Is it just me, or is the US already showing clear signs of decay?
whatthefuAug 22, 2010
How are bedbugs a sign of decay?
becuzitAug 22, 2010
How are they not? You've obviously never suffered the ordeal that is BEDBUG INFESTATION
tevatronAug 22, 2010
Bugs? In a building in New York? This has never happened before and is most definitely a sign of end times. 2012 people.

So when bugs infest a building it means its decaying.
autokadAug 22, 2010
the fact that the US doesnt have a building in the top 10 worlds tallest buildings is a sign of decay.
zertonAug 22, 2010
It has two. And if you look at what's under construction in New York its about to have 4.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_tallest_buildings_in_the_world
autokadAug 22, 2010
forgot the sears tower didnt get pushed out yet, and didnt know about the trump one.
nolibrariansAug 22, 2010
How old are you? 12? By any real measure the US is still by far on top!
rogerstrongAug 22, 2010
Exiting the 'tallest building' race could also be a sign that America grew up. Now it cashes in by building them for others.
And it'll cash in again on the maintenance contracts.
autokadAug 22, 2010
i disagree. its a sign corporations no longer want to use US real estate because their people are over seas. a sign that taxes are too high in the cities, and labor rates are too high to construct buildings, etc. overall, its just bad. you see so many cities with empty sky scrapers now, ones you can see right through them because no one is in the office. if it takes the un-jaded view of what you would consider a 12 year old mantality to see a blatant reality, perhaps a 12 year old is better off than you with your head in the sand.
zertonAug 22, 2010
bedbugs are a sign of population density not decay
hereticoftruthAug 22, 2010
Bedbugs are a sign of dirty people not minding being dirty. You can bet rid of bedbugs in one day without chemicals if you get your filthy neighbor kicked out first.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
rogerstrongAug 22, 2010
You can and your neighbor can be the cleanest people in the world. Cleanliness makes no difference with bedbugs. They feed on blood, not garbage and dust.
Your neighbor goes to a sales or tech convention in another city. Huge numbers of hotels have bedbugs. They hitch a ride in his jacket or laundry. Or maybe he hangs his coat up at work, and bedbugs hitching a ride on another jacket transfer over. Or maybe someone visits from elsewhere, and bedbugs arrive on their coat or in a box. Maybe he moved from another apartment that was clean - but the movers' truck was some time previously - bedbugs live a year without food - used to move someone with bedbugs.
Now his apartment has bedbugs. Days later, yours does too.
You complain to your landlord. Both apartments are sprayed. You're ordered to throw out your mattress and couch, and launder all your clothes. No, you won't be compensated.
Two weeks later you're being bitten again. They came in from the walls like last time, or from another apartment that wasn't sprayed. Or maybe they hid in your speakers or under the fridge: The effective chemicals were banned because they used DDT.
You get sprayed again. And again. Did you buy a new mattress? Of course you did. Throw it out again. Eventually they spray the building. Maybe that works, maybe that doesn't.
Chances are, if you're in an older building, it doesn't. The bedbugs are in the walls, between the floors, in the wetwall and ducts, and the problem is permanant.
People move to other apartments to escape the problem. Half of them bring the problem with them.
lennybirdAug 22, 2010
It's probably a summation of many different aspects he has seen lately; bedbugs just topped it off. Care to enlighten us, webreforms?
norman619Aug 22, 2010
Ummm... Pest infestations are common place. I think it's your mind which is showing signs of decay.
charlietunaAug 22, 2010
You didn't live through the 1970s through the 1980s. Have a look at Watchmen or Kojak. Bedbugs ain't nuthin' as symbols of decay compared to the death of Kitty Genovese.

Our federal government says it is just you.
bobadobalinaAug 22, 2010

cannon49Aug 22, 2010
Ok this is getting crazy. In the past 2 days I've seen 2 bed bug stories reach the front page of digg, 1 be on the top of the cbc news website and I stayed in a university dorm where someone in my group had bedbugs in their bed.
It's like they're playing mind games with me or something.
autokadAug 22, 2010
they are becoming an epidemic in the cities =/
lolcoelacanthAug 22, 2010
So are we going to make a news article every time some bugs turn up in an 80 year old building?
Closed AccountAug 22, 2010
Sure, keeps are mind off of the minor stuff like gulf oil spill and economy in toilet.
365exportsAug 22, 2010
I agree with lolcoelacanth, Digg used to be a good news site, with reports on topics that actually matter, and now I see what it has been turned into.. honestly who cares about this.. bedbugs, really? bedbugs are relatively common (see http://cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/05/09/where-bedbugs-ride-around-besides-just-beds/) so I must ask, why is this news?? I want the old Digg back.

It says that right in the article

I dealt with them personally over a year ago. They are on the rise. That's why they are in the media so much....they are spreading. They are. You can bury me...but not the facts.
http://www.google.com/#hl=en&q=bedbugs&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbo=u&tbs=nws:1&source=og&sa=N&tab=wn&fp=7db4f7af4a13aa89
Seriously. I had them. I lost all my furniture. I don't know where in the hell they came from. I'm not fear-mongering. YOU get them and then try not to comment on articles that talk about their spread.
hellbender712Aug 22, 2010
An exterminator told me that one place many people acquire them is from hotel rooms. They will hitch a ride home with you in your luggage. He said to always ask if the place had any problems with them and by law they have to tell you.
lennybirdAug 22, 2010
wtf is with some of these comments? YOU are implying he means the end of the world; jesus christ, he's only talking about bed bugs, guys, and it's a fact-as squirkpatra said, they are on the rise, and they're nearly invincible to pesticides.
wrath017Aug 22, 2010
Quirkopatra... clean out your apartment. Maybe if you stop living like a pig, you won't have to deal with vermin infestations.
lyantoAug 22, 2010
You clearly don't know anything about bedbugs. The little f**kers feed on your blood, not random trash lying around. Your place can be perfectly clean but if you happen to pick a few up from somewhere, they're suddenly in all sorts of nooks since they're so flat and hide easily. The fact that they can live up to a year without feeding makes them even worse.
Closed AccountAug 22, 2010
"I have no bed bugs in my place. Guess why? I keep my place clean."
I have never had a roach in my house. You have no bedbugs because you are LUCKY. Quit being an ignorant s**t and coming after me personally because I've talked about the fact that I got bedbugs. Anyone can get them.....you're making me hope you're next.
lennybirdAug 22, 2010
I consider myself to be nearly obsessive compulsive when it comes to cleanliness. I need organization, and supreme personal hygiene to function efficiently.
With that said, I still had bed bugs. As Lyanto said, it doesn't matter how clean or dirty your place is, if you have one piece of furniture, and a bed--you're completely capable of getting bed bugs. The baby ones are tiny and see-through until they've sucked your blood, they can live for 6 months between feedings, are pretty resilient with temperatures, can flatten themselves-so when you roll over on them, or instinctively slap yourself, they can take it.
They're attracted to body temperature and the breathing out of carbon dioxide.
Certain regions of the U.S. have more bedbugs than others, too. This is probably why you are so lucky, Wrath.
And by the way, you're an assh**e.
wrath017Aug 22, 2010
I'm an assh**e, with a bed bug free home. You won't hear me bitching about having to throw my furniture away anytime soon. Hey Quirk, how about you just set fire to your apartment since cleaning is apparently futile?
"Oh, my place is super clean... Aside from a blood sucking bug infestation!"
Ha! Ok, Mrs. Clean.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
rogerstrongAug 22, 2010
The cleanest house or apartment will still get infested with bedbugs. It has nothing to do with cleanliness.
Though in WraTH017's case, perhaps they're repelled by stupidity.
scabnabbitAug 22, 2010
30 bedbugs agree: diggers taste better.

It is the "Statue" of Liberty and not the "Building" of Liberty. Just saying.

lennybirdAug 22, 2010
f**king bedbugs. I still have nightmares living in this one apartment in Phoenix, AZ. I went from a bed, to air mattress, to sofa--everywhere the f**kers got me. I finally curled up on my computer chair one night.

Have you tried calling you kid a little rascal and then see what he will be up to the next day?

jesushimselfAug 22, 2010
This might seem like a stupid question, but why is it the all of a sudden bedbugs have been all over the news?

ihateclownsAug 22, 2010
Tips: Don't ever let any leaves of trees/bushes touch you. Big vector for evil critters to get on you. When you buy clothes, always wash them immediately. If you ever go to a thrift store for anything, inspect whatever you bought closely. Never buy second-hand furniture. (Especially couches and bed items.) I am bedbug free. Be careful.

"That makes me think they're not cleaning when they should be, said Kazmaerczak, 23, of Buffalo. "You would think that for $20 a ticket, it should not be infested with bugs."
Yeah, totally the empire state building's fault for one of their employees bringing in bed bugs from their home. Plus it was in the basement, basically the furthest away you can be from the observation deck.

When I stay in a hotel, I always check my bed mattress for bedbugs.
rmxzAug 22, 2010
Which accomplishes practically nothing; because except when they're out eating they tend to stay in cracks in the hard parts of the furniture - apparently sometimes weeks or months at a time.
Closed AccountAug 22, 2010
No, it does help if there is a major bedbug infestation; the mattress or box spring will have noticeable bed bug feces on the corners. Yeah, you probably won't spot anything if it's just a couple but at least you can avoid the rooms that has an army of them.
I had bed bugs last year and they were clever little boogers. Turns out they were hiding underneath the hardwood flooring tiles in the bedroom and came out from between tiles when they want to feed. I hatched a plan where I sprayed the bottom of a tarp with diluted Permicide plus and covered the flooring with it, which effectively smoked them out. They had no where to go but up the walls and became easy targets to kill. Did this over and over again for a period of two weeks just to make sure nothing else was underneath.
During that period of time, I learned all I could about bedbugs and used grounded up crystal cat litter on the furniture and called in the exterminators for the bedroom and the other rooms as well.
ancientdinkoAug 22, 2010
actually bedbugs are making a huge comeback thanks to FREE STUFF on Craigslist
hey3290Aug 22, 2010
I'm suspecting these bed bugs are being planted by the same people they have to call to get rid of them
ddoornAug 22, 2010
Bedbugs are a lot like c**kroaches...which can survive nuclear blasts!
It takes intense (100 degrees plus), prolonged heat in a *sealed* environment (i.e. no walls to slip through) for 3 days to kill bedbugs. There are no safe chemicals which can kill them.
Best solution? Extreme vigilance...don't get 'em in the first place!
bracomadarAug 22, 2010
King Kong is gonna be scratchin' in the morning.

Oh! How sad to know that this creepy pesky bed bugs are also having a time spreading in Empire State Bulding. I guess they could easily kill of those bed bugs by the use of exterminators. It sounds effective, I have read about it from http://www.gettingridofbedbugs.com/ that exterminators is a way in eradicating bed bugs too.
