stopping power to start with and "winging" a someone in a crazed state like that probably wouldn't even slow them down until it was too late to matter. Actually, he showed admirable and unusual restraint in only firing once - it's very common for cops in that kind of situation to empty their pistols without even realizing it until afterward.
ceriliaAug 15, 2010
Fair enough, it sounds that the officer dealt with the situation in the best manner, considering what he had at his disposal. Though, this seems like an ideal case to carry a taser around.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
tokeliAug 16, 2010
@cerillia. Way to not read the article at all. He had a taser but didn't have time to switch his radio to his other hand so he could grab it. He could only get to his pistol instead.
bicolanoAug 15, 2010
I wouldn't Monday morning quarterback something like this. The officer had to make a split second decision. It was a high stress situation. There was no time to think, "let's see, should I shoot his arm or leg". I'd say he made the right decision considering the circumstance. Though he says he's put the incident behind him, I hope the officer comes to truly realize that he did the right thing.
ceriliaAug 15, 2010
I agree. He seems to really care about the consequences of his actions. I wish him the best.

@cerilla why are you getting dugg down?
threejalapenosAug 17, 2010
because he didn't bother to read the entire article before posting comments :/
darkray16Aug 16, 2010
I've had some firearms training, and let me tell you, even in a perfectly calm situation in a shooting range, hitting a target with 3 seconds for aiming in the leg from 20 feet away is no easy task. Factor in the adrenaline, less than a second to 1. unholster, 2. aim and 3. fire, then you aim for the chest.
movies and tv make shooting a gun stupidly easy. in reality, it's not easy to shoot someone within 10 feet of you.
brucealmightyAug 16, 2010
Yup. At times like this it's not about finesse, it's just about survival. When you suddenly realize you are only seconds away from being killed you either take the best shot you can to avoid that fate....or else you die. It's not a game and there are no second chances.
black27696Aug 16, 2010
You never shoot unless you have the intent to kill. Never shoot to wound. Statistically, anyone that you might need to shoot that's advancing is most likely on some sort of mind altering substance, and even if they aren't the adrenaline is enough. Unless you physically drop them where they stand, they will keep advancing. He probably didn't even feel the shots.

Because it is in fact murder suicide. They intend to murder someone. They have their reasons, but then they are too weak or too mentally disturbed to face the consequences of their own actions, they take the easiest path out.
campcampingstonAug 16, 2010
It can be the inverse as well. Someone who really wants to commit suicide has no fear of consequence so they might figure "why not take someone with me".
Closed AccountAug 16, 2010
Why weak? I'll bet you don't have the balls to cap yourself even if it was to save the closest person to you.
eastshoresAug 16, 2010
@anonymous10, you can try to put a rationale of your own into what I said, but I am think there are things in life, that are much harder than dying. My mother took her own life, and she didn't have the "balls" to do it, she was just sick. She was depressed and her world had become too much for her to cope with. People that fall into that class are different. To have courage enough to take your own life, I think the context is really important, it gets a lot easier if you are fearful and desperate.
Maybe I couldn't stick a needle in my arm to save someone I loved, but that is questionable, I don't know what would do in that situation. I do know I would never hesitate to put my life in jeopardy to save someone I love in an emergent situation. I know this for a fact.
krieggerAug 16, 2010
In this case it might very well be that he killed his wife and then couldn't live with what he had just done... Could also be because he knew the consequences and didn't want to face them.
In most cases with a parent killing the children (and sometimes wife) before killing themselves, it's also often because they think they're so worthless that their own offspring is a failure and all they can think of is to make it all disappear along with them.

planetexpressAug 16, 2010
Whilst I am very happy that our police force is not armed on a general basis (there are specific, firearms trained officers in the British Police, but they're not your bog-standard bobby), they also don't have to deal with a populous that you, by default, assume are armed.
frakkinbastardAug 16, 2010

I assume you're from Australia? In the US, at least in my area, cops typically work alone, but when they need to actually do something (pull someone over, investigate something, etc...) they will radio in for backup and wait until a car arrives (usually within a few minutes) and then proceed to do whatever it is they need to do. I guess in this case he didn't think he had enough time to wait a few minutes because it was suspected to be a dangerous situation where people's lives could potentially be in danger (he didn't know the specifics but he knew that the 911 call was interrupted so the caller wasn't able to stay on the phone). Good point though.

I wonder if them doing chest compressions on someone still breathing contributed to his death? All those broken ribs sure must have hurt like a bitch
chcor70Aug 16, 2010
what's that old saying better to be judged by 9 than carried by 6.
Closed AccountAug 16, 2010
There are 12 people on most criminal trial juries, not 9. Maybe you're accidentally thinking about the supreme court.
niceguyvanAug 16, 2010
I'm surprised more people aren't all anti-cop like they are in other articles.
grindelwaldAug 16, 2010
It's people's actions that define them, not who they are. That fact that they are suppose to protect and serve only holds them to a much higher standard.

Nobody f**ks with the Jesus.

"What's this day of rest s**t? What's this bulls**t? I don't f**kin' care! It don't matter to Jesus. But you're not foolin' me, man. You might fool the f**ks in the league office, but you don't fool Jesus. This bush league psyche-out stuff. Laughable, man - ha ha! I would have f**ked you in the ass Saturday. I f**k you in the ass next Wednesday instead. Wooo! You got a date Wednesday, baby!"

I've never read any articles by Rebecca Woolington before, but this was very well written - off to read more of her stuff.

People, you are missing the point. Nobody is asking 'what you would have done.' Nobody gives a damn what your judgment on the subject is. This was presented 'as is' so that you could think about it. He is sharing his experience with you so you might learn and gain the benefit of his experience without actually having to go though it.

If it was me, I would have shot the knife out of his hand and then did a cartwheel while putting a bullet in each arm; avoiding any injuries. After that, I'd come to his side and hold him in my arms while whispering "Its ok, I'm sorry I shot you. I'm so stupid, I should have risked using a tazer or baton. I quit! Lets all get high!"

Colour me crazy, but I don't think I would have a problem killing someone if my life, or my beloved's lives, depended on it. I'd have to have a good reason for doing such a thing in the first place, so I'd just be like, "yeah, I killed a guy once."
Kudos to the guy for quick reactions, and trusting in his instincts. But stories like this make me wonder about how much to the extent normal people have become so sensitive to the idea of taking the life of another. Just a few hundred years ago it was common place to have a quarrel ending up to somebody being killed in a backyard or somewhere. Sure now-a-days aren't crude and barbaric like it was back then, but once a modern person realizes that you could die at any minute in your life, you gotta consider the other way around as well.

When the split second decision comes it it always better to be judged by 12 of your peers than carried by 6 of your friends.

"The violent encounter in the restaurant was one of four officer-involved shootings in Washington County within a month, two of which were fatal."
This sentence makes it sound like the officers are the bad guys...

I would rather be judged by 12 of my peers than carried by 6 of them.

THE COPS ARE OUT ON DIGG TODAY. FORGET ABOUT HOW THEY SAVAGELY BEAT SOME KID IN DENVER YESTERDAY FOR NO REASON. GO WATCH SOME PROPAGANDA AND RESPECT MY AUTHORITAH!Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

omg caps makes you more serios!
Cops are not a single hive-minded entity. They're a group of individuals. Some are rotten, but most are decent people who are honestly trying to do right. I'm not going to let my hate of the bad cops cloud my appreciation for the good ones.
jarjarjanksAug 16, 2010
except if there were good cops, there wouldnt be any bad cops because the good cops would have made sure to get rid of all the bad ones. ya know, seeing as how cops are supposed to enforce the law across the board and not selectively for themselves. but every day it seems like there's another story about a cop abusing their authority, murdering and beating and raping an unarmed person for no reason.

in not one of those cases was a single cop punished for their crimes. and those are just the ones off the top of my head. the saying is true, one bad apple spoils the whole bunch.

Ironic that Jesus would stop a murder from killing anyone else.
Score 1 for the good guys!
