I have always, ALWAYS, believed that things like this were just coincidence, but for the first time it strikes me as kind of weird.

It's not that anybody played games to get this story, it's just that if you look at all the things that happen on a given day, many of them -- purely by chance and well within statistical expectation -- will seem "kind of weird".

There are 1.7 friday 13th's per year, so that's 47 people struck by lightning per year on Friday the 13th.
If we rule out the very young and the very old for not being that likely to be struck, it would seem that approximation EVERY YEAR a 13 year old will be struck by lightning on Friday the 13th.
Since people are more likely to be out during the day, you can expect this to happen at 13:13 per lifetime.
But to be fair, we should also allow for all the other fun combinations. 4, 4, 4, 7, 7, 7 etc.

Who knows if it was actually 13:13 or if the boy was 13 though, it's only one guy saying so (the news paper doesn't even know who the boy was).
Checking your watch probably isn't the first thing you do when someone is struck by lightning so they may have looked a few minutes later and figured it *might* have been 13:13. And maybe the kid said "12, but I'm 13 next month", in which case '13' is the number you remember.

How many lightnings strike every minute around the entire world?
The answer is 6,000. since most of them hit the ground (very few hit open ocean), let's say it's closer to 5,000. 25% of those are cloud to ground lightning...so 1,000 lightnings hit the ground on fri/13 @ 13:13...one of them hit some kid...big deal.

I'd argue you are wrong.
Let's say your luck is a number 1 through 100, average luck being 50.
If you are never struck by lightning that's pretty average, giving you a score of 50 at the end of your life.
So if you ARE struck by lightning, and die, that would suck, and give you something like a 1 on the luck scale, because of the odds of being struck, maybe 2 if you peed and electrocuted someone else with the arc.
Now, we have a baseline for being struck at 1-2, but surely LIVING through a lightning strike would have to be some pretty awesome luck! What are the odds of that?! I'd definitely give that well above a 2, higher than 50 even, f**k you'd be pretty lucky to have all that electricity flow through you, I'm going to say you have luck > 90.
Now, for fun, let's say there are other people who survive and live to tell, well you guys are all awesome with your luck score over 90, but what really sets any of these people apart? I'd say being struck on Friday the 13th at 13:13 give you a bonus 10, making you the luckiest person alive.

Im not one for superstition, but my ex's father had do go to the hospital for a severe mersa (sp?) infection and one of my friends had to go to the ER for pneumonia in one of his lungs. It was a hell of a 13th and yes I'm being serious.

I've heard in some countries instead of a 13th floor they seriously have a 12a and 12b. I think that's just plain crazy... if anyone wants to confirm/bust this myth with a link feel free.

Quite a few buildings skip the 13th floor. But if you're on the 14th (or 13b for that matter) you still know the truth.

Many buildings in Korea often don't have a 4th floor. it's either 3, F, 5 or just 3 to 5.

This is also same for Japan. They'll often skip 4 and 9. Hospitals especially pay close attention to these numbers in order to prevent patients from panicking.
