Beautiful.
A Pale Blue dot.
"Consider again that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every "superstar", every "supreme leader", every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there - on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam."
"Our posturings, our imagined self-importance, the delusion that we have some privileged position in the Universe:, are challenged by this point of pale light. Our planet is a lonely speck in the great enveloping cosmic dark. In our obscurity, in all this vastness, there is no hint that help will come from elsewhere to save us from ourselves.
The Earth is the only world known so far to harbor life. There is nowhere else, at least in the near future, to which our species could migrate. Visit, yes. Settle, not yet. Like it or not, for the moment the Earth is where we make our stand." - Carl Sagan

Sounds like someone could have been a little high ;)
laborerFeb 8, 2011
"When I'm high I can penetrate into the past, recall childhood memories, friends, relatives, playthings, streets, smells, sounds, and tastes from a vanished era. I can reconstruct the actual occurrences in childhood events only half understood at the time. Many but not all my cannabis trips have somewhere in them a symbolism significant to me which I won't attempt to describe here, a kind of mandala embossed on the high. Free-associating to this mandala, both visually and as plays on words, has produced a very rich array of insights.
There is a myth about such highs: the user has an illusion of great insight, but it does not survive scrutiny in the morning. I am convinced that this is an error, and that the devastating insights achieved when high are real insights; the main problem is putting these insights in a form acceptable to the quite different self that we are when we're down the next day." - Mr X (Guess Who)

I'm just trying to say Carl Sagan was possibly on marijuana when he said that (he admitted to marijuana use)
laborerFeb 8, 2011
He wrote that. It was an essay under the assumed name "Mr. X". There are lot of excerpts from it on the Carl Sagan Quote page on Wikipedia.

Man living on tree tops in African jungles and Man living on a house made of concrete...

It's all essentially the same thing.

Terrifying?
alyxvanceFeb 8, 2011
At first I thought this was going to be some sweet video about earth, so I'm thinking 'Alright, this is going to be a great HD video! wow there are some sweet shots! oh s**t its another one of those anti-human videos'
How can we marvel at ant colony super organisms who build massive cities and destroy so much life, and then hate on humans for being f**king awesome.
I am a human and proud of it. Yes, wars and oil spills happen and they suck, but volcanoes, hurricanes, and massive forest fires all happen naturally too. I say we embrace this earth that we have been so fortunate to have and use to the best of our ability. Not abuse it by any means, but use to do and build amazing things.
I don't want some alien civilization showing up some time and thinking 'wow these humans had so much potential but they wasted it'
Just my 2 cents.
norman619Feb 7, 2011
OK, I think I'm missing something. What's so terrifying?
cyberdorkFeb 7, 2011
It looks amazing in 1080p on a big TV. Although I find it VERY preachy.
norman619Feb 7, 2011
It also exaggerates and misrepresents facts. The video is beautiful though. I plan on seeing it on the big screen here in NYC. It's always amazing to see just how beautiful our planet is. It's easy to forget when one lives in an concrete jungle.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
isa9191Feb 7, 2011
Ya it does look nice. But which facts did you mean?
isuzu14bFeb 7, 2011
Its not terrifying as long as i keep my head in the sand.
norman619Feb 7, 2011
Please explain what's so terrifying?
storem00Feb 7, 2011
If you can't see what is terrifying, you aren't paying attention.
norman619Feb 7, 2011
So in other words you are telling me you really don't know? Understood!
storem00Feb 7, 2011
Did you watch the video at all? The terryfying aspect is the destruction of the earth... I feel like this is too obvious for anyone to miss... or are you just trolling?
norman619Feb 7, 2011
Yes I did. I obviously didn't see what you saw so I would like to UNDERSTAND what you find terrifying. Is that asking too much? Or are you only going to give me another snarky answer instead of an honest one?Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
storem00Feb 7, 2011
What I find terrifying is the fact that even though we know we are destroying the earth... we will continue our same practices until we come VERY close to complete devastation.
Even if some facts are skewed, it can't be argued that we are changing the planet for the worst.
I am terrified of being looked at by future generations as the generation that irreversibly severely damaged the earth. I am terrified that even though people see these documentaries, the mass majority will never change their way. But mostly, I am terrified that we won't REALLY pay attention until there is a major global catastrophe caused by our actions; whether it will or will not be too late... we'll have to see.
I hate to be pessimistic, and I still have plenty of hope in humanity (myself included), but it is going to take more than electric cars and recycling programs to fix this problem.
ophelloFeb 8, 2011
Are you really this dense? Either you're pretending to be an idiot or you truly are one.
NewsMeBackFeb 7, 2011
Amazing and breathtaking. Music gives more power to this video.
illinestFeb 7, 2011
Better if you mute it.
ilovemyducksFeb 7, 2011
a stirring video.
limeparrotFeb 8, 2011
I have watched the whole thing and it's really amazing. Highly recommended. HOME is right up there with Koyaanisqatsi and Baraka which are also documentaries based around amazing shots.
treewalkerFeb 8, 2011
Yes.. there will be hell to pay.
But for now Weeeeeeeeeeee! Lets party!
lowcostholidayFeb 8, 2011
If this doesn't inspire people to explore more then nothing will - they've even managed to make a car-park look amazing!
