leftlanenews.com— Traffic deaths in the United States have fallen for the second consecutive year, marking a low not seen in 60 years.

Speed doesn't kill people. Ignorant drivers do. A lack of driving skill and distractions play huge factors in accidents. There are people who know how to drive at increased speeds responsibly.
So we can raise the interstate speed limits to 75 now, right? Everyone goes that speed anyway... Now that we have actual data to prove it's not dangerous, why now allow it?
Why stop at 75MPH? Lets go whole Hog and go the Autobahn route with no speed limit! Though I think the PA turnpike would really winnow out a lot of the idiots on the road that way!
70? That's just the suggested speed, right? Everyone I drive with in California goes 80-85. Speed doesn't kill, it's the one slow person that ends up causing a wreck.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
No, it's the idiots who think they know how to drive when they really don't. Or the people who just can't bring themselves to actually concentrate on driving.
People going the speed limit do not cause accidents. It's the people going 80 and not paying attention.
People going the speed limit changing lanes without looking because "it was empty 15 seconds ago", people merging onto a freeway 20mph under the speed limit and assuming they have the right of way are the majority of accident causers. From your post I assume your a speed limit driver if so pay attention, stay in the right lane and no one will wreck into you.
Highways are designed with a number of factors in mind including sight lines, reaction time, inclement weather, average breaking time, etc. All of these factors (as well as any safety equipment currently in place) assume a speed of 65 mph (or 75 in some midwest/western states). It would be great to up the speed limit a bit, I usually go around 80, but I drive an Infiniti... I don't think it's going to happen without a full scale rehabilitation of the highway system.
These claims of no speed limits and less fatalities or accidents I don't doubt. It is common sense that cause 90% of accidents in my opinion. But for America. Those Seatbelt, Speeding and Drunk Driving ads. They may very well be working. They are a constant education. My best advice is, even adults should never stop learning. May have worked?
I like how no one has mentioned the fact that we have record unemployment has nothing to do with it. Less employment = less people on the road. Not to mention people that have had to move for work because of the economy may be people that were doing longer (more dangerous) commutes that may now be close to their new jobs.
This happens every time there is an economic downturn. The correlation is quite consistent. This effect was not accounted for by those who saw magic when the 55 limit was instituted ad the beginning of the '70s recession due to the oil price shock. The reduction in fatalities was in fact more likely to be this effect than any alleged (provably not true) effects of a ridiculous speed limit.
Fewer people overscheduled in the current economy!
It's that moment of inattention that gets you killed.
Safer cars.
Better roads,
Better medical care.
Lower percentage of accidents are fatal.

And this despite the increases in speed limits and more motorists on the road!

We were on a road in Italy where there were no speed limits. Very few accidents there.

We finally have decently safe cars, thats why
mrscotchboySep 9, 2010
Or people have finally become better drivers...but I haven't seen this to be true in LA yet.

More awareness to traffic rules means less accidents. I hope it drops more!
crazedleperSep 9, 2010
That's not it. People slow down when they are texting.
digitalmotoSep 9, 2010
Good to hear, but those numbers are still pretty high...
designersdigestSep 9, 2010
yaa,, where there is strict rules there are more problems.

I'm sure that since the local 7Eleven's stopped giving away driver's licenses, has something to do with it too!

Wow, you guys have no sense of humor today.

This is a sure sign the economy is improving! People can now afford to get on the highway again and kill themselves!

Much to the dismay of everyone that wants the speed limit set to 55 again.

Is this attributed to texting while driving?

This is all thanks to Oprah and her "no phone zone" pledge right?

Alcohol and mobile phones are the demons while driving... It is commonly cause of accident.
