monogamy isn't unnatural either. a male who supported his offspring is more likely to have successful gene transmission as well. evolutionarily as in practice sexual strategy is well... complicated. humans have adopted flexible strategies because that's what works best for our species.

I'd like to suggest anyone who's truly interested in this subject read The Selfish Gene by Richard Dawkins. He does as good a job as anyone going into the details of the topic.
Basically it is of the interest of the female to mate with a male who will be loyal and help raise their offspring (this is why humans date for so long before getting married and why we've created tests for faithfulness such as engagements). So from an evolutionary perspective, men who carry "faithful genes" (now look who's using an oversimplification) will be rewarded by being allowed to mate (and have children who are likely to share the "faithful gene").
Now obviously this rule doesn't apply to everyone (there's always going to be people with different genetic interests - loose women, I'm looking at you), and genetically speaking men will continue to adapt new ways of exploiting the unequal admission price of childrearing (and women will evolve to counter those genetic rebels).

When you're married a lot of the sex stops.
One or both partners gets out of shape.
Often couples have too much respect or are too embarrassed to do really wild things to each other and then face the children afterwords.
Some couples really start to hate each other, mostly because of problems with the kids, and want to get revenge on each other.
One partner wants to feel young again or recapture the feeling of being single.
Single people sometimes target married people.

Not all people that sleep with a married man or woman even KNOW that that person is married. And to put what they do on the same level as the cheater is ridiculous. They never made ANY promises to anyone, and if the cheater would do it with them, they would do it with someone else.

That's an interesting way to look at it... but I don't think it's fair to say that when a man cheats on his wife, the woman he cheats with is equally as guilty as he is. In fact, the woman might not even know that he's married. In most cases, he probably wouldn't tell her.

But a single person engaged in activity with a married person is not cheating on anyone. They may not even know that the married person is really married!
Of your list, I think much of it is bogus (like sex stopping & facing the kids thing). But in the end, your list simply devolves into the giant category of "Lack of fulfillment." Some are emotionally, many are sexually.
The only one that doesn't is the single people targeting married people. But to me that isn't a reason to cheat. That is just having someone to cheat with, in the end, a married person has to make a choice to cheat, which will come down to something else.

In my life, I have seen more women cheat than men. I think its easier for them to get away with it and they are more likely to use sex as a weapon. I think the combination of people not being locked down in traditional sexual roles and the fact that its way easier for a woman to get laid (for the most part) is really evident these days.

They forgot reason #6. The overly jealous girlfriend who constantly accuses you of cheating every time you so much as glance at another woman, or stay out late. At that point some men will cheat just out of spite, so they're not being accused of s**t they're not doing.

As a repentant man who's cheated and faced the consequences (a ruined relationship but some damn good sex), I can honestly say that number 2 and number 4 are real, and will f**k with your head.
Most people wont admit to it, or may not even delve deep enough introspectively to recognize it, but if you like your girl and you still cheat, you're probably insecure about something.

Honestly I believe that if you truly love someone you would never cheat on them regardless of how much attention you were getting. The fact that a lot of both men and women cheat while in relationships or during marriages says a lot about us as a society.

1. This list is almost complete bulls**t. Certainly 1, 4 and 5. #1 especially because I know a lot of men that would NEVER cheat on their wives or GFs if offered in a situation that they would never be caught in.
2. Men are not the only cheaters. The numbers show that men cheat a little more than women, but not statistically all that much more.
To me the biggest reason that partners in a relationship cheat comes down to simply 1 thing - lack of fulfillment. Be it sexual, emotional or intellectual stimulation, sometimes your relationship lacks something. Maybe the rest of that list comes to pass, but they generally boil down to getting something that is lacking in your current relationship. Some would also throw in the insecurity issues too, which would include giving into these desires and actually looking for that fulfillment.
